Up with the sun this morning for a 5+ mile run . There was a huge deer in the road that scared us to death when it cloppity-clopped its hooves in the other direction! (Well, it scared me at least!)
Once home, I dove into a big bowl of chewy muesli. Wheatberries are definitely the all-star muesli ingredient:
- 1/4 cup raw oats
- 1/4 cup cooked wheatberries
- 1/4 cup hemp milk
- 1/4 cup Fage
- 1/2 a banana
- 1/3 cup blackberries
This combo made the perfect consistency and between the wheat and black berries, there was TONS of chew.
I didn’t really want to add anything else to it (I don’t think nut butters are good cold) so I packed a little more fuel to have in between my classes (frozen oat bar )
For the record, I had 2 spoonfuls of ice cream last night after dinner. Sometimes it’s just not worth getting a small bowl dirty!!
Off to take test #3 . Then learn about cooking with eggs .
Oh yeah, I heard back from my Chem professor, and he said those extra lab questions were on our test last night "just for fun" and won’t be counted toward our grades. !?!?!?
Becca says
Hmm, your chem professor has a strange view of whats fun ;).
Love the combo, I have wheatberries I just need to make them!
hk says
totally agree- Wheatberries are a winner!

Thanks to you I’ve tried wheat berries and they are such a great addition to oatmeal. So chewy and delicious. I’ve had then in my oatmeal for 3 days straight. I have added them to regular salad but I still need to try making a wheat berry salad.

Good morning Kath,

Morning Kath,
You probably read my post about my first time with wheatberries yesterday, but since others are raving about them this morning – I’ll repeat my love for them as well. 🙂
I just discovered something yummy yesterday and wanted to share it with you and other readers. My friend just bought some new Stonyfield Farms frozen yogurt in java (DELICIOUS!). It’s nonfat and only 100 calories in 1/2 cup. It has all the benefits of yogurt (good bacteria, etc.).
I think they have other flavors – some are Low Fat, some are NONfat.
Just thought I’d share! 🙂

Hi Kath! Great run today, woohoo!
I actually love cold almond butter. Does anybody else? My favorite is when it’s the bottom of the jar and it’s super hard and clumpy. Wierd, I know.
Tina O. says
Your professor has a very strange sense of humor.

5+ mile run? Great job!!! I was debating going to the gym today but your post makes me want to go for a run instead… doubt I’ll see any deer though 🙂
Good luck on the test!
Betsy says
i used to encounter deer all the time when I ran in Cleveland. Not so much in Manhattan.

Anne P says
ha that doesn’t sound like “fun” to me!!

Hey kath. As i said before I am a total addict to your blog! Having been reading it for a few weeks now I think that you would love a cookbook by a woman who is a kind of tv celebrity cook/lifestyle/makeover dietician. I don’t think you guys know about her in the US and she is only well-known in the UK, which is why I am mentioning her. She really advocates healthy living and eating, especially using natural ingredients. From the kind of food you eat, I think you would like her recipes. This is a link to a few of them – one of my favourites is her chickpea burgers and the carob fudge brownies (not in the link). If you wanted, I wouldn’t mind sending you a copy of one of her cookbooks as they are so good and I really think it would be right up your street.
Oh just to mention, she calls herself a doctor but she isn’t actually a medical doctor (there was HUGE controversy over this in the UK).
Good luck with all your studying – I’m really interested to hear about it all – especially the stuff about eating before workouts cos I get up really early every morning, have a bit of fruit then work out before work and then have breakfast. I can’t eat that early in the morning and it makes me feel sick exercising on a full stomach.

Suzanne – I got the Stonyfield cookies and cream once and it was actually really bad! I mean, I threw it out, and I DO NOT throw away ice cream.
I’m going to try the java.
Kate(the teenager) says
deer in the city of charlotte?? strange but cool!!
Scout says
Help!!!! Where can I find wheatberries??? I’m dying to try them. TJs in Ct does not carry them.
Deb says
Kath…please let us know what you learn about EGGS!! I’m partial to egg-whites and love to learn more about their chemistry!!
Jessica…thanks for that chart on grains…very helpful!!

