Good morning!! We’ve been out of oats for a few days, and we are finally restocked. M and I gobbled down some whipped banana oatmeal made with flax and topped with Greek yogurt and this new flavor of Barney Butter:
Pret-ty good!! But not as good as the classic : )
I finished reading The Girl On The Train last night. Really good!! It didn’t end how I expected it to, but still a satisfying ending. And an even better read because I finally got a Kindle!!
For years I’ve been reading on tablets and phones thinking that I didn’t really need a third device. The Kindle app is great, and tablets worked just fine for me, so I thought. But it wasn’t until recently when an Amazon deal had the Kindle on sale that I thought: maybe there is a reason so many people have them. With an urge to read more, I bit the bullet and my expectations have been SMASHED! I got the Kindle Paperwhite so I could read in the dark and am so happy with it.
1) First off the battery life makes a world of a difference. My tablet battery dies daily, and I’d often get into bed to find it un-readable. The Kindle battery lasts for ever (like a month) between charges.
2) The feel. It’s so much lighter than a tablet and therefore so much easier to hold. I love the grippy edges, and the feel of the screen when you “turn a page” is sooo nice. I just love the overall feel in my hands – so much more book-like than a tablet. Also, the screen takes a really long time to lock, so you can put your book down and get back into it without having to unlock a screen.
3) The anti-glare. I can’t tell you how hard it was to read a book on my phone on the beach. I had to make the text huge and the glare was horrible! I just sucked it up though because….why would I need a Kindle? Anti-glare is worth every penny alone. Here’s me reading on our deck in bright sunlight!
And the best part? I’m reading more!! = Always a bonus. I’m inspired by Caitlin’s Book A Week project, so I’m trying to get my read on more often. I am starting this book tonight at Jenna’s recommendation!
Blake and I have been busy in the kitchen already this morning. Can’t wait to share these with you!

Does a an iPad count as a tablet?.:)

Yesss… 🙂

That Barney Butter looks great! I’m weird and use my iPad to read books!

You don’t know what you’re missing! Lol

Can’t go wrong with Jenna’s reading picks, I finished I shall be near to you last week. I’m reading My Berlin Kitchen now, and it’s even more enjoyable.

I’ve been meaning to read A Girl on a Train. Thanks for the reminder!

Hey Kath! I’m curious-what brand of oats do you buy? Also do you buy ground flax or do you grind it yourself? Thanks!
KathEats says
I usually get it from the bulk bins but if I’m near a store with Quaker I stock up. Their oats are the best! A little thin which means a little creamier!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
I may be finally warming up to the idea of succumbing to getting a Kindle!

I LOVE my Kindle paperwhite! As a new mama, the ability to read with one hand is key! I totally recommend Andie Mitchell’s memoir, “It Was Me All Along.” Best book I’ve read recently!

I have been anti e-reader because I like the feel of a book in my hands. But I recently had knee surgery and have ended up using the kindle app on my ipad mini to read books. It has been so convenient to be able to download books since I’m not very mobile, and I like that you don’t have to flip pages 🙂 I could definitely see myself purchasing an actual e-reader somewhere down the road for the benefits you’ve talked about in this post!
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
I had a kindle years ago but I have to admit I lost it somewhere along the way of moving! (I actually thing I left it in my gym locker. UGH!) But I’ve been wanting to get a new one because they really do encourage you to read more!
Laura says
I just finished the same book based on Jenna’s recommendation! I really liked it, enjoy!
Valerie says
I’m like you…I resisted buying a Kindle for so long because “it’s not a real book,” but I have a Kindle Fire now and LOVE it! Check with your local library to see if they offer Kindle books too. I love nut butters; sun butter is my favorite, but almond butter is a close second.
Amanda @ Life To Table says
Do you find it hard to fall asleep after staring at the screen or is it a “different type” of screen? Btw did you know that April is preceptor month?!
KathEats says
I always fall asleep while reading so…no 🙂

The Kindle at the beach is SOOOOO great! I too, fought against the idea of buying yet another device, but reading it outside is worth it.

I just bit the bullet and got a Kindle at Xmas. I also love the anti glare and the front lighting. I think my favorite feature is that all you can do on the Kindle is read. Too often I would be reading on my phone or tablet and get distracted by the internet, a text etc. I’m reading way more now that I have the Kindle!
Tina says
I have my books on an iPad but keep thinking about a kindle, too, for the reasons you mentioned (weight, glare, etc). Do you know if books I purchased for the iPad will work on a Kindle? Or would I need to repurchase everything?
That oatmeal looks heavenly!
KathEats says
Are you reading through a Kindle app?
Tina says
I’m reading them through iBooks…
KathEats says
I don’t think they would sync then….Unless there’s a way to connect with kindle

I love my tablet reading, but have definitely been toying with the idea of having a Kindle as well… The thing that keeps me locked to a tablet is the convenience of having reading AND all of my other stuff when I travel–photos, social media, blogs, communications apps, etc. But the anti-glare alone is probably the biggest reason I’m drooling over Kindles lately… Glad to hear it lives up to the reputation!

I stayed up half the night reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo on my Kindle Paperwhite. Given the Home Neat Home posts you used to write, I think you’d really enjoy it!
KathEats says
I bought it but haven’t “opened” it yet!
Cassie says
I love the kindle! It’s nice to hold a real book in your hand, but you need something more portable!
Tiffany says
Hi kath
I’m really considering the kindle but I’m confused as to what “with offers mean” when do you see these offers and is it annoying? Would you recommend getting the 3G too? Thanks!
KathEats says
Hmmm I’m not sure about the offers? I didn’t get 3G because I figure I’ll have WiFi where I’m going and if not I’ll always have 3 to 4 books loaded. I’d only get 3G if you travel and read a ton on the go
Tiffany says
Thank you so much for the quick reply! I found out that offer show up when your kindle is on sleep mode.
I plan ahead so I would probably download my books on wifi anyway.
I love the recent format of your blog, Kath! It feels like the old blog format which I absolutely adored but with a new fresh and fun spin.
Have a great Friday and weekend! xoxo
KathEats says
Thanks!
Tiffany says
I bought the kindle! Thank you so much for your review.
Do you have any books you recommend? or a blog post with a list of a few? Thank you so much!
KathEats says
Awesome! I just finished The Girl On The Train and I Shall Be Near To You and loved both. Jenna at Eat Live Run has lots of book recs too
