Nothin’ like a morning run on the beach!!!
Art courtesy of yours truly
I was in a deep sleep when Matt woke up to exclaim: “It’s 7:30!!!!”
Apparently we had made a date with Larbs’s Matt to run before it got too hot.
Before I knew it I was jogging in the sand!!
Here are a few keys to running on the beach:
- Go in the early AM. The earlier the better.
- Wear a hat AND sunglasses. The hat is key.
- Wear tennis shoes and run close to the water.
- Go at low tide.
- Wear sunscreen.
I love the ocean at sunrise! Unfortunately sunrise was long past and we were hot. And it was HARD. But I had a good run.
I had intended on doing about 3 miles (since running in sand is hard!) but when we went to one pier and back we stopped for a breather in front of our house. I thought we were done! But the boys wanted to keep going, and if you ask my friends, you’d know that I am super competitive, so we ran onwards to the next pier.
Total beach miles: 5.1
I ended with a series of yoga poses in the sand. I thanked the earth for my gorgeous run with a little kiss in a chataranga.
Breakfast in a jar!
Matt made whipped banana chia seed cinnamon raisin oats and I put mine in a near-empty Honey Roasted Cinnamon jar with blueberries on top.

Adios!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
I totally agree with wearing a hat and sunglasses – a few weeks ago on vacation I was at the beach around 630-7am and I still got sun!
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
Running close to the water at low tide is KEY. Otherwise it is VERY difficult to run on the beach.
I don’t think running shoes are necessary though. Barefoot works just fine.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Your jar runeth over…yum! Glad you got your run in early though! Enjoy the rest of your day!
Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf says
Mmmm. Yoga on the beach. *adds to list of things do do before she dies*
My husband went running barefoot along the beach in Costa Rica. He said it was really hard and he was left really sore! Of course, he doesn’t run as frequently as you do.
Hannah says
Gosh, do you always go naked when you’re running on the beach? I hope they have signs up for that! 😀
Kath says
Ha! Did you not know we are at a nude beach?
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Those oats look delish! I’ve never tried them whipped, I have to do that sometime. 🙂

I had my breakfast in jars today, too. So excited not to have dishes

Have agreat day 🙂
Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! says
I am so ready to be at the beach instead of the office that I am even jealous of your “pictorial representation”! 🙂
Maggie says
Great tips for running! I don’t get to go on the beach much, unfortunately 😉
I miss my OIAJ. I haven’t had them in a while. Been sticking with super fast brekkies so I can get to work on time.
Happy Wednesday!
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
Your Paint skills are quite impressive 😉
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
I’m the same way with my workout, you’ll never see me stop early or take the easy route. That little jar of outs looks and sounds delicious, enjoy.
Rachel (Two Healthy Plates) says
I love the idea of breakfast in a jar, especially oatmeal….so portable AND the perfect way to get every little bit of nut butter out of the jar.
Eileen says
I just had one of my better beach runs. I don’t always love it. I think the extra humidity makes it harder, but it’s SUCH a good workout, and this time, I asked myself, “Do I really want to run on the road when I could do that at home?” It was worth it!
Matt says
I don’t like running with sunglasses because they gather your sweat and channel it down your face in uncomfortable rivers!
Kathy W. says
I know, me either! (Kanz Matt? or (sorta) BIL-Matt?)
Kath says
Haha – that’s from Kanz Matt! 🙂
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
Ohh – your oats in a jar look amazing!! and love the drawing 🙂
Brittany @ A Healthy Slice of Life says
Agreed- hats make all the difference!
I love reading your beach posts… if I close my eyes tightly enough, I can imagine I’m at a beach too 🙂
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
Wow 5 miles in the sand is awesome!!! Way to go Kath!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Can you believe I’ve never run on the beach before? Lots of walking, yes, but never a run. I’ve heard it’s tough on the calves and makes for a killer workout. Great job on your run! 😀
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i’ve only jogged on a beach before, very slowly, but had the best time doing it! definitely SUPER sore the next day though!
Allison K says
THe blueberries on top make it look like a little present!
Jess @ Jessica is Getting Fit says
I appreciate this as I’m going on a beach vacation at the end of the month and it’s my first since I’ve started running. I’m excited to run in the sand!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says

