We lost our longest running employee to a new adventure this month. He had worked the morning sponge and dough shift for over 2 years {and will be missed!} To keep the bread baking, Matt has had to go in at 3 am six days a week for the past 3-4 weeks as we have hired and trained two new employees. Since we were closed this Labor Day, a 2.5 day weekend off was most welcome in our household!
We started Friday off with a beer tasting at Champion
Nadjeeb {of the new Flora Artisanal Cheese shop!} was there pairing cheese with pints, so we had some wonderful cow’s milk cheese with the Missile IPA.
M sipping his pint of water
After that delicious adventure, we headed home and mixed together leftovers for dinner, which is becoming our Friday night tradition
Herby rice, shredded chicken, tomatoes, cheese and greens
Another Friday night tradition: a documentary. This time National Geographic’s Amazing Planet. The volcano episode was SCARY!
Saturday morning breakfast: toast with butter, banana + sunbutter, egg and raspberries.
We walked to the market where we met Matt after his shift and marveled over The Juice Laundry’s rainbow
After morning nap, we decided to head out to lunch and chose Bizou.
“Hi y’all”
I had a flounder salad with grilled romas and goat cheese and Matt had a steak blue cheese salad. Both were great.
Saturday was the first UVA football game, and I just happened to be wearing navy and orange like everyone else on the downtown mall!!
Our walk took us to Shenanigan’s, where we bought some first birthday gifts for our guy, and then to Pearl’s Cupcake Shoppe because I hadn’t been in to see the selection yet. They have some wild and fun flavors!
We shared this crazy combo of chocolate stout cake with bacon throughout – including the frosting. It was quite decadent but gone in 60 seconds!
Since we were in cupcake land, we also stopped into Sweet Haus because I insisted that Matt try the cookie dough frosting. Just LOOK at it! My new favorite. These guys were minis.
After our long, hot walk home we rested, read and some of us napped. I finished this book, which I really enjoyed although I thought it was too predictable. I love anything set on an island! I just downloaded The Violets of March to my Kindle app too. I hear it’s very good.
Before dinner, Mazen got his first haircut! Appropriate for First Birthday Week.
It went quite well with Matt snipping and me making funny faces. So long mullet!
Saturday night we went to a friend’s house for a par-tay. No photos taken, just burgers, pumpkin beer and rum cake consumed!
Sunday morning, after pancakes and peaches, we tidied the house before it was taken over by babies.
I rearranged some furniture…
Here
And here
Then the babies had at it ; )
We had brunch on the porch with Sarah, John and Sylvia
Sunday night we had some new friends over for pizza, salad and more baby playing
I defrosted some of Brittany’s Isaac’s mom’s chocolate chip cake from their visit for dessert, and it was just as good as before. Need that recipe!
After quite the packed Saturday and Sunday, we took it easy on Monday. No laundry to do or parties to host. Only this blog post to write and a simple day at home.
Except for when I was attacked by this praying mantis {seriously, it fell on my head}
Hope you all had great long weekends!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Looks like a great long weekend! And ohhh my, those cookie dough frosted cupcakes – right up my alley!
David @ From Ballparks to BBQ says
I’ve walked by Bizou a few times and everything always looks so good. Looking forward to trying it sometime.
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
What a lovely long weekend! Your meals look delicious as usual. Sorry to hear about the praying mantis attack! I would not handle that well.
Jackie says
Aw what a nice weekend!!! Mazen is getting so big!
Lynn @ the actor's diet says
So grateful for long weekends! If you need any future doc recommendations we watch a lot of them (my husbands twitter handle is @filmingdocs)
Britta says
Oh THOSE cupcakes look amazing. Bacon on top of a cupcake?! Wowza, that would be a first for me but I am positive it was incredible. Looks like you had a wonderful weekend! I am also in love with your home, just beautiful.
Lisa @bitesforbabies says
I know they have nothing to do with islands but have you ever read Khaled Hosseini’s books? AMAZING!
Elisabeth says
I LOVE Sarah Jio’s books! You also should read The Last Camellia & Blackberry Winter. Her fifth one comes out in Nov. – Morning Glory – and I can’t wait 🙂
K says
Does Mazen eat without a bib? My little one is just a few weeks older and I feel like I see other kids their age also eating without bibs…but we would have such a mess on our hands! I guess she likes to wear her meal as much as eat it!
KathEats says
He does on occasion – if the food isn’t that messy he doesn’t really need one
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
Looks like a great weekend! Especially the IPA & Cheese pairing — YUM!
Christine@ Apple of My Eye says
Mhmm great pics of your food and family! I always look up to your photography and am looking forward to improving mine :). You look gorgeous (as always)!
beth says
Did you save a lock of hair? Is it blond, brown, or red? hard to tell
KathEats says
We didn’t – probably should have! I’d call it dirty blonde?
Emily @ Life on Food says
I have started making two big dinners a week. We can pretty much live off of that the rest of the days. Takes for some creativeness but so much easier than a new meal every night!
Janelle says
Haha. I love the empty room… and then the babies had at it. 🙂
Alex @ Kenzie Life says
I love your porch! Every time you post pictures of it I get so excited because I want one so badly! I can’t believe Mazen is almost one! Time flies! And that cookie dough frosting looks absolutely amazing and probably goes well with just about anything!
cathy says
I’ll read anything set in England. 🙂
Lauren @ The Highlands Life says
That brunch looks awesome!! So fun!
And you gotta love those stout beers. Can I still claim them for milk supply goodness even though my babe is 11 months old?! 🙂
Patricia says
Beautiful pictures! Your friends must love coming over to enjoy your lovely home and porch — not to mention all the delectable goodies you seem to serve! My mouth is watering just looking at that crunchy cheese toast — pepper jack is my very favorite cheese. And that pizza…yum! It’s so smart of you to freeze leftover cake for a later time. In my house, we rarely have much dessert left, for the freezer or anything else! 🙂
Meagan says
Hey Kath! I am looking for a running watch (finally, yay!). I know you have one of the Garmins, and I was wondering if you would recommend it? Have you been happy with it? Thanks 🙂
KathEats says
I have this one, which I’ve had for years, and I’ve loved it but I’d like something new (it has also been discontinued). I’m thinking about getting this one for my birthday, although I hear it’s smaller screen limits what you can see at a glance.
Chelsea @BigBitesLittleBudget says
Aren’t long weekends just the best! It was so nice to be able to catch up on some things that have been getting neglected (the garden and laundry). I love the school colors. College football season is the best!
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Mazen is officially the spitting image of you!! Must check out the book links, I’m in need of a good getaway type easy read!
Anna @ Fitness à la Anna says
Sounds like you had a well-deserved weekend off! I have yet to try a bacon dessert, but that cupcake looks delish!
Katie @ Live Half Full says
Violets of March is my favorite Sarah Jio book- enjoy!!!

