Thanks for all of your enthusiasm on BERF today! It’s strange running two blogs. I am certain that someday you will find a baby post on KERF and a food post on BERF! So far I have been pleased with how things have stayed logged in so I don’t have to do too much switching usernames and things.
I listened to Pregtastic while I packed up my suitcase. It’s always on when I’m doing things around the house. And let me tell you podcasts have changed showers! Set up a speaker and suddenly I don’t mind having to get ready for the day so much.
My clothes for the weekend have a purple + gray theme – my favorite colors of 2012! Everything I own seems to be those two : )
I paused for snacktime around 4:30. I had no idea what to make! But I was cold and wanted something hot. Oatmeal came to mind…
Back when I used to work full-time, I kept a canister of oats in my desk and would make oats in a mug with cinnamon and almonds nearly every afternoon for a snack. Case in point: this post! Why don’t I do this anymore!?
So this afternoon I microwaved a third of a cup of Holly’s Oatmeal (yes I said microwave!!) with half milk, half water and stirred in some Wild Squirrel PB. Two minutes on power level 6 was perfect.
Warm, drippy and filling!
Dinner tonight was another of Mother Karen. She brought us a jar of homemade bison tomato sauce and I saved it for a night I knew I wouldn’t want to cook much with all the packing going on.
But it sure made a wonderful and easy spaghetti dinner. Complete with the last of our goat cheese!
I just nibbled on a few corners left in my Valentine’s Day box of chocolates! We’re going to watch one more LOST and then go to bed. Unless we get sucked in… !
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
I like your idea of listening to podcasts while in the shower. I have a shower radio and MUST have music on while I’m showering/ getting ready for the day/ getting ready for bed. It just makes it so much less boring! That bison tomato sauce looks really tasty; I’ve never had bison, but I’ve heard great things about it!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
simple, comforting, classic food. my favorite! i always think oats have to be an entire meal — but 1/3 or 1/2 a cup with just a bit of nut butter is definitely snack appropriate. thanks for the reminder 🙂
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
sidenote: AMAZING how far your posts (and the whole blog!) has come!!!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Spaghetti is such a comfort food. I love it so much. Maybe that’s what should be for dinner for me tonight. 🙂
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Mmm, spaghetti! Mmm, oatmeal.
Oh yeah, it’s my night snack time! *runs to kitchen*
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says

Ash Bear says
Bison sauce? That sounds AND looks delicious! Have a great evening. I’m enjoying one episode of SMASH then heading to bed!
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
Pasta looks delicious. I’ve never had bison. I love listening to podcasts or audiobooks while I do things around the house, but I never thought to do so while taking a shower.
Amelia says
Where are your mugs from? I am revamping my kitchen and was looking for turquoise and orange mugs that are white on the inside. love the shape of yours!
KathEats says
They were an Open Sky promo but are unfortunately no longer available. I don’t remember the name because I’m away, but I think it was Brews and Hues!?
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I’ve never tried goat cheese with spaghetti, but it sounds like a great combination!
Cait's Plate says
I absolutely love oatmeal as a snack and keep at my desk for a comforting snack as well!
Good luck not getting sucked into LOST! I will be impressed if you manage not to! 🙂
Jen says
My co-worker eats oatmeal in a mug all the time for a mid-day snack!
I’ve never seen Lost – how many more seasons do you have to go through? What made you decide to watch it now vs. when it was on TV? There are a lot of shows that I haven’t seen but would love to view on DVD based on positive Hersey.
KathEats says
I didn’t used to be much of a TV show watcher. Still am not really – except for a few. I prefer to watch on DVD!
Kaila @healthyhelperblog! says
My mom has made a bison meat sauce before! It was incredible! It’s also delicious in chili! SO rich and flavorful!
Andrea@ Mainelyveggies says
Lost is oh so addicting! My man-friend and I watched every season in about 2 months. It seemed like our motto was “just one more episode…” which probably turned into 2 or 3 🙂
Catalina @ Cake with Love says
I always enjoy looking at your dinner and getting ideas!
Laura Ann says
It’s funny how you say “used to work full-time.” Seems like you work way more than full-time with all of your jobs! Whether here in SD has been beautiful… Can’t wait to see which parts of town you end up in!
Laura Ann says
er… “weather”
KathEats says
I probably do work just as many hours – but it’s a TOTALLY different feeling!
Emily says
hey kath, i just have a really random question that hopefully you’ll be okay with sharing! {before you were pregnant}, how many calories would you eat a day on average? i clicked on your link back to 2007 and it had an estimate of the number of cals you had that day {that was when you were losing weight, right?}. im going through some troubles figuring out how many i should be eating a day and finding a happy medium, so im simply curious {i know its all based on activity, height, and weight!}.
KathEats says
Between 1700-1900 a day, with a good workout
Clare @ SweetnSimple says
Your oats look awesome! Love the purple and grey 🙂
Ashley says
I did the same thing Emily did! And I have similar question. You wrote that you were trying to eat your total net calories. Was that in your maintance or losing phase?
Robyn @ Blueberries and Oats says
A little bowl of oatmeal sounds like the perfect snack to me! I don’t know why I never think of it…
Danielle says
Yum! Another opportunity to enjoy oatmeal. I should integrate a mug of oats into my days, too. Thanks for the idea 🙂 hope you get a good night’s sleep tonight! Happy weekend!
Elisabeth says
The spaghetti looks delicious – my favorite meal to make! Have fun in San Diego – I’m definitely jealous as I’m wishing for summer weather here in Ohio (although, I definitely can’t complain about this winter!) 🙂
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I’m convinced that goat cheese tastes good on everything.
Katy says
I have never thought about listening to podcasts in the shower…must do that. Love the photos you took of the oatmeal…in fact I love the whole look of the blog. I have just gone self-hosting but dislike the templates I have to choose from. May I ask who designed your blog? I’m looking to create a better look for mine. Thanks,
katy x
KathEats says
I did it myself 🙂 I use Thesis theme, which is easily customized with just a little bit of education (and photoshop)
Katy says
Wow!!! I am very impressed. I need to get photoshop 🙂
willow says
I love the idea of oats as a quick & easy food pick me up, but I work in a nut-free school. Any ideas on non-perishable protein-filled add ins?
Khushboo Thadani says
Protein powder?
KathEats says
Do you have a fridge? If so cottage cheese, milk or yogurt. Even shelf stable milk? Could you use sunflower butter? It’s seed based.
Khushboo Thadani says
Love your dinner- spaghetti in marinara sauce is definitely my go-to comfort food!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Glad you were on board with the microwave for the oatmeal…honestly, one day, as a new mom…you will kiss the ground your power lines run on because it will power your microwave and one day, you will really just…need it 🙂
I do know women who don’t use the microwave but honestly, I love mine. Motherhood, babies, kids…perspective changer on convenience-related things!
Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl says
The Oatmeal & spaghetti look delicious. And congrats on getting BERF up and running. Looks great. Love the header.

mmm, the spaghetti looks yum, my 4 year old loves all things pasta which means I don’t have to struggle to get him to eat. I’m going to give this ago this evening, may even try making some fresh spaghetti with my little one!
Thanks for the inspiration x.
