Funny to admit how much I was avoiding certain pairs of pants that were a bit snug. They fit again. Woo! Now I don’t need to go shopping because I have new clothes to wear 🙂 I’m sporting a pair of pants I haven’t worn in a year today. Since I don’t weigh myself, perhaps I do need to try on a pair of these dress pants once a week. My jeans stretch too much! What have a done to lose weight? Nothing!!! Just mindful eating and cutting back on desserts, handfuls of snacks from my pantry and alcohol.
I’ve got to be at work early today so I’m working out this afternoon. Good thing too because we have a house showing at 4:30 so I’ll be kicked out anyway!
Oats today were rockin’!! Coconutty!!!
The Mix
- 1/4 cup oats
- 2 tbsp Bob’s Red Mill Apple Cinnamon Hot Cereal
- 1/2 tbsp chia
- Whole medium banana
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3/4 cup water
- Cinnamon, vanilla, pinch salt
- Coconut
- 1/2 tbsp flax
- Coconut butter
- Naturally Nutty Vanilla PB
The coconut butter melted away into frosting. Love that stuff!!
Say hello to my little friennnnds
Also love my grandmother’s antique spoons! I believe they need to be polished though 😳
Cafe – still finishing off the Christmas Blend. Hurry up, spring is here!!!
Da-da. Da-da. Is there a shark around!?
Morning News
Check out the World’s Biggest Bowl Of Oatmeal – 327.5 kg! Those Canadians have to keep warm somehow!
I’m all outta the chia + flax bundles, but Tina still has some left!
Also, last 24 hours to get the 15% off Kodiak cakes 🙂

Mrs. Money says
I am eating my cinnamon raisin oats as I read this. Shark attack! 🙂
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I LOVE that spoon! And isn’t it such a great feeling when something that was too tight fits again? I have a pair of pants that I try on about once a month, just to see where I’m at…although they’re usually a bit too tight, ha!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I love the Bobs Red Mill apple hot cereal – really good! And nothing is sweeter than an old pair of pants that now fit. 😉
Hannah says
That jug is just too cute for words. Too too cute. And nah, don’t bother polishing the spoons. If there’s rust, well, that just means some iron in the oats, right? 😛
Simply Life says
I’m still using my gingerbread coffee that is a treat around christmas, but I try and avoid regular coffee so it’s now taken me 4 months to get through about half 🙂
Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) says
I love your little oat jug =D
And I think trying on a well-fitting pair of pants once a week is a great way to judge if you’re in line! I don’t weigh myself either, and the other day I tried on a pair of pants that were VERY snug… could quite possibly be all the tastes (and bowfuls! lol) I have had during culinary school so far… but it reminds me I need to reel it in!!

