We are home!!! It’s been such an exciting day. I loved being in the hospital – the nurses were so helpful and the accommodations excellent. However, now that we’re home, I am SO glad to be here!! I was able to get in a 40 minute nap this afternoon in my own comfortable bed while the grandparents oogled over the baby.
While Mazen has been nursing and napping, Matt has been putting together this beautiful video of our first weekend together. Enjoy!
I hope the video doesn’t crash because it’s long!!
I’m off to enjoy a little glass of wine : )
PS. I have TONS of photos, hospital meals and more to share, but I’ve been busy. See you tomorrow!

He is such an adorable little baby! Seems quite content for the most part too…..I love how he quieted down after dad started shushing in his ear. I wish that worked for all babies! I can’t wait to see your adventure continue and see your beautiful baby grow! Congratulations!
SaraG. says
Oh Kath! You and Matt must be so proud!!! He’s so precious! Welcome home and enjoy this new journey! (and the Pumking…gosh I miss that one!) Grrrrrrrreat video!
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
Aww, look how LITTLE! I love how his baby shirt sleeves are all long and floppy. Matt is the baby whisperer with that “shhh” in his ear! I wish I would’ve known about that when I was helping take care of my triplet nieces and nephews!!
Janelle says
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
Cristen says
Well, that got me choked up! Kath, you looked absolutely happy, content and peaceful at the end of that video. Congratulations again on Mazen!
Lauren @ Healthy Food For Living says
LOVED this video! So glad you posted it =).
The shushing right up against Mazen’s ear was unbelievable… was that tip from Happiest Baby on the Block or the No Cry Sleep Solution (or another book/source)? Both books are sitting on my bedside table, but I have yet to crack open either as I’m currently reading about 5 pregnancy books ;). With 4 months to go, I guess I should start reading about what happens after labor & birth!
I also love that you cracked open a Pumking! My hubs just bought a couple to save for after the big day… I’d take a glass of the king of pumpkin beers over a glass of champagne any day – especially after not having had any alcohol for nearly a year =).
KathEats says
Happiest Baby on the Block…. It’s amazing!
marie says
it IS amazing!! My husband and I have followed all of the 5S’s from the Happiest Baby on the Block and I swear by that book!! I would recommend it to every expecting couple! My little girl is 4.5months and has been sleeping through the night since she was about 2months old (6pm bedtime, dream feed around 9-10pm, sleeps through until 6-7am).
We are new parents, so that book was our “bible” – we continually re-read and referred back to it during the first few months; we had both read it beforehand and watched hte online videos w Dr Karp, but once you have your baby, you pick up even more from re-reading sections of the book.
I’m glad things are going so well Kath!! Mazen is a doll. 🙂
Vicky (Little Baby, Big City) says
Amazing! He is so cute, I forgot how small newborns are! Matt and you look like naturals! Excellent swaddling btw! Enjoy every second and rest while you can.
And breastfeeding is awesome! I love bonding with my seven month old that way!
Brie says

Priscilla says

Holy COW, it’s Matt the baby whisperer. That was incredible! And I love the shot of him laying down on the blanket with his little feet kicking in and out… so sweet. You guys look so excited and a-“mazed” with your sweet new baby – sorry, couldn’t help myself 😉
Laura @ She Eats Well says

