I don’t know if it’s being back to school, or eating a lot lately, or that it’s dark in this student union but I just want to keep eating! I suppose my stomach is full, but my mouth is whining like a grumpy child. This lunch was good, but it didn’t feel complete. Humph! Hot tea is always my “go to” when my palate wants something more, but I already had some! Maybe I’ll go back for another cup…
Ham, cheddar and jalapeño on beer bread –
Carrots with lemon-yogurt hummus (need to make some more of this!)
And strawberries with whipped cottage cheese –
Maybe it’s because I combined the berries/CC so it felt like I only had three parts to my lunch and my brain is missing the fourth!?
Lunch was about 500 kcal, 9 grams fiber and 37 grams protein (whoa cottage cheese and beer bread!)
I’ve got a while before Physio lab and am mostly caught up on my school work! What to do! I’d go out walking but it’s cold….er…not hot out there. Guess I’ll just pitter around on the Internet….and maybe try doing some Stats.

It doesn’t look like a lot of food. Perhaps that is why you aren’t full? You are a volume eater and this isn’t a lot of volume. Perhaps you can round up a snack?
Katie says
I hate when that happens! I have this awful stomach to brain disconnect when I just want to keep eating and eating even when I’ve had enough. Hope the faux-hunger pangs go away.
rhodeygirl says
yum it looks like it’s strawberry season!!!!
by the way- I introduced my bf to your pumpkin + yogurt (fage 2% for us) combination and he loves it so much he has it for a snack almost every day!! thanks for the inspiration…

I have no idea why my name linked to Jenna’s Url… very weird!
sorry to cause some confusion.

I hate when the hunger, or at least the want for food cannot be calmed. BTW you sandwich looks amazing. I love ham, cheese and jalepenos. The jalepenos really hit the spot! mmm.
Rachel says
Kath,
I love your cute green spoon! Where did you get it? Thanks for doing such a great job with your blog, your take on balancing life and healthy habits is refreshing and fun!

Just to add another comment regarding cosmetics~ since it seems everyone here is health conscience, this is a site I use constantly:
http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com/index.php
Search any item in your makeup bag or in your shower to see it’s risk factor. I was really shocked about most things I used! Remember, your skin is a digestive organ, too!
Ally says
After reading so much about the lemon hummus I just HAVE to make it today!
It is a bit cool out, but I think i’m going to lay out and try to get some sun x)
GreenTea says
Tina O.
I looked at the site, and I’m not sure how it works I guess.
I cannot really tell what criteria are they using to determine these things? Or where their information that a certain ingredient has high risk…
GreenTea says
ha…that was not a complete thought
but I meant to say “or where their information that a certain ingredient has a high risk comes from.”

so cool we have a guy! I just got back from Florida and woke up this morning to SNOW! UGH!! lol! I missed the makeup discussion this morning. I have to say I almost never wear makeup (too much work plus I just like being able to wash my face when I go to the bathroom -_^) but the makeup item I use the most is eyeliner-it makes your eyes “pop” and can be clean/classy or smokey/sexy! It’s just a nice all-around polish for your face (I believe eyes are the most sensual part of a body-when I meet people, I always look at their eyes first, but I know it’s different for everyone! I have one friend, a guy -_^ who always looks at a girl’s BUTT first! lol)
NCCarter says
I forgot to comment this morning on the must-have beauty products. For me, it’s got to be Bobbi Brown’s creamy corrector and concealer for under-eye circles. Beyond that, I’m pretty much obsessed with all beauty products….skin care, makeup, hair….like someone else said, I could live in Sephora.
laura says
hey everyone i m going to Magnolia and they featrue a lot of risotto, the one i was looking at was mushroom risotto. is that usually healthy?
Ana says
Just have a quick question b/c I know some of you use google-are the accounts free if I want to set one up?
Katie R says
Ana- Yep! Gmail is free!
KarenR says
I missed the makeup conversation, too! I think I’m the only one here who needs to fake eyebrows. Curse of the redheads! My most very favorite thing I started using this winter is Cetaphil cream that comes in the tub. I have dry sensitive skin and I can use that everywhere, even on my face without clogging my pores. I feel like an old lady at night dipping into the big tub and rubbing it all over my face and hands (and elbows, and feet…) but it even works well near my eyes!
Also, I’m laughing out loud at the “my friend” conversation. Like we weren’t weird enough already with all the obsessing about hummus!
You guys make me happy.
Stephanie says
Kath-you should have “the husband” package and sell his breads-they look amazing!!!!!!! and always make me hungry when looking and reading about them
Kelly T says
I would definately buy the crackers he makes.
They had strawberries for buy one get one free at my local grocery store but the whole display was picked clean. I was pretty upset. I just thought i would share cause I’m still bitter. Im always a little bit bitter.
BethT says
Laura – risotto at restaurants is usually made with butter, so just be aware of that. It IS delicious, but if it’s made with butter just know it will be a little high in fat.
JB says
how does everyone preserve avocados? I only used half of one today and wasn’t sure what to do with the other half. thanks!
Annie says
Kath – Is there any reason you eat almond butter instead of peanut butter? I did a quick search and couldn’t find a discussion about it and when I look at the nutritionals, they are pretty comparable. Just wondering if it’s just your taste preference, or if there’s some other reason.
Tina O. says
GreenTea~
You just type a product name, a company name or an ingredient into the search bar, then go from there. It takes a little playing around with to see how it works.
As for the reaserch, click on ‘about’ at the top right and it tells you all about it.
Allison K. says
Last night as I was making my sandwich for lunch today, I felt like it was a little boring. I remembered that you often throw jalapenos on your sandwiches, and I have to say, they added the perfect amount of flavor, interest and kick!
Michelle says
Kath,
My husband and I were out exploring Charlotte today and ended up eating lunch at Crisp. It was delicious! And so was Starbucks afterwards 🙂 I think you might need to introduce us to some more great restaurants. We saw so many as we were riding around that I wouldn’t even know where to start!
Megan says
Hi! In the last picture of this post, is the green and brown fabric I see your lunch bag?? If so, it’s super cute! Where’d you get it! I’ve been looking for a new lunch bag/box/something!!!

