After running errands all afternoon uptown, I met a blog reader for dinner: Jeannie! She’s a triathlete from Pennsylvania + New York. A shout out to her friend who recommended she read KERF too!! (Hi!) I almost forgot our photo but remember at the last second – whew. Thanks to auto-timer, we snapped one along East Boulevard 🙂
I also had a quasi-celebrity sighting tonight! A girl came up to me while I was waiting in the restaurant and said “Are you Kath?” I thought it was Jeannie at first since I didn’t know what she looked like, but turns out she is a reader who went to Davidson and graduated two years before me, and another Davidson alum sent her the blog. But it was still really cool to be recognized in public by someone I didn’t know! (Hi Jessica!)
I was in a red-wine-kinda mood, so I ordered a glass with dinner –
I don’t like restaurants that don’t bring complimentary food to the table (i.e. bread or crackers). Hmph! 🙁
But I had a delicious Seared Ahi Tuna Salad with Avocado and Mango for dinner. At first I thought it was too small to fill me up, but it was actually the perfect size. I was still craving some grains though.
A bunch of sauces on the side. I fork-dipped the dressing in the back left with my salad and tasted the others (one was soy sauce and the other was a mystery!)
Dinner left me REALLY thirsty. Gonna go chug water and get cozy on the couch 🙂

That looks like the perfect size for dinner… not too much. And for me, no bread would probably be better because I will just eat and eat and not stop!!

Kath,
The only way to gain weight is to eat 3500 EXTRA calories, right? I went a littttle crazy with the snacks tonight and want to moderate it healthily tomorrow (i.e. exercise, maybe listen to my body & eat a little less) but if you have any tips for how to move past it & not dwell on it (& you may have definitely addressed this sort of topic before)? Readers, any thoughts as well?
Trish says
Hey Kath! I have a question about “good fats.”
I understand that fish has polyunsaturated fats, which is good for you, but what about the skin of a fish. I don’t really care about the thin skins, like on salmon. I’m actually worried about the thick skin, like on a catfish, where its visible, thick and jelly-like. Should i take it off or is that where all the nutrients lie?
Thanks in advanced!

mmm i miss seared tuna salads!

That is so funny your were recognized in public! You are an internet star!
Kim says
You have a public! 😀
The salad looks lovely; nothing goes better with Ahi tuna than avocado. But not putting bread or flatbreads on the table is a little creepy – I always suspect they just don’t want you to fill up on bread and then not order as much from the menu.

I am sure you have been tagged a thousand times but you are now tagged 1001. ; )

One thing I like about Indian and Mexican restaurants is you can always count on a basket of pappadum or tortilla chips. Bread is hit or miss, unless you are at an Italian restaurant, where they nearly always serve it. I’m glad I’m not the only one who misses it when it’s not there.
Little Black Dress says
Kath, that is awesome! Also, that salad does look lovely but I get really grumpy too when I don’t get free bread.
Also, A- the very best thing you can do is just to eat healthfully and normally today- do not restrict your meals and make sure you get all of your food groups in. This will keep your body working. If you skimp on meals today, your body might try to hold on to the extra snackage or you might get too hungry and eat the wrong thing. Everyone eats a little bit more than normal on some days- it’s just how our bodies work. The best way to not let affect your weight is to accept your humanity, enjoy when you do splurge, and continue to eat healthy afterwards. Good luck!

Sorry I keep commenting so many times, you just blog about really interesting things that make me want to get up on the ‘ol soapbox and talk about!
How fun to meet one of your readers! I don’t have readers that look at me like that {yet…?} but there are several bloggers I would love to meet because I admire their blogs and it would be a lot of fun.
The salad looks tasty!
Allison says
I am always a little bitter when restaurants don’t bring out something. But that is especially true because I have kids and it keeps them happy to have something.
To A. – I agree with Little Black Dress. Don’t try and restrict today because that will just lead to more eating later. Just listen to your body and eat when you are hungry.
Kath says
caitlin,
Apparently I missed 2,000,000 – my Stats say I’m up to 2,934,665 pageviews! But that’s in 11 months, so it’s been a lot of time.
A.,
You are correct – 3,500 ABOVE maintenance. A week on vacation might do a nice dent, but one day shouldn’t contribute much. Just get back at it tomorrow (today) with healthy meals. Skip alcohol and dessert and focus on fresh foods. And a sweaty workout will work wonders! You’ll feel normal again ASAP.
Trish ,
I actually don’t know much about fish skin – but I eat it on salmon for sure because I like it. I don’t think it contributes much in the range of nutrients so I’d say eat it if you want, otherwise just skip it. I don’t know what that jelly stuff might be, but unless it tastes great, I’d skip it.
Sammie ,
Thanks for the honor, but I’m not one for chains 🙁
Hot Garlic,
🙂 I’d be excited to meet you!
