I am writing this last night!!!
[Insert morning run commentary here]
We set the alarm for 6a but didn’t actually get out the door until 7 thanks to several snoozes and general lethargy. But once we were going, it was good. Just over 5 miles of honeysuckle and bacon smells! It wasn’t my fastest run but it was slow and steady.
Do any of you have trouble with your Garmin loading satellites? It took mine 10 WHOLE MINUTES to turn on and we were too impatient so we just left and it missed the first half mile or so. Guess I just need to turn it on well before I’m ready to go. Guf.
[/end Saturday commentary]
Today I am headed to Hillsborough to spend the day with my mom, attend a town cookout, and then in the morning we are going to see OPRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, technically, we’re going to Duke University’s graduation, where Gail’s son is graduating and Oprah is speaking. Mom and I are huge Oprah fans, and I thought it would be a fun way to spend Mother’s Day.
Matt is heading back to Charleston for a bachelor party!!
I order to get to Hillsborough in time for shopping and lunch, I wanted to leave by 8. I also wanted to squeeze in a workout, so I had everything prepared the night before, including breakfast and this post!
I made us each a smoothie to take on the road –
For two servings this contained:
- 1/2 block silken tofu
- 1/3 cup raw oats
- 1.5 bananas
- 1/2 cup chopped mango
- 1.5 cups milk
- 2 tbsp flax
- 1/2 tbsp honey
- 5 ice cubes
Put in fridge to store overnight. Stir in morning.
It’s awesome!!
I’ve got this for a second breakfast if I need it –
Can’t wait to see Lillian too!
Amy says
I don’t have a lot of troubles… but I usually put it on the front step to load while I’m getting dressed etc so that its 100% ready to go when I am! 🙂

That smoothie looks great! And what a good idea for a morning on-the-run. I’ve gotta try the whole “tofu smoothie” idea!
Laura (On the Threshold of Greatness) says
Have fun! I think Oprah spoke at Gayle’s daughter’s graduation at Stanford too. Lucky kids! 😉 Imagine having Oprah as your mom’s BFF.
K says
Have fun seeing Oprah!! That lady is going to take over the world – but we’ll all get free cars right?! 😉 I love her!

My garmin finds the satellites pretty quickly–less than 1 min.
Have fun with Oprah and Go Duke! Starting next Fall my husband will be a professor there!

Great idea for an overnight smoothie with oats – sounds like a drinkable form of overnight oats!
I need to find those Luna Bar Cookies!!

