Back in my nutrition school days, I recorded a food dairy and calculated all of the vitamins and minerals I was getting from real food. While I got plenty of a few of them (like vitamin A), I was definitely lacking in others even of the average of a few days. It was a really neat experiment. It’s best to get nutrition from real food, but you have to pay close attention to diversity and variety of foods to get everything checked off. Therefore, I do believe in taking a multivitamin to cover your bases and ensure you’re getting all of what you need.
Olly is a collection of simplistic and personalized vitamins and supplements for adults and kids. They are made without artificial ingredients and get colors and flavors from plants.
Women’s Multi for me. Kids Multi and Probiotic for Mazen. Remember the days of chalky, crunchy chewable vitamins that stuck in your teeth? Gross!
I also bought the Prenatal to try out. I love that it has some fish oil included plus 800mcg of folic acid. The prenatal citrus is my favorite flavor!
Mazen loves them a little too much and sometimes gets mad when I only give him one. He calls them “the gummies from Target!”
I try to explain that it’s medicine that tastes good not candy and he is starting to figure that out.
Olly also has specialty supplements for different needs – probiotics, sleep, omega-3, vitamin D3. They are all formulated so you can mix and match and not worry about overdosing on certain nutrients. Caitlin is testing out Olly as well and told me that the sleep supplement worked wonders – I want to try that one next!
I think this combo describes my needs best : )
You can find Olly at Target now, and in celebration of this launch they are running a sweepstakes for a Day Spa package for a lucky winner and a friend, a 6 months supply of Olly Vitamins, and a personal wellness consultation with Olly‘s resident nutritionist! 100 runner ups will receive an Olly product of their choosing, so enter away!

I have been seeing these at Target, I will have to try them out! I just ran out of my multi the other day!

I’ve been a lil lax with my supplement taking. These sound really good. I like the “wellness boost” ones. Seeing as how a crap ton of people won the last sweepstakes I opted out of, I’m going to enter this one. LOL
Linda @ The Fitty says
I ought to take a multi, I don’t take one!
Kate says
I’ve tracked out of curiosity before and I am usually falling short in potassium, calcium, and iron. I take a probiotic, but this a good reminder that multi’s are a good fallback.

Prenatal?

I always said I want two kids! Not pregnant though.

Funny — I just got some grief from our pediatrician yesterday for not giving our 3 year a vitamin *with iron*. Gummi vitamins sure are popular with the kiddos, but I’ve found that the dry and chalky chewables are the only ones for kids that provide iron. (I think it has to do with chemistry of iron and the formulation of gummi vs. dry chewables, as well as the fact that iron is toxic in high doses so putting it in gummi vitamin “candies” might be risky.)
Anyhow, do you know whether Olly offers a vitamin with iron for kids? We offered our 3 year old a Flinstone’s yesterday and he chewed it up and spat it out. The liquid iron drops for infants/toddlers taste horrible, too.
KathEats says
I don’t think they have an iron one but I bet they will come out with one. we haven’t been to our three year appointment yet, but I wonder if our pediatrician will bring up the same thing. Mazen’s iron has always been within normal limits.
Christine says
Wow – you’ve had his iron levels checked multiple times since he was born?? It requires a venous blood draw to measure iron levels. Our pediatrician (who is probably more concerned about iron than the average pediatrician) offered to order the test for us, but I said “no thanks” because I didn’t want to deal with an extra needle poke. You must be braver than me. 🙂
KathEats says
He had the finger stick at one year and didn’t need anything further.
Mandy Pierce says
I went looking for one with Iron, and all I could find was the Flintstones brand plus iron. I actually ended up getting the same Olly vit that Mazen has above for my 2 year old, and I am still trying to figure out how to get him the iron supplement he needs (Olly didn’t have one with iron).
jen says
Funny how different all the docs are. My kid’s pedi says no vitamins at all. It seems like it would be nice if they could all get on the same page about some basic things!
Olly says
Hi Christine,
Thanks for your interest in Olly! We do not currently offer any iron-containing products. While iron is an important nutrient for health, particularly in women of childbearing age, consumption of excess iron is problematic. In low doses over extended periods of time, it may promote oxidative damage, and in high doses acutely, it can cause serious harm, particularly in children. Hence, supplementation with iron should be reserved for individuals with a known iron deficiency or at high risk for one. Moreover, iron has a very strong taste which can be difficult to mask in a gummy. Given these safety concerns and challenges, we have formulated our gummies without iron. We hope this helps answer your question! If you want to learn more, feel free to check out our website (www.olly.com) or shoot us an email at [email protected].