Kath…PS Re. the Blender Express— it’s small compared to “real” blenders! If you get hooked on smoothies, you won’t live to regret that purchase. Plus if you get the whole set (I think a whopping $50ish) , it has smaller containers too (without handles) for making dressings and other attachments for grinding nuts, flax seeds, coffee, whatever. I do hear what you are saying about having too much stuff in the kitchen, but if you do get hooked on smoothies, this would be a life saver! (I just throw all my containers in the dishwasher as I use them)…good luck! 🙂
DaisyMay says
call me a fool but what is muesli again? its just dry oats? Cause i know there is a cereal called that. so this is literally dry oats in milk?
LinZ says
So, this comment comes a day late….about the smoothie situation:
I have an Oster blender that I use for my smoothies. I found this sweet lil thing that has been a true life/time saver:
http://www.amazon.com/Oster-6848-6848-000-950-Blend-N-Go-Cup/dp/B0006ABOD6/ref=pd_bbs_12?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1213799872&sr=8-12
(It is specifically for an Oster blender)
The blender blade and base that holds on the blade attaches to the part of the cup that the lid screws onto, so your only clean up is a quick rinse of the blade and base….and then of course the cup when you’re done enjoying your smoothie.
Might be work checking to see if your blender brand has something like this.

thanks for the heads up on the icky cookie-dough flavor! wow, it must have been pretty bad for you to throw it out! I think you’ll like the java. I hope you do – I’d feel bad if you ended up throwing that one out too. But I doubt it. 🙂

we just polished off a carton of breyer’s neopolitan – soo good!

I’ve had two deer in the past DAY jump right over the hood of my car, scaring me to death (well, almost; I’m still here, thankfully, haha).
Good luck with your test!

Arielle and Suzanne- I love Stoneyfields FF yogurt. The ingredients are short, it has good bacteria, and calcium BUT I do agree the cookies and cream was NOT good. I love the vanilla and chocolate. The chocolate espeically is very rich. So good. It’ crazy to think you can have the whole container (pint or whatever it is) for 400 calories! That is a lot of ice cream. That will barely cover a decent amount of regular ice cream. LOVE IT

Hi all!
Great blog Kath-
I have a question for Kath or anyone….
I’m out of oats!! 🙁 I was thinking of making a breakfast with Bulgur? Has anyone tried this…does it taste good. How do you make it? Thanks!
Justy2003 says
I made muesli once, but didn’t like it nearly as much as my regular hot oats…maybe I’ll give it another try some day…
sammypie-
I’ve never used bulgar for breakfast, but Tina over at Carrotsncake.com has it a lot for breakfast and has lots of different concoctions, so you may want to check out her blog!
rhodeygirl says
ewww! why would the professor DO THAT?!?! I would have been freaking!
Suzanne says
Kelly L. –
ooh, I’ll definitely have to try the vanilla and chocolate next time. have you tried any other flavors? thanks for the info!
tfh says
Um, when I go for my early morning run, a darting squirrel can make me shriek, let alone a deer…it’s the element of surprise, I think. Not that suburban deer aren’t ferocious :). Unrelated question: does anybody know of any organic/rBGH-free ice cream brands that aren’t super-premium? I kind of have the same ice cream philosophy as Kath, except I’m wary when it comes to conventional dairy…any recommendations?

Random question:
Does anyone subscribe to Shape magazine? I have yet to receive my June issue even though it has been on news stands for like 2 weeks or more. My friend who also lives in Texas, but a different city hasn’t received hers either. Just wondering if Texas mail sucks or Shape is having issues in general. Thanks for any insight!
CourtneyS says
Katie, I just checked Shape’s website to see if the newest issue looks familiar (I get way too many magazines!) and I’m pretty sure I got mine in the mail. (Oh, I live in Boston.) You could always give them a call to see what’s what…I hate waiting for magazines!
Kath says
Jessica ,
That’s a great chart- thanks!
sammypie ,
Tina at http://www.carrotsandcake.com has bulgur all the time!! I tried it and prefer the creaminess of oats, but it was still pretty good.
Scout,
You can order them online:
