Good morning! And happy Friday. How’s your 2017 going so far? Whether or not you pick resolutions, I find it hard not to feel a little motivated this time of year from all the positive energy buzzing about.
I’ve really been into tuna and salmon salad for lunches again. I used to eat this curried salad all the time when I packed my lunch everyday. I’ve also been doing a lot of tasting plates because I just don’t crave big salads in the winter. Except for kale salad. New year plan: make a massaged kale salad every week and spread it across a few lunches.
I’ve also been enjoying half sandwiches every now and then. With a few chips, and a side of fruit or veggies. Citrus season is here!
His and Hers chili : ) I pulled out parts of my chili and grouped them by type, since my child doesn’t get the concept of soup yet. This wasn’t his favorite meal, but he didn’t protest all that much. I hope the day comes when he’s a hungry teenager who will eat anything!
My song of the month is “Virginia Calling” by Sons of Bill. I loved hearing this live before Christmas, and it was so beautiful with a woman’s voice mixed in when Schuyler Fisk joined them on the stage.
Happy Friday y’all!

I should really start eating more fish instead of meat. I love tuna! Thanks for the meal inspiration.

Thank you for providing the different courses / nutrition and fitness bootcamps. Unfortunately the one I want / need the most doesn’t fit my budget. You’ve mentioned a few times that Mazen is a picky eater. With your nutritional background do you know of a reason why this happens in some children and not others? I used to think it was because parents don’t demonstrate healthy eating patterns in front of their children, but that’s clearly not the case with you. I also have a 3 year old and he’ll eat most anything we put in front of him, or at least try it with some encouragement before deciding if he likes or dislikes it. Now that’s not to say we don’t have challenging days. I’ve never offered packaged snacks that are marketed to children and we make all our own meals. I guess I’ve just been lucky! We’ll see how his little brother’s eating style develops over time.

I think a huge part of it is temperament. Some kids are just way more laid back and/or adventurous than others. Sometimes within one family two children are very different eaters and while it’s not 100% nature because the nurture may have changed a bit from one child to the next, genetics and temperament probably plays a huge role. I think most kids go through a picky stage from 2-4, and my advice is to ride out the storm and keep trying and they’ll eventually get to the other side. I have noticed a small but steady improvement in Mazen’s willingness to try new things since turning 4.

I have 5 year old fraternal twin girls and have been surprised to see nature play a bigger part than I expected as compared to nurture in so many ways, from personality to food. They have been in classes together in school as well, from baby class at daycare through kindergarten this year. So they have been together about 99% of their life, unless one was sick or had special time with mom/dad/grandparents. They have such different personalities, habits, and food preferences. Even as babies and toddlers. It’s been fascinating to see them develop so uniquely.

Twin studies are fascinating!

I find it hard not to be motivated too this time of year, but then I also still kind of feel hungover from the holidays… it’s a very weird dynamic. Happy Friday!

I understand why people get annoyed about New Years Resolutions… but I really like them because of all the positive energy, too! I don’t really care that the gym gets busy in January. I’m just happy people are moving their bodies : )

Agree!! A parking spot shortage is a little annoying but once inside the more the merrier, especially in high energy classes!

I did a lot of deconstructed meals for my daughter when she was younger (she’s now almost 9). Its a great way to have them eat the same meals you do in just a different format. Given how active you both are, I”m sure he’ll turn into that hungry adolescent before you know it! Happy New Year!

Kath have you heard about wheat bread containing round up ? I have stopped purchasing it. Please advise. Thank you.
KathEats says
I haven’t and am not too concerned, but buying organic bread would mean no pesticides.

Some kids reject certain foods because of its texture. I do, and I’m an adult!