Have a good day at work and an even better workout tonight 😀 Mmmm I can never get enough oats
Jenny says
I love your no effort weight loss!
Rhiannon says
How do you make “the mix”? Do you cook the oats and then add everything in or all together….It sounds delicious!
Kath says
Check out the “Tribute To Oatmeal” page for the recipe and method 🙂
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Those oats look to do DIE for. wow.
Becky @ flybynyght says
I have the opposite problem right now – my pants are all toooooo big and I’m avoiding buying new ones. Buying new ones are a big commitment to me – but one I think I’m ready for…And then to leave those ones behind and buy new ones again (sensing a theme here? :P)
Haleigh says
You are an inspiration Kath! I have been trying so hard lately to not weigh myself and go by how I feel and how my pants fit. This is how my grandmother has stayed the same size her entire life ..from high school and now she is well into her 70’s. It truly works! Delicious looking bowl of oats, as per usual 🙂 I really need to try some coconut butter.. I have been intrigued by the stuff for a few months now so I think it’s time to give it a whirl. Hope you have a fantastic day! xoxo
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
way to go on losing that little bit of weight. that’s so encouraging to see other women doing the same thing i need to do 🙂 hope work is fun and have a great workout!
Lara says
Pants (that don’t stretch) are an excellent gauge of “weight”. I have a few pants I don’t wear because they are horribly out of fashion but I keep them for weight “check in’s”. Eating intuitively is just as important (or even more) than eating healthy when it comes to weight. It is all too easy too eat too much real food/healthy food but practicing intuitive eating is key.
Joanne says
It seems that you are running more miles as well which could contribute to the weight loss. Watch that you don’t lose muscle.
I’ve never seen coconut butter before? Gotta check that out and compare the nutrition to PB.
Good oats. I’d like to see that big bowl of Canadian oats. Cool!
Michaela says
Congrats on the new pants! I have to say though you’ve been running a lot more and I bet that has something to do with it. Can’t beat the runner’s calorie burn!
rustique says
I love coconut! I’m trying to hold off for the warm weather because to me it’s got to be enjoyed in summer, but if the craving strikes I might just have to cave.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Nice combination on the oats! I always eat my oats out of a cup with a handle! I need to get some coconut butter. I looks delicious!
shannon (the daily balance) says
i have some of the coconut goodness in my pantry that i haven’t tried yet! what am i waiting for?!
what is your favorite way to enjoy it other than in oats?
Kath says
Toast or once…sweet potatoes!
Marina says
Intuitive eating is great,I wish I could listen to my body a bit more.
That oats look so great, I’m always jealous at your toppings 🙂
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Yay for coconut butter and “new clothes!”
I need to check out that coconut butter sometime…it looks dreamy on top of oats! 😀
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
Love the way the oats look in that creamer cup. 🙂
You also increased your activity since you started running further, right? I noticed in your pics that you looked slimmer and your clothes were baggier.

I’m wearing my dress pants that used to be too tight today! Such a good feeling 🙂
Jessie says
Don’t you love it when too tight pants start to fit again?!
Veggielady4life says
Just thought I would share… my coffee maker quit working this morning… so I took a cue from you and got my French Press coffee maker out of the cabinet… and made some! It was great… so much better… I might just start doing this instead of using the traditional coffee maker! Thanks for the idea!
Kath says
🙂 Love French press!
Liz @ lizrunsdc says
I love your approach to weight loss! It really emphasizes healthy habits over worrying about a number on the scale.
Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) says
Oh, how i love coconut oats. That spoon really is gorgeous!
Congrats on the “new” pants. I think it’s good to have one pair of pants that can serve as a size gage. The scale can be so misleading and discouraging…
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
I haven’t tried coconut butter in oatmeal yet. I looove it as a toast topper, but haven’t topped it off in the oats.
Great job on the weightloss:) It’s great to be able to fit into snug pants again. Plus, yay for saving money 😉
Jen says
Way to go!! Mindful eating is key! And, when I snack, I prefer healthy snacks. I feel better when I eat them, and they fill me up more! But, I find that when I am late or starving, I just grab a handful of whatever I can get my hands on in my pantry – so why even keep that stuff in the house, if i’d prefer healthy snacks to begin with?!?!?! I’d much rather keep a drawer full of fruit in the fridge! When I find that I am hungry for a snack, I always go to the fridge first to see if we have something healthy in there.
Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) says
I need to find me some coconut butter!!
jillian says
I hear ya on the clothes fitting thing…I don’t weigh myself either. It’s too much of a metal game for me if I do. Congrats to new pants!!! Ha!
jaclyn@todays lady says
That’s so great that those pants fit again!! I need to do the same thing. Moving in with a boy has lead to a tiny weight gain….. I need to cut out those extra random handfuls and I’ve also realized that my portion sizes at meals have gotten a lil bigger than they used to be….. need to cut back on that too! I don’t believe in weighing myself either, it’s all in how you feel.
Kori Higgins says
Congrats on fitting back into some of your pants! That’s awesome!! Your oats look delicious, and the post on the largest bowl of oatmeal is too funny. I already ordered the Kodiak Cakes, and I can’t wait to try them + the syrup! Have a great day!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Wow those oats look AWESOME!!!!
And that’s the best way to drop a few pounds to get back to your happy weight… no need for drastic diets!

