All the details of our Lake Gaston getaway this past weekend. Floating, boating, swimming, sippin’ and eating in the summer sun.
This weekend I escaped the heat of Charlottesville for a one-night Lake Gaston getaway! I left my computer, makeup, and boys and joined my two BFFs, Sarah and Lauren, for a little R&R.
Lake Gaston Getaway with The Girls!
I left early Saturday morning and listened to some great podcasts on my drive down. (This All Or Nothing Thinking episode by Brooke Castillo was gold!)
This lake house has been in Lauren’s family for generations, and she was happy to share some summer memories with us. This actually isn’t the first time I’ve been there – we did a girls trip back in April of 2017 when it was much too cold to swim! This time it was much too hot not to swim!
I arrived just before lunch and Sarah prepared salads with rotisserie chicken and veg before we headed out on the lake.
Not a fan of murky lake water!
I actually am quite terrified of big fish, snakes, and most of all: the bottom of a lake. But it was so hot and I was very brave! When possible I kept my whole body on the surface 😉
On the pontoon! The shaded top was much needed.
After some cove swimming and boating, we went back to the dock to swim there for a bit. We jumped off the top dock – it was quite scary!
This was my happy spot:
Happy Hour
In the late afternoon we poured some sauv blanc and had happy hour in the shade.
Dinner
Lauren, the genius entertainer that she is, prepared our whole dinner in advance so we could make the most of our dock time. She made a delicious southern cottage cheese + veggie salad, a kale salad, pork tenderloin in the crockpot, and the BEST baked beans on the smoker (from her dad’s freezer!)
+ something sweet to end the night!
Sunday Breakfast
Cheesy eggs, cantaloupe + lots of coffee.
Morning on the water
I scanned all of those pictures to see if there were any monsters swimming nearby photographed from above!! Eeek!
Quick Lunch
We had salads with more beans for lunch before packing up to head home.
This little cabin means so much to Lauren, and I’m glad we got to live it up with her! It sure made me want to spend more time on the lake!

I was paddleboarding with my daughter this weekend and had my feet hanging in the water while watching my daughter jump on and off the water when I felt a little fish nibble my foot! It didn’t bother me-just gave me a surprise and had me laughing. haha Doubt you would’ve enjoyed it!

Ahhhhh!! Luckily I didn’t see a single fish at Lake Gaston. One dude drove his boat by us and said there was a huge bass 8 feet down. I told him I would have rather not known that tidbit!!! 🙂

How fun!! But I agree with you and lakes, they kinda scare me as well.

I tell myself it’s fine, it just water…the fish and snakes don’t want to be anywhere near you. Everyone is having fun. But, the minute I get in all my bravery is gone and my heart starts racing and I’m moving so quickly to get back out that I pull a muscle! ? ugh! fears can be so silly!

Yes!!

Glad you were able to find a way to beat the heat. I love Lake Gaston! Ahh the memories. My uncle has lived there for over 30 years. He actually lives in Valentines, VA, this is sorta famous because people use to (still do?) mail love notes through here for the stamp. I spent nearly every summer there until a few years ago when I moved West.

Awwww!!

Looks dreamy! I don’t mind fish but snakes on land or in the water – NOPE! I’d be outta there so fast!!
