Stealing his oats! KERF Readers, meet Larry ๐ And Tanya!
Roni took a cute self photo with Larry and I wanted one too, but I was too short to see over his shoulder ๐
The PepsiCo Sustainability Center is really cool and made of TONS of recycled materials. Our chairs are made from recycled Aquafina bottles! The insulation in the walls is recycled denim. And this info board is made from oats ๐
Here’s a sneak peak of Quakers new True Delight bars. I tasted a bite of the Toasted Coconut Banana Macadamia Nut – YUM! They have a pretty good nutrition label sans a few sugar alcohols. They’re hitting shelves soon.
Lunch!
Although I wasn’t terribly hungry from my earlier big bowl of oats, lunch was excellent. I made a salad with a bunch of fresh ingredients.
Mixed greens, cuc, broccoli (perfectly steamed), tomato, chicken strips, tuna, cheese, oil + balsamic vinegar.
And the orange in the fruit bowl was just calling my name!
Lunch was calorically light, but I’ve got plenty of snacks if I need them later ๐
Me with PB this morning –
Oat Friendly, Heart Healthy Lecture
I am preaching to the choir here, but did you know…
- Heart disease is now a women’s disease
- Women who have a stroke are much more likely to die within 30 days than men.
- Unusual fatigue is a top symptom reported before heart attacks in women
- Women with diabetes have a very high risk of heart disease
- Coffee and alcohol are huge causes of heart palpitations.
We’re learning about heart health and cholesterol by Dr. Annabelle Volgman, a cardiologist here in Chicago.
Better go pay attention!
Oh She Glows says
haha Kath did they order the organic PB just for you? ๐
Stephanie says
Oh Kath, that new toasted coconut banana bar sounds delicious…I might have to do some bribing. I’ll go running with you tomorrow morning if I can get my hands on that bar ๐ haha
Hil says
I don’t mind any preaching to the choir about women and heart disease. My husband’s dissertation is on heart disease and I have a history of it in my family, so it’s an important issue to me. So many people have no idea how important and how big a concern it is! Thank you!
Kelsey says
I am looking forward to the release of those new bars! The dark choco rberry one sounds delish. That salad looks soooo good, too. :]
Kath says
Oh She Glows,
I told them not to worry about but they got some anyway!!! I was thrilled ๐
Stephanie ,
I GOT ONE FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kath
Julia says
I can’t wait for those True Delight bars; you’re really lucky you get a sneak peak ๐
Who knew that Mr Quaker guy had a name? And Larry of all names…. it totally cracked me up! I just though he was called Oatmeal Dude. Quaker sure knows how to treat their guests right!
Amber says

Madison (FollowMyWeigh) says
ooh that coconut banana one sounds AWESOME! so cool you got a sneak peak =D.
love the photo with larry =P
Maureen says
Eeep, it’s hard to hear that fact about coffee causing heart palpitations. It’s so wrong to rely on the stuff for energy as much as I do (…but it tastes so right! *grin*)
Fancy says
The weather here is gross today, but at least the skyline is still pretty. Just imagine how gorgeous it is when it’s sunny outside and there are tons of boats in the lake!
Shelby says
Ooo your hubby better watch out for the Quaker Oats man ๐
Moran says
Oh those bars look really good!!
eliza says
those new bars look amazing cant wait till they hit shelves!
Runeatrepeat says
I actually just bought a box of those True Delights bars yesterday. I was going to review them over the weekend. Sounds like you liked to coconut one ๐
caitlin says
everything looks so fun!!
Kim says
Hey, Kath! I was just wondering, since PepsiCo is sponsoring the event, would you feel comfortable giving a negative review to one of the new Quaker products you tried (if it came to that?? Or would you just refrain from mentioning it at all?
Kath says
Kim ,
I would tell the truth. For example, the sent us some of the Oatmeal To Go bars which I immediately noticed had “partially hydrogenated” on the ingredient list….so I just didn’t try them. I probably wouldn’t eat something that didn’t look good!
Kath
Biz319 says
What a fun day so far! Sadly, I am short too and would need a boost!
Maggie says
This sounds like such a fun trip ๐ I can’t wait for those bars to come out! Have a great Saturday ๐
Marlow says
I wish they made a gluten free oat!! While oats are naturally gluten free, they are the MOST contaminated item out there! I miss steel cut oats SO bad! Glad you’re having fun, that salad looks yummy! Be sure to visit Millennium Park!
Cara says
Sounds like a lot of fun. I love that I can now follow you on twitter ๐
Angie says
Great pictures!
Can’t wait to try one of those bars when they come out.
BethT says
I swear those granola bars are already out in some markets – I saw the macadamia one a couple of weeks ago when visiting TN.
Allison says
I see on Twitter you mention Physiology with a gulp. I have to take that next semester along with first semester of Organic (no lab yet). Am I doomed with taking both of those in the same semester?
Megan says
I have actually seen those bars at my Target, but haven’t picked them up yet. Looks like you are having a fabulous time and the Pepsico place is cool!
emmy says
it sounds like you guys are having a fabulous day!
rachelfresh says
Yep I saw those True Delight bars at WalMart today!
Looks like a great time- enjoy the rest of your trip Kath!!
Lisa says
I’ve been having computer issues and I just now caught up with your Chicago adventures – it looks like you’re having a ball! I hope the rest of your travels go swimmingly and safely!
haya says
p.s. none of your links to other people’s sites work (like jenna and tanya). you might want to look into that.
glad you’re having fun.
Amanda in Pittsburgh says
Hey Kath,
I’m glad you’re having a good time! I’m so jealous of all of the treats you get!
On a side note, I bought the Polar FT40 today. On your recommendation, I got Polar, but how do you feel about the FT40? Any thoughts? I’m new to the whole HRM thing, but I wanted the best.
Diana says
Looks like you’re having a great trip so far. That’s so cool you are able to blog about everything while you’re away…I usually slack off on the blogging when I leave my home. Go you!

Oh She Glows says
haha that is too funny they bought you that organic PB! How sweet!!! They reallly roll out the red carpet ๐
Kath says
Allison ,
It varies so much by professor that there’s just no way to predict your workload. I really enjoyed Physiology (although it was really challenging) and I am enjoying Orgo (although it’s impossible). Good luck!
haya ,
Thanks – I think I fixed them.
Amanda in Pittsburgh,
I really don’t know anything about the FT40 because I have the F4 and have never seen that one. Sorry!
Kath
Kristin says
You said those Quaker bars aren’t for sale yet, but I just saw some at Target yesterday, I was planning to try them, but I still had too many Fiber One bars left at home, I’ll try them next time.
Anna says
I found some Quaker True Delight bars at Walmart last week. I bought the Honey Roasted Cashew Mixed Berry kind and they were pretty much amazing. I’m not a fan of oats (sorry Quaker!) but I found these to be really flavorful, you couldn’t even really tell you were eating an oat bar. The cashews mixed with the cherries and cranberries is the perfect nutty/sweet balance. Also, it’s very chewy which I really like. Very yummy. I can’t wait to try the other kinds!
I just wanted to give my small review!
