His profile!! *heart eyes*
Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for all of your kind words in response to my post. In almost 10 years of blogging, I don’t think I have ever felt so connected to you all. Thank you for making me feel loved. <3
We had a fun, chilled, typical mid-winter weekend ’round here. On Friday night we had Mona Lisa fresh pasta with their bolognese sauce and a sprinkling of kale.
Kiddo version. Surprisingly he was more into the kale than the noodles!
On Friday evening we finished Season 5 of Game of Thrones. What a finale! On to Season 6!!
Our Saturday morning breakfast was coffee, an egg, and a Bread Basket English muffin. I used to buy these muffins before the bakery opened, and love how yeasty they taste.
I took Mazen to the gym where I did a quick workout and then we went in the warm pool for a family swim. Indoor pool swims are our favorite winter activity.
Showering in the family locker room (since Mazen is too old for the women’s locker room) is quite the ordeal. But we survived, and shared a smoothie in the cafe to tide us over to a late lunch. I designed one myself with banana, milk, peanut butter, and kale.
We headed to Wegman’s for groceries next. I am not the biggest fan because it is just SO BIG! If you forget something you have to walk half a mile to find it…
Late lunch from the hot bar. I kind of wish I’d just made a salad or sandwich at home. That’s a tamale in the upper left – that was good!
M and I made a birthday card for Matt and then snuggled with a movie for most of the afternoon. I miss the sun!
At Saturday night’s dinner I had king salmon I bought at Wegman’s that was way too expensive but also way too good!! We ate it with brussels sautéed in bacon with apple and rice.
On Sunday morning I had more toast before heading to the 10 a.m. Afterburn class. That class is KILLER and wore me out!!
Post gym lunch of leftover Friday night dinner.
Plus some of these while I heated up lunch. Had to!
Mazen and I went back to the grocery store because we forgot some things and needed more things from Whole Foods. I think I’m just going to stick to WF from here on, although I do like Wegman’s!
On Sunday evening we were invited to the soft opening of Cho’s, a nacho and beer spot in the old McGrady’s space. Hydraulion Red is my favorite local beer made next door at Three Notch’d.
The menu did not let us down! The nachos were creative and so good. Dessert – wait for it!
Classic nachos:
The Poke-Cho’s had wonton chips, sushi-grade tuna, pickled radish, jalapenos, and two kinds of spicy aioli. Loved these!
And for dessert – S’mores nachos!!!! Baked graham cracker “chips” with toasted marshmallow, chocolate drizzle and vanilla ice cream. SO GOOD!
Nacho everyday restaurant!
xoxo

