Hello from Mom + Dad!
They’re here for a mini vacation and are spending 3 nights at our place. Matt and I finished up business at the bakery, including a duo of snacks:
Siggi’s + Cville Cluster (I might have added a corner of Blondie too!)
And a few hours later…an end piece of bread to tide me to dinner
While we worked, mom and dad were downtown listening to music in the heat. We met them at 7 and headed to Escafe for dinner
And drinks!
I was in a thirsty mood for water, so mom and I split a beer. Starr Hill Amber!
My snacks filled me up so I had a salad for dinner..
But it wasn’t any ole salad – I ordered a side of calamari to go on top! I love salads topped with fried food.
Half of them went on top and half went to share with the table
It’s just wrong to not have ice cream on a 100 degree day!! We stopped into Splendora’s for gelato. Matt and I shared the Lavender + Lemon and COCONUT! It was incredible!!!!!!!
We’re all gathered in the living room yapping away!
Night!
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance says
Salad topped with calamari sounds like a great idea! 😀 Crab rangoons should be next 😉
Baking N Books says
I’ve only had Calamari once but so good! Agreed – salads topped with crunchy things, fried or not, is good 🙂
Nice to have your family visiting! Is this their first time at the Bakery?

Tara @ the pleased plate says
You are amazing at how much you blog and document! I love reading and have learned many things from you, but do you feel like it gets to be too hard to keep up with at times?
KathEats says
On occasion, but it’s worth it!
SillySavage says
Hi Kath: Totally off topic for this post but I wanted to make sure you and Matt knew about a show on BBC America. It’s called, “James May Drinks.” The show is about James (from Top Gear) as he travels around England drinking beer. My husband was telling me about it and I thought of you two. Cheers!
KathEats says
Oh that sounds really cool – I didn’t know about it!
Patricia says
James May also had two previous shows documenting his “education” about wines – he traveled throughout France in the first one, and California in the second. They were both hilarious *and* educational! (sidenote: how do I get a job like that? Paid to travel around Sonoma and Napa, tasting wonderful wines and touring fantastic vineyards – sign me up!!) BBC America rules as far as I’m concerned. 🙂
Paige @Running Around Normal says
I was just saying how yummy calamari is in yesterday’s post:) Looks good!

I used to loooove calamari in my pre-veg days! Oh gosh, now I have a craving 🙂
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
That’s brilliant! Fried calamari atop salad… I never would have thought about that! That sounds so good. I love squid (boiled) with EVOO, vinegar, fresh parsley, salt + pepper. That I have had on a salad, it’s delish. Try it sometime! 🙂
Hannah says
I’ll have to remember your trick of creating your own salad at a restaurant in future! And what gloriously crispy squid. I’ve had very sad, soggy ones lately 🙁
Emma @ Micrososm of Life says
Yay! Time with family is the best summer activity, in my opinion. That, and eating ice cream.
doniree says
I want that “food person” shirt! Where, oh where, is that from?! 🙂
KathEats says
I got it for free at a blog conference by the Cookingchannel.com

Fried food on top of a salad: what a perfectly *balanced* combo. Seriously, though, fried chicken salad *was* my go-to restaurant food back in junior high and high school, so I hear ya. 🙂
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
I love how you ordered the fried calamari to top your salad. What a fun idea. 😀
And YES to the gelato! I can’t imagine enduring such a hot day without something like icecream or frozen yogurt or gelato to cool down with at the end. 😀
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’m not a big calamari fan, but that gelato sure looks good. Have fun with your parents!

YOU like fried food on a salad?!?! Awesome! Don’t we all? It may sound silly, but it is so refreshing to hear you say that!!!
kyla says
Lavender gelato…mmm. That sounds interesting! I bet it was delicious. It’s sweltering hot over here in St.Louis. I checked the weather forecast at 10 am and it said it was already 91 degrees outside but felt like 101. Jeesh!
rumfunandsun says
I have been drinking so much water lately too! I actually drank a gallon of water yesterday!
Amy says
I totally heart you for loving fried foods on top of salads. I LOVE them too but I always feel a little guilty about it. GREAT to see a healthy living blogger such as yourself loving it too! 🙂
