When I watch House Hunters it always gets under my skin when people say "Oh this balcony would be perfect for morning coffee and the newspaper." I’d like to know how many of those people really drink their coffee and read a paper newspaper on their decks and balconies after they move. And, why not just say "drinkin’ coffee." Why does it have to always be morning coffee.
Similarly, whenever Matt describes Great Harvest, he always tells people "The bread is perfect for sandwiches or your morning toast." I know he uses morning because it puts toast in perspective, but it still gets on my nerves! I just picture some businessman with a glass of orange juice and a slice of toast with butter. "Part of this complete breakfast."
No idea why I’m explaining these gripes to you other than the fact that I had morning toast today
A fat slice of Great Harvest Warrenton’s Apple Crunch bread topped with Naturally Nutty Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower Butter, half a sliced banana, chia seeds and a drizzle of honey.
Whenever I see other bloggers eat toast with banana, it never looks very filling. Like air! But this was pretty filling, and it tasted amazing. JUST what I wanted! Hope it holds me over – It was a pretty good amount of bread!
I also had some beer straight from the keg…
Just kidding! That’s cool coffee 🙂
Today is moving day for Karen (she has a 26′ U-haul to unpack) so we’ll be helping her all day. Hopefully with a little pizza to end it!
megan @ whatmegansmaking says
your morning toast looks delicious 🙂 good luck with the moving – i’m guessing it will be a long day!
mindy @ just a one girl revolution. says
I’m not a huge fan of bananas, but that looks really tasty!!
Rachel (Two Healthy Plates) says
I always wonder about that too! I’m more likely to think “oh this balcony would be great for taking photos of my breakfast in the morning light!” haha
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Lol…I guess we all have our quirks, huh? 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Pizza is the perfect moving day fuel! Your toast looks delicious. Have a great day Kath and good luck with moving all of Karen’s stuff! I hope it goes quickly!
Samantha @ Bikini Birthday says
Yeah, “morning coffee” and “morning toast” are kind of redundant.
…unless of course they mean “mourning” coffee. As in, mourning the fact that they have to get out of bed.
S @ extremebalance.net/blog says
like!
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
Pizza is a MUST after moving 🙂
I like toast for breakfast but it isn’t filling for me, no matter how much nut butter I put on top!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
That is my kinda breakfast!
Christine says
I wonder the same thing too watching House Hunters and the like.
Honestly, I have a pretty nice (small) back deck and a porch up front–but don’t really use them for eating. I especially don’t use it for breakfast–which I tend to eat as soon as I get out of the shower, with wet hair, in my PJs! Nope, not doing that in front of the neighbors!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I love eating toast for breakfast! Its my favorite!
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
LOL at the morning coffee thing!! That’s gonna grind my gears now you’ve said it…arhghg!!
I thought that was beer for a second..I was going to express great shock! :p
Tina says
I love hearing other bloggers’ little quirks and pet peeves. Makes things entertaining.
And I’m always surprised at how much toast, banana, and nut butter can fill me up!
Hannah says
Hmm, *someone’s* wearing her nitpicky pants while watching the telly! 😉 I’ve never used chia seeds as a non-gelled topping. Awesomeness!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I always wondered how people ate just toast for breakfast, but I had an untoasted PB sandwich this morning and it’s holding me over great!! I guess some bread and PB really does work 🙂 Happy Friday!!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
have fun moving! i always secretly like it because it’s one of those workouts that is super productive too 🙂 hope it all goes well!
Nicole @ yuppie yogini says
It’s funny how many stupid phrases people say on House Hunters:
Oh honey, I think this closet will be big enough for my clothes. Where will we put yours?
Ummm…I don’t think this house has enough storage.
I like the house, but I’m not sure about the color of the walls.
Matt says
That’s a “drink” phrase.
Ella says
hilarious, this is so true! the requisite “woman takes the entire closet” joke – and sometimes just for her shoes. I also am sooo sick of guys saying that a “man cave” is on the top of their list. ENOUGH ABOUT THE MAN CAVES!
VeggieGirl says
Hahaha 😀
Good luck with Karen on the move!
melissa @ the delicate place says
i like watching house hunters but often get annoyed esp. with first timers (like property virgins) holy crap these people are ridiculous! so uncompromising, there is no perfect house! they all sound very spoiled too!
Sarah K. @ the Pajama Chef says
i agree. and another thing i hate about hgtv even more than the ridiculous first time home buyers is the renting shows! now those people are REALLY spoiled! like college students in chicago saying, we’re tired of cheap student living. come on! what college kid can pay $1000/mo in rent! their rentals are nicer than mine!
oh, kath, i also agree w/ you- ‘morning’ is really annoying!