Your house looks like a magazine. Can I come over?
KathEats says
🙂 We were supposed to have a big slumber party here July 26!
Angela says
Kath, you look great! You’ve done some writing about your journey back to pre-baby shape and what your eating/ doing and it’s working for you. You look fantastic! And your weekend looks like a wonderful time of family, fun, and food! I keep reading hoping that your love of greens will rub off on me… I’m still working on that!
leanne says
Hi Kath, Just wanted to say after my negative feedback about the spate of sponsored posts- the last few posts you have done feel so much more real and are so much more enjoyable to read. I am not a big fan of advertising at the best of times unless done in a really creative and interesting way- so ‘normal posts’ ( if that makes sense) are what i read blogs for. Please keep it up, real life is much more interesting than the latest car gadget 🙂 , le
Marissa@ohhhsolovely says
what a nice well rounded weekend. you inspired me to have more gatherings including “new” friends, not just the usual gang! a cupcake with cookie dough frosting sounds like heaven right now!

KathEats says
Fun to meet you too! Hope the rest of your stay was fabulous!

Kath, I gotta say, sometimes I read your blogs just to see what outfits your wore during the week! The food is also a great bonus;) I love how you always were great colors. Can I ask, where do you do your clothing/jewelry shopping?
KathEats says
Ha, I am so not a fashionista! I shop mostly at LOFT and some at Old Navy, GAP, Banana. My colored shorts are all from LOFT!
Kathryn @ Mamacado says
awww, love the photo of the back of Mazen’s head! So sweet. My Little Gal who is about his age also has a “mullet” but I’m not cutting it since she’s a girl! hoping it grows out nicely 🙂
Kevie says
Hey Kath,
The beer sampler looks too good. I’m excited for fall because of the heavier and flavorful beer. The cupcakes look amazing, too. Beer and cupcakes, a few of my favorite things (not together). I also am loving the blue run in your porch/sun room, where did you get it from?
KathEats says
It’s from overstock.com.
Anne Weber-Falk says
Here is a great documentary for the two of you. Different from your usual. Holes in my Shoes. It will make you laugh, cry, smile and leave you feeling good. Watch this!
KathEats says
That does look great!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I love the colors in your living room. It’s so soothing and calming. I think I would stay curled up on that sofa reading non-stop! 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Looks like such a fun weekend! And seriously that mini cupcake looks amazing (not the bacon one…bleh!)!
J says
Have you ever tried the chocolate covered bacon at Bluegrass Grill. I finally bit the bullet and tried a bite, and it was strangely addicting! My son on the other hand said he would have just preferred the bacon next time!
KathEats says
I haven’t! We haven’t been there in ages and need to return
kristen @ verbs and vignettes says
