I slept in a bit this morning and woke up with the feeling my summer school was over it felt so good to not have to rush . But then I remembered the 1,000 things on my to-do list today, most of which are study-related.
But a little oatmeal cheered me up. I’d call this one Blueberry Crisp 🙂 The granola planks are different than putting on regular granola. They aren’t crunchy but are chewy, so it’s fun for a different texture.
- 1/3 cup oats
- 1/3 cup hemp
- About 1/2 cup blueberries + blackberries stirred in towards the end
- 1/4 crumbled Blueberry Vanilla granola plank
- Sprinkle coconut
- Large spoonful PB
With hot tea –
I’m sure everything I have to do today will take me longer than expected, but I’m off to a good start. I’ve already taken my car to the dealership for an oil change and walked home (about a 30 minute walk). I’m walking back in a bit. I thought I was so cool bringing my article on Lipids and Exercise to read on the walk home to get a head start on a paper until I realized it wasn’t an original research article and I’d need another for my paper. Grr! But luckily I took Shape Magazine with me (for article floppy page support) so I just read that instead. I’ve got a new article for the walk back.
I’m not sure if I’ll go to the gym too or if the walking will wear me out. I’ve got to head uptown around 2pm to meet a classmate and then we might get smoothies , but otherwise it’s study, study, study all day today (and TOMORROW!) 😥 1 month to go.

Breakfast looks SO yummy this morning!!! I’m going to copy this idea…:)

I really don’t know how you walk and read, you must be very coordinated haha! I on the other hand am super clumsey and would fall on my face!
Heather says
You’re so lucky to be able to walk to all of these places! That’s so much better than just heading to the gym everyday, IMO.
Good luck with the studying 🙂

I would love to ride my bike or walk everywhere…but in my town people dont think walkers or bikers should get to share the road. I would be worried about getting run over. Plus there arent tons of bike and walking sidewalks.

Hi Kath,
I have a question for you: I know you said it took you about a year an a half to get to your current weight, but how soon after you changed your eating/exercise habits did you start noticing the pounds coming off? I’m about the same size as you and feel that I could lose about 8 pounds and I need some inspiration! While I am very diligent about exercising, eating well seems to come in waves–and I’ve got a MAJOR sweet tooth. Any advice?? Thanks for your fantastic blog, you are such an inspiration!

YUMMY! I love coconut! I’m making coconut lime shrimp tonight even! 🙂 Hope you can get through all your to-dos!
Em says
I know what you mean about the shorter term classes! My psych class is only 2 months long so it’s crazy how fast we move through material!
And that coconut looks so good…I still have yet to try it…you buy it unsweetened, correct?
You also reminded me that I need an oil change as well! By the way, your earrings in your last post are so pretty!
working says
I’m also getting my oil changed today, though I can’t walk to the dealer so I’ll have to get my car tomorrow, which is annoying. Good luck studying!

I agree… I wish everywhere I needed to go was in walking distance. I’d love that! Wouldn’t always be easy with a two year old in tow… but I’d make it work 🙂
Breakfast looks yummy!!!!

Hey Kath!
I tried these granola thingys you recommended. They are gooood, haha, espically if you need the extra energy.

Hi Kath,
I don’t comment much (sorry), but I am a geneticist that studies the genetic basis and origins of obesity and depression. I have a lot of articles on the role of nutrition in these disease, how they relate with exercise, and differences between nutrition/aging/fat deposition etc in men and women. I saw on your morning post you are reading articles on the role of fats in exercise. If you ever have trouble finding primary research, or just want more, email me ’cause I got a bunch!

I accidently hit, “submit” before I was finished.
=[ I was going to say, I could only find the little square bars at my Whole Foods. No “planks.” I’ll keep looking though. . .
I am doing well maintaining [and gaining a little]weight. It can be hard at times but I know I feel better this way.
And I have this funny relization. . .
Your blog is better than therapy.
I decided I wanted to meet with a therapist to help me with my body image struggle. She recommended this crazy structured plan where my mother has to force feed me basically. With your blog, you just make it so easy! Just be healthy and strong. It makes so much more sense to me.
Thank you so much. This is really helping me more than you’ll ever know.

kudos on walking and reading at the same time! I can barely walk as it is! Good luck on your to do list!
magpie says
Argh to-do lists. Mine is so long. Good luck with getting everything done!
Korin says
Do you guys not have Mobil Express by you? You just drive through, stay in the car and they change oil and do all that. It rules.