I have been a blog reader for a couple of years now and have really enjoyed sharing your journey from entrepreneurs to now brand new parents! Your accomplishments have been extraordinary! I wish you all the very best!
Mom says
Thank you!
Kinley @ Better off Barefoot says
Aww, this video was adorable! And that shhhhing?!?! Miracle!! How does that work like magic? So cool!
Candace says
I think the sweetest part of this video is how proud your dad looks holding him, Kath. He just looks so thrilled to be a grandfather.
Lauren says
LOVE when Matt is using HBOTB techniques! I found them so helpful. Also – so jealous of
Pumking! I live in Rhode Island and it’s not here yet 🙁 Enjoy being at home with Maze!
Nicole says
LOVE the KERF onsesie with the bear hat, he’s adorable and you are absolutely glowing!
Lacey says
Congratulations to the Younger-Monson 3!! Thanks so much for sharing this sweet video–I teared up watching it. Mazen is so sweet! Enjoy this exciting and special time.
Michaela says
aaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwww, you just want to hold and kiss him!!!!!!!!
Such a cutie pie, he looks soooooo sleepy and just absolutely adorable.
Makes me want to have a baby asap 😉
Hope you are all doing great, and Kath, I must say I am so impressed you are blogging!
Whitney says
That video was precious! Thank you for sharing! And I think your dad is a wise man for letting Mazen decide what to call him! We called my mom’s dad Peepaw, too. I’m not convinced I want my kids to call my dad that, but we will just have to see.
ALSO! I don’t remember when, but at one point you had a little convo going about craft beers and you made the comment to avoid cans – but there are actually canned craft beers! My husband is a beer snob and has wizened me up. Oskar Blues (http://www.oskarblues.com) out of Colorado set the trend off by canning their beers because cans are lighter than bottles for backpacking. Husband is from Colorado, so this is of particular interest to him 😉 He is a red ale fanatic and particularly enjoys their G’Knight, I believe. But he gives mad props to the rest of their line. You should try them out!
Philippa says
Whitney, Oskar Blues is awesome!! I went there when visiting Colorado a few years ago – I still think about the beer. And the catfish! Do they still have the technicolour bus out the front, that looks like it’s out of the Muppet Movie? 😉
kim@hungryhealthygirl says
Very sweet video! Enjoy being at home with your precious little boy!
Cat says
LOVED the video! Well done Matt! Ya’ll have such a precious little boy! I cried- I am a softy! Enjoy your first night at home together. 🙂

j3nn says
Glad to hear the whole family is home!! 😀 Enjoy your new member.
Rachel says
awww this was the cutest video I’ve ever seen! He’s adorable… you all are such a sweet family 🙂
jessica says
So sweet & so beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing, I got all teary! That is some awesome swaddling too!
Micky says
Awww, he is so cute, thank you for sharing that with us! You all look so happy. Now, I know nothing about babies – I’ve never been around any and I’ve never had any so this is a legitimate question. That shhhhh thing that Matt was doing in his ear seemed like it would be kind of loud for a baby and it made me a little nervous watching it. Are you sure that’s ok to be doing right in his ear? I’m sure you know what you are doing and I’m not being critical, it just made me nervous but then again I am a nervous nelly! 🙂
KathEats says
Yup! Totally fine.
Sarah says
The “shhh” thing is actually recommended for soothing newborns. (I think Kath has mentioned Happiest Baby on the Block – that’s one book that recommends it.) It turns out that life in the womb is not silent at all – they hear all kinds of noises from the mother’s body like her heartbeat, blood pumping through her body, etc. – so they’re accustomed to a kind of “whooshing” noise and tend to find it soothing.
Chris Sy says
Yeah, I wondered the same thing. I had my husband shush in my ear like that to see what it was like. I don’t know…Love him and hold him close to your heart and face. He’s so beautiful. And wow, your husband’s hairy! Haha.
Jenn says
I actually saw this on Dr Oz this past week. The Shhh thing mimics the white noise the baby hears in utero.
Ashley says
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, but I think Maze would protest if he was not into it. 🙂 Also, I as well do not know anything about this to intelligently comment and he seemed to love it – hmmmm, maybe THIS is the solution I have been looking for when I can’t sleep… making my boyfriend “shhh!” in my ear 😛
Shannon Bell says
oh my goodness so sweet!! that last little frame of you two in his room is precious, you can tell how happy you are!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Enjoy that wine.. first glass in a long time.. I am sure it will taste good!
Danica @ It's Progression says
so incredibly precious!
Hillary says
Made me cry! So sweet!
Jess @ JessieBear What Will You Wear says
he’s just so presh!
Carla says
Just so I don’t forget to tell you about this, the swaddle that saved us! It’s miracle blanket-esque with an Aden and anais. We used it for so long! http://www.runawaypancake.com/home/katheats/public_html/wp-content/plugins/iimage-gallery.php?idpost=305&idg=1&idi=9
kelly says
congratulations!!! Oh my goodness he is adorable. I love the little bear hat! Where did you get it? And are those boy Aden and Anais swaddle blankets? I adore them.
I am SO happy all went well! It is quite strange not having your blogs pop up on my Google reader all the time. But I totally realize WHY…and I don’t mind!
Last time I gave birth at the old MJH, so your pics and video made me REALLY excited to head up the hill this time. Due in 2.5 months. And YES! Love Happiest Baby on the Block. I’ll have to relearn that swaddle…I remember it took a while to get a hang of, but it was SO ESSENTIAL! People swear by all those fancy swaddlers and sacks, but I think the HBOTB swaddle method is all you need!
KathEats says
Hat is baby gap… And yes to blankets. I have a bunch of the swaddle sacks too!
Kelly says
And for Matt – husband wants to know how the sleeping situation is for dads at mjh.
KathEats says
It’s a couch that turns into a bed. Not the best, but not horrible either
donna says
Ah, loved seeing little Mazen yawn, and yes, Matt is the baby whisperer. You both look like such naturals. You look amazing, Kath, and that baby is just PERFECT!
Alison says
He is just so precious! <3 Melts my heart!
Fallon says
Awww what a great video. Thank you for sharing. Mazen is beautiful! Can’t wait to see how you blog about what it is like being a new mom and all your new experiences you will go through.
Kim says
Oh my. That video moved me to tears!
Mazen is absolutely gorgeous! You and Matt are just so lucky, and you look so so happy! As do the grandparents 🙂 hehehe…
Enjoy your precious little Mazen…
beth grossman says
beautiful ..all of you…wonderful times!!
Laura says
He’s gorgeous. And I’m SO impressed with Matt’s swaddle. It took me a good three weeks before I was able to wrap a swaddle that well!
Lauren says
Kath and Matt-he is just so precious! I couldn’t stop smiling while I was watching the video. And I can tell that you two will be wonderful parents. And of course, Charlottesville is a wonderful place to grow up. He has a wonderful life ahead of him!
Dione says
Thanks for the sweet video. I was smiling through the whole thing. And I was laughing in amazement at the shushing! I can’t believed how he quieted so easily.
Beth WA says
Lovely!! So happy for you guys!
Christena says
Sweet video! Thanks for sharing! He is so adorable and you are glowing. Loved seeing the grandparents interact with him — they are so obviously smitten — especially your dad!!! So precious. Karen also looks amazing, by the way! She seems like such an awesome mother-in-law/friend!
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
Thanks for sharing! Soak it all up Mama and love on every bit of that little baby.
And YES! Happiest Baby on the Block is the best book ever. Total life saver that works!
Leslie says
Thank you for sharing that. Loved every second! I want to hear more about the shushing-looks like it really works. My husband still prides himself on his abilities to swaddle or “burrito wrap” our kids (they are now teenagers) but I never heard of the shushing. (By the way, if you ever get the chance, watch the episode of New Adventures of Old Christine where they swaddle a bunch of adults and they immediately go to sleep-hilarious!) Enjoy being home with your sweet little family!
KathEats says
It’s from Happiest Baby on the Block… Great book
Nicole (MyLoveForCooking) says

