Now that I have 2 hours back in my life, and now that I don’t have to be at work until 9AM, I’m switching back to AM workouts. Super excited to have my evenings back! This works so much better with Matt’s schedule too since he’s gone in the mornings and wants to eat dinner early at 6 so he can get off to bed. I should be sticking with this schedule for the next 2 months and then things might change again when I move onto the hospital, which has an earlier start.
I started the day with some much-needed YOGA at 5:30AM! I woke up pretty stiff in the joints from my run yesterday. It’s funny how the first 15 minutes of yoga you think that you’ll never work out the kinks. But by the end of 45 minutes to an hour, everything is moving again. I felt EONS better after the end of my 60 minute YogaDownload Dave Farmar Vinyasa for Beginners. This is a great class to start with if you are new to Vinyassa or Dave Farmer style.
I laid on one of Emily’s old yoga mats during our interval workout last week and had forgotten how thin they were. Love the Aurorae mat I was sent to review. It’s thick and the little balls make a great non-stick and cushiony base.
When I headed back up to shower, I woke up sleeping beauty for breakfast. Since we were both grumps yesterday morning, he made me breakfast today for Valentine’s 🙂
Perrrrfect pumpkin!!!
Matt’s Mix (with a little advice from moi 🙂 )
- 1/3 cup oats, vanilla soy milk, water, pinch salt
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 cup pumpkin stirred in at end
- TJ’s trail mix
- Justin’s Maple Almond Butter
- Drizzle maple syrup
Love how the chocolate bits from the trail mix melt right into the oats!
I spy…with my little eye….

A few many weeks ago I had a videographer come to my house from Open Sky to record some videos for my store. They went up this weekend – including one on the main page. Look for the new thumbnail to indicate a video.
- Wheatberries
- Cali bowls
- Chia seeds
- French press
- Chop Chop Bamboo
- And GARMIN + POLAR (<— I know you guys have been asking for this for ages!)
Fun times!
Have a WONDERFUL DAY!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Yoga + Oats + Coffee = perfect morning!
Jenn @ Livewellfit says
Such cool Open Sky clips. I’m really enjoying that site- such a cool concept.
I have decided to try a yoga podcast for the first time this week! I have very little to no exposure to yoga but I feel that my body and muscles would really appreciate it. 🙂
Marisa (Loser for Life) says
I am loving YogaDownload! So far, I have only tried the free 20 minute classes. I really liked the Yoga for Weight Loss and was surprised at how hard it was for me! I never really thought of yoga as a “workout”, but whew, it sure is!
Andrea says
Great Open Sky segments! I love how your oats look this morning- extra orangey and I think the red in the trail mix really adds a pop of color! Enjoy your day!!
Nicole, RD says
9am start? Nice! During my dietetic internship I swear my latest start was 8am and the hospital was definitely 7am! Enjoy it!
Off to check out the videos now!
Cole says
Having more time in the morning is the best thing ever.
Daniel says
Glad to hear you have your mornings back – I don’t know what I’d do without the extra time in the AM to get my work out in (probably just break up my running into two 15-minute sessions).
Your oats always look phenomenal~ makes me hungry everytime I visit the blog, haha.
I just found a local Coop (It’s like a Whole Foods that’s a mile from my dorm!!!) that sells chia seeds and bought a small bag to try them, and I was wondering if you let them soak a bit before you put them in your oatmeal / SIAB’s or if you just toss them in as they are.
And do you use Greek or regular yogurt in your overnight oats / SIABs?
Thanks in advance, have a great day!
Kath says
I just toss the chias in, but I bet a short soak would help the texture thicken some.
I use greek yogurt all the time!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
I am the same way with yoga – at first I feel like I am so tight and never going to relax. Then it’s over and I feel great!
megan says
every time you do yoga in the morning, I am inspired to try it. I’m always sore and I feel like yoga could really help. I just need a good place to start!
Karla says
I haven’t gotten into yoga. Everyone raves about it but I have a hard time liking it. Maybe I need to try it more. I bet a yoga mat would make my life easier too 🙂
Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com says
HAHA 3RD TIME! I never do it, but I was different today and had squash in my oatmeal (my pumpkin equivilant), and you do it too! Oh my. Love the toppings 🙂
Yoga is SO perfect after a long run, on the recovery day. All the stretching etc does wonders for the muscles 🙂
Have a good day!
Heather says
I am so jealous! I have to be at work right after 7. I would love to workout in the AM but I would have to get up at 4:30 and thats just not happening. Oh the things I could do if I didn’t have to leave my house till 8:30 lol!
have a great day!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Starting the morning with yoga is such a great idea…and so something that I don’t do as much as I should!
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
Yum oats on a cold morning! Just made a big bowl of steel-cut and it really cuts through the bitter cold outside. Is it spring yet? 😉
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I’m so happy to see that you are making the most of your already habit of getting up early. I try to do the same when I don’t have to get up.
GurlOnA"Diet" says
i know exactly what you mean- first few minutes of stretching the day after intense cardio make me wanna cry…but i feel so much better!

