OMG!! I am finally technologically cool!
Needless to say this guy has been occupying my attention all evening.
And as you also probably guessed, I am being so nerdy with the apps. I am not happy with the fact that ToDoist doesn’t have one yet! And I’d like to Sync my Google Calendar and haven’t figured out how yet (Googles Sync doesn’t seem to show up in my iTunes?) And I accidentally imported 1600 contacts from Gmail (everyone I have ever emailed!) and had to figure out how to delete them all and now I have zero contacts. And I was also disappointed to see that my version of WordPress is out of date to blog from the phone – just another reason I have GOT to upgrade WP. Zest, I need you help 🙁
But in a few days, this is is going to rock my socks off!
We spent over 2 hours getting our new phones and came home to discover something alive in the garage.
No, it wasn’t Gilbert the Garden Snake. It was two of these curious furry newborns…
By themselves they are super cute, but I am worried
1) That mom is nearby (they are too small/immobile to have come in by themselves, so I think they were born in the garage!)
2) Gilbert will return to eat them
I wanted Matt to take them outside, but he said they’d just die. But they’ll die inside too! What to do!?
We were planning a soup for dinner tonight, but because we arrived home late we needed something quicker. Matt requested kale chips! With them we assembled a super quick entree: egg sandwiches on fresh bread.
While we cooked, I made a virgin cocktail with diet tonic + cherry juice.
Chips were crunch and delish
We “fried” (just cooked in a skillet) the eggs and topped them with some cheese
Plus avocado on the sandwich
I’m tired now! I’ve been staying up so late lately. At least for fun reasons.
Nite!

So fun you got an iPhone! Can’t wait to hear what you think of it. And what a yummy-looking, quick dinner. 🙂 Eggs and toast are the best!

Aw cute miiiice
Once you get all of your apps set up, I’d love to hear what fun ones you use! I have the ITouch Ipod and have NO apps which drives everyone I know crazy – I am sure that I would love them but I’m overwhelmed!
Katie says
I don’t have an I-phone, but do have an I-pod touch that works about the same, minus the calling. I also use google calendar and if you just download the free google app. you can access it that way. I have not totally figured out how to fix things or alter the calendar from there, but I can view it and I am sure I can figure it out one of these days. Hope that helps a bit, sorry I am not quite totaly techy yet.
emmy says
Yay for the new phone! I am still in the stoneage 🙂
Kori (All Things B.) says
I’m dying for an iphone! I’m upgrading both my Apple laptop and phone before the fall semester, so I’m anxious to hear your thoughts! When I got my blackberry, I became a bit useless without it. It’s also daunting because I’m reachable by email, text, and phone all the time now 🙁 My husband and I now have a rule- no phones during meals because we’d NEVER stopped working! Good luck figuring out all the cool features!
Sarah says
ewww! Mice are nasty nasty nasty. I almost hurled when I saw that pic.
I don’t even remember seeing any food in the post, lol.
Renee says
Those mice look like the ones I almost stepped on in NOLA, then squealed like a little girl =)
Yay for the iPhone!!!!!
J says
OMG Kath
If I were you, I would call pest control ASAP. That is gross! (what if there is a mice colony in your garage?!)
Carolyn says
Um, are those BABY RATS?? I agree – call pest control cause that is scary! Mostly b/c i’d be afraid of where they came from…
On another note, loving your blog 🙂
Michelle says
Congrats on the iPhone! That’s awesome!
kristi (sweet cheeks) says
eeek, hope you figure out how to take care of those little fellas. They look so helpless. On a more positive note, YAY for I phone!
Hil says
Congratulations on your new phone!
Your furry creatures are adorable, if problematic. Good luck dealing with them.
Kailey (SnackFace) says
Woohoo for the phone! That’d be fun to play with. Those mice on the otherhand, may turn into a problem. They are so cute though! I like to think they’ll be like the rat from Ratatouille (sp?) and they’ll help you in the kitchen. Something tells me that’s not going to happen though. Hope you have a good night!
mindy says
dude, those mice are going to infest your house asap. they can lives in the walls, the ceiling, etc. you’d better call pest control.
mindy says
babies are a bad sign.
Mary Ponzio says
the mice actually do look cute. I would not like to be anywhere near them though!!
Congrats on the iPhone! I am completely jealous!! Can’t wait to see how you like it!
Bobbi says
I have had my ipod for a few months now, and am still learning sooooo much. I wish I could learn how to do things like upload pics to my blog and such…I cant wait to hear what you learn:)
Sharon says
Oh wow, that is so awesome!!! And mice? EEEKKK
amber says
Cool phone girl!!
Jenn (eating bender) says
I love that you got an iPhone!! I can’t wait to see what apps you use 🙂 I hear that it’s coming to Verizon next year (hopefully), and my mom and I are counting down the days! I’m a huge Apple girl.
I hope those are the only two mice in your future!
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
I think I would have a heart attack if I saw those little mice in my garage, and then I would have a heart attack again if my husband asked for kale chips.
I’m glad you survived both!
Brooke says
Get the SHZAM app! You hold your iphone up to any song on the radio, computer, etc and it tells you the name of it and artist!
Jenn )) j3nn.net (( says
Congrats on your iPhone. I don’t use mine that often (not a cell phone person), but it is my favorite cell phone ever. Mainly because it’s big and sturdy and has pretty colors. 😀
Those babies are ADORABLE! We have 10 cats (yes, really) and they have brought home umpteen babies from nests. 🙁 We usually just try to put them back outside.
I wish I could get kale chips to turn out right. Every time I have tried to make them, they turn to dust when I pick them up. 😕

