Emily and I had our final early morning run today. 5.66 miles at 7AM. They were wonderful. We didn’t fun fast – just for enjoyment. I will miss her!!
Did I mention I’m also running in a 4 mile race on Saturday!?
I put Gatorade (half a small bottle) in my Camelbak and it made such a difference in hunger. I didn’t have that “my stomach is folding in on itself” feeling while I showered.
And it gave me time to make some long-lost oats!!
My taste for oatmeal is as stong as ever, but since I haven’t had my own kitchen, I have been doing less time-intensive breakfasts. These reminded me how good oatmeal is!
- 1/3 cup oats, milk, water
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- Half banana
- Pinch salt
- Splash vanilla, cinnamon
- 1/3 cup blackberries, stirred in at end
- Crumbled Great Harvest Apple Streusel muffin (!!)
- TJ’s Sunflower Butter (my new FAV!!!)
Karen’s coffee is STA-RONG

What a good short summary of your blog. I think it’s cute your mom told your grandmom way back then. My grandmother has no clue what’s even on the internet, but she knows I takes pictures of my food and can cook.

Ha– so funny how HUGE the blog has gotten from such a simple idea, right?

Kath says
I just keep them in a tupperware in a cabinet

Wow that *almost* makes me want a piping hot bowl in the morning. Unfortunately, I don’t want hot oats during the summer months… makes me hot thinking about it. Looks delish though.

Julz @ freshman 5k says
That pinch of salt really helps oatmeal. Yours looks delicious!!
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
Yep, I’m feeling the hot oats love too and had a nice warm bowl thins morning. It was perfect! I always love how ‘erfect’ America looks with it’s spotless sidewalks and manicured lawns. I can’t believe you’ve been blogging for nearly 3 years – that’s awesome!!
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
That was obviously supposed to read ‘perfect’ – must leanr to proofread!!
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
Learn even – lol!
tanyasdaily says
Your breakfast looks delicious!
Heather says
What a great email!
I lose my taste for hot oatmeal in the summer – hot everything – tea too!
Great run this morning and good luck with your race this weekend.
Kate says
Just discovered TJ’s sunflower seed butter and I’m now obsessed. Had it drizzled on my chia oats this morning!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Yay, for working out with friends! The oats look delcious! Have a great one Kath!
Nelly says
Muffins in oatmeal! O.o That looks delicious, actually…
When I was a wee one clamoring for my breakfast and my mama was tired, she’d crumble up cornbread, drizzle some honey on it and then pour warm milk over the whole thing. That is what this reminds me of. Thank you for the momentary unexpected reversion to childhood 🙂
Caitlyn @ A Spoonful of Life says
Morning runs are my favorite! A great way to get up and start the day. You’re muffin on oats looks splendid…must try!
Ann @ Appalachain Appetites says
Love the old email. Look how far you’ve come!
Ellen says
Those oats looks A-MAH-ZING! I know how you feel, I don’t have oats or overnight oats nearly as often as I would like to and it’s tres tres sad. I can’t wait for the weekend so that they can make an appearance in my breakfast bowl.
af @ .the food. says
thought you and matt might be able to appreciate these (although like me, it doesnt seem that matt leaves any beer half-full)
http://www.beersavers.com/
Kath says
Very neat – but you’re right, a beer would never go undrank. [Is that a word?]
af @ .the food. says
not gonna lie, i toyed with the word “undrank” and re-worded my sentence to accommodate my lack of knowing if it was actually a word…haha
abbi says
Have fun at your race! Those oats look yummy!
emily says
I love that e-mail, my grandma reads my blog too! She hasn’t quite figured out how to comment yet, and last time I visited she called in advance to ask if she should go to the grocery store because she only had “normal food,” but she loves it! 😀
Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) says
Haha, that note is so funny! And just look at you now and all you’ve accomplished! Plus, you’ve inspired so many people to create their own food blogs! How awesome is that?!
Sarah says
Kath, you turned me on to flavored nut butters and now I can’t get enough! Currently obsessed with Peanut Butter & Co.’s White Chocolate Wonderful. SO good!! Do you order most of yours online or do you find them in stores?
Kath says
Or in stores. Most are from the companies themselves though.
Chelsey says
ooo those oats look so good! I love tj’s sunflower butter – I have a jar open right now!
I love the note form your mom to your grandma – so cute!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Haha, that reminds me of how my parents have been shopping around my blog to family members. I just started a month ago and they are telling everyone who will listen 😀 That oatmeal looks amazing! I like the concept of a crumbled muffin. Basically because I love muffins. haha Will have to try that next time!
sweetersalt says
I hated on gatorade for a long time, but the stuff does help when you’re working out hard / sweating a lot. Not to mention, guzzling some before going to bed after drinking = no hangover. Just sayin’!
Jasmine @ Eat Move Write says
lol. That note is great! What’s amazing is that your grandmother has email. It always stuns me because my family is so non-technological. I’m the only one that can navigate the web really.
I love your oatmeal, but for some reason I simply cannot eat oatmeal in the summer. It would need to be storming or raining or something.
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete.wordpress.com says
That note is so adorable. I can see my mom sending that to her friends/family as well! “latest thing” sounds like it wouldn’t last. I’m so glad you kept up with this, I love your blog!
Dorry says
HOW COOL to look back at 3 years ago in that email from your mom. Wow! You inspire us, Kath.
Callie says
I’m drooling over that breakfast! 🙂
That’s so cool that you found that email. 3 years ago seems so long…
Sarah Dussault says
I have never tried the sunflower butter but I love anything sold at Trader Joe’s so I’m definitely going to try it next time! I think Trader Joe’s can save their money on PR because all us bloggers do a heck of alot for them because they are so amazing.
Carrie says
Mmmm, strong coffee. Whenever my husband makes coffee at his office, his coworkers tell him that he’s gonna kill them. He likes it strong.
Though this morning we goofed and we both put water in the coffee maker, meaning we produce 10 cups of coffee rather than 4-5. It was basically just water.
Annie@stronghealthyfit says
That email is hilarious.
Mom says
I was actually helping my mom clean out her inbox, which hadn’t been emptied in four years, and I found it. Fun!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
What a cute email…love it! 😀
And great job on the run! The enjoyable runs that aren’t meant for speed are usually the most enjoyable ones, in my opinion. 😀
Katelyn says
LOVE the e-mail your Mom sent to you G-ma, so cute.
Our kitchen is being re-finished, I totally understand how frustrating it is to not cook/eat like you are used to. Hang in there!
janna @ janna's keeping it real says
that note from your mom is too cute!
that oatmeal looks A-MAZ-ING! i feel like the addition of the muffin sent it over the top, no? i really should try that, soon!
elaine! says
Hey, I’m in the market for a hydration pack… which one do you have? I seem to remember you having the Nathan one. I’ve heard that the Nathan pack is super comfortable, but the bladder isn’t as great as a Camelbak bladder. I’ve been wondering if it’s possible and/or worth it to get the Nathan pack and slip a Camelbak bladder into it.
Anyway, if you have any insights on hydration packs, I’d love to hear it!! 😀
Kath says
I have the Camelbak Charm. I like it a lot!
elaine! says
Thanks!!
Simply Life says

That email from your mom is hilarious….’kath’s latest thing’ who knew kath’s latest thing would become one of her biggest things!
Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear says
Haha, I bet your mum could have not imagined what a success “your latest thing” would become 🙂
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Haha that note is so funny! She makes your blog seem so trivial, but look what it turned into!
I haven’t had oats in ages either! I think I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow now!
Meagan says
I still love that bowl!