Estela @ Weekly Bite says
How was yoga with the space heater? How hot did it get? Just curious because I do hot yoga.
Kath says
It was kind of hot blowing in my face, but it was better than nothing!
Rose-Anne says
“Day-after” yoga is the best! I’m looking forward to mine later today. And that Dave Farmar…he’s by far my favorite yoga instructor. I would love to take a live, in-person class with him.
Marisa, I haven’t done the yoga for weight-loss session, but you are inspiring me to try it! 🙂 Have you tried Crunch’s Fat-Burning Yoga video (or DVD)? That’s one of my old favorites–it keeps you moving through all sorts of great poses.
Have a great day, lovelies!
Stacey says
Monday is my yoga day too! Isn’t having time in the mornings the BEST?! Last night my teacher e-mailed me and told me not to come to class until 10:30 ! Woot woot…now I am sipping my coffee, in a non-rushed sort of way. It feels great!
Becky says
I love yoga and go to class during the week, but for some reason I am afraid to do it at home….weird, right? But now I’m inspired and might just have to unroll the mat!
Tiffany says

Nutritious Foodie says
I really enjoy Yoga but haven’t tried it at home yet… I should really give it a try.

Wow, maybe I should try some early morning yoga? I’m sure it’s a really good way to start the day 🙂
marla {family fresh cooking} says
The oats look so great….better yet that your honey made ’em for you.
Morning workouts are the best when you can fit them in!
Retrokali says
Are you using the space heater to warm up your muscles quicker? Or is it just cold in the room? 🙂 I am always freezing until I get moving.
I did yoga this morning at 5 also, LOVE IT!
Kath says
Both!
Kaite@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle says
Enjoy your monrings, I look forward to hearing about your rotation too!
Jil says
I agree, at the beginning of any yoga sesh I always feels so rusty and feel like nothing will feel in sync…however, you’re right by the end of it, everything is just flowing. I think I need to remind myself of that every time I try and talk myself out of a workout. haha
Salah@myhealthiestlifestyle says
Yoga is one of the best ways to welcome the morning/day in!! I hope you both had a great Valentines Day!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says

Yummm! I think some pumpkin oats will be blessing my tummy tomorrow morning. 🙂
Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind says
Ahhhh early mornings…luuuurve them so much.
The pumpkin oats look DELICIOUS. No pumpkin to be found in my parts – GRRR!
Pretty sure I want EVERYTHING in your Open Sky store! 😉
Christie @ Honoring Health says
Just wanted to mention that Dave Farmar is a certified Baron Baptiste Power Vinyasa instructor so that is the style he teaches. If you (and your readers) enjoy Dave Farmar, you would probably like going to a certified Baron Baptiste Studio or doing Baron Baptiste DVD’s.
Run Sarah says
I got a good workout in this AM as I dont have to be at work until later — best feeling ever!

Lauri says
I loooove how crisp your pics are! I’m hoping to get a new camera with our tax return!!! I just posted our V-Day dinner, so check it out if you get a chance 😉 Have a Happy Monday!!
Stephanie says
I love my Aurorae mat as well! Seriously the best one I’ve tried, so thick and cushiony & love the focal point. Have you tried their rosin bags yet? If you have any sweaty hands/feet this is amazing to keep you from slipping 🙂
Ally (Exercise and Pies) says
I love how you have your own space heater by your yoga mat!
I’m thinking of downloading some yoga podcasts but since I haven’t been to a class in 1.5 (?) years does anyone know if it would be better to just get a DVD until I can get a flow on my own?
Kath says
Just refresh yourself with a PDF of the poses 🙂 You’ll be able to groove right back in!
Tara says
Thanks for the yoga suggestions. I’m always looking for good ones on that website.
Tara says
PS. I started a new rotation and it’s at a later time. Wonderful feeling.
Ash @ Good Taste. Healthy Me says
I love early morning workouts. Getting it out of the way first thing is the best feeling!
Hannah says
Do you notice any difference in texture when you use a frozen rather than fresh banana? Or does it not matter? It definitely looks as good!
Kath says
No texture difference!
Leena says
I love pumpkin oats! I had them this morning today too, but they were from the crock pot! OMG they were delicious! Have you ever tried crock pot oats?
They’re so easy – all you have to do it put the steel-cut oats in the crock pot overnight, and in the morning you have the most creamy, and delicious oats ever!!! Then, I just mix whatever I want into them, and pop them in the microwave for about 30 seconds just to get them nice and hot!
I highly recommend trying it! They were probably the best oats I’ve ever had, and they were so easy!
Kath says
I don’t really care for steel cut oats, but I do think crockpot would be fun when we have company or a big group sometime.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i’m a morning workout person too – though not a 5:30 am one!!!
Carolyn says
I seriously have to find time to bring yoga back into my routine.
jessica says
Hi Kath! Do you know what the name of that TJ’s Trail Mix is? It looks delicious and perfect over oats!
Kath says
I do but there is a roach in my kitchen and I cannot enter it right now. Please ask me again in 48 hours!
jessica says
Eek! Will do! Hope it goes away!
Kim Nixon says
I miss OATS! Oops did I shout? Recently diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance and may find ut this week that I have Celiac (biopsies taken last week) has me avoiding even gluten-free oats for a year. Kath please help me come up with a solution for a busy morning. I want oatmeal and creamy rice just does not cut-it. I am anemic as heck. We are not sure on my other nutritional levels, yet. I am avoiding eggs and dairy. I can tolerate soy but due to my age am alternating with almond, rice, and soy milk as not to get too much soy. If you can spare anytime I would so appreciate it. I will give props on twitter, facebook, and my blogs www.runningmarquette.com and createwithkim.com
Kath says
What about some of the ancient grains? Millet + amaranth porridge? Toasted quinoa?
Kim Nixon says
I will give it a try! Perhaps this weekend.
Tammy @ Defining Wellness says
Very professional videos! Nicely done!
Ashley says
Your videos are lovely!! Thanks for the great info! I would have needed cue cards 😉 Whoa..Matt is starting to look like a professional oat maker!!