I loved getting my Flintstones vitamin as a kid. I remember thinking how grown up I was for taking a vitamin just like my dad.

Do you know what the source of gelatin is (fish, pork, or beef)?
KathEats says
I don’t know… Maybe try emailing customer service?
OLLY says
Hi Dina,
Thanks for your interest in OLLY! We use both porcine and bovine gelatin in the manufacture of our gummies and softgels. Our Probiotic, Digestion and Kids Multi along with our softgels are made with bovine gelatin. The rest of our line is made with porcine gelatin. If you want to learn more about us, visit www.olly.com or shoot us an email at [email protected] and we would be happy to answer any other questions you might have.
Thanks!
Tyler Smith says
Why not make the whole line with beef gelatin? My wife just bought the prenatal gummies, and is sad that she’ll have to return them because we can’t eat pork.
Dani @ DaniCaliforniaCooks says
I love gummy vitamins! I take one for calcium and consider it my afternoon treat 🙂
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
haha, I would totally want to eat them like candy like Mazen does!!

can you direct me to or share with me about the kids probiotics? My understanding was they need to be refrigerated to retain the live bacteria.
KathEats says
That’s a good question, and I’m not sure quite sure of the answer. But I did some preliminary searching and it seems that some probiotics are designed to be active at room temp – “suspended” as this article describes it with a good simple understanding.
Mollie says
at this point, there’s been limited research/clinical evidence around probiotics generally: https://nccih.nih.gov/health/probiotics/introduction.htm#status
OLLY says
Hi Stephanie!
That is a great question, so glad you asked! Our Kids’ Multi + Probiotic contains a unique type of live probiotic called Bacillus coagulans. Unlike most probiotics, Bacillus coagulans is resistant to heat-stress, a result of the strong outer coating naturally produced by the bacteria. This unique feature makes Bacillus coagulans both shelf-stable (no refrigeration required) and capable of surviving passage through the stomach so it can be active in the lower digestive tract. Hope this helps answer your question! If you want to learn more about OLLY, check out our website at www.olly.com or shoot us an email to [email protected].
Thanks!

During your pregnancy you mentioned that you didn’t take the full dose of your prenatals because you believed you were receiving adequate vitamins and minerals from eating real food. Can you speak to what has changed about your diet to make you feel that you now need additional supplementation to get balanced nutrition? I eat a real food diet as well and am wondering if I should be taking a multi now.
KathEats says
My dose was 3 a day and I took 2 a day – because that should have given me about 70% of everything and I was getting 30% from food. Most days I still only have one gummi when the dose is two : ) It’s kind of a meet in the middle approach between real food and supplements.

I read this post this morning, and when I was running errands at Target this afternoon I saw a huge display for these vitamins. I bought the women’s multi – thanks for the recommendation!

I keep seeing these at Target & the attractive packaging always has me wanting to buy. Ha. I’ll have to try them now that I’ve seen an actual review.

I’ve been contemplating starting my kids on multivitamins. I know they would eat them. I don’t want to toot my own horn but they eat pretty healthily, a nice mix of all different foods. I wonder if it’s really necesarry at such a young age? What are you thoughts…If they eat healthy foods should they also need vitamins?
KathEats says
The packaging says 2 and up but I’d check with your ped:)

I just had to go out and buy the woman’s multi berry ones after this post 🙂
I am really interested in the Vitamin D and the sleep ones…but I think I need to figure out if I can take those while still breastfeeding.
