Greetings from Richmond! The day is chugging along. Getting 6 hours or learn on!
We’ve had talks on bariatric surgery, motivational interviewing and a community health update on Virginia.
But I am most excited about "Sports Nutrition: Optimizing Performance Through Food" up next!
Pizza was for lunch 🙂
Along with salad and cookies
I had a nice big slice of veggie pizza over a pile of greens. I would have had a whole second plate of salad but I ran out of time talking!!
Snacking on some apple slices in a packet now (sponsored by McD’s), and was told to "go shopping" with the leftovers. BANANAS – score!
Can’t wait to dig into my Hungry Bar as a snack later on.
The break is ending – time to listen!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Sounds like a good conference! Can’t wait to hear all about the Sports Nutrition session – I wonder if it’ll be similar to the one at HLS! I love that they served pizza with salad for lunch – yum!!

That pizza looks so good. I wish I had that for lunch instead of my leftovers…
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
PIZZA PARTAYYYYYY!!! yum…now i know what i’m craving for dinner 🙂
Anna S. @ History Running Girl says

That session sounds really interesting!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I love how the nutritionists are eating salad AND pizza for lunch– a great lesson in moderation!

Sports nutrition intrigues me. I love learning about it and I love that they’re constantly discovering new things related to it. So interesting. 😀
Please share your new findings! 😀
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I had a lunch n learn today too! Mine was on financial planning though, which is not nearly as interesting as the sessions you’re in! Your lunch looks great!
Amanda (Eating Up) says
That pizza looks delicious. Gotta love delivery!
Samantha @ Bikini Birthday says
McDonalds sponsored your dietitian’s conference? Hmm. That’s interesting.
Allison K says
I had the same thought.
Kath says
They donated apple slices! C’mon – what’s wrong with that?
Carrie H says
How’d you even know that?
Carrie H says
Oh, I guess I read over it in between those two photos … Interesting thing to comment about …
Clare says
Nobody goes to McDonalds for some “apple slices”. I’ll say it. I would boycott if I knew this. McDonald’s has NO place in a healthy diet. Even in moderation.
emily says
I absolutely, on more than one occasion, have gone into McDonald’s and bought apple slices. (and only apple slices)
Halie says
Dang, I wish my chatting kept me from eating.
dawn hutchins says
Hmm…those sound like much more interesting topics than the lunch n learns I’ve been to and much better food!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
The conference sounds like it’s interesting! Love that you got to “shop” the leftovers. I would have been very excited to get some bananas, too, seeing that I go through them like water.
LizLivingVegan says
Yum! That hungry bar looks delicious! What a fun conference!
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
Those topics sound right up my alley; I wish I could be there!
Marisa @ Loser for Life says
LOL @ your Mom’s comment!
Sounds like a great conference! I’d love to know what you learned in the Sports Nutrition talk, too!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Pizza and cookies- lunch of champions 😉
Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous says
Wow that’s a lot better than the food I had at the bariatric nutrition conference I went to on monday
Hope says
Sounds like it would be really interesting!
I love that they gave you pizza and cookies for lunch 🙂
Joanne says
I’m with you – LOVE the topic of sports nutrition. Just completed a certification course (for my own knowledge base) and thought it was very interesting and extremely helpful in eating correctly for my marathon and other races.
Laughter-Loving Stacy says
Lucky! It would be so cool to go to a health convention or whatever. 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Sounds like an informative and tasty afternoon!
Jasmine @ Eat Move Write says
It’s funny to see RDs eating pizza, but there’s salad in there, too! Great score with the nanas.
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
Sounds like an informative day! I want to learn more about motivational interviewing, especially as it applies to chronic disease and obesity prevention behaviors like eating healthier and being more active.
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
oh my yum – looks tasty!
Rebekah says
Eeks! Eating pizza and cookies at a dietitian’s conference!? Is this an example of what not to eat??
Kath says
There’s nothing wrong with a slice of pizza. You also forgot the salad and fruit. And I think everyone would complain if there was not some kind of dessert option. No need to be so strict with the profession!
