I had planned on going for a WALK this morning. I try not to run 2 days in a row to prevent injuries. But as I stepped out the door and walked away, I felt the need to …speed things up! So I ran. And it was fun. I am loving my morning runs!!! Since it’s warm + sunny in the morning, you gotta make hay while the sun shines. Come winter I’ll be sleeping at this time!
I just covered 3 miles because I’m also biking to and from the bakery and because I ran yesterday, but it was enough to get my sweat glands super charged up! HOT!!
Whether it’s 1 mile or 10 miles, any running before breakfast is a huge accomplishment in my book.
[You have no idea how many failed self photos I took before this one. All photos of my chest!!]
Hot day, cool soup.
I made a smoothie out of greens from our garden! Only, I used chard + lettuce instead of the thicker kale or baby spinach. You COULD taste the greens in this bowl – but the flavor was almost like LIME!! I really enjoyed it!
So-Green-It’s-Lime Smoothie
- 3/4 cup yogurt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 large banana
- 1 handful ice
- 2 giant handfuls mixed garden greens
- 1 heaping tbsp almond butter ( <—sad because I couldn’t taste it at all)
- Ambrosial Orange –Cranberry Granola
- Hidden sunken berries!
Blend in a vita-mix! Use the plunger if you need to.
Sometimes smoothies make my stomach clench. I think I eat them too fast and/or the liquid travels through too fast. Ouch! It usually only lasts a minute or two, but it’s something I’ve noticed after eating lots of them.
Happy Thirstday!
The Healthy Hipster says
LOVE the idea of a “limey” green smoothie! Sounds like the perfect refreshing breakkinz. 🙂
Khushboo says
I’m sorry Kath but I’ll be honest with u- this might be the first breakfast of yours that doesn’t leave me drooling! As long as you enjoyed, then that’s all that matters 🙂
KathEats says
It wasn’t my favorite breakfast ever either 🙂
KathEats says
But it WAS good!!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I am loving my morning runs lately – maybe because I know how miserably hot it’s going to get later?! They are refreshing when it’s only 70 and the sun is just coming up.
Krissie J says
Big fan of your bowl, too cute! 🙂
Molly @ RDexposed says
I’d love to run in mornings if it weren’t for work and my thick hair that takes for-ev-er to dry!
Lisa Fine says
I feel that way after smoothies sometimes too. I’ve read that mixing fruit with just about anything is a little harder to digest. Maybe that with the coldness of the ice makes it a little funny sometimes.
I love adding all kinds of greens to my smoothies. It’s much more fun to go out and pick some lettuce and spinach from the garden than to think of going to a store to buy smoothie fillings.
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
I believe any exercise is great! The important thing is to make an effort 🙂 since it’s all about consistently! You should have posted the blooper photos!
Baking 'n' Books says
I LOVE the color of it! And the bowl – I want the bowl. Cute.
I prefer to just add almond butter and apple butter after I make oatmeal or on top of my yogurt/granola bowls and swirl it in – can’t risk missing it!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Interesting smoothie bowl! I’m inspired to start running in the morning since it seems like you’re enjoying it so much!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I’m the same way with smoothies — I have to drink them slowly, or I have 1/2 then wait a few minutes and have the other 1/2.
If I try to take a pic of myself I need to take about 12 pics — and maybe (just maybe!) one of them looks ok.
Mary Frances says
Aren’t we fortunate to live in a time with digital photographs. Just imagine if you had to buy the film, take the photograph and then take it to get developed which took several days. Then pay more money so the entire cost of each photograph was almost $1. This was at a time when gasoline cost less than $1 and minimum wage was less than $2. Also, there was really no way to post it online to share with other people. Actually, this was the way it was done just a few short decades ago! Kath, maybe if you have a good sized mirror to put just behind the camera and use your remote, you will get just the right picture in less time.
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
Geez, I can’t believe it’s June 9th! Where is the time going?
Running before breakfast IS a huge accomplishment. Way to go!
Hope you enjoy your day!
Amelia says
Gotta love the self timer. 😉
Very interesting flavor combinations for your smoothie, but I bet it was very refreshing. Have a great day at YOUR bakery!!! 🙂
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
Yey for morning runs! 🙂 I am all about the post run self pics, but always mess them up as well!
