Morning!
I slept well at my hotel – although I kept waking up and thinking it was morning at all hours of the night!
I was wide awake at 7 and had an hour before I met Caronae for a run! We ran together in January and she was the only one on my NYC email list who wanted to run with me again! Made it simple though 🙂
I went down to get a swig of OJ from the breakfast area (score for a hotel with free breakfast!) and had a little of that with some water while I got dressed for my run. I pretended I live in a super swanky NYC apt full time!
We set out to run up to Central Park and around at 8 and ran roughly 6 miles (maybe 5.5?) through the park and up and down 5th and 6th ave. So much fun!
When I returned to the hotel I was totally ready for breakfast but I did not want to eat instant oats when I have a whole city of foods and better atmosphere to see!
I snacked on half an Alliebar to tide me over while I showered and checked out of the hotel.
Plus a few swigs of my coconut elixir
I set out on foot at 10AM in search of a quintessential NYC cozy coffee shop to get some coffee and breakfast and blog.
I totally felt like a local walking around this city by myself!
My bites held me over till breakfast really well – but I was getting hungry! I also had to lug my computer with me. So I didn’t get very far without finding anything that fit the bill. I settled on a Pret A Manger, which wasn’t a bad choice! I can’t believe how healthy-friendly this city is! Organic, whole foods on every corner! Also, wifi! SCORE!
I’ve also noticed the calorie counts on the menus!!!! At first I was totally taken by surprise when I saw them in some of the fancy cafes. They just seemed out of place. But I have to say, they are totally, totally helpful and I think for a world that doesn’t understand calorie density, they will probably help more than they might harm. A loaded issue for sure though.
I almost got a scone. And I also almost got oatmeal. But I settled on a yogurt + granola parfait when I saw the yogurt was low-fat, plain and LOCAL!
I chose the banana honey and left most of the goo on the bottom. The granola (which was likely homemade) was awesome!!! The portion was also just right too.
Plus a cappuccino. I just love steamed milk! [Also noticed that they have Organic Valley butter here!!!]
Hunger is now gone!
About to pack up and set out by foot to do some SHOPPING before the KERF lunch at 12:30. My experience in NYC is always in 24 hour increments and I never have time for shopping or just leisure so I was thrilled to be able to "live" NYC this morning 🙂
Not sure if I’ll be able to blog at the airport, but I’ll see you soon!

I’m so jealous!! What a great way to start the day!!! Run in Central Park, breakie at a cool cafe….. So great!!!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
What a lovely place to run! It’s literally my dream, to run through NYC…and then go and get breakfast like a local, gosh you lucky woman!! I am INCREDIBLY jealous! I hope you have a fab lunch 🙂
And I love you call those bars ‘alliebars’ :p
Diana says
Hmmm, that breakfast looks good! Love yogurt 🙂
Also, I think it’s awesome that there are calorie counts on the menus.
Ahhhhh New York..
Lana says
Fun to live NYC through you!
Kath, I totally am with you on the foam rolling. I love it too and it helps my muscles so much. I also do “foot rolling” using a little wooden contraption, but a golf ball works just as well. You get a really, really great foot massage as you slowly add more pressure. My brother does it with frozen golf balls, but that is too much for me. Ever tried this method? I recommend it! : )
WARTS.
Off topic I know, but I think I picked one up from the gym. Does anyone know of a eco-friendly, toxin-free way to rid onself of warts?!! Please help!
Kath says
LOL. I don’t have any wart solutions for you 🙁
Jenny says
Haha, I love walking around up North – seems so fancy compared to down South:)

I am moving to New York in the fall for school and reading your posts is getting me really excited! I can’t wait to be able to run in the park and get breakfast at a cute coffee shop, ahhh!

I knew menu calorie counts were being discussed but I didn’t know they actually implemented it!

Hi Kath!
Looks like a great time in NYC!
I’m having trouble figuring out if you have a contact email on here, so I’ll just write in your comments section, hope that’s ok!
I’ve been a fan for a long time, and I just started up a blog of my own at http://operagirlcooks.com. I’d love to be on your blogroll.
Let me know, and thanks for your time!

I had a similar experipence with waking up in my hostel the night before last – except it turned out that it *was* morning and I’d forgotten to switch my alarm clock to “on” and my roommates were late-sleeper-in-ers! Whoops!
I wish you were staying in NY longer… so that I’d have more food recommendations, and also so that I could’ve met up with you like you suggested. Sadness!!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i’ve never eaten at pret a manger but when i lived in nyc i used to always go there to pee!
Janna says
Glad you got to enjoy the city a bit. I would definitely have come for that run if I was back in time!
You always find these cute places in NYC that I would never think of going even though I live there! I think I have to explore my city more 🙂

Kath-
How do you choose a hotel when going to NYC? I’m thinking about going on vacation in July and need a not-so-expensive hotel in Manhattan, but I don’t even know where to begin. The city is just SO big!
Kath says
I have no idea!! Open Sky booked this one for me. It was the Fairfield Inn + Suites on 37th and was teeny tiny but very nice.
caronae says
Had such fun on our run! And thanks for the link — I have more page views right now than I usually have in like, a month!

Next time you are in NYC you should try Joe Coffee…. it has the most amazing coffee and espresso drinks. You should also try running down by the Hudson River… you can run and then lay on the grass with the most amazing breeze from the river. You can email me… I have a great list of restaurants that only use local produce!!! Hope you come again soon.
Kath says
Got Joe Coffee on my list!
Annie@stronghealthyfit says
I visited my brother in NYC in January and noticed the calorie info. on menus too. I’ve since found out that NY made it a law to display certain nutrition info on menus in restaurants, and it will soon be happening nation-wide. I don’t know where I stand on the issue, there are so many pros and cons.

I love NY! I love walking every where. It just feels so good! By the way, I made a version of your egg white oatmeal pancakes…so delicious! I used oat bran and whipped the egg whites to add some volume. Really gave that baby a lift! I also did an apple peanut butter compote on top, wow, I was in heaven! On a different note, I won some Crofters through a give away they had the other day and that stuff is so good! Thanks for turning me on to it!

That’s so interesting to hear that calorie counts are being implemented!! I’m not sure if it will really make a huge difference (especially since calorie counts tend to be way off anyways,) but you never know! 😀
