I could not sleep last night 🙁 Tossed and turned and this annoying cricket kept chirping at regular intervals.
I blame the intense exercise so late in the day. We’ll have to see how that goes next week.
I finally dosed off and woke up at 4AM when Matt left with intense hunger. At first I put in ear plugs and attempted to fall back asleep, but 5 minutes later I was up and heading to the kitchen. Hunger can be confusing at times, but sometimes you know without a doubt that you just need to eat. The only thing I ever want in the middle of the night is cereal with milk so I had some Erewhon Raisin Bran and Nature’s Path Granola in soy milk. And sleepily took a photo of it just for you 🙂 Add about 50% more to this bowl – I had seconds.
I felt MUCH better upon returning to my bed. I guess that soccer was even more intense than I realized! And what’s amazing is that the cereal not only instantly helped my stomach, but my limbs felt better when I got back in bed too. Guess every inch of me needed a little more fuel.
4 hours later…. hungry again!! I let myself sleep in and woke up at 8.
I debated doing yoga first (I am rather stiff today) or going for walk, but I knew I wanted breakfast for energizing purposes.
- 1/3 cup Pineapple Chobani (my last! Hope I can find more!)
- ~1/2 cup Kashi GoLean Crunch
- 1 chopped peach
- 1 tbsp coconut
- 1/2 tbsp flax
- Dollop Barney Butter for fun
Despite been tired today, coffee was not appealing at all. I think because I am thirsty too. So I went with Coconut Chai Tea

Good for you for listening to your hunger at night! I’m pretty certain I would have laid in bed, agonizing over whether to eat something, and wouldn’t have been able to fall back asleep. Hunger can be confusing, you are right!

It’s so frustrating when you can’t fall asleep!! Sounds like you really needed the fuel and wouldn’t have been able to go back to sleep without it – that’s good that you listened to your body. I’ve never actually woken up in the middle of the night hungry…but I do wake up very hungry quite often 🙂
Daria (Summer of the CSAs) says
Glad the food helped! And coconut chai tea sounds amazing!

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) says
When you wake up hungry in the middle of the night, you know your body needs fuel (vs emotional eating). I’ve been hungrier than usual lately – I think it’s because I’m finally running again!

Hi Kath,
Any tips for getting less fiber? / Healthy food options that deliver less fiber?
I track my cals and fiber on sparkpeople, and even on days when I think I’m cutting back on fiber, I end up with 40-50 grams, minimum. All of the foods I love seem to feature fiber (and they’re not the highly processed ‘franken-food’ varieties), and I’m not sure what healthy alternatives I should try (it’s starting to really mess with my digestion).
Also, I know this question may be better suited for a consultation and understand if it’s not possible to answer it with that limited background info.
Thanks!
A

I love those gypsy teas…
for me the best part was taht they’re easy to toss into a purse for work/school (not have to worry about a box getting crushed or putting a few tea bags in a ziplock..)
Cait (Cait's Plate) says
I tossed and turned all night last night too! So did my co-worker! What’s going on?!?!
I always eat cereal when I can’t sleep – it’s seriously the perfect cure 🙂

LOL I nominated you for some of these. That would be cool if someone thought of my blog bahaha. Your breakfast looks yummy- I love adding in shredded coconut. And that tea sounds awesome.. that brand makes really great flavors.

I love how you add coconut to your oats! What a savory treat! Also, I bet you’ll win big on the awards! 🙂

I find it really hard to sleep if I exercise late… I either wake up hungry/thirsty or eating/drinking enough to refuel properly before bed and being to full to sleep! Take time to figure out a food schedule when working out changes.
Enjoy your Wednesday!

yay Gypsy Tea — so amazingly delish! Complimented those coconut oats too, I am sure!

Congrats on the Awards! 🙂
Also, I know what you mean about not being able to sleep because of hunger…being dehydrated has kept me up at night, so I wonder if that might have been part of the issue…?

Hunger is my #1 reason for not being able to sleep. That or it’s too hot. It’s no surprise after your vigorous soccer match that your body was HUNGRY! You earned those calories, for sure. 🙂
I LOVE Chobani pineapple yogurt!! I just tried it yesterday, OMG! SOoo good. Like dessert.
Foodbuzz blogger awards sounds awesome! What a good idea.

Food Maniac says
You made a healthier choice than I did last night at midnight, I didn’t feel like making anything so I dove into the ice cream bin.
angieinatlanta says
I’m the same way with intense hunger – what do I want? What do I want? I tend to walk around my kitchen taking random nibbles.
That’s why I’m obsessed with never getting THAT hungry!
Niki says
Soccer always makes me ravenous too! I just started back playing about a year ago on a coed team after taking like 5 years off after high school! It was so great to be back but boy is it a tough workout when you’re not used to it! Unfortunately, due to grad school, I had to take the fall off but hopefully will be back in the spring!
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
awww, not being able to sleep like that is such a pain!! i’m sure that means you’ll sleep like a baby tonight though! hopefully once you get used to the soccer sched you won’t have that problem again :O)
Susan says
Ooh, coconut and chai sound like a good combo! Good for you on listening to your body 🙂 Sometimes I don’t always “refuel” properly right after activity because I’m just not hungry, then it suddenly catches up with me and I’m starving! Never a good idea to deny that, no matter what hour 😉
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Sorry to hear that you didn’t have the best night’s sleep. Hope your day goes much better!!! 🙂
Paige says
I’m glad you were able to get back to sleep after some food:) I’m so excited to vote for the FoodBuzz awards!
Kath says
A,
My first question was going to be are you eating things like All Bran or Fiber One or Flat Out wraps. Cut those out immediately if so. But if you’re eating all whole foods, I’d just say cut back a little on the veggies and higher fiber ones until your system feels good again. 45 grams is an OK amount, but if it’s bothering you you should cut back.
Katie,
World Market.
amanda,
A little half and half.

Pam (Highway to Health) says
It’s amazing what a little fuel can do for your body! Hopefully you will get a better night’s sleep tonight!
JBlue says
I have to ask a question…I don’t understand the hype about Barney Butter?! We just moved and our new grocery stocks it, so I was so excited to finally try it after seeing it on all the blogs. But to me it tastes more artificial than, say, TJ’s Almond Butter, and also, it contains palm oil, which I thought was bad for you. Am I missing something? And what about palm oil? Is it actually okay for you? I got the crunchy, so maybe I need to try the creamy…
Tay says
I hate when intense exercise interrupts sleep! You’d think that it would exhaust you so much so you COULD sleep!!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
coconut chai tea sounds delish…i’m a sucker for coconut anything.
Kath says
JBlue,
I didn’t know what the hype was about when I first tried it either. But I fell in love when I finished my first jar. Once it’s gone, you’ll want it back. It’s the roasted flavor that is so unique. There is nothing unhealthy about palm oil. Raw nut butter would be better, but palm oil is not bad for you. The crunchy is my favorite.
Kath
Adriane says
I had a horrible nights sleep too! I finally gave up after being awake for a few hours (4:30 – 6:30) and headed to the gym. I regret it now because I am cranky and exhausted! Hope you don’t experience the same thing next week!
maria says
I, too, did not sleep well this morning. And then, when I went back to bed after J left I had a terrible nightmare! OH NO! Hopefully tonight will go better!