Hope you have a great day! 🙂
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Ummm I can down a smoothie in like 1 minutes. I try to slow down so I can actually enjoy the flavors!
MaryMac says
I love your blog! You have me dreaming of opening a Great Harvest one day- Ha! I have 2 questions- first, I didn’t see the greens in your recipe- how much did you add? And second, when I click on your links (for the granola and vitamix) the new window opens, but it’s empty. I’m overseas and on a Mac- is that why? I want to see this granola!! 🙂 Keep up the good work!
KathEats says
All my mistakes!!!!
Fixed the greens + Ambrosial links. Took vita-mix away.
Elizabeth @ Eat Clean Fun says
That green is beautiful! It looks pretty with the polka dot bowl. I love my morning walks, I am not up to running yet but hopefully some time sooner than later I will be 🙂
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
Happy thirstday to you too! I think I’m going to be extra thirsty today, since today is gonna be a scorcher!
Hope says
I love that bowl! It’s so incredibly cute! I want one! 🙂
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
Well no matter what, the picture makes it look reaaaaalllyyyy good…I’m always a sucker for pictures haha. Either way, I never dislike foods–except for when it’s all deep fried and I’m rolling from stomach pain lol
Alaina says
I had that same feeling the first time I chugged down a smoothie. And I think that was my problem, I drank it too fast. Too much dairy all at once!
Yah for getting out there to run! It’s a hot one out today.
Eliza says
Haha – how funny. All this time I thought it was ‘make haste while the sun still shines’.
But, I have a question. What sort of music are you currently listening to on your iPod? I need some inspiration!
KathEats says
Oh my gosh I have always heard hay. I thought it was a farming thing!! Maybe it is haste!?
I’m all over Glee, pop music + Brendan James
Stacy says
It is hay 🙂
Claire says
Stacy is correct. You may remember the expression (and foreshadowing) in the first chapter entitled with that expression of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book, The Long Winter.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I feel the need for speed too right now. Not with running, but with other things! Looks like you started the day off on the right foot! I hope it’s a great one for you, Kath!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I second your comment about smoothies making your stomach clench. I usually drink mine too fast too… you don’t realize it while you’re doing it, but a few mins later I’ve got that “oh my gosh, I’m so full and i’ve got a smoothie baby” feeling!
Mary Frances says
I always use the ratio of about 1/3 ice to the 2/3 F R O Z E N fruit along with the other ingredients: oats, flax, chia, greek yogurt, skim milk, salt and vanilla. It comes out like ice cream and takes about ten minutes to eat. I guess with that consistency, I slowly enjoy it like desert for breakfast and never get that feeling. However, it is filling and lasts 4-5 hours.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I don’t think I would’ve ever been brave enough to do this with chard. Looks pretty, but not so sure if I could do it!
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
It is odd to me that I can drink kale smoothies without batting an eye, but chard in or lettuce in a smoothie always leaves me meh – if I have extra chard, I tend to juice it and use the pulp in raw crackers, but kale, which is more assertive, I love in smoothies. Go figure.
I love the bowl in this picture. Are you doing any more bowl promotions. I have been kicking myself for missing the Cali bowls 🙁 I went back and forth on them because they were 8oz, and I like my smoothies to be a bit larger, but I should have gone for them.
Balancing Sylvia says
A limey smoothie? Sounds interesting to say the least 🙂 You’ve done such a great job making sure to start your day right even with all the craziness. Keep it up lady!
chloe @ 321delish says
I agree! morning workouts really set the stage for an awesome day…not matter what you do! At least you got up and moving!
Melissa says
I love pre-breakfast runs! I can’t wait until school is out for summer so I can get back to doing them! 🙂 Have a beautiful day, Kath!
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
I agree that no matter the distance, a run in the morning is the best!
Lu says
i just had an awesome reconciliation where i didn’t have to adjust a darn thing (from one QB business user to another) and i just have to tell you it’s the best feeling in the world when your accounts are PERFECT. such a funny thing to leave a comment for but i thought you could relate!
KathEats says
Haha – awesome!!!!
Ally (Girl V Food) says
I get the exact same thing when I drink smoothies too fast. My stomach goes haywire for a few minutes and then settles down! Still love drinking them, though! It’s so hot today I might make one for lunch!
