Back to the grind this morning. Actually, it’s my last Monday morning in corporate America! How exciting!
One way I’ve learned to deal with getting past an eating indulgence is to realize that I have the power to take the extra weight right back off. I know what to do, and I just need to put it in action. The water weight – or extra 1/2 pound from a BIG indulgence – will come off as soon as I get back to my routine. It’s so refreshing to know that your weight is in your hands. You are in control. Being healthy is all about making good decisions.
Breakfast #1
Pre-gym toast. What else is new?
Workout
Had no trouble getting up today and bounded out of bed. 15 minutes ET, 30 minutes Stairmaster, 10 minutes abs. 400 kcal burned.
Breakfast #2
I missed my oatmeal!! Started my day with a huge bowl with apples and cinnamon. Since we’re traveling next week, I got a half gallon of vanilla soy milk (I get the Harris Teeter store brand) to have for fun. I like soy milk a lot but I go through phases when I go back to skim. But it’s mighty tasty in oatmeal! Yum, as usual.
Plus coffee…
Total breakfast calories: 508.
Today
Off to ride the lightrail. I’ve got 1,000 things to do today, both for work and my personal life. Thankfully the husband wrapped most of our Xmas gifts yesterday while I was grocery shopping so at least I have one less thing to do!
See you at lunch – and it’s a good one!!

Hey Kath, just a quick question – I noticed that you seem to have been having toast with gym every morning lately before your workouts, whereas before you would vary between toast with PB, banana with PB, etc. Is there any reason for this? Personal preference – or do you find that one holds you over better than the other?
Thanks!

Hi! Hope you have a productive day and get all 1000 things done! 🙂

Thanks Nicole and Alicia!
Alex,
I think I strayed from PB on my morning toast when I started having PB in my oatmeal every morning and I have a banana with breakfast lots of mornings too. So toast with jam (gym!) just gives me a little more balance than PB + banana or toast with PB. But I don't really see a problem with having double PB or banana, I just try to keep things the same so I don't have to think about it at 5 a.m.!
My toast holds me over well during my workout. Occasionally I'll have something different and will be hungry mid-way through, so I've just found something that works with my body and is light on the stomach.
HTH!

Hi,
I just wanted to comment in regards to your post after your Christmas meal this past weekend – I don't think it's a very good (or healthy) idea to say things like "I fell off the wagon tonight." That phrase is one that is associated with addictions – one that an addict would use if they suffered a relapse. I have been reading this blog for a while now and believe that you DO have a healthy relationship with food, and don't consider yourself an "addict" in any way…right? Your blog is very well done and I find your food choices and cooking habits very inspirational. Just wanted to put in my 2 cents on that one topic 🙂

Hi Kath! I just wanted to tell you how much I laughed after I read your annoucement…..you and I are doing the exact same thing! I am currently working full time in Sales/Marketing and took a class this passed semester (anatamy and physiology-which I loved…you will too) to see if going back to my RD and MS was for me and have decided to go for it. I am still worknig full time for now as I have a bunch of pre-reqs to complete first. Just like you, I went to a small liberal arts school and graduated and a psych major so I have nothing needed. All the science courses and hard but fun! I graduated college in 2001 so it's nice to go back to school now and really apprecaite it! Congrats on your decision to go back…..I know how it feels…..scary and SO exciting all rolled into one emotion! Good luck and I can't wait to tune in everyday to read your blog which I love!! -Cat

By the way, I tried your oatmeal pancake this weekend and loved it! Do you have any recommendations for making the oats a little less chewy or is that how they are? Thanks again!!

Hi Kath,
I totally admire your attitude about the days you eat more than usual … it's so refreshing! I really want to lose a significant amount of weight (about 30 pounds, maybe a little more) and it just seems so daunting! Any advice on how to start and get my head in the right mindset? Thank you! Love the blog!

hey kath!
i had a quick question. in the past i have had problems with restrictive eating and losing ALOT of weight. now that i am trying to just maintain my weight, im scared that if i add in extra calories my weight will soar! i KNO i need more calories because i work out just the same amount as you do, but i def dont eat more than 1200 calories (gross…not net) a day… which is horrible, i kno! im just scared that i've slowed my metabolism down SOOOO much that increasing my calories will make me pack on the weight… any advice? id love to hear ur thoughts on this…
thanx for the great blog! its really inspirational =)

Ha, I didn't even notice that I typed "toast with gym." But if you think toast with JAM is good… 😉

Cathy,
Too bad we're not going to the same school! We could study together 🙂 As for the pancake, did you use quick oats? The old fashioned ones might be a little chewier. I like chewy things though, so maybe I just don't notice and that's just how they are?
Lauren,
Read my tips on the Real Weight Loss page. To get in the right mindset, I highly recommend SuperFoods HealthStyle or Eating Well For Optimum Health – both really have impacted the way I view food (fuel!). The more I learn about nutrition the healthier I want to be, so I think reading and learning is the best way to get motivated.
Restrictive,
1200 calories is very, very low. Please read my post titled "Advice." I think it would be wise for you to see an R.D. in your area so you can get a good idea of where you need to be.

Cate,
I am sorry if I offended you with the wagon comment. I had always assumed it meant "strayed from your usual habits," but perhaps I mis-spoke. I didn't realize it had such a close association with addiction. Thanks for the compliments on the blog 🙂