Just a minot remark…When you say “we” watched the season 5 finale of GoT and “we” went to the soft opening of…do you mean Thomas and you? Because I assume it’s not Mazen and you! Just for clarification, because I am reading this at 8 am while taking my first sip of coffee and it is a bit confusing sounding when you are naming Mazen the whole rest of the entry…although maybe he is a very mature 4 year old 😉
Those nachos really do look A+ and I think all your food this week looks scrumptious!!
KathEats says
Haha yes Thomas. I would not let Mazen watch the content of GOT!
kate says
Ah I could cry at the site of those nachos.
I got a hot bar lunch from WF the other day and I thought the same thing about making lunch a home instead. Oh well, sometimes convenience back fires.
Jessica says
I bought the wild king salmon at Wegmans this week, too. I bought a half-pound, which was $15 and served two people, for a per-serving cost of $7.50. I certainly can’t get wild-caught salmon for that price in a restaurant, so I think it’s a good value! Plus, only Whole Foods outranks Wegmans on sustainability practices.
Unfortunately, the commercial fishermen are only getting $2.10/lb. for their catch right now. Factor in the environmental impact of shipping fish halfway around the world as well, and wild salmon remains a bi-weekly (at most) treat for me.
Jessica says
And I wanted to add that I hope everyone’s aware of the environmental impact of farm-raised salmon. Pollution, wasteful feeding practices, destruction of other species if they escape, and high levels of PCBs – you’re supposed to eat farmed salmon no more than once a month! Please don’t try to save money by eating farmed salmon. Wild Alaskan fish is healthy and sustainable!
KathEats says
Yes you are right. My serving was $20, and I justified it by saying it was cheaper than a restaurant. And you are right that it’s not that the sustainable and healthiest foods are expensive, it’s that “regular” food is just too cheap.
Pat says
If it will make you feel a little better, those of us who live inAlaska pay a similar price for King Salmon. Other varieties ar less, but not inexpensive. Same with local shrimp and crab.
KathEats says
I will say it was delicious!!
Michelle says
Wow I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say they prefer another grocery store to Wegmans! Maybe I’m just biased because I grew up with one and don’t have one where I live now. I miss it so much!
KathEats says
It certainly has a ton of variety! I don’t love the layout of ours (you can’t really shop the perimeter and flow easily) and I don’t think the organic/grass-fed/local foods are very well organized. I find myself doing zig zags! So it’s more of a layout thing and less of an offering thing. I’m sure with time I’d like it more, but I just prefer Whole Foods.
Emma says
Totally agree on the zig zagging! I long for a WF where we live (which I grew up with) opposed to the Wegmans we have. Everyone raves about Weg’s to-go food and salad bar but it’s a lot of unhealthy, junk food to me.
KathEats says
I find it hard to resist a lot of the less healthy hot bar foods, which yes, leave me feeling very weighted down!
Tonya says
I agree. I LOVE Wegmans. however I do find that navigating the aisles and finding what I need DOES result in a lot of zig zagging for me. I don’t mind it, but since you mentioned it, I can say that I do agree.
Also, their hot bar is AWESOME but it is so hard to resist the enchiladas, crab mac n cheese, indian food, asian food, fried food, etc. Yes the variety is great but my Wegman’s salads wind up looking more like a buffet plate! 🙂 haha! Much easier to stick to my guns at Whole Foods.
KathEats says
Yes somehow Wegmans Asian hot bar seems healthier than the egg rolls at take-out restaurants but I imagine they are the same!
Kelly says
Those nachos!! Omg!
And you just gave me the perfect idea of going indoor swimming with my kids on this day off of school:) thank you!
Andrea says
I love the doggy! So cute!!! What’s his/her name? I know what you mean about post-swimming being quite the ordeal … always an adventure getting both yourself and a kiddo showered and dressed.
KathEats says
His name is Gus and he’s a lab/labradoodle mix : )
Kelli H says
Those look like the best nachos ever!! All three of them. Sounds like you had a great weekend.
Laurie says
I am from Rochester, NY…the home of Wegmans. I am not sure I can follow you any more if you don’t like Wegmans! LOL
KathEats says
Haha!! I like it!! I just am not sold as my one and only grocery store 🙂
Kelli says
OMG game of thrones, how I invested my time in the first season, it was so boring I thought I wasn’t going to make it, then all of a sudden it got good and I’m hooked! I hate when you eat out and it’s blah, that’s the worst! At least you re-cooped with some delicious nachos!
Jodea says
This was me and my fiancé! We had serious debates over whether to continue after season one. Everyone told us to stick with it. We just finished the second season and are finally getting hooked!
Kelsey @ So Much Life says
Woohoo!! I love those Saturday morning classes that kick your butt!! You totally earned those nachos!!
Thanks for your post on Friday, Kath. I didn’t comment on it, but just wanted to let you know that I’m impressed with your vulnerability and always thankful that you remain honest with us, your readers. Your blog is one of my favorites to read, and it’s so fun to hear about your new relationship. Looking forward to seeing some of those travel posts soon! Maybe….???
KathEats says
Thanks Kelsey!!
Annie says
Those nachos look amazing!! We have a wegmans near us in Mass but I also find it to be way too big and overwhelming!
polly says
Hi sweetie!
I am a little late getting to respond from your post the other day where you were so honest. I LOVE THAT.
First, I am just so happy for you. All of my people who have parents who are divorced, but they stay friends with their ex, are so happy and just can enjoy sharing life with both of them and their new significant others without feeling weird. you will always be a family, no matter what. So good for you and Matt!!
and your sweet new man!!! yayyyy. I hope you feel loved and cherished every single day. I am so glad you all live so close and Mazen can have so much love nearby pouring into him. I hope exciting things are in store for you two soon.
and honestly, after reading for so many years, i have loved your blog more in the past 6 months that ever. It just feels real (not that it wasnt before, no worries!) but it just feels simple (my favorite) and fun and not always the same but always about your life. I love the food part, but the life part has always been my favorite because after all, people are my favorite always. 🙂
You are loved and I hope 2017 brings many blessing upon you! XOXO
KathEats says
Xoxo back, as always

That’s too funny because my husband and I are binging GOT and we finished season 5 on Friday night too! I don’t think I have ever binge watched a show as fast as we have been this one. It must be because it reminds me of a super drawn out LOTR (my favorite movies of all time)…just with more naked people.
KathEats says
Haha yes! I was just telling Thomas it was just like LOTR (which he hadn’t seen all of)
Katie @ Live Half Full says
A nacho and beer bar? HEAVEN.

It’s sort of weird for me to see anyone talk about Wegmans because I still think of it as a local store. I live in Western New York where they originate from and they’re a store I grew up on. However, I can say that I lust over Whole Foods (I’ve never been – but really, really want to check one out). It took us forever to even get a Trader Joe’s because they all have to compete with Wegman’s and its very loyal fan base (and I do mean fans)! In my personal opinion though, the hot foods bar at Wegmans is so lack luster. It used to be great, but over the years, it has really gone down hill. I think Wegmans can be pretty great for produce, but in many ways, they seem to push their own products so much that variety can be lacking and prices aren’t always very competitive. I can understand why you would want to stick to Whole Foods though…I feel like a traitor even saying that! 😉
KathEats says
Haha!! I really don’t dislike Wegmans but I just love Whole Foods : )
Stephanie says
Aren’t you pleasantly surprised the most controversial statement you’ve posted this week is – even though you like Wegman’s , you’re sticking to Whole Foods?! 🙂 PS I’m digging your subtle pronoun shift.
KathEats says
haha! : )
Tonya says
hahaha!

LOVED your post from the other day about things you were afraid to say…I truly believe in the power of vulnerability and that it is what ultimately connects us with others. Kudos to you for sharing….and so happy that you have found love and companionship again – it does not have to speak to your relationship with Matt at all.
I am so envious that you are near wegmans – I LOVE it! went to school in syracuse and no other store has come close in the 27 years since then! My niece lives in Binghamton so I stock up when I visit her. It is huge…but has anything and everything and at good prices. Drool…..