Megan says

Nancy V says
Awww! I’m not a baby person, but I loved the video! I was doing well, until the final scene where you are holding him in his room, and your sweet smile to the camera as the scene fades.. Made me tear up!! Congratulations!!
Meg says
I had my first Pumking of the season last night. Sweet elixar of life! Cheers to you, Matt and baby Mazen from Richmond!
Megan says
And holy freakin’ cow!!! The Happiest baby on the block method worked!!!! AWESOME JOB!
Pam says
So adorable!! Love the bear hat 🙂
I have never seen shushing in the ear to stop the crying, but wow, it sure did the trick! Does it simulate the ambient noise they are used to in the whom?
Very happy for you, what an amazing journey for you and now the beginning of a new one!!
Cait's Plate says
LOVED the video!! He is just so so precious Kath!! You and Matt look like such happy parents 🙂
Simply Life says
soooooo sooooo sweet! I loved that video!
Amy says
Congratulations on such a beautiful and happy baby! I loved the video!
Laura L. says
I loved the video! I am currently 12 days past my due date and feeling bummed that we’ll likely have to get induced in the next day or two (I was looking forward to experiencing going into labor spontaneously, laboring at home as long as possible, etc.). Anyway, seeing little Mazen got me excited about the fact that no matter how labor begins, we get a tiny little baby boy to love and snuggle at the end! Many congratulations to your entire family!
Logan says
Good luck to you!
Kate says
Oh that was just wonderful! Thank you!
Katie J says

Very sweet. I bet he will love watching this when he is older.
Aimee says
Hi Kath,
I’ve never posted before but have read your blog for years now– it’s truly helped me to shed the 50 lbs I was carrying by tackling food in a natural sense. I have so enjoyed reading your posts over the years and lately was checking multiple times a day to see if you had given birth.
I had to post because, obviously I do not know you, but this video just brought tears to my eyes! Especially with Matt’s amazing “shusshing”!!! Nothing like a father’s touch!
May you and your family have many years of health and happiness! I look forward to following your journey from the great “up north” of Minnesota!
All my best,
Aimee
Emilie says
SO adorable Kath, congrats! That video is such a wonderful keepsake.