Good luck with the studying and paper writing. Maybe this is dorky, but if you learn anything new or interesting to you about sports nutrition, I would love seeing it on the blog. I know there is a big difference between the scientific stuff you’re reading and the magazine and newspaper articles where I get my info, so if you read anything that stands out to you, let us know!
Deb says
Kath, your breakfast looked so HUGE!!! It seems like more than just 1/3 cup oats!? Are they cooked or uncooked? Why is it that when I make 1/3 cup oats, it seems tiny and I am STARVED afterwards?? What is all the volume in your bowl? Please let me know when you get a chance.
Sidi says
@Deb Take a 3 cups cup and a third will look huge… Just kidding! Kath , you have the sense of humour, right? I always look at that PB full spoon. For me that would be enough, no oats next to it. But I’m not even 30% as active as Kath is, so she needs it. Hope you did’t get angry of what I just said Kath… 😉
Mema says
Deb, did you read the post? There’s a bunch of other stuff in there besides oats. That’s why it looks so big.
Justy2003 says
Deb-also notice that the bowl is a smaller bowl…probably smaller than a normal sized bowl. Either that or Kath uses a huge spoon 😉
Also, like Mema said, she adds other things besides oats to bulk it up! Bananas and pumpkin work great to fluff them up in my opinion.
Those planks sound so yummy…I may try to track some down…
Deb says
I did realize that there were other things in the bowl, just didn’t think that they all added up to what looks to be such a substantial amount of food! I just wondered if she fluffs it with something or some other trick of the trade I’m not aware of. Thx for the banana/pumpkin tip. I’ve never seen one of those granolaplanks, so I don’t know how big they could possibly make the bowl. Also I suppose the hemp milk could “push up” the oatmeal????

Katharine ,
When I started my weight loss the pounds came off really easily. The last 10 or so were much harder. You say you’re the same size as me – do you mean me now and me when I started? That would make a big difference. How fast it comes off depends on how much you have to lose and how much exercise/calorie reduction you’re doing compared to your normal habits. I’ve got a major sweet tooth too. Best advice: Don’t have anything sweet in the house. If you can’t control yourself, give it away to friends or neighbors. Then just don’t buy it. Going out for an ice cream or piece of cake will then feel like a treat.
Em ,
Yes, the coconut is unsweetened. I found it at EarthFare – it’s difference than the grainy sweetened kind. Much lighter in texture.
Emily ,
A geneticist – cool! The topics I have left include: Sweat/hydration and exercise and the female triad and exercise if you have any articles on those. (I already found them for lipids, protein, vitamins and minerals but if you have anything really cool and simple to understand, feel free to email them to me at KathEats at gmail dot com.
Sami ,
So glad to hear it 🙂
Korin,
Mobile Express sounds cool! If we didn’t live 1.25 miles from the Honda dealership, I’d definitely hunt one down.
tfh ,
I will share tidbits that surprise me. We’re studying carbs right now and big surprise: feel free to eat LOTS of them if you’re exercising regularly! He also said despite the rumors that you should do a longer duration of low intensity exercise for fat burn that the best bang for your buck is high intensity – even though you do burn more carbs during it (within reason, obviously). The reason? TBA! (We haven’t learned it yet)…
Deb ,
It’s a really small bowl. The granola is on top and the extra 1/2 a cup of berries might have given it some bulk. But there’s no trick. Well I guess the trick is stay away from small instant oatmeal packet portions and make voluminous rolled oats. But really, the bowl is probably 1.5 cups big compared to most these days that are 2-3 cups.
Sidi ,
I normally don’t use that much PB. My “spoonfuls” are usually level spoons filled about 2/3, which is about 2/3 of a tbsp. Not really that much!