Rebekah says
Of course there’s nothing wrong with pizza! And cookies! Love them both. Just seems so opposite at a conference about healthy diets. Surprised me! 🙂
Rebekah says
And, is that the tops of soda bottles I spy? Oh my…
Jessica says
I am surprised at all of the negativity. Do you think that because you are dietitian you have to eat strictly salads for every meal?? I happen to think that Kath ate very healthy and got to enjoy a slice of pizza as a treat. Give her a break.
Jen says
Oh my goodness, people! We dietitians eat all foods, we don’t exclude anything! We are normal people who enjoy cookies and pizza as much as anyone else! Just because those foods are served at an RD conference does not mean that we, as dietitians, are saying, “Go ahead and eat these kinds of foods at every meal and also recommend that your clients/patients do the same!” It’s ONE meal, to be enjoyed in moderation, like all other foods.
stevie says
this is crazy! a dietetic conference and McD’s is sponsoring and they are serving papa john’s pizza..
Clare says
Totally agree. These foods have no place at a dietetic conference. There are so many healthier, lighter, crowd-pleasing options that better represent the way Americans should be eating. If I was a dietitian I wou
Clare says
Oops…was trying to say: I would have been really disappointed by this.
Kjirsten- Balanced Healthy Life says
There’s nothing wrong with pizza! Everything in moderation is key to a healthy body! If you eat pizza one day, I think you just need to eat lighter the rest of the day to make up for it! Nice score on the bananas! : )
Krystina (Organically Me) says
I find it interesting that a nutrition conference is sponsored by McDonalds.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Pizza and salad, my favorite! 🙂
Erika @ Food, Fitness, & Fun says
Sounds like a fun seminar! I’m guessing that was Papa John’s (AKA my favorite) pizza…YUM! Have a nice day! 🙂
Amanda says
Goodness! I think this is a great example of how you can eat healthy but also eat things in moderation and still look/ feel as great as Kath! Its also showing some great options if you are in a bind and have to swing by Papa Johns or Mcdonalds.
Heidi - apples under my bed says
It is such a contentious issue, the whole sponsoring of nutrition events. Some issues here in Australia about that too. At least they gave you fruit! Motivational Interviewing is gold. I would love the sports one too, just for personal interest. I’m not looking at getting into sports dietetics but so many people are, including some close friends. it is one of those ‘highly coveted yet only a few jobs’ areas here in Aus. The pizza looks delicious!
Heidi xo
Hannah says
Love the blend of fun (pizza) with super-healthy (salad and fruit). Best way to fuel yourself for learning, right?
Faith says
It’s not like McDonald’s shipped in Quarter-pounders and French Fries. You could either look at it in a negative light, or you could see it as McDonald’s trying to promote the fact that they are adding nutritious items to their menus. Whether people go to McD’s to eat apple slices is up to personal responsibility. I personally would be disappointed in their sponsorship because I think they are a globalizational catastrophe with no sense of animal welfare. But if the company’s desire is to begin promoting healthier options at their chains, a dietician conference seems like a smart place to start, no?
Clare says
Hmmm…I don’t know. I resent that Mcdonald’s tries to lure my kids to their establishments by touting their happy meal toys and I think this is a similar approach–try to get the dietitians on their side by promoting the fact that they have “Apple Slices!” Again, nobody goes to McD’s for apple slices–they go for a Big Mac or to get their kids a happy meal and make themselves feel better by getting the “healthy option” along side it. The animal welfare and environmental side of things is even worse. Sorry to bang on about this, Kath! The fruit and salads did look lovely!
rachel says
as someone who works in chronic disease research–i’d be interested to hear ab the bariatric surgery and motivational interviewing as well.
i agree that it’s actually a good thing that mcdonalds is sponsoring this. first, it shows that moderation (which is clearly exercised by the attendees) is central–even more important than the content of the food (ie; fat, etc) and second, it shows that mcdonalds has the ADA’s ear.
