I’m in a bit of a funk today. Don’t know if it’s hormonal (always to blame, right!?), cream-based, the weather, the looming start of school and thus 24-hours-of-stress hanging over my head, or what. I hope it goes away soon! I hate my outfit too. It’s uncomfortable. I should go change.
I got some stuff done this morning and left for an early workout at 10:30. I got the urge to go outside. It is a nice day out there.
Biked to the gym (I can’t believe I used to DRIVE to the gym before I had my bike!!) and did 30 sweaty minutes on the Stairmaster with Country Living. Love home magazines 🙂 I’m sore from yesterday’s pull-ups, so I skipped weights and biked back on home.
Mango was on the menu, as this guy was getting black spots from overripeness.
MY GOSH was it a good mango!
I need to update my mango video because I no longer peel them like I used to. I use a serrated knife! What an invention! It perfectly slices off the skin, when I then knaw the fruit from, and is much bigger and longer than my paring knife. The discovery of this knife has changed my life. I’ve got a Gather post coming up on it!
Most of the mango went directly from cutting board into my mouth and I was left with two cheeks. I ate one for lunch and am saving the second for tomorrow’s breakfast.
Lunch was a Mushroom Mash sandwich, the details of which are being saved for another Mushroom Channel post this fall.
It was good.
Race For The Cure
One exciting thing I did this morning: registered for Race For The Cure!!!!!!!
I don’t run in many races because they are expensive. Matt and I are running and it cost $66. At least it’s all for a wonderful cause! But I do like racing and I feel that my pace has increased some this year. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to train for a 5K? Here’s a post on my PR times. I would LOVE to break 23:00 this year! Since the Jingle Jog start was off, I think I can do it!
Last year Team KERF raised $1,367.60 for breast cancer research. Since there are quite a few good training fund raisers going on around the blog world, I’m not going to set high goals this year, but if you’d like to help me reach my personal goal of $126, Komen would love your donation!
And of course I’ll be heading to the Great Grapes Wine Festival, our fourth year in a row, I believe, for all the after-fun!!
WORK!
kay (eating machine) says
Oh man, that mango looks so good… I’m having major fruit cravings today!
Anne says
I love that you think you might be in a cream based funk! It gave me a laugh… you are good for not using cream to try and cure your funk. I fall for that bad habit occasionally!
brandi says
i hope your funk is lifted! some days are just strange like that.
good for you two signing up for that race – it is a great cause!
Cait (Cait's Plate) says
I don’t even like mangoes and that makes me want to eat one!!
Yay for Race for the Cure! You just reminded me that I should sign up as well 🙂
Anne Marie@Her New Weigh says
That mango looks delicious! Is it bad that I’ve never had one?
Christie @ Quit Your Diet says
I’d love to see a new updated mango video, I love mangos but they are so hard to hack into.
K says
I’m loving that mushroom sandwich! I can’t wait to see the recipe!!
I vote for changing the outfit – if I’m wearing something cute, usually I feel better 🙂
Whitney says
I always do Race for the Cure! I am planning to sign up in the next few days. Maybe we should do some speed work Saturday, huh?
Eve says
The mango really does look delicious, when they are ripe and sweet they are one of my favorite fruits. YUM! I agree if your outfit is uncomfortable go change — it always puts me in a bad mood if I don’t like my outfit, and it’s not worth it!
Pam (Highway to Health) says
That mango looks amazing.
Race for the cure should be amazing! It’s a bit early but good luck!
Julie says
I had a yummy mushroom sandwich today too! I’m still thinking about it, it was that good.
Runeatrepeat says
Congrat’s on the race sign up! In terms of training – I would say make sure you run at least once a week at race goal pace. I’m sure running with Matt takes care of that easily. A few sprints at the end are fun and helpful too. I’m sure you’ll PR no problem.
I know you don’t run that many days per week because of previous injuries. I totally believe in that – listen to your body more than anything 🙂
Lindzee says
Hi Kath! I read your blog everyday. I am really exciting you are running in the Race for the Cure. My girlfriends and I started a non-profit organization that donates 100% of funds raised to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. www.thinkpinkboise.com. We sell “Save the Boobs” shirts and would love to send you and Matt one to wear during the race. Please let me know if you are interested. Love your blog so much!
Sarah says
So, I have been a long time blog reader, and never a blog writer, but I have been inspired to start my own blog! Check it out at FitTipExchange.wordpress.com !
Jenna says
kath, i hope the rest of the day you lose your “funk”!
that melon looks great, have to try one soon 🙂