Sarah says
I get that after smoothie bowls too! I’ve hypothezied that because everything has been liquified already, the digestive enzymes present in the saliva and stomach don’t have a chance to get to work properly/be released/work with the food hence the pain. Not sure how scientifically accurate this is though??? Whatever, I tend to avoid them now 🙁
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
hey sarah! I chew my smoothies for that reason. it seems to help. 🙂
Gina (Yogattude) says
I would get that feeling when I drank my smoothies, but now that I do the bowl thing, I tend to “eat” them much slower and feel fine. Great job on the morning run! My plan was morning yoga, but my body said “no way” so I postponed until after work;)
J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Limy sounds good! But I’m imagining key lime… Lol
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
Hah, I was thinking that too!!! Interesting recipe idea 😀
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Yay for a happy run. I thought of your “gazelle v. clunker” entry when I did my six miles this morning…I feel like a metamorphized from elephant to gazelle between mile 3-4. =)
lynn @ the actor's diet says
those sinky berries!
emily says
I bet a green smoothie made with key lime juice in the mix would actually be really good! Or maybe the lemon flavored Stonyfield yogurt.
MtnBlueBird says
If you find my question too personal then just bypass it an move on I’ll understand. My question is… what kind of sports bra do you like? I am built quite similar as you. Short (5’3) with a fair amount muscle on my frame (I laugh, because my legs look like yours and my husband is jealous that my calves are bigger than his. Hee Hee!). My girls are a 34 C. I enjoy jogging every other day if I can. It’s a daunting task to find a sports bra that provides optimum support. Heading into my 47th year next month I need to take care of my friends!
Just curious!
KathEats says
Anything by Moving Comfort!!! They are all great. I got mine from Bare Necessities
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
I have the same one you’re wearing in the picture (Kath) in hot pink! But the good ones for larger-chested ladies are *not* cheap, so if I balance out my collection with a bunch of the cheapo, $16 sports bras from Target (I think the brand is Champion?) and buy them in a small so they’re very snug, then I’ll wear two! It’s definitely not the most flattering look (hello, uniboob!) but it’s cost-effective and holds everything in. Just have to make sure to wear a looser top to avoid, uh…bumps. 😀
Emily @ Comfortable Home Life says
Green smoothies in a bowl are always a good idea! It’s my go-to breakfast every day. I always use spinach though — I’m afraid to try other greens!
Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
I have a tough time just drinking a smoothie or whatnot at meals. It just goes right through me. Leaves me feeling not too good.
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
Maybe if you put berries in the greens smoothie the flavor would have been more enjoyable? It LOOKS beautiful 🙂
Casey says
I agree with your 1 or 10 miles comment!
I was supposed to run yesterday morning, but I flaked! So, I gave my fiance permission to push me right out of bed this morning if I didn’t get up on my own. Luckily I was up and out the door. I did 4 miles (almost quit at 3, then again at 3.5, then decided I could handle another 0.5) and ended up really sweaty. I came home to check the humidity…it was 95%. Now I’m at work trying not to fall asleep at my desk!
It’s supposed to be close to 100 degrees later on today. Yikes!! Glad to get that run in already!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
There was a girl running next to me at the gym yesterday that looked JUST like you!! i kept thinking “Why would Kath be here? There’s no way..” but I still kept thinking it was you- haha!!
KathEats says
Maybe it WAS me!!
Julia says
I tried the whole Green Smoothie thing this week, but I admit that the whole time I kind of wished I stuck with the usual oats or yogurt bowl haha. Great run !
Angel7 says
I am sure that a morning run is better than an afternoon run when the sun is scorching hot!
Great way to get your veggies 🙂

Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
Great job on your run! Isn’t cool how some times you just feel like running? I just love those days.
I’ve never thought of putting greens in my smoothies and I must admit, I’m a little scared to try it. Won’t know until I try though right?
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I try not to run two days in a row either… but sometimes when I’m feeling good and the weather is perfect, I can’t help but run!
Namaste Gurl says
I went on a run this morning too, only I had Ashley’s’ pumpkin buckwheat bake after– aka, pumpkin bread! Have a wonderful day at the bakery 🙂
Stacy says
I’m really afraid that your blog posts are going to become a bad influence on me. I was out at lunchtime today and could not stop thinking about Great Harvest. I just had to stop by and pick up a loaf of the Red, White, and Blueberry bread. I’m afraid my GH stops are going to be much more frequent now that I see it so much! 🙂
Erin says
Stacy–believe it! Kath has me craving GH all the time, leading me to trek out there every couple of weeks (it’s about a 15-minute drive–not awful, but not an everyday trip) for a sample and a loaf (or two!).