I have been taking a multi vitamin for almost a year now and it includes 100% iron.. and I eat a pretty healthy balanced diet ..however it doesnt included any red meat.
I just found out I was anemic so my mom bought me iron pills which have 150 DV of iron..
Should I stop taking my iron pill or the multi vitamin?? Or keep taking both??
BethT says
JB re: avocado: keep the pit in the half you don’t use, sprinkle with lemon juice and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. It will still turn a bit brown but not as bad if you don’t do this.
Sonia says
Must be the weather…I am constantly thinking food too and I drank 4 cups of water already after lunch.

I hate it when I’m full and keep eating anyway! Darn tasty things…

rhodeygirl ,
Yay for men liking pumpkin!! Mine doesn’t care for it much in general…
Rachel ,
Spoon’s from Crate and Barrel
laura ,
Restaurant risotto is known to be pretty high in calories and fat (lots of butter and cheese) but like all restaurant dishes, have a small portion and fill up with a salad on the side. You could also ask your server for it to be prepared with less butter/cheese, but it could already be prepared (or they might not listen!) But if risotto is what you want, get it and enjoy it – sloooowly and savor every bite.
Stephanie ,
We’d love to find a way to sell the breads, but I’m not sure legally and payment-wise how we’d do it. Would they still be fresh after a 2-3 day shipment? It’s definitely something we’re brainstorming, but not really that seriously. We just need to speak to someone who knows that kind of stuff!
Annie ,
I love almond butter purely for the taste (I had PB this morning!). It’s a little sweeter than PB so it goes well with breakfast.
Michelle ,
You should have joined us for dinner this past Saturday! Didn’t you just move here?? And isn’t Crisp the best!?!? Want to meet me for lunch one Sat? We could do a blog lunch there coming up – I think there are at least 3-5 other KERF readers I might be able to round up for a big get-together 🙂 I know TONS of good restaurants if you want recommendations 🙂
Megan ,
Yes, that’s my lunch bag! It folds up into a little compact case when I’m through. I ordered it from ReusableBags.com but I found them at my grocery store too!
http://www.reusablebags.com/store/reisenthel-mini-maxi-shopper-eden-long-handle-p-706.html
Eliza,
That’s a question for a vitamin and mineral expert. Did the doctor who determined you’re anemic not have a recommendation? I’d check with him/her to be sure what you do is safe.
JB,
There’s an avocado solution on the FAQ page under “Cooking Questions”

I just bought the best jeans ever.
This has nothing to do with anything.
I just really needed to put it out there.
Also, we may not be able to afford groceries for the rest of the month because of this but WHATEVER.
Jeans!