Christina says
Kath, speedwork is definitely a must. Ignore what’s about to sound like an infomercial, but my pace significantly improved just by adding in one session of hill intervals a week for two weeks prior to my last 5k. This link will give you info on different types of hill workouts.
http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?uan=159
Another suggestion that has been suggested to me is 1200 repeats on a track.
http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/Running%20University/Article%201/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm
Plug a recent personal best 5k time and it’ll give you the time you need to be running the repeats. Warm up with a 15-20 minute jog, complete 2-3 repeats with a 400- 800m recovery walk/jog between to start, then cool down.
Erica says
I am so PROUD AND EXCITED that you and Matt are running the Komen race!!!!! I seriously have goosebumps right now. Now that I am one of the people that Komen helps, I am sincerely touched when people give their own time and money (not to mention SWEAT!) to help raise money for research so that one day nobody will have to face a diagnosis of breast cancer. I am looking forward to the day when my daughter won’t even have to give it a second thought, because of people like you who gave selflessly.
I DO BELIEVE that we will see a cure in our lifetime. I DO BELIEVE that we.are.so.close. Very exciting times!
So, from this breast cancer survivor, thank you again from the bottom of my heart. I hope you do well on fundraising and that you have a new PR as well! ((hugs))

Ali says
That mango looks so juicy! Maybe it helps your day improve? I hope so, yummy fruit always makes me smile!
Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) says
now I’m craving mango like no other!
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
Ugh I could eat 12 mangoes a day – I LOVE them!! I even looked up where/how to grow mango trees…but alas, Iowa weather is not mango friendly!
Angharad says
I haven’t had a mango in maybe 2 years. That is criminal and you have just managed to make me absolutely crave one!!
michelle says
I adore mango’s. I second the serrated knife for the skin and I solved the cutting problem by using a corn holder- the little corn thing that you hold the ears with so your fingers don’t get hot or something? I use that to hold the mango steady. No more slips!
Alison says
It’s already been said but I’ll reiterate that speed work is very helpful if you want to increase your pace. Even “unofficial” speed work (vs. running on the track) like throwing in some sprints in to your normal runs. I like to warm up, pick up the pace and run FAST until I feel like I need to slow the pace, then run FAST again once I feel like I’ve recovered. I leave the iPod at home for those runs so I can pay attention to how I’m feeling and can focus on pushing myself and running outside my comfort zone for a little bit longer. Having land marks like “I’m going to sprint to the stop sign” can make it fun and challenging too.
I’ll stop now, but like Hal Higdon says, if you want to run fast, you have RUN FAST! I came in under 23:00 and set a new 5K PR a few weeks ago… you’re so close, you can totally do it!
Jenny says
Your post made me realize how bland my lunch today is! I need to explore more interesting choices. I have tried mango once but it seemed too acidic to my tongue. It sure does look good.
I agree with the poster who suggested the Runner’s World link. I did their interval training workout plan and picked up my time a bit.
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Augh, I know I have those days as well when everything seems to drag me down. Hope the rest of your day gets a lot better! 🙂
That mango looks fabulous! Such a PERFECT color!
Congrats on the race. I can’t wait to hear more about it as it gets closer.
Marissa says
Yummy Mango!
Courtney says
Can’t wait to read your post on the serrated knife!!! I always kind of wondered what that knife in my knife block was good for!!!
Hope the funk lifts soon!