Kasey says
I actually just ordered a couple books about Sports Nutrition! I can’t wait to hear about the lecture 🙂
Camille says
I’m going to be honest, it seems a little weird that they served pizza, cookies, and fruit sponsored by McDonalds at a Nutrition seminar….?
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I was at a conference today too and they had pizza for lunch as well!
Kath says
Sure, I’d like to see gourmet this and organic that at a conference too, but regardless of the field, conferences are conferences and they rely on sponsors and donations to put food on the table. I was happy to see healthy choices in the mix, and that’s what’s most important.
Caitlin says
I forever appreciate how hard conferences are to run. The end.
Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama says
Pizza on top of greens–interesting! 🙂
Lauren @ [email protected] says
YUM, that Pizza looks good! Hope the conference was good!
misty says
i’d love to hear what your take is on bariatric surgery
notyet100 says
pizza looks too good,..
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
One of the things I’m most looking forward to about becoming a dietician is conferences like that! I bet the sports nutrition session was so interesting!
Rachel says
Papa Johns Pizza and McDonald’s sponsored things? Sure there is nothing wrong with real pizza, it could even be healthy with the right ingredients but Papa Johns?? McDonalds??! Im sorry, i worked at McDonalds in highschool, let me tell you nothing is left alone to just be natural. Those apple slices are so old that they have lost most nutritional value. McDonalds has no place to sit and talk about health when they poison a huge number of people all over the world.
Clare says
Yes! There are no employees in the back slicing up actual apples. They come packaged in a cardboard box. From a factory.
My in laws have type 2 diabetes and heart issues (related). They eat at Mcdonald’s once a week because they think ” in moderation” it’s ok. They think that if they get apple slices with their Quarter Pounders they are exercising “restraint”. There are also no real apples in their home. Sorry. I just have a problem with dietitians that are supposed to be telling people how to eat healthy food, supporting the fast food industry. Wrong.
Kath says
I did not plan the lunch menu.
Leah says
I can’t get over how ridiculous some people are being. McDonalds DOES have some healthy choices, their propaganda kind of sucks, but that has nothing to do with the items on the menu. Stop being judgmental snobs.
Tara says
I honestly don’t see how this is “supporting” the industry… It’s not as if the seminar was entitled “How McDonalds can Improve Your Patient’s Health.” The topics were unrelated to the sponsorship. McDonalds was also a sponsor of the Olympics. Does that mean that all of the athletes support McDonalds or even eat McDonalds? Does it mean that if you watched the Olympics, that you yourself support McDonalds?
I agree, it would be GREAT if every dietetics event could be sponsored by local this and organic that, but unfortunately it just isn’t feasible. Keep in mind, we are a poorly paid profession. It’s not as if this is a bunch of physicians who can afford to shell out of hundreds of dollars for every single continuing education credit. Instead of throwing stones, perhaps you could donate to your local dietetics association and help us eliminate our need for these types of sponsors.
Kori says
Dietitians do not “tell” people how to eat as if they are food Nazis and all that they say is right. Dietitians are people that respect the field of nutrition, the science of how food interacts in the body, and about bringing this information to others in order to better the people of this world. Your in-laws CHOOSE to go to McDonalds. McDonalds is not “poisoning” people because as humans, we have the ability to decide for ourselves. McDonalds just understands the skill of marketing, and apparently a lot of people choose to dine in fast food establishments. It’s time to STOP playing the blame-game and accept our own responsiblity for our health. As a person studying to become a RD, I understand the complexity of translating scientific data into understandable information for the pubic. Furthermore, I truly do NOT see pizza as a horrible food. Whole grain base with lycopene-rich tomato sauce, calcium from the cheese, and vegetables on the top. So what if it is from Papa John’s. They have great options too! If we would all quit thinking in black and white terms, and instead, think about what real food is and how we can enjoy it in better ways, we would all be much better off. Get off of Kath’s back, and realize that she is just blogging about the experience, but did not order the food! Geez.
Emily says
Wow! Such strong opinions! Kath – you’re awesome and I am encouraged by you daily. Keep it up 🙂