Freya@ Brit Chick Runs says
That’s such a beautiful bowl/oat container! I want me one 😀
You’ve probably lost weight with all the extra running!! Don’t lost anymore, you look fabulous as you are 🙂

Ah good for you! Mindful eating is DEFINITELY the way to go. When I start to see my love handles creeping over my jeans I try to cut back on the booze 🙂

Sophie @ yumventures says

Sabrina says
Are coconut butter and coconut oil 2 different things??
Kath says
Yes. Different amounts of oil, I believe.
Katharine says
That spoon is adorable! And has sentimental value, too. Cute. 🙂
jen says
i wear a lot of tight exercise tanks, so when i girls start getting a little to showy or the tummy looks like i’ve got a secret in there, i know its time to get back on track! 🙂
i’ve struggled with eating and weight and body image issues. my mom likes to tell me we all go through fat and skinny times, and happy and sad times, and its ok to eat unhealthy from time to time. we just have to remember that everythings goes in cycles.
Salah@myhealthiestlifestyle says
I can never get over how amazing your oats always look, but especially these coconut ones!!! I’m salivating right now!

700 + lbs of oats is a lot of oats
Janna (Just Flourishing) says
Haha, the biggest bowl of oatmeal was made where I’m from!
And you’re right, we definitely need to keep warm there! Winnipeg is a darn cold city. But we love our oats!
Steph- Exercise Physiologist & Artist! says
Mindful eating is what helped me to lose 60LBS!! Congrats to you and your new pants 🙂
I actually lost the last 10lbs by really forcing myself to stop eating when I am full. At first I had to literally stop myself mid bite! Now I stop (most of the time!!) without even thinking about it.
Thank goodness I have finally reached this place!! Weeee Hooooo
Have a great day Kath and all Kath readers!!

Yay for fitting back into clothes. It’s such a great feeling!cc
Kathleen says
That’s awesome you’re back in those pants! I didn’t realize you were even trying to lose weight so it’s awesome to see such little but long term changes have awesome benefits. You look great at any weight but I know you must be stoked to have new clothes!!!
Kath says
Well I wasn’t really trying to lose – just being mindful and using the Squiggly Line Approach.
Mallory says
i am dying to get some coconut butter but it is so expensive… what all do you use it for!?!? i wish food was cheaper!!!!!!!!!!
Danica says
Congrats on fitting into your pants again. I bet your training for the half has really helped you tone up and lean out 🙂 too
Alison (Life's Little Lusts) says
oooooh yes,
we canadians take it to the max!!! 😉
mindful eating is definitely the best lifestyle practice
in terms of weight loss,
though it takes practice for sure!
there are some days where it feels impossible.
it’s so great to be able to commit the mornings to
a slow space of me-time where i can
enjoy preparing and eating my breakfast
exactly the way i like it,
without any irritating distractions.
just me and my daily sudoku,
homemade latte and bliss-in-a-bowl!
thanks for reminding us of the importance
of mindfulness.
😀
Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place says
I like your weight loss motto, just eat mindfully and exercise…that’s what I do! and I love how you don’t weigh yourself!! 🙂
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
yeah i’m always amazed at how much “mindful eating” can really take the pounds off. when i was fully in my eating disorder i didn’t believe it was possible.
Johanna B says
It’s fun to go shopping in your closet. I’ve lost 50 lbs in the past year and I love finding clothes that now fit well and even some that are now too big.
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
I would LOVE to have a bowl of oatmeal that big:) haha
Kath says
RE. Running + weight loss: I have been taking a lot more [hard earned] rest days as well as eating snacks when I’m hungrier the days after long runs, so I wouldn’t attribute it all to more running. Perhaps a little running, but mostly changes in habits.
kalli@fitandfortysomething says
oh i love when old clothes fit well again….it is like getting a new wardrobe 🙂
Ashley says
LOVE that long gorgeous spoon. Isn’t adding a whole banana so much better than half??? Unless it’s a realllly big banana I just add the whole thing..So delicious. I find mindful eating is hardest when I’m in the kitchen making a ton of food like the past two weeks. I have cut back on my lunches a tad because I know all my samplings add up!!
Elizabeth says
I’m sure your greatly increased running (but not increased eating) has contributed to your weight loss. I’ve been wondering if you would increase your food intake to match your increased runs, since they burn so many calories.
Kath says
See my comment above re. running. I’m not going to go out for ice cream on long run days just to eat more calories. I’m sure it balances out in the few days after considering I take rest/yoga days after and often the day before too.
Ellen says
Hi Kath,
Just found your website and I love it…I try to eat very clean and I love how you eat and your passion for exercise! I am 44 and have 3 kids. Seems you and I are around the same weight and height…how tall are you? I am always trying to lose the same 5 lbs. I would love to get to around 115. That is when I feel my best and most fit. I too LOVE oatmeal….but not to your level of changing it up. I think I will start now! Thanks for the awesome site!!
Kath says
Welcome Ellen! I’m 5’2″
RhodeyGirl says
Hi Kath!
I love when you reflect on your eating habits etc. Congrats on those pants fitting well again! I have had the same lovely discovery too! Finally all my pants are loose again and not snug!
Always want to say.. I just love your blog, Always have, and always will!
Kath says
Thanks Sabrina!
Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow says
Mindful eating is such a perfect place to be in life in my eyes. 🙂 I have been in a tough place for months now (am getting married in 4 months so I keep focusing too much on how I should feel or look in my dress) which is ultimately distracting me from eating well everyday (mindfully well that is) which is leading to over indulging simply because I want to do better tomorrow. Can anyone relate? I’m sure I’m not the only one. 🙂
But whenever I can center myself on the choices I am making, how my body feels I make nothing but mindful choices. When restriction, deprivation or too much structure enters my life = FREAK OUTS! 🙂
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I love clothes as a guide. It lets me know when I need to watch it and when I’m doing it just right.
Shion (Shi's Eating) says
Kath, your blog is really an inspiration! You have such a well-balanced life and healthy approach to eating. You remind me (three times a day) to really respect my body and listen to my hunger cues.
It’s certainly not easy and I still have a ways to go but it’s nice to have your blog to come back to and remind me of what needs to be done 🙂
The Paris Food Blague says
gosh that looks soo good. like dessert, especially with such pretty spoons!
congrats on your “new clothes”
Janet (Pantry Bites) says
I follow the same concept Kath. I tend to obsess over number too much. I pay attention to little things and it does work.