Oooh is that a Cutco brand knife?? My parents gave us a set for our wedding and I LOVE them! I use the paring knife for pretty much everything 🙂
Haleigh says
Your sandwiches always look delicious, perhaps it’s that amazing-looking bread?
Danielle says
I’m a big fan of the serated knife!
What a great cause to run for! Good luck!
Voracious Vorilee says
Mangoes are some of my favorite fruits. I don’t buy them often, though they are delicous 🙂
Lizzy says
mmm mangoes are one of those fruits i haven’t eaten much of and i’m starting to regret that decision, because yours looks so good! 🙂
Melissa says
LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog!
The race for the cure is a fantastic event but just a word of caution…if it’s anywhere near as crowded as most of them are, it is really REALLY difficult to run like you want to (ie with any sort of speed) unless you are up near the front. It’s a great cause but difficult to get a PR because of all the people.
Erin says
Congrats on registering. That’s great. I bet you’ll meet your target in no time.
Nothing beats a ripe mango!
Daria (Summer of the CSAs) says
Hope you’re feeling better!
I love racing, but the fees definitely add up. If I could just get fast enough to win prize money then I’d be fine. 😉
chandra says
It seems like a lot of people are in a funk (including myself)… must be something in the air today.
Lara says
You have A LOT going on, that is enough to make one feel in a funk even without the hormonal stuff! It will pass, always does. Maybe relax in a bubble bath or some chill yoga?
Pullups are such an awesome strength move. Do you do them “manually” or use the assisted machine?
Meggilizz--Meggie's Munchies says
It’s very hard to not shove freshly cut mango straight into your mouth after slicing them up!!! I can’t wait to see your mushroom recipe 🙂
AnnQ says
Man, am SO craving a Mango right now! 😀
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
I mutilated my last mango. 🙁 I hate days when I’m in a funk… they happen more often than I’d like!

The mango with the sandwich looks soooo good. Love the updated cupcake picture. Thanks for the update about the butter you used.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i have a similar paring knife, from my mom’s kitchen. makes life very easy!
Hallie (Healthy Twists) says
Good luck with the 5K! I’ve done Komen events (race for the cure and the 3 Day) and they are such a great organization.
Marisa (Trim The Fat) says
Yummy looking mango!
Yay for doing the 5k; your time is awesome to start off with!
Susan says
I just registed for Run for the Cure, which is basically the Canadian version of that race. I’m so excited!!! I’ve done it for the past four years, but this will be the first year I’m in good enough shape to RUN the whole thing 😀
Justy2003 says
Looks like a Cutco knife to me! I have a set and love it! And I got it super cheap cuz I used to sell them 🙂 They are super sharp!
Evan Thomas says
Is that any particular bread? it looks so deliciously grainy
Lainie says
I’ve never been a huge mango fan, but your picture makes it look so good…perhaps I should give them another try…
Kath says
Thanks for the 5K recs!
Lindzee,
I think the boob shirts are super cute! But to be honest, I’m not sure I’d feel all that comfortable at a breast cancer event wearing it. I know my grandmother might be offended 🙁 But I’d be happy to promote the company as a whole. Would you still want to send one of the other styles of shirt?
michelle ,
Great idea!!!
Lara ,
I can do about 3 real ones, but when I do them at the gym, they are assisted 🙂
Evan ,
Only my very favorite bread ever – Great Harvest Flax Oat Bran!

Madelin @ What is for breakfast? says
Good on you for doing the race, I’m sure you kick it!!
Beth says
You have Cutco knives! The whole set or just a few?
angieinatlanta says
That sandwich looks super yummy! And I love mango; it’s my favorite fruit, the riper the better!
Lauren says
Aw, funks are the worst. Good thing they are usually short lived but I totally understand when you just have one of those days.
Congrats on signing up for such a worthy race! Even though they can get a bit pricy, racing for charities is always so fulfilling. You feel good all around, mind body and soul!
Rebecca says
Yum! You make me want mango!
Jac says
Do 5K’s alternate days (rest days light exercise).. Get enough fuel and eat the same type of food before the race so that your stomach doesn’t act up. )
Just a suggestion from what i’ve read before.. 🙂
Emily says
I think that I`ll end up doing the Charlotte race too. I`m hoping that I can convince my boyfriend to drive down with me, if I bribe him into letting him hang out with his friend while I go to Ikea sometime. 🙂
Caroline says
I remember that mango video! I first watched it way before I had ever had a mango, and you inspired me to go and try it…now it’s one of my favorite fruits;)
Sarah says
Hi Kath!
Just out of curiosity, what kind of bike do you have to tool around town? I have a mountain bike right now but I was thinking of trading it in for a hybrid, possibly. The mountain bike is just so heavy to lug around town! Thanks for the help!
Sarah

Here’s the post where I got it. $40 on Craig’s List. It’s held up thru two summers and lots of riding, but it’s definitely getting old.

Good for you signing up for Race For The Cure. It is supporters like you who we have to thank for breakthroughs in breast cancer treatment. As well as companies like Quantum Immunologics, who work towards creating safer breast cancer treatment. I read at BreastCancerInvesting.com that their research that they are working on something that targets cancer cells specifically and doesn’t require surgery or chemotherapy.
