It’s a beautiful morning here – sunny but a little chilly. I have the doors open to hear the birds chirping but a sweatshirt on to keep me warm!
I was in the mood for something light this morning (gee, I wonder why!). I decided on greek yogurt + hemp milk + TJ cereal + banana + strawberries.
Plus coffee 🙂 I have really turned into such a coffee lover. But I think it’s this Fresh Market Spring Blend more than anything else.
This breakfast was about 375 kcal, 17 grams fiber and 18 grams protein. I’m missing my healthy fats (PB just didn’t seem to go with this) so based on experience I should be able to get at least 3 hours out of this bowl – we shall see!
Today’s Agenda:
- Review Chemistry
- Do Stats
- Study Physiology Lab Exam
(Blah!!)
Plus:
- Physical Activity (TBD based on mood)
- Clean the kitchen floor on my hands and knees
- Scratch original dinner plan and eat leftovers for lunch and dinner
Hope you all have a Sensational Sunday!

Yum yum! Strawberries are a welcome addition to cereal anyday.
Good luck on all that work you have to do today!

It seems like we always experience opposite weather conditions – it’s gloomy and “sun-free” here today! Enjoy the gorgeous weather for me, please :0)
I love adding fresh strawberries to oatmeal, granola, etc. – dried strawberries are great as well!
Sounds like you have a lot to do today, but I know that you’ll get it done. Hope your Sunday goes well! :0)

Wow, sounds like a busy day but you always seem to be so productive so I’m sure you’ll get it all done!
That’s one of my favourite summery breakfasts! Sometimes I sprinkle in some granola too for crunch 🙂

Chilly morning here too, it sure seems like we’re geographically close, but I’m over near San Fran. I never used to like coffee either, then I was introduced to the cafe au lait. My mother used to make these for us (decaf) in tall glasses. Basically, you make a shot or two of espresso (or use this awesome new device, “AeroPress”) and fill the rest of the glass with milk, but I use vanilla soymilk because it just tastes so darn good. I have these every morning with one square of dark chocolate, it’s probably my favorite “meal” of the day.

Yum! I just had strawberries in my oatmeal today
–one of my favorites!
If you don’t mind, I just had a couple of questions. Anybody’s welcome to chime in! I’ve been steadily gaining for the past year and am now up 15 pounds, which is really about 20 pounds over where I’d like to be. I’m pretty good with exercise–I commute on bike and go to the gym 3-4 days per week, but I keep coming up with excuses as to why I’m not tackling overeating right now. Lately it’s because “I’m stressed and finals are coming up” and “It’ll be easier in summer,” but I know in my heart that I have to learn to eat consistently well regardless of what’s going on (aka, learn to not stress/emotional eat). I’m just stuck as to where to start! I’m really wary of diets, but I also have trouble just eating smaller portions of “normal” foods. What do I do? How do I start?
Beyond that, do you (or anybody who tracks calories) ever resent it? I know tracking calories is great for making sure you don’t overeat, but sometimes it just seems like too much of a hassle and I want to learn to eat intuitively instead of imposing an outside guide. How do you make tracking calories easier or less painful?
Last question! What about sugar? I’ve been identified as a baker for a long, long time and it’s hard for me not to be the one to bring dessert to a gathering or to turn to baking when I need comfort. Anybody have advice as to how to break this? Any advice on sugar would be appreciated!
Sorry this got so long! I’m just feeling a little lost on what I should do. I know I need to establish healthy habits now, before my weight and habits start negatively affecting my healthy. Thank you so much to anybody who responds!

Kate – I’m not an expert (yet!) but here’s a couple of thoughts. I think the existence of the excuse is the problem in all. Does it mean the idea of not having eating as a calming factor scares and you, and if so why? Does it mean you resent the idea/it’s not yours? Are you bored with it? I think something that would help – and has helped me with other things in the past – is re-examining what you want from changing your eating habits and what would come from it. Would you be happier if you did so, and then there is no excuse! Why keep yourself less happy, right?
For me baking is calming and then I don’t eat it and it goes bad… so I asked all my friends and such if I ever need to bake and have extra, if I can randomly give them a cake, now I have a list of sources! (Plus, you can sneak in a bite for yourself to try it)
Whoo!! Long reply, sorry. Hope it helps!

Kate: I feel your pain. I am the designated “baker” with a huge sweet tooth. I’ve lost a bunch of weight and am striving to lose 10 – 15 more. In the last couple months, I have upped my exercise, to make sure I’m getting 1 hour or a bit more of intense enough cardio to get the heart rate up. My other workouts even though healthful weren’t enough to lose. Since I’ve added spin and pilates, I’ve noted that my rate of sensible weightloss has increased when I cut WAY down on sugar, eating 3 meals/snack per day, anywhere from 1350 – 1500 calories (depending on my hunger level, I’m 5’3″, 138 with a sluggish metabolism. I still bake all the time (the comfort for me is in having the aroma of fresh baked breads/pastry in my kitchen, but use healthier recipes, freeze extras and make sure to give out to families and friends. I do no more than take a teeny taste of the batter. Truly, I feel so much better since I’ve changed my eating/diet routine. Tracking calories has been freeing. So I am in control (not obsessively) of what I’m eating. I feel like I’ll never have to diet again, but rather enjoy food/working out as part of a better lifestyle. Have my cake and eat it (in moderation) too!

Hey kath I just wanted to give you a pat on the back for cutting out Splenda! My mother and I just did and I glad to see you did too! So Congratulations! 😉

lexi ,
Oatmeal is always a great way to start a new healthy day!
Kate ,
You said it yourself “I know in my heart…” – JUST DO IT!! Start now. No more putting it off. Americans love to procrastinate – don’t wait another minute.
I always think the first thing to do when you’re committed to being healthier is take a trip to the grocery store and fill your fridge with fresh produce and foods you will be excited to eat. Perhaps a few good recipes to get you motivated as well. I find I eat the “worst” when my options are limited and I have to make choices based on what’s left in the fridge and not what I’m in the mood for, which leaves me unsatisfied and more likely to reach for a box of cereal to munch on.
If you haven’t tracked calories before or find it too time consuming, perhaps just start by keeping a food journal in general. Just write down what you eat and don’t worry so much about calories or portions. It’ll help keep you accountable and aware of what you put in your mouth.
As for the baking, Jill’s response was great. If you love to bake, find ways you can do it without having a huge cake to eat yourself. If you have trouble baking too much, well, you can’t bake your favorite cookies if you don’t have butter! Don’t keep the ingredients in the house so when you do want to bake, you can take the time to go buy the ingredients, which will help you know that you really want to bake and not that you just want a spoonful of cookie dough. Hope that helps…
Ashley ,
No pat on the back for me 🙁 I haven’t given up splenda in my coffee. I don’t use it anywhere else in my diet, but I decided it’s “worth it” to me to have it in coffee because I love coffee so much and it’s just not the same black. Since there is not a study proving it is harmful and I’ve had multiple chemists give me the low-down on the chemical breakdown of it, I decided for myself I’m going to keep using it.