Jamie @ Food in Real Life says
Oh House Hunters! I love the international ones. And I love the awkward “cooking in the kitchen together” scene when it is 6 months later. It is so forced. You know what I’m talking about? They are like cutting cheese with the same knife? Or she is doing something that makes no sense like cutting baby carrots in half. Anyway..that toast sounds delish. And that coffee really does look like beer!
Kath says
OMG totally forgot to mention this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I camera crew was coming over to film me in my kitchen the LAST thing I would make would be bread from a bag slapped with PB&J!!!! It’s ALWAYS PB&J!! Or bagged lettuce being poured into a bowl.
It’s totally fine if that’s what they eat on a regular basis, but at least make it look nicer for a camera – pour the lettuce out before they arrive and pretend to chop it!
Jamie @ Food in Real Life says
LOL it IS always salad from the bag! But if they came to your kitchen they would probably start a spin off!
mariaeatsbeets says
It’s good to see you eating something different for breakfast. I like my toasted rye bread with TJ’s sunflower nut butter, jalapeno apple jam, sliced banana, and chia seeds. It’s a little on the savory side and very satisfying. I usually toast two small slices, and add a half or whole banana depending on the size. We need to get some great harvest bread here in Indy. All the different flavors look amazing. Have you thought about adding GH bread to your opensky?
Kath says
Hmm..I don’t think that would work business/insurance/logistics wise 🙁
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
My toast phases usually start when the weather cools down, so likely in a couple of weeks 🙂
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
‘morning beer’ would have been awesome 🙂
but “morning coffee” is good, too!
Heather says
haha I never really thoght about the morning coffee comment. too funny!
Bee Goes Bananas says
Mmm that toast looks delicious!
Where did you find the glass you drink coffee and ice water out of?
Kath says
It’s just a Ball jar
Andrea (@ Puppy Dog Tales) says
Too funny. I think using the word “morning” helps to create ambiance. Kind of like “reading by the fire”. Who does that? I would just fall asleep because a) I’d be nice and warm and b) it would be too dark and c) I’m too exhausted to enjoy ambiance. Ha!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Hehehe! I’m exhausted this morning but thanks for giving me a good laugh! So true about the “morning” bit, and honestly, I don’t know many people that go outside and eat breakfast on their balcony often enough to make it a major factor in their house purchase. Have a great day! 🙂
Caitlyn (A Spoonful of LIfe) says
For a second there, I thought you really were having beer for breakfast…then I scrolled down! I was going to say, it must either be a really good day or a really bad day to break into the keg at this hour!!
Have fun moving Karen in! I hope she likes her new place.
Carolyn @ lovinlosing says
Good luck with the move!!
Kaci Higgins says
I totally concur with your entry complaints! I actually was just telling my sis the other day about how much I hate that! Lol!
Chelsea at Striking Balance says
Toast with peanut butter and banana is one of my favourite simple breakfasts. So quick to throw together, and surprisingly usually holds me over quite well!
Exmodel says
haha I totally did that in my last apt, i payed extra for an outdoor space that i had breakfast on one time, and spent the whole time swatting away bugs and thinking “yea this is why i don’t eat outside.”
Simply Life says
I definitely need more than a piece of toast to get me going in the morning!
terry says
You mentioned other bloggers, and I wondred which ones you would recommend? I enjoy reading yours so much! Thanks for sharing your life with us.
Kath says
Oh man, you can’t ask me to pick favorites!!
But I do have a blogroll on my Favorites page that has a ton of other fun blogs
S @ extremebalance.net/blog says
Maybe those are super-rigid people who have coffee according to the phases of the day… as in, “this balcony is ideal for my morning coffee, but I’m afraid I’ll need more of an indoor nook for my afternoon coffee, to say nothing of the hammock for my evening coffee. Have you any properties that can fulfill *that*?” 😉
Lauren at KeepItSweet says
i can only eat something like toast with toppings for breakfast if i don’t have much time…. if not, i’d eat it so fast and need more food!
Allison K says
Isn’t it funny the little things that bother us? I know thatI have them, but for the life of me I can’t remember what they are at the moment. Other, than it bothers me when people leave their blinkers on after they have changed lanes.
Camille says
Psh, I had toast at 9pm yesterday… and there is nothing wrong with that! 🙂
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I always think the same thing- that it just looks like air. But yours looks really good! Especially since the slice is so thick.
barefootgirl (our first CSA) says
toast rocks!! I’ve been spreading mine with apple butter & sprinkling with chopped walnuts 🙂
Kristina @ spabettie says
uh oh… is it BAD that I didn’t even flinch when you said you were drinking beer?
uuuhh ooohhh… 😀
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I don’t know if that would KEEP me full but it sounds delicious!
Cathy B. @ Bright Bakes says
Yum! Naturally Nutty Sunflower Butter and banana + chia seeds on chewy whole grain homemade bread equals my fav sandwich ever! It’s my go-to on all car trips! 🙂
Cathy B. @ Brightbakes
Heather says
I would love a balcony on my apartment not to drink my morning coffee but to grow tomatoes, lettuce and herbs.