Yay for mindful eating and getting back into old/new clothes!!! 😀
And the oats look yumilicious – as always!!!
HeatherBakes says
It’s amazing how small changes (like not snacking- my downfall) can add up to big results! I just have to keep reminding myself of this as I head to the fridge 🙂
Cole says
Mmm, coconut-y oats. And mindful eating is one habit that everyone should try to learn!
lisa says
Those oats look so gooey and delicious! I love coconut, and will have to try some on my oats as well.
amanda says
Wow, those oats look delicious like always. I had the same thing with losing a pant size and not knowing. A lot of mine as well was mineful eating and cutting back on alcohol. I also have added some more miles to my weekely activitiy.
Sarah says
Kath,
You were the person who introduced me to the concept of using your pants (instead of the scale) as a guide and moving a little more when they get tight instead of freaking and going on some sort of restricted diet. I really, REALLY have benefited from this. I haven’t weighed myself since last June and I feel like I have been SO much happier and healthier! When my pants get tighter, I add in a few more walks and seem to be fine (and sometimes it seem like my period was to blame, like you wrote about in your article recently.)
Thanks for all the work you do on your blog! It really makes a difference!
Sarah

Kath, it is so exciting to read about your success with mindful eating! I definitely love the feeling of getting back into those snug pants. I hope you have fun shopping. You have a great body shape and have a variety of styles of clothes to choose from. I think V necks, blue shades, tight waistlines and subtle prints look best on you. Hope to see the fruits of your shopping in your blog.

Oh my goodness Kath, those oats are seriously making my mouth water!!!
Meagan says
Those oats look yummy! I love the bowl/spoon combo.
Is there a certain reason why you do not weigh yourself anymore? Is once a week not ok?
Kath says
Sure, it’s fine if you want to. Everyday is fine. But it was driving me crazy. And the numbers really don’t matter. All that does is how you feel.
