Waffles kept me full all morning – good thing because it was all shipping + boxes at the bakery!! Those of you who bought more than one bundle – I love you but I hate you! Just kidding, but we had a big snafu to figure out with the multi orders. Thankfully we think we got it!
And my hands are now sore from tape!! Orders should ship today or tomorrow – with the ones that have trickled in probably next week.
Sunshine day!!! I walked to and from the bakery for my workout (and packed boxes!) and I’m planning another 4 miles tonight when I walk to meet a friend and back!
Back at home I had a hard time deciding which leftovers to eat, so I split the difference and had both.
Pizza!
And cold sesame noodles!
Along with a cinnamony pear
In 30 minutes we have our first official ultrasound (I say official because I’ve only had one that was an emergency one at 7.5 weeks). I’m sooooo excited/nervous!! This will be Matt’s first ultrasound too, so that should make it extra special. Back with a report later!!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Best of luck to you with your first official ultrasound! That is going to be such an amazing experience! 🙂 I can’t wait to read about it.

Ahhh so exciting!
And shoot – I legitimately sat at the OpenSky checkout completely torn as to whether or not I was being a jerk by buying 2 orders (I didn’t want to take away the goodness from anyone else) but ultimately decided that the pain I feel when my Cville Cluster stash runs out was worth being a jerk for. Sooo, I’m one of those people you love/hate 😉 Sorry!
Good luck at the ultrasound – I’m so excited for you!!

awww… our first ultrasound was at alllmost 10 weeks, for dating/viability etc. It was totally, totally crazy. I think it was that ultrasound that made it real for my husband!
Also, I’m so jealous of your ability to walk 4 miles! At 30 weeks pregnant, 30 minute walks are about all I can muster!

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this but during pregnancy it is recommended that all leftovers are consumed within 24 hours, and should be heated until steaming hot. This is in order to reduce the risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis can cause serious pregnancy complications.
I also noticed your reply yesterday to the commenter who had heard that it was recommended to avoid raw kale. This is more likely to due to the fact that there have been warnings issued regarding kale found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes in the US, than to be related to calcium absorption. Similar warnings have been issued in association with other leafy greens such as baby spinach, which is why pregnant women are advised to, if not cook all their greens, at least wash them very thoroughly. Pregnant women are also generally advised to avoid pre-prepared salads for this reason.
I understand that it is very difficult to follow all the ‘food rules’ associated with pregnancy (having recently been pregnant myself), and am not trying to worry you or point out things you may have missed. However, I think it’s important that any women who may follow your site for dietary advice are aware of these issues. More information on the above is readily available via a simple internet search, or in most pregnancy health texts.
Amanda says
There are so many pregnancy rules that if we followed them, pregnant women would live in a bubble and NOT eat! I so admire Kath’s ability to still eat and be concerned about eating healthy! While I didn’t gain massive amounts of weight during my pregnancy, I sure didn’t eat healthy by any means!
I had cravings for Taco Bell (aka Toxic Hell) throughout my pregnancy and I ate it. The meat they use in their food isn’t even pure beef. My kids were both healthy and completely fine!
JosieT says
I was waiting for someone to bring up the insane food rules pregnant women are supposed to follow. How long until the alcohol debate starts?
Zoe says
Thank you for your comment Amanda. As I mentioned above, it is difficult to strictly adhere to all the recommendations surrounding pregnancy and diet. Particularly for women working full time, it can be incredibly inconvenient not to be able to, for example, grab a quick bowl of leftovers out of the fridge, or a pre-prepared salad, or have to make sure all meat is thoroughly cooked. I certainly found it challenging initially during my pregnancy. However, after a few weeks, it became second nature and I was able to incorporate the ‘pregnancy rules’ into my lifestyle while maintaining a healthy food intake and not sending myself crazy!
I also agree that we all know women who were able to completely disregard these rules and go on to achieve healthy pregnancies and babies. However, as a doctor, I am also aware of unfortunate cases in which food-borne illness has led to severe and sometimes devastating pregnancy complications. While I think it’s important that women are not made to feel guilty about their personal choices during pregnancy, public health recommendations exist for a reason.
Although Kath has pointed out previously that her blog exists as a food journal, rather than as a means for providing specific advice, it is clear from some of the comments her readers direct to her that they do sometimes use her blog as a source of health information. I highlight the question regarding raw kale, and the recent discussion of red meat, as examples. I think it’s important for readers to recognise that while Kath is a registered dietician, she is not in practice, and some of her food choices are obviously personal ones rather than those based on food authority recommendations. I think it would be prudent at times to point this out to interested readers, and direct them to a specific source of advice. Perhaps she plans to do this once BERF becomes available.
Erin says
LOL…I had cravings for Thickburgers and root beer, the latter of which I didn’t even like before I got pregnant. I ate the burgers and drank the root beer when I wanted it, in addition to eating healthy foods as well. And I gained less weight than average and had a healthy baby. Glad to know I am not the only healthy living blog reader who ate fast food when pregnant. 🙂
KathEats says
Zoe, I appreciate and understand your concern. But I have to agree with Amanda that expecting a pregnant women to eat only cooked food is quite an extreme. I have never heard a doctor or literature tell a woman to avoid them under normal circumstances. I am aware of the foodbourne risks in all produce, but in all of my pregnancy research thus far (including speaking with my doctor) the big foods to stay away from that we all know (unpasteurized cheeses, under cooked meats, deli meats, etc.) are the ones that I am avoiding. I think in the case of greens and salads, nutrition outweighs risk (unless of course there was an outbreak). I always wash my produce and have been trying to do so more thoroughly recently.
Regarding answering comments… Had a written a formal post on what foods to be mindful of, that might be different. But even so, if I were to make a list of foods to eat during pregnancy, leafy greens – washed well – would be on it.
If you could provide some more literature on why you feel so strongly about kale, perhaps I’ll change my opinion.

Was so happy to see your pictures via twitter tonight! Congratulations. Also I apologize for ordering more than one bundle! I just couldn’t resist. I swear you and Matt could cover your mortgage just by offering that stuff via mail-order:-) Finally, I started a blog this week — have been thinking about it for years. Using it to track my progress of losing 40 pounds by my 40th birthday (August). I know you probably look at 100 blogs a day, but since you are my #1 have blogger I would love any input/feedback you might have should you have a chance to take a peek.
