Why does it always take me forever to pack up and leave the house!! I’m working on getting out the door for my San Francisco trip and of course I’m running behind. It didn’t help that I had to pick out outfits to wear to parties, cold weather, coats, layers, multiple workouts, etc.!
The husband and I had plans for a morning run but at 5:00 neither of us felt like getting up so we reset the alarm an hour
I went to the gym after he was up and dressed and came home to find little post-it notes all around the house, including this one on my TOWEL!!!!
I had a great sweaty workout today. I found a new road to run down near the Y and decided to explore it. I found all these mansions hidden in the woods! It was cool and so beautiful. I felt like a medieval princess exploring a forest!! The winding road was about a mile long so I ran to the end and back and then went inside for some Stairmaster and abs.
Once home, I showered and did some packing and then was starving so I came down for a bowl of oats. Today’s bowl was 1/2 cup portion made with 1/2 a banana (leftover from the husband’s breakfast with an "Eat Me" post-it!) and hemp milk. Toppings were granola and almond butter.
I think I’m going to try to wrap things up quickly and hit the road to have lunch at my parents’ house around 1:30 or 2. We’ll see how fast I can be!

After your lovey post last night I felt sure the towel postit would be filled with lovey words.
The fact that he drew a roach is quite hilarious 😀

Oh man, I thought I was the only one who got love post-its… I have a little notebook full of them that my beau has left for me over the years. But you have me beat… the best drawing I ever got on one was stick figures. 🙂
Suzanne says
eeew…roaches! haha…that was cute.
I know you’re off to vacation…but I’m so bummed.
Maybe you and the other readers can give me some advice.
I am about to leave for the doctor – I hurt my foot last night at kickboxing and I had to stay home from work (well, i’m not bummed about that part!).
But, I am one of those people who has to work out or I will feel extremely icky and guilty.
I’m pretty sure I have to stay off the ankle for a while…but I workout almost everyday! I’m trying to lose 10 lbs and i am afraid this is going to set me back so much!
Any advice on how to work around this injury? I just don’t want to lose out on all the hardwork I have accomplished thus far. I have been working so hard these past few weeks and finally seeing some results. 🙁
Thanks everyone. Happy Tuesday!
Have a great time, Kath!

Suzanne-
I was a girl who worked out EVERYDAY for 5 years until I fell running and shattered my knee cap!! I was in a brace for 5 weeks and had to do machine cardio (not run for 6 months). I took that time to do weights (mainly upper body) and abs. I did pilates videos and took some classes too. I’m really thin and I didn’t gain a lb. of fat…but I got some muscle!
On the OTHER hand…..my mom was also an avid exercizer but weighing in at 190 lbs and 5’4″. She had a hip problem, was told not to work out for 6 months. So she decided to watch what she ate and do weight watchers. She lost FIFTY lbs NOT exercising!!! It’s not always a bad thing! It may lift some restrictions for you! It did for me and my mom!
Sorry so long!
Sammie says
Kath you have the sweetest husband – mine could use some tips. After 8 yrs. he is a little rusty – or should I say comfy. Happy & safe travels!
Christin says
Hi Suzanne,
maybe try some pilates? since its mostly on the ground you’ll be able to get at least a bit of a workout without risking further injury to your healing foot.
Also maybe some swimming…and then there are always handweights and various crunches…
I know its not much cardio, but it will at least be some good toning and stretching! 🙂
Diane says
Aww Suzanne I feel for you, what a bummer 🙁 But good for you for staying motivated by your goals, I’m sure you can work around this and keep up your great work! How about trying swimming for some cardio? Also this can be a great excuse to focus on some strength training- you can still do upper body weights and abs. Sorry I’m no expert but I’m sure others will have some great advice.
Good luck, feel better, and congrats on all your hardwork so far!
P.S. Enjoy the day off from work 🙂

hi suzanne,
i sprained my ankle really badly about a month ago. it does take time to heal.
first priority is R.I.C.E. and stay off it completely for the first few days. i exercise daily too and this can be frustrating, but your greatest risk for a serious, debilitating reinjury is during that window of time.
after that, what about the stationary bike? i found i could do that without pain after a few days. (an upright bike only though because the recumbent ones do seem to put too much pressure on the ankle.)
Heather says
Haha- love the post its! He’s quite the artist, too…
Have so much fun on your trip, Kath! Eat some sourdough for me 🙂
Rose says
Aw, that post-it is pretty cute 🙂
In other news, I think your bowl of oats looks really, really good – reminds me I need to try almond butter.
Have fun on your trip.
Suzanne: I was also going to recommend swimming – do you have access to a pool?
Maureen says
Suzannne-
I just sprained my ankle and got a stress fracture in the fore foot on Sat. I am planning to swim a few days per week and do upper body weights the other days. It sucks, but giving it rest is the best thing, or it will take even longer to get back to what you love doing. This is speaking from experience, as I’m a veteran at ankle sprains and fractures. ;(
yaz says
your husband is the best! i’m sooo jealous 😉