Lisa says
I love Gayle as much as Oprah; they are a hoot together–cinnamon brown with a dollop of caramel. I listen to Gayle’s radio show when I’m in the car (XM!) I tend to agree with her on so many topics, although I didn’t get as freaked out by the Dr. Laura Berman discussions as she did.
Sheri says
I just put my Garmin on the front step or right by the front door and let it set up before my run usually about 10 minutes or so I leave. Then I never have a prolem! 🙂
Run Sarah says
Have fun! So exciting to see Oprah.
Ali says
I’m going to try my first tofu-infused smoothie tomorrow and I’m a bit scared. It doesn’t look to yummy, to be honest. But, I’m going to trust all the bloggies who swear by it and give it a good try!
Christina says
So cool you’re seeing Oprah!!! Can’t wait to hear more about it tomorrow.
Kailey (SnackFace) says
AHH!! I would explode if I got to see Oprah! I cannot wait to hear all about it!
When you have your smoothies with oats in them, do you chew it a bit? I’ve been curious. That might make me like smoothies if it has some chew!
claire says
Hi Kath’s mom,
My husband will join the Classics dept. This fall he’ll teach a course on Latin political thought and an Latin reading seminar.
Care to audit? 🙂
Angie says
How exciting! Have a great weekend!
Love how organized your fridge looks!
Marilyn says
Try this with the Garmin: turn it on, wait a few seconds, and even though the screen shows it’s locating satellites, hit the mode button. You’ll be ready to go. (At least this works for me.)
carrie says
Sometimes, if you have a lot of trees or high buildings around, it will take longer to load. Try to be in an open area.
Marilyn – thanks for the mode button idea – I’ll have to try that.
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
Have a fabulous day!! 🙂
Jessica says
Claire,
I work at Duke (live in Durham) are you planning on moving to the area? We should connect sometime this fall. :o)
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
Tell OOOOOPRAH WIIIIIINFREY (said in my best Oprah impression) that I said hello!
I can’t wait to hear all about it!
Meaghan says
Sounds like such a fun weekend! Your fridge looks eerily similar to mine. Buttloads of condiments (salsas, butters, mustards, etc.) and lots of drinks, but not a ton else. I need a trip to the store in a code red kind of way! Also, I’ve never seen oats in a smoothie before, but it sounds delicious! I will have to try it
Jess says
I love Oprah too! Wow, they got a huge celeb to give the graduation speech. Impressive.
thepinkpeppercorn says
Nice smoothie! Have a fun time at Oprah, and with all of your plans!
Lauren says
So does the smothie stay cold enough overnight in the fridge? I would be concerned that is would get to liquidy and then all the good stuff in it would settle at the bottom. If it doesn’t, I’m SO going to do this myself! I never have time for these things in the morning, but this would be a great solution!
Linda says
I was also wondering about the smoothie liquidfying and the the good stuff separating to the bottom. Did you have to do anything to the smoothies in the morning aside from stirring it up to get its usual thickness and consistency?
Nhuy says
Have fun at the graduation ceremony, the guest speaker sounds wonderful:) (go Oprah)
Leah @ Simply Fabulous Now says
Oprah?! Have fun!!!
I just put oats in my green monster a couple of days ago!
http://simplyfabulousnow.wordpress.com/2009/05/08/the-oat-monster/
It’s so good isn’t it?!
Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) says
Interesting smoothie!
Hope you’re having a great day!
Mia says
OPRAH!?!? Wow im so jealous!! Shes amazing. I will actually be a freshman at Duke next year; maybe she can come back and speak at my graduation!! ha
have fun!
Mom says
Mia,
Congratulations on your acceptance to Duke. Best years of my life! (But don’t tell Kath, since I didn’t have her yet. She’s in the second set of best years in my life.)
Mom says
Clarie, Thanks for the audit offer. I’d better stick to children’s book writing. But what a wonderful accomplishment. I hope you will like the area. Where are you moving from?
Barbara
Kathi says
Anyone can watch the graduation live online, just go to Duke’s site. I watched my nephew graduate this morning on his college’s website, it was cool!
Kath says
Tina,
Funny you say that because Ellen is speaking at Tulane’s grad where I’ll be next weekend!!
Kailey (SnackFace),
The oats blend pretty well in the blender, but it is chewier than a really liquidy smoothie.
Marilyn ,
Thanks for the mode tip!
Lauren + Linda,
The smoothie was a perfect thick consistency. The ingredients did separate some overnight (actually it looked like the milk was on the bottom) but I just gave it a good shake in my to-go cup (or you could stir well) and everything was delicious again. It’s awesome to make them overnight! I don’t usually use frozen fruits though, but I did add 5 ice cubes and reasoned that if they melted any the oats would sop up the liquid.
Kath
Michelle Hisae says
OPRAHHHH?!!!! Way cool! I love her show. I know, I’m only 20 years old but I do love her show. Have fun!
Jenn (eating bender) says
Yay Oprah!! Thank you so much for the birthday wishes, Kath 🙂 I hope that you’ve been having a great day!
Elizabeth says
Ahhh!!!! Oprah!!!!!!!!!!! Color me jealous!
Marilyn says
You’re more than welcome (for the mode tip).
P.S. I think you should go back to get that dress!
Rosalie says
I had no idea Kath’s parents went to Duke! I’m a current junior 🙂 and during the school year when kath talks about the weather I’m thinking, “yes! I know exactly what you’re talking about!” — the bog’s vicinity is one of its biggest draws for me! And of course, the duke spoon rocks.
Ashley says
It sometimes takes a long time, well at least 5 minutes for things to load up on our Garmin sometimes too. 🙁
claire says
hi barbara,
We’re moving from Cambridge, England where my husband just finished his phd. But, our move is actually a bit of a homecoming as i lived in Chapel Hill for the first 7 yrs of my life when my dad taught at UNC. We’re so EXCITED to be back in North Carolina.
Claire
melissa says
Hey Kath,
I only had my garmin for 3 runs before I decided to return it. Many people have trouble getting and keeping the satiellite in the city, due to the buildings, but also in central park. I didn’t have too much trouble, it took up to 3 minutes. But when I saw the ads for the sleeker garmin FR 60, I decided to return the clunky 350 and wait until the lighter version came out. plus it has a foot pod, which isn’t gps dependent and is supposed to be more accurate.
