Crazy weekend in a row 4 of 5 begins: Larbs’ graduation.
My sister, Laura a.k.a. Larbs is graduating from Davidson on Sunday and we’ve got a full weekend of parties and family to attend. Tonight is a bash at a rock quarry (think dinner buffet and wine on every table – I better mentally prepare!). Tomorrow is the baccalaureate, another dinner (more low-key), and a party called “Beer Truck Party” because they bring in a truck filled with kegs. Then Sunday is graduation. My parents are coming down tonight and we’ll be making the 40-minute drive to Davidson along with my mother in law all 3 days. Whew!
Inverse workout day today. I walked the husband to the lightrail after breakfast this morning and plan to hit the gym for a light workout before lunch. Or perhaps a run if I’m in the mood.
I’m doing really well eating leftovers! With an open can of pumpkin from last night’s dinner in the fridge, you can guess what kind of oatmeal I had today
Contents:
- 1/3 cup oats
- 1/3 cup hemp milk
- 1/4 cup wheatberries
- 1/2 banana
- Vanilla + Salt
- About 1 cup pumpkin
- Nuts Over Raspberries Trail Mix
- Sprinkle brown sugar
In another family bowl:
With cafe. Pumpkin oatmeal is always super filling.
We’ve got clouds covering the sky now, but I can tell the sun is trying really hard to come out. The forecast says it will – crossing my fingers it’s sooner rather than later!
Allison says
Did you not add water to the oatmeal this time? Because of all the pumpkin?
Kath says
Allison ,
Sorry, yes, 1/3 cup of water too. I just left that out because it’s neutral. I cooked the oats as usual with half water, half milk and then stirred in the pumpkin when they were almost done.

That could be the prettiest bowl of oats I have ever seen.

Awesome – sounds like a great weekend ahead of you. Have fun!!
Ally says
Those oats look fantastic! I love pumpkin in my oats, I almost had pumpkin oats this morning but since i’m going out of town I had to use up the last bit of banana!
Tell your sister congratulations!

Lovely oatmeal! Still haven’t tried pumpkin oatmeal yet- I’m just too attached to the banana/pb combo right now, I guess.
Congrats to your sis. Have fun at graduation!

What do people here think about the rising cost of food and the devastating effect that it’s having on people in developing countries who spend a large percentage of their income on food?
My husband are thinking (haven’t done anything yet!) of being extra tight on our food budget with the goal of donating our surplus food money to a food relief agency.
Any other ideas?
JennC says
wish i could donate money to organizations but the food cost alone is causing us troubles…. i want to eat good but its hard
BethT says
Congrats to your sis Kath! Did she ever decide on a grad school? I work in higher ed and one of the programs I market is school counseling psychology, so I’m curious :p Have fun with her!
DaisyMay says
claire I would suggest donating the money you have as extra to a local food shelter. I mean purchasing items that they need and bringing them over to that. this way you know exactly where your money is going and know that you are feeding the less fortunate.
Hallie says
Off topic, but I’m new to the whole early-morning exercise thing and I’m having trouble finding a good pre-workout snack that I can digest quickly and will fuel my workout. I don’t have an hour to wait in the morning so I need something I can eat about 20 minutes before I work out and be ok. Half a banana wasn’t enough, banana with almond butter upset my stomach, and today I had half a clif bar which bothered me when I started exersising but then felt better.
Any tips? I want something light because I’m trying to lose a few pounds and I don’t want to eat a smaller breakfast when I get home!
SarahF says
Hallie-what about fruit with a bit of yogurt? I don’t work out in the morning but I work out after work, and right before I leave I have about a cup of fruit with about 1/3 cup yogurt. It fuels me great! But my stomach can pretty much handle anything so I’m not sure if it’ll work if you’re more sensitive
BethT says
Hallie, in my opinion you can’t go wrong with a small portion of carb and either jam or PB. So, half an english muffin, a slice of bread or a toaster waffle with a little spread on top. Perfect for me!
Tracy says
Hallie- Having a banana right before I run sometimes bothers my stomach, too. So, instead of a banana and almond butter, what about a slice of light wheat bread with almond butter?
Danielle says
Enjoy the graduation festivities Kath! I absolutely adore your blog so I added it to my new blogroll. Hope you don’t mind! 🙂
Jen says
just had a 2500 calorie eating binge this morning around/for breakfast
that’s as much as im supposed to have for my whole day…what should i do? continue eating my other meals like normal and try to get a workout in later tonight? cut back on other meals??
i over-ate the past two days too
DaisyMay says
I would say you should definitely go to the gym and also drink lots of water. I am not sure about the other meals. See how your body feels. if you already consumed that many calories it might stay fuller longer so you may not need to eat all scheduled meals just because you are used to doing so
Nicole says
Hi, Jen! I agree with DaisyMay, but I’d like to add that you should take a little time to really evaluate WHY you’ve binged and have overeaten the last few days if you feel there’s potential danger associated with your recent behaviors. When I get thrown off like that, I do different things to get back on track mentally first (then physically)…sooo….go for an extra long walk. or do some yoga? ….kinda kills two birds with one stone.
Lauren says
I just got intuitive eating and fit from within today! i am really excited to start reading them and hoping they will both help me to become better with my eating, indulging, and to not over-indulge just because i can and its there like i have been doing!
Becca says
Sounds like a great weekend! I’m jealous! I’ll be working 🙁
JennC says
Jen- this is called an eating disorder. you need to seek help.
Kath says
BethT ,
She’s going to Northeastern, unless Tufts calls that she got in off the waiting list. Then she doesn’t know what she’ll do!
Hallie,
I second toast with PB – I have it all the time (as you see…) and think it’s light enough to not hurt my stomach to eat right before but the nut butter carries me through.
Danielle ,
Thanks! I’m flattered 🙂
Jen,
I second Daisy and Nicole’s responses. And I agree you should think about why this happened. Do you have access to a counselor? Most of us binge every now and then, but if it’s something that has become regular for you, I would agree that help would only help.
Kath

Nice, so your sister will most likely be in the Boston area!! Do you plan on visiting her?? There are LOADS of great restaurants up here!
Sidi says
Looks like the party is going great. I’ll read you tomorrow. 😉