Susan @ Nurse on the Run says
Yay for the iPhone! I thought about getting one, but they’re so expensive! (Both upfront and the monthly charges.) Let us know how you like it…maybe I’ll be convinced!
Lauren says
Very cool phone, and adorable little mice!
I love the combo of eggs + avocado. And I haven’t had kale chips for a while now… craving alert!
SAL says
Please call pest control ASAP! I know they look cute, but not good, especially since you cook so much. Yuck:(.
Love your blog!
Lydia says
How do you make kale chips? Just bake them w/ a little oil?
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
OOOH So thats why you suddenly showed up in my Google Chat! The WordPress Upgrade isn’t too complicated, just make sure you do 2.7 and not the new 2.8 beta…
Shannon (The Daily BalanceO says
sandwich looks great! I’ll have to try the egg and avocado combo!
YAY FOR THE IPHONE! 😉
Heather says
Hooray for the iPhone!! Have fun playing around with it… you’ll have it figured out in no time.
Do you know if Blackberry allows you to blog from their phones? I still haven’t figured that out on mine!
You sure have a wilderness-filled garage! 😉
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
Woah that is so awesome! I’m so jealous =)
Aww babies!! That’s cool!
Angie says
Beautiful dinner Kath! Love your blog!
Snake says
Ahhhh Noops — did you keep your same number?
I’m surprised that, being such a Google-girl, you didn’t get an Android phone (like T-Mobile G1). Especially with the calendar, gmail and contacts all seamlessly integrated.
Were those things possums, mice, moles, or what?
I was thinking about submitting meals to you as a “Day in the life of an elite cyclist” and how I try to reach 3500 kcal/day but I realized I don’t have any decent cameras, plus there’s a good bit of what I eat that isn’t “Real Food” so I just said meh. Season 1 Disc 1 of Futurama just came via Netflix so I may crack a beer when I sit down to watch in honor of Kanz and the best TV theme song ever (first beer in 3 months!).
Love,
Snake
Elizabeth says
Yay for iPhone! Color me jealous 🙂
Amanda says
Welcome to the wonderful world of iPhonage. I am obsessed with mine!
I also had the same problem with the Gmail contacts and for some reason I want to say that my Google calendar automatically imports? (I’m thinking it’s a setting I enabled somewhere).
Also! RE: To-Do list apps… look up the “To Do’s” app. The icon is a red background with a white checkmark on it. It’s not ToDoist, but it gets the job done. Good luck!
Andrea (Off Her Cork) says
YaY! An iPhone, sweet! 😀
Are those opossums? Wow! They will get in anywhere, little buggars.
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
OMG!! I am so jealous – how exciting for you!!