Have fun with the unpacking – sounds like an adventure!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Haha…that’s totally something I would say though. I always comment on how much I enjoy a morning cup of coffee on the deck. I really do.
I think it’s because there’s so much comfort in the words ‘morning’ and ‘coffee.’ I don’t know.
Anyways, your *morning* toast looks delish! 😀
Christina @ ilovefetacheese says
Hahaha I always think the same thing too – it never looks filling! Maybe I just need to try it one of these days…that bread looks awesome.
Laughter-Loving Stacy says
Ha, ha- for me there is something about saying ‘morning coffee’ that makes my morning more… er… centered? I am nooot finding the word I want, haha. shoot. All well.
Yummm banana.
Ashley says
My question is. Do people still really read the newspaper?? Let alone on their porch? 🙂
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
I do miss peanut butter banana toast since I stopped buying bananas, but I still enjoy peanut butter toast topped with jam — a warm, melty PB&J. What’s not to like?
Katie says
The only time I really like toast is when I am sick and it is smothered in butter and topped with cinnamon sugar. That, to me, is comfort food.
Jennifer says
I totally agree with the HH balcony/coffee pet peeve. The other one that bugs me is all those HGTV shows refer to the master BR as a master retreat. Sorry, a resort in the Caribbean = Retreat. My bedroom, that I sleep in every night = not so much.
Steph@stephsbitebybite says
I have the same feelings towards toast and bananas for breakfast. They just don’t last very long in my belly at all.
alison says
I totally agree with your House Hunters observations. I always wonder how many of them actually do drink their (morning) coffee outside. I’m also always tickled by the way they all say “this kitchen (or dining room or patio) is perfect for entertaining.”
Alyssa says
I miss morning toast…perhaps I’ll indulge tomorrow 🙂
Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks says
Toast with PB and a Banana is filling….for a couple of hours. Then it’s snack time!
Amber K says
Toast never fills me up so I almost never have it for breakfast. I might have it with eggs, hash and beans for dinner though.
Jacklyn Smith says
Hi Kath,
I just went to a Great Harvest Bread Company this past Monday to pick up some bread. I was reading their ingredient list & more than half their breads have High Fructose Corn Syrup. Ugghh!!! Why? It is also the 3rd ingredient listed on the label. Me no llkey. The only loaf I found w/ no HFCS was the Honey Whole Wheat.
Kath says
Sorry to hear that – most of the bakeries no longer use it. Most use sugar, honey or invert sugar (as we will be doing).
notyet100 says
toast with banana looks so yum,.
Kristan says
My husband and I laugh at that all the time on House Hunters. People forget they have a life and will probably never be out there on that balcony:)
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
ahahaha I loved the beer fake out – I totally agree with the morning toast comment. I picture some 1950’s businessman with his wife in her apron serving him.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
love a nice thick slice of bread with banana!
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
That toast looks incredible – and seriously a LOT of things people say on House Hunters irk me. haha
Natalia - a side of simple says
Pizza- that’s all the motivation I need for hard labor =)
Kathy W. says
My youngest sister’s favorite breakfast is toast topped with yogurt, spread like a nut butter.
Jean@RoastedRootsandPumpkinSpice says
Tasty looking MORNING toast and MORNING coffee you had today! 😛
stacey-healthylife says
The iced coffee does look like beer. 🙂 The apple toast sounds yummy.
Carlee says
I am a big eater and toast is just not gonna cut it in the morning. Although, alongside some eggs toast is a beautiful thing.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I never have toast for breakfast because I’m almost positive that it would not hold me over!
jassy says
what is it like to drink coffee from a jar? 🙂 banana for me is just plain…i can’t combine peanut butter/bread or anything with it.
expat says
I so miss house hunters now that we live in Munich, but that is another topic. I have the same pet peeve about people referring to a deck/patio as a good place for morning coffee. Evening coffee would be just as enjoyable there. My husband is Australian and slices avocado and puts it on his buttered toast with black pepper (and eats it anytime of the day). I know it sounds strange, but try it, it is delicious! And, avocados are so healthy for you.
Jenn says
Haha, I understand that pet peeve! I’m a teacher and it bugs me when people say “You’re a school teacher?” Because I don’t teach school, do I? I always say, “I’m a First Grade Teacher.” Why do people insist on putting the word school before teacher?
On another note, one of these days I have to try some Great Harvest Bread it always looks so delicious!
Heidi - apples under my bed says
I love the Willow plate, my mum has loads of Willow 🙂 And this toast (note the word ‘morning’ is decidedly absent) looks scrumptious!
Heidi xo
Kelly says
I agree. Toast is for anytime. And anyone who disagrees has never seen me eat. I have weird hang-ups about how people put words together also. 😉