Jill says
Have you ever tried the Mocha flavored Naturally Nutty? Yum.
Kath says
I’ve got one to try back home!
Meg says
Haha, I was going to say something about ya’ll streaking along the beach, buuuut looks like someone already noticed the stick figure nudity 😉 Hey, at least body confidence is in full force!
Your jar is about to topple over with goodies! How fast did you have to gobble the top layer down before spilling it? 😛 Looks amazing, as usual! Enjoy your day! Savor the sunshine!
Julz says
Haha I love the picture, especially the “speed wind streaks” trailing behind you. You almost needed a bigger peanut butter jar!
Marilou @ Mostly Healthy says
Bwahaha your drawings always cracks me up! This one might be my favorite 🙂
Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
Beach running is so difficult! Props for rocking out 5 miles of it. I believe I’m just going to live vicariously through you today while I’m at my desk 🙂
Kelly says
I love running on the beach, but I always end up putting around the house for too long and getting out their way too late (like 10ish). I can stand the heat, but dodging the people strolling on the beach is the most difficult part. Looks like you’re having a great time Kath!
The Wife of a Dairyman says
What a great way to start the day! Nothing like fresh air right at the coast:)
Aimee @ The Stylish Nest says
Just discovered your blog and have to say I am enjoying it so far. Where do you find chia seeds? I have been hearing of them a lot recently, but have yet to find them. A health food store? What kind of flavor do they have, or are they just for nutrition?
The breakfast, and a run on the beach, both sound like a great way to start the day. 🙂
Kath says
They add more texture than flavor.
I get them in my OpenSky shop. I have yet to see them at grocery stores or even EarthFare.
Anne says
EarthFare has them now! And I think GNC or HealthNutz might have them too?
jessica says
Whole Foods always has them.
Nicole, RD says
What an amazing start to the day! Running on sand is hard! I always wear a hat when its sunny out…keep me cool 🙂
Rhea says
Running in sand: mother nature’s Easy Tones 😀
That breakfast looks nomtastic. I got bluebs in my CSA this weekend, and I was reminded of how much more flavorful the real guys are.
Enjoy your day!
abbi says
sounds like a great run! I’m defintitely going to have to try this meal in an almost empty jar thing! 🙂
Courtney @ Three Months says
Mmm…oats in a jar! A classic breakfast!
Morgan @ Life After Bagels says
Since I don’t have a beach close to me, I always forget how hard it is vs regular land . . . I ran on my vacation last week along the beach and it WORKED ME!
Jen says
How fun! I’ve never actually run on the beach, just at the boardwalk or street bordering the beach. It just looks so hard! Looks like youre having a fantastic trip 🙂
Sara says
Oooo that PB looks fantastic- I really want to try it!
Katie says
I love morning beach runs! Your oatmeal with blueberries and chia seeds looks delish.
Krystina says
I started doing yoga at the beach yesterday afternoon but felt silly with a bunch of people around me. It’s a perfect yoga spot, though.
Camille says
Have another fun beach day!
Joanne says
Cute little drawing – one might think you went for a run in the buff. 😉
Good run. I’ve never tried running on the beach. Guess I’m just a “road warrior” and sometimes hit the trails.
Keep having a super time, Kath.

I love your drawings. Especially nude stick figures 😀
andrea says

Paige(Running Around Normal) says
I L-O-V-E beach runs! Happy for you that you got to run one today. They definitely can be hot, though. What a fun time!
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
I would love to run on the beach but alas there will be no beach vacation for me this year! Breakfast looks tasty – I drool at the USA’s selection of nut butters!!
Jenny says
Running close to the water is so clutch… I can’t imagine running 5 miles in loose sand!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
5 miles in the sand? Way to go! I’ve always been too intimidated to run in the sand, but those tips are great. Thanks for sharing! Hope you have a great day at the beach 🙂

I think my favorite part of this entire post is the swirly lines of speed on your naked running people! haha! You are truly an artist! 🙂
Kelly says
I figured you were out on the beach when I didn’t see a breakfast post when I got to work this morning. Have fun and tell Matt I made the Oatmeal, Flax, Walnut bread last night and love it. I did the pre-ferment and all. It was actually the first loaf of non-quick bread I have ever made. Anyway, thanks for sharing. I can’t wait to try some of the other loafs.

I swear my heartrate probably went up to the 200’s last time I ran on the beach! It’s such an intense workout!
Tami Jo Eaton says
Is that a band-aid on your OIAJ?? Does Matt willingly give out recipes for the Great Harvest bread? I live an hour from a store and they do not sell the seedy buns that you make sandwiches out of. They look so yummy and good for you. My kids fell in love with the white chocolate/cinnamon chip bread and so I ordered some online, but can’t quite figure out how to make it taste the same.
Kath says
Not a BandAid – just a strip of tape!
Sorry but the GH recipes are top secret 🙂
Sheila Viers | Live Well 360 says
My husband made a version that is very close to GH High 5 Fiber –> “Seedy” Whole Wheat Loaf http://bit.ly/aKEi4l
Sheila Viers | Live Well 360 says
… with Matt’s consultation. 🙂
Dana S. says
Just had to say that I’ve really been enjoying your beach vacation posts! Looks like a great time. Your 5-mile beach run inspired me to get off my tushy this morning and run a few miles myself. Thanks for putting so much time and energy into your blog. It’s awesome and I find enjoyment and inspiration in it daily.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Running in the sand is so hard! Kudos on pounding out 5 miles!
Lydia says
Kath,
How do you get your Garmin to show your mile splits?
You can email me directly if it’s easier. Thanks so much.