I’ve even got a free cookie coming my way on my next visit! Woot!
Mom says
I’m having a hard time here in Hillsborough. I keep thinking: My kids own a bakery, and if I were there, they’d surely let me have some more samples! (And some treats to bring home, too.)
Erin says
I feel you. If the GH Upper Arlington owners were my relatives, I don’t think I’d be able to curb the addiction. I’d have to move! 😉
Mom says
Yes, and Kath has a lovely spare bedroom too. I wonder if she would let her sainted mother move in…
Mary Frances says
I bet they would enjoy having their dinners ready on the table when they got home!

I had the SAME breakfast yesterday for the SAME exact reason! So refreshing on these disgustingly hot days!
Julie - StressStories says
Your blog is so inspiring! I love workout pictures, especially in relation to your runs – they really inspire me to get out there, even if I might feel a bit sluggish… And you look so happy 🙂 Reminds me of how I feel myself after a run.
KathEats says
Thanks!
Kayla (Little Miss Healthify) says
I notice the same things after eating a smoothie! I think it’s because you’re getting a LOT of nutrients and calories in such a small package and my stomach has to work harder to get them all down or something! Haha, but yeah, I always feel a little stomach clench after slurping a big ole smoothie!
Loved the color of this one, GREEN!
Rebecca says
There is nothing like a morning run, plus it makes breakfast even better! I adore your bowl by the way.
Kaitlyn @ 7 Plates says
Love the smoothie. Looks so good. I’m planning on making much more of those now that it’s HOT!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
Smoothies are the best after sweaty runs! SO refreshing!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I just bough some baby spinach and I can’t WAIT to have a GM!!!
Jillian says
That’s the worst!! –when you add in nut butters to a smoothie and can’t taste it. I would have just spooned it into my mouth if I knew that! boo!
Jenn says
Kath, I just bought some wheatberries. Now what? What are some ideas on how to use them and in what? Thank you!!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Hi Jen!
I had to comment, since I just read Tina’s book (Carrots ‘N’ Cake) and she wrote about them quite a bit. here’s one post: http://carrotsncake.com/2009/01/wonderful-wheat-berries.html that links back to Kath’s –> https://www.katheats.com/recipage?recipe_id=6000108&prev_term=wheatberry
Hope this helps!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Jenn* sorry for the misspell!
Jenn says
Thanks! I’ll peruse that right now…and no problem:)
KathEats says
That’ what I would recommend too!
Carrie says
Your face just popped up on my weather.com page for Open Sky – – too fun!
kris (everyday oats) says
I love morning runs! – after I’m done…:)
It just takes some motivation to get myself up and out the door!
Michelle says
Finally made it over to the Kirkwood GH…..Tom says hello back to you!
Had the California Cobb (minus bacon much to the cashier’s dismay!) on Dakota Bread. OMG..that bread IS as good as you say it is. However…the sampling of Cinnamon Chip is what will make my return to the GH happen. BEST breakfast bread EVER! Doughy does not even touch how soft and perfectly textured this bread was!
KathEats says
Oh yay!!
Chad @ thebreakupnote says
Kath you’re so good at food that your garden greens taste like limes. I had a salad today and the lettuce tasted nothing like lime. That made me mad.
All jokes aside, I can see the flavor of chard, when paired with the right things, tasting citrusy.
KathEats says
I apologize on the lettuce’s behalf
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
That first pic of you Kath is awesome! You look happy, strong, powerful, and just like you’re getting such a good workout in!
KathEats says
Thanks!!!

I like those country sayings! Of course most people have never seen hay being made, or eaten like my horse has 🙂
I started by writing for CalorieLab, and am still at it!
Congrats on the RD!

green smoothies in a bowl are always delish, and I LOVE that bowl 🙂
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
Smoothies are the BEST after a morning workout!! I always put the almond buttah on my spoon and get a little bit in each scoop!
Charissa says
Beautiful! You have totally inspired me…I will be making myself eat more smoothies. Especially green ones…I do LOVE them!
I often eat them out of bowls too…somehow it makes it taste better!

Such a vibrant, vibrant green! Go you!