Caitlin Boyle (@CaitlinHTP) says
Nice boobies 🙂 MILK. hehe.
Eileen says
Maze is beautiful. Congratulations!!! Oh that swaddling/shusssshing technique brought back so many memories. I had a colicky little one that could not be calmed by anything. I remember one night literally shushing for an hour just out of desperation. (needless to say that wasn’t her thing) I found out that walking on a treadmill while she was in a carrier on my chest was one of the only things that appeased her. Nothing like endless walking on no sleep. The things you do as a new parent.
Enjoy this time they grow up so fast!!
Mara says
Swooning over the bear hat and the Pumpking.

Well now….this made my biological clock go off like a GONG! Such baby sweetness! I’ve never heard of the shushing trick before, it worked beautifully. And you’re right about Matt being excellent at swaddling! I think my favorite part of the entire video is when Mazen yawns….baby yawns and baby feet….two of my all time favorite things. *sigh*
Thank you for sharing your little world with us. I’m so happy for you both. 🙂
Alison says

Adorable video, adorable boy, adorable family. Matt already has the 5 S’s down pat! It took my hubby a while to make a perfect baby burrito. I called my husband over to show him the shooshing, brings back memories!

Thank you for sharing. It was beautiful. I have so enjoyed following along on your life’s journey the last couple of years as a reader.
Ingunn says
Adorable, seriously. Congratulations again on your beautiful little bundle of amazingness.
Laura says
A little list:
1) The bear hat and KERF onesie are the most adorable things ever.
2) Matt has some excellent swaddling and shushing skills. If there’s ever some kind of new-dad talent contest, he must enter! Or, at least, he should create a demo video for other new dads (such as my husband) to reference as necessary sometime in the next few years… 🙂
3) To chime in with many others, you look amazing for just giving birth! Not to mention, you make it look like second nature to soothe and burp a wee one 🙂
4) Enjoy your glass of wine! If there was ever a moment to celebrate, bringing home baby is certainly the proper occasion. Cheers to the Younger-Monson 3!
Alexandra says
The biggest of congratulations to you both! Mazen is beautiful.
Belinda says
I read your posts all of the time but hardly ever comment. This is my second comment since the birth of Mazen. I guess his baby cuteness has me commenting.
What a lovely video! Love your mom’s comment about Mazen being highly intelligent. Of course he is! Also, I’m in suspense now as to what Mazen will end up calling your dad. I think it is a cute idea. Again, congratulations! Babies are a gift from God. 🙂
Jen says

Ashley @ Hudson on the Potomac says

Hilary says
You look absolutely amazing! Not at all like you just gave birth. 🙂 Mazen is darn cute too!
Marcia says
Okay, he’s adorable. My own little guy was born on 7-7, so he’s two months now. They grow so fast!
Beer helps with milk supply you know, and almonds and oats. 🙂
Too funny, I was watching the video in the living room and my hubby came running out because he thought our Daniel was crying.
Lauren says
That was so beautiful! Makes me wish we took more videos! My daughter is six months old and like everyone says, it goes by so so fast. Way to capture those moments to look back on so fondly! Mazen is absolutely adorable. Also, that was so fun to watch you guys and hear everyone’s voices-in a non creepy way haha. Love the sweet southern accents!
Taylor says
Aww what a sweet baby 🙂 and you look fantastic by the way! First time moms usually look a little frazzled for a while, but you look so put together. Odd comment probably, but it’s just something I noticed in the video!
Alison says
You will cherish that video forever !
Katie says
Man, your video makes me teary! Our Shirley is 6 months old, but all of that feels like forever ago! And I am SUPER impressed that you already have Harvey Karp mastered! We didn’t get the DVD until Shirley was 2 months old, and if I would have known the magic, we would have been on our game like you two! Congrats, he is beautiful. You have know idea what you are in for, every day gets better and better. And he already looks like some of your best work!