Kath,
What is the difference in taste b/w those pepperconin peppers you see on salad bars and in pizza versus the jalopenos you eat? I’ve never had jalopeno.
Also, if you ever find yourself bored again, I can give you plenty of hw to keep busy…….jk!

and now I need to know what kind of jeans these are, Kiala.
pretty please.

Kiala, I bought awesome jeans too – Banana Republic urban fit. Because I am urban.

Be careful everyone!
KATH: Thanks so much for answering my questions! 🙂

Kiala ,
Are you trying to torture us!?!? What kind are they!!!!???
I just bought GAP Long and Lean and GAP Essential Jeans and haven’t been happier with 2 pairs in a looong time.
Susan ,
Jalapeños are spicier and a little less sweet. You gotta try ’em!
Suzanne ,
Thanks for the heads up!

Love this blog. Really good ideas for what to eat. I looked, but could not find, how to make lemon-yogurt hummus. Since I love all three items, I’d like to try them together. Do you just mix yogurt and hummus and add a squirt of lemon juice? I saved all the oatmeal recipes, cause I love oatmeal, too. And almond butter. And broccoli. And……………..

im really happy someone brought up jeans….
ok, i have a very odd body shape, i am 5’10 and i get 25 or 26 (i think that is size 1 or 2 maybe) in BKE jeans, but these are so expensive and the pockets are so long they make my butt look funny, has anyone out there found anything 25×34 jeans with small/short pockets?
I’m hard to please i know
Kath says
Jean,
The yellow box on the upper right corner is a search box – you could find it that way. But I decided it was worthy of a recipe page!

Kath, Long and lean from Gap are my FAVORITE jeans!! I’ve had a pair for two years and they still make my ass look great! haha
Amandamoo says
Eliza-Too much iron is very dangerous so call your doctor asap.
Kiala-What kind of jeans are we talking about here? And while we’re on the topic – little miss stubs for legs needs advice in the jeans department. Short legged ladies? Any suggestions?
Kiala says
Oh sorry! They are Silver brand Tuesday fit, I think? They’re just super tight in the butt area, which is awesome ladies am I right? And low riding, which is good for me because it makes me look like I have a waist and they flare a little but not too much. I love them.
AND I got some other kind that I’ve never heard of, but they’re skinny jeans, dark rinse and I bought them to replace my old Fire ones. The zipper gave out on those Saturday night during some excessive karaoke maneuvers.
Kiala says
Oh, and I’m 5’8″ tall and weigh about 150 trying to get back down to 140.
I’m not really trying all that hard.
Anyway, these work for me and that sized body.

I usually eat too much for dinner as it’s the one meal that I get to eat at home and my dad always serves a huge plate of many different kinds of fruit so I always fill so bloated eating way too much fruit despite being full for dinner.
It’s like I cannot stop.
RachelD says
Got to love that NC weather right Kath? I was in Concord yesterday and it was 70+, I walked out of my Apt. in Greensboro this morning and it was Snowing! honest to god I couldn’t believe it. I got some good earth tea today because you talk about it so much and I love tea. I’m sure I’ll love it just like everything else I have tried because of your blog. Thanks!
Kath says
Alicia ,
Could you talk to your dad about reducing the fruit portion if it’s making you feel sick? Just becuase it’s there doesn’t mean you have to eat it.
RachelD,
I know!! Saturday was beautiful, yesterday was winter. But SNOW!?!? Wow. Our heat was off last night and it’s only 58* in here right now and I’m freezing. But have you SEEN the forecast for Friday!??!? 81*!!!!!!!

I guess that would be another good blog. The jeans you can’t live without 🙂
Another Kelly says
I’m 5’1″ and I LOVE Citizens for Humanity. Most department stores will hem them up for free (sewing on the original hem is usually an extra charge) so you can get them the exact length you want. I’ve also worn Express jeans a lot in the past but these fit me the best. For dress pants and such I LOVE Banana Republic and J Crew petites. Some BR stores even carry the petites in stock now.
Lauren says
Just wanted to add to this thread because I LOVE jeans! My absolute favorite brands are Rock & Republic and Tahari. They never disappoint me. I also like Mavi (a little less pricey than the others, which is always nice), and have had good luck with the Express Editor jeans. Anyway, I definitely get indulgent when it comes to jeans, but I’m willing to spend when it comes to things I love and know I’ll wear for a long time!
Sonia says
Amandamoo, another miss short legs here 🙂
I like the Express jeans – they have them in 3 fits – short/regular/long for almost every size.
Kiala, I am always hunting for great jeans. Will check out the Sliver brand.