Yay for the iPhone!
Those poor little babies! I don’t know hwat to tell you to do – but they sure are cute! (in a “don’t ever think of them as grown up” way)
Nicole says
Cool new iPhone!! I love all the different apps, they are so much fun. You’ll never be bored with it!
Ella says
Kath, you’re always using/talking about sriracha, so I thought you might be interested this article in the New York Times that talks about its history. Enjoy! http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/20/dining/20united.html?_r=1
Michelle Hisae says
I’m not cool yet, haha. I don’t even have the touch iPod – my BF does and he loves it. I love playing with it too. Enjoy yours!
brandi says
nice new phone! i’m so behind the times 🙂 but my phone works for calling, and that’s all I need it for right now
Matt (NoMeatAthlete) says
Kale chips is such a neat idea! I was confused at first because it looks just like regular kale in the photos, I thought it was just an expression or something.
I’m really into eating tons of greens recently; I feel so great when I do. This is yet another tasty way!
Joanne says
The mice/rats? are cute. You could keep them in a cage with a little wheel and watch them spin around and around. Is that as soothing as watching fish? Prob. not.
Congrats on the new phone. You’ll figure it out. It has just SO many apps. I love mine though and actually rear-ended a guy because I’ve been so obsessed with that phone.
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
Those little creatures scare me! Yikes! I am sure they are harmless but still.
Amazing looking dinner! SO YUM!
And the phone is awesome. I would like one 🙂
Laura says
It’s a little hard to tell from the pic. If they are baby possums, I wouldn’t worry, the way their mamas carry them, they can drop them and not realize it, or they may be sick :(, she may have dropped them close to your house. But if they are mice/rat babies, yeah, you and Matt might want to consider having pest control come out and just check! That’s a problem you don’t want!
Cool phone!
Kim says
They actually do look a little cute, but don’t underestimate them — mice are disease-spreading rodents. And they multiply like crazy, so if you saw two, there could be many more in the walls (in my old apartment, I caught TEN.) You may want to make sure you keep all food in the fridge and cupboards until the problem is under control.
Kate says
Kath,
My favorite list ap is called Zenbe. You can make lists and sync them with lists Matt makes, and you can access them on the web as well as your phone. When you check something off, it moves to the bottom of your list and becomes a lighter color. It’s one of my favorite iphone aps!
healthy ahsley says
I didn’t even know what kind of creatures those were! They are so cute- and funny looking!
Emily (The Experimentarian) says
Oooh, that dinner looks perfect! I’m definitely putting this on my menu for the week. Ketchup + eggs + bread = soooo good 🙂
Sarah says
Hi Kath,
I’m so jealous! I really, really want an iphone.
I think those furry creatures are shrews. We once had a shrew in our basement. It attacked our cat, and we found both of them dead. So sad!

sneha says
lucky u!!u got an iphone.one of my friend she sold it of…to some stranger
Linda says
I also enjoy creating egg sandwiches and I think avocados taste great almost on anything. Your supper looks yummy.
What are those things in your garage??
Jess says
Are those mice? They are sooo cute. Don’t let Gilbert get them!
KatieTX says
They look like baby chinchillas. They look bigger than rats and cuter. Maybe get pest control to come by before you bury them to ID what they are! And to make sure they are not infesting your house. We had squirrels in our walls..not fun to listen to all night long.
Melinda Pollard says
awww I Love mice- they are so cute!! 😀 You could put out some oats and water and while they are little put them in a cage, when they get bigger, set them free- this is what we do at our house. 😀
klm says
welcome to the world of mac. if your iphone goes missing I do NOT know where it has gone 😉
Betty says
This explains why Gilbert is so interested in your garage! Get rid of those mice and you’ll get rid of your snake problem.
When you actually SEE mice you’ve got a big problem. They do not like to come out during the day usually. The best thing to do unfortunately is to trap them (you probably don’t need an exterminator). Here’s a tip the LOVE peanut butter. Buy some paper lunch bags and ordinary traps. Put a little peanut butter on them when you set the trap and slide it into the bag setting the bag on the SHORT side. Sorry guys … I know it’s gross and killing any living thing is not nice, but mice carry a lot of disease and you don’t want them coming into your house.
If you store any edibles in your garage THROW THEM OUT or disinfect any cans or jars you can not part with. Good luck!
yaz says
I read in the LA Times that the iphone will be cheaper by the end of summer… (around $99) but have not heard anything about verizon having it. Right now if u get an iphone u have to stick with ATT — they’re plans for the iphone will also be cheaper then.
I would have thought that you would have done your research before hand, Kath. 😉
Kath says
yaz ,
I did to that research!

Cammy says
You’re right, those are not House Mice (Mus musculus), they are deermice (one of several Peromyscus species). You are in South Carolina, right? That means they could be white-footed, Oldfield, or cotton deermice. The most likely scenario, if they are out on their own like that, is that Gilbert or another predator already got the mama, and left the little (less energy-rich) babies behind.
Cammy says
Shrews are much smaller and have different proportions. They are semifossorial and so are very unlikely to be found in the house/garage; they need a soft substrate to burrow in and eat almost entirely insects, not grains like mice do. What you have are definitely juvenile deermice.
Vanessa (Green as a Thistle) says
Hold on a sec — diet soda? I thought nutritionistas were supposed to be all anti-aspartame and artificial sweeteners? I don’t know… I’ve read a lot of evil stuff about those things, but of course sugar isn’t so hot, either. Actually, I think a good alternative is this new Pepsi Raw stuff, made with actual sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup. Give it a Google and check it out 🙂