What an amazing video! Thank you so much for sharing! And thank Matt for me that he didn’t put a song on top of it, I think it’s much more interesting to hear the conversations and baby noises instead 😉
I notice you haven’t mentioned any problems with breastfeeding, I hope that means it’s going well!! I know you were really looking forward to it. I had SUCH a hard hard time, and I wish I could have kept with it for longer.
Can’t wait to keep seeing your updates! Get rest and enjoy, hun! 🙂
KathEats says
Breastfeeding is going well, but I’m definitely realising how hard it can be. I’m lucky to have a good sucker, but my gosh it hurts!
Allison k says
Don’t worry…the pain goes away! I’ve said this like 9 or 10 times already, but if you haven’t met with an IBCLC yet, DO IT! Nursing was fine for us, but I wanted to double check just for peace of mind when he was about 9 days old. The LC gave me a few pointers and feelings went from “ok” to great. We were really blessed!
KathEats says
I definitely want to go to some le leche meetings… And maybe see another lc (saw several in the hospital and they were great)
Kim says
this is precious. so happy for your family – and little mazen is absolutely adorable!!!

Congrats Kath & Matt! Maze is one of the cutest newborn babies I’ve ever seen. I loved the shooshing and had no idea it replicated the sounds a baby hears in it’s mom’s tummy- so cool. Favorite part of the video is your expression at the end. You can see all the love and happiness in your face when you look at the camera.

Love the video! Matt is already such a sweet dad! Mazen’s so cute and both you and Matt are such natural parents. Congrats on your beautiful family 🙂

Sooo sweet! I loved the part where Matt changed his nappy, wrapped him and then settled him… Baby Boys love their Daddys (and their Mummy’s too of course!) Just wondering what the extra tag type part is on his umbilical cord clip? We dont have that extra part in Aus and I was just curious. 🙂

It was a security system alarm tag

The video didn’t even load 🙁 Maybe it will work on my phone? Jess swears by her LC. And the hurting should go away in a minute if the latch is right…do not keep him on if it doesn’t cause that means he slipped onto the nipple. We had a tongue thruster and consequently, cracked, sore nipples, and neosporin works wonders for that btw. And don’t be surprised when he loses weight coming home, perfectly normal. He is super adorable!!

Oh my goodness what a perfect video to be able to look back on your experience!! Matt doing “shhh” in Mazen’s ear brought back a flood of memories…it seems that all Dads have that “baby whisperer” quality built in 😉 Also, I am so glad that someone else’s parent is waiting for the baby to decide on their grandparent name…that is what my mom is doing also! This really was just too sweet…enjoy being a family at home 🙂
Caroline says
Oh my GAHD this is making me totally reconsider my lack of desire to have a child. This is beautiful.

Finally watched the video today, what a great memento! I’m sorry but I had to laugh when you told your mom not to let his arms out! Haha, I know we’ll be the same way when ours arrives in December. I’m sure our moms will think – you know we have done this before!!- but hopefully they just give a smile like your mom 🙂
And nobody asked me but I’m voting for GranBoomPa!

That video was absolutely beautiful. I just want to say to you and Matt – my dad did a lot of videotaping of me when I was a baby… a lot of it is similar to your video.. lots of video of just me, doing baby things, making baby noises, while he would just video tape and not talk a lot. Coming from someone who now has all of these videos… KEEP RECORDING! Watching videos like that from when I was a baby, with my older brother trying to play with me, seeing my mom and dad hold me, it just really means a lot and brings me to tears every time. Mazen will really appreciate you guys doing that for him! And of course, he will have millions of baby photos 😉
Christina @ The Beautiful Balance says

I finally got to watch this. I was fine until Peepaw made me cry! Not sure why, but he did.
I love baby noises too…so precious.
I only WISH I had the shushing tool 18 and 15 years ago! Absolutely incredible. I swear he almost smiled when Matt was doing that!
Congratulations again. Such a miracle!

Kath,
Could you clarify a few things? When is it safe to have a drink when you are breastfeeding? Do you have to wait until whatever amount – as little as it may be – gets out of your system?
I heard a recent study came out saying it was safe to have one drink WHILE you are pregnant… that sounds like a recipe for disaster to me! The government also approved the use of thalidomide for morning sickness without testing the consequences. :-/
Thanks!
KathEats says
multiple lactation consultants and our doctor have said it’s fine to have a drink or two. No mess to pump and dump and the milk is hardly affected. However, I recommend talking to your own team about your concerns and individual situation.
Heather C says

My daughter is only 6 months old…but I am SOOO ready for another. Thank you for sharing this, Mazen is precious! And it was amazing to watch him calm down after your husband swaddled him and shooshed in his ear. ENJOY!!! They just get cuter and cuter:).