The Husband,
You should consider writing a manual for those guys out there who don’t have a clue how to treat a lady. I bet you’d make a lot of money.
rhodeygirl says
suzanne: my advice is to just focus as much as possible as what you are eating, and make sure you rest as much as the doctor suggests.
I fractured 3 bones in my ankle on may 4th and am just getting back into running again (after 7 weeks of absolutely nothing) and in that time i lost 1 lb (only have about 4 lbs to lose to be at my all time goal weigh). it was all about what I was eating. i knew that since i wasn’t running i had to eat a little less and i did.
kath- have fun at the blogher conference!
Chandra (Also known as Clara!) says
omigosh that’s so hilarious – the roach!!!
how sweet 🙂
I am so excited to hear about how the BlogHer conference goes! Safe travels!!!
Also guess what – I have my own blog now! You’ve inspired me, along with many others. It’s: http://www.iameatingtolive.wordpress.com
I’ve been going by “Clara” but my real name is actually Chandra, which I didn’t want to use at first because I know there’s another Chandra over at onebodylifechance.wordpress.com, but I decided since I have a blog now I might as well share my real name 😀

Hi everyone –
I just got back from the doctor and was feeling so bummed. But I just read all of your encouraging comments/advice – and it made me feel so much better. You are all so sweet! Thank you for all your reponses!
So here’s the verdct: I have a badly torn ligament in my left ankle. I have to wear this brace-boot type of thing and have to stay off of it as much as I can. I have to go to physical therapy 3 times a week so they can help heal it fast with some ultrasound(?). Oh I am so bummed!
JESS, CHRISTIN, DIANE, SMILESARA, ROSE, MAUREEN, RHODEYGIR –
I will be following all of your advice and will do pilates, upper body/abs, and see if I can find a pool. I can’t sit here and be bummed for too long – what’s done is done, and I have to deal with it, right? 🙂
So I’ll enjoy just laying around today. 🙂

Kath,
Your run sounds so enchanted. I wish I could get into running. None of my cardio is changing my body. It is hard to want to go out in the Texas heat. Any tips on getting into running or other cardio that might change my body significantly?
Stacy (IN) says
I’m making muffins and would like to save a few in the freezer, so they don’t go bad quickly in the humidity. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best method (individually wrapped, etc.)?
BethT says
Megan, I would strongly suggest interval training. Work at a medium pace for a couple minutes, then ratchet things up to high intensity/speed for a minute. Alternate these two for 20 – 25 mins.
Cat says
Megan,
I followed Jenna from eatliverun.com, and downloaded a few yoga classes from yogadownload.com. After doing the Baptiste Power Yoga class, I was SO SORE! It felt amazing! I’ve only been doing it for a short time and my boyfriend just told me today how amazed he is by how fit and toned I look. It also does wonders for stress too. I highly suggest trying a couple classes, especially the 90 min power yoga class.
Kath,
Your hubby is SO sweet! I really hope you have a wonderful trip to San Fran. It’s a beautiful city! Have fun! 🙂
Jessica says
I love the post-it note messages – that is so cute! We all should do that on occasion. Have a wonderful time in San Fran – I’m looking forward to seeing the photos!
Korin says
Stacy,
I bake a ton and end up freezing a lot of stuff. I would individually wrap each muffin tightly in clear plastic wrap and then, if you have it, again in aluminum foil. I have had success with this method each time with muffins.
With cookies, I wrap them the same but flat side on flat side, two together. Same with bars/brownies. Good luck.
mom says
Lovely roach!! My son-in-law the artist! They look a lot like the roaches in my house.
SweetsandSweats says
Good luck packing and getting on the road. Finding notes at home is so sweet!!! (and obviously humorous!)
Jenny says
Stacy,
I’m glad you asked the question about the muffins. I had a ton of bananas and blackberries to use – on their last legs – and made some banana black and blueberry muffins today. Unfortunately, no one will eat them in my house but me. So, since I can’t finish a dozen on my own, I was thinking of freezing them. I’m going to try Korin’s suggestion – thanks guys!
Kath says
Suzanne ,
You poor thing!!! Here’s to a speedy recovery.
Megan ,
Enchanted – that’s the word I was looking for! Try going running early in the morning. Like 5:30. When its’ dewy out and the sun is still only peeking up. It’s GORGEOUS that time of day and the lack of heat really makes a difference.
Kath
Deb says
Suzanne, get better soon! I think it’s a great time to take advantage and start lifting weights (or doing any kind of strength training- I would be a bit careful with yoga though as some of the moves can put pressure on your ankles) you’ll be amazed at how much that will change your body…sadly, you WILL have to watch what you eat a bit more than before as your cardio will be reduced.
Megan… same thing… lifting weights will change your body- as will the HIIT, interval training that someone else spoke about- you can see HUGE change with both of those things!! Getting advice or sessions with a trainer is a really prudent move! Good luck and let us know how you get along!
Heatherlee says
those post-it notes are too cute.
i posted a little while back about wanting to lose 10 pounds. you suggested upping the exercise, which i know will help a lot. my problem is i can’t seem to find the motivation. is there anything special you did in the begining to motivate yourself?
Kath says
Heatherlee ,
What kind of exercise do you like? Do you hate going to the gym? Hate being in the heat? Like watching TV and can change the hours you workout? Have you tried walking with a magazine!?! For me, reading material makes anything enjoyable. You’ve got to find something that you enjoy doing.
