I woke up feeling kind of bummed that I ate so much yesterday (and Thursday night) combined with my weight gain this spring – I am not moving in the direction I want to go! But reading all of your comments was so refreshing – so thank you all for the support!
I decided my outlook on the next few weeks is going to be keep it simple. I want to eat more like Polly! I’m going to focus on the usual, Real Food, but in a simple, refreshing form. Smoothies, salads, soups. The spring weather certainly helps! I’ve been so busy that I’ve been slacking on planning fun healthy recipes and I need to get back to planning our meals. I always tell people that a stocked fridge and a healthy meal plan is all it takes to kick start motivation. I need to do this myself!
So this morning I made a simple batch of oatmeal. A half cup portion because yesterday’s oatmeal experiment reminded me how good the OAT part of oatmeal is!
The Mix:
-
- 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup soy milk, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 medium banana
- 1/2 date, 1/2 fig
- Splash vanilla
- 3 crushed jasmine biscotti
- A few slivered almonds
- Spoonful Naturally More PB
Spring Blend. I only drank half of it though – I need WATER!!!!
Today’s agenda is all fun and games with Matt around the house!!!
- Mow the lawn
- Clean the kitchen floor on hands and knees (didn’t happen earlier this week)
- Yard work
- More cleaning???
- A walk/run?
We’ve got one gorgeous day out there and I hope to spend most of it outside

Kath, good for you for not beating yourself up about these things and setting up a plan for change. I think your relationship with food/weight is really healthy and it’s something I’d like to aspire to (Goldfish indescretions and all!)
Have a great day and enjoy the sun!!
Lindsey (Mrs. LC) says
I think it’s great that your being honest to show people that no one is perfect and part of maintaining a healthy weight is going with the eb and flow – knowing when to splurge and when to keep it light and simple. 🙂

I know exactly how you feel. I lost alot of weight a couple years ago and have put some back on. I havent been eating in the way I should lately. It makes me frustrated that I’m not moving in the direction I want to. Thank you being open and sharing your insecurities. It really helps.
You are always an inspiration!

kath, I’m really glad you shared your a bit of your feelings on your splurges over the past few days…..it’s nice to know that everyone gets feeling bummed out about eating too much but that we just need to turn our attitude around and think/act more positive.
Run Sarah says
I think splurges are good on occasion, especially at celebrations as well. Thank you for sharing how you feel though — I feel the same way sometimes too.

It’s BEAUTIFUL outside today!! So far I took a 5ish mile walk and mowed grass. Gotta figure out what else I need to do in order to stay outside in the sunshine!!
Have a great day!! : )

Like everyone else, I really admire and appreciate your honesty. Even when you talk about making changes to your diet and being a little frustrated, you never take on a “food is the enemy” mentality. It’s so refreshing – thank you!

good luck and i appreciate your views about how to pursue a new plan.
a question: do you think your former weight was maybe too low? not in the sense that it was unhealthy (because you seem to healthy eating and exercise habits) but just not realistic to maintain if you wanted to have a “normal” amount of indulgences? i was hoping you might be willing to share more about how to find a “happy weight” because i’m sure that is an issue that many people deal with.
good luck!

I always agree with Keeping it Simple! Have a great day!

Oats look delish! but, when do they not? 😉 lovin’ your outlook 😉
Heather says
Sounds like you have a great plan for eating this spring! You can’t dwell on the past, and Keeping it Simple sounds like a perfect way to look to the future!
I have 2 questions about oats I’m hoping you answer for me:
1) What is the difference between quick oats and old fashioned oats besides the fact that one takes a little longer to cook?
2) I just bought some quick organic oats from my local natural foods store and it didn’t have any nutrition info on it so I asked the owner for the info. She found a print-off of a similar organic quick oats (but not the one I bought) and I was very surprised to see that it said 1/4 cup of dry oats is 140 calories! Does this sound right? I thought that was more like 1/2 cup.
Thanks!

Kath, I ALWAYS appreciate the honest way you write your blog. You are not afraid to show the world what you eat or give a recap of how you felt. You are sooooo human and very brave! I have to be honest, through the two weeks I just spent at home visiting my family I was not as blog-honest as you are and I didn’t photograph everything that I should have. I eat mindlessly way too much.
I want to start using my blog as more of an accountability for my upcoming wedding…. any advice on how to get over that ‘reader judgment fear” ??
Emily says
i love the honesty in your posts. balance is so important, and it is something i sometimes struggle with: allowing myself to splurge on those special occasions (without guilt!), and then getting right back on track. you seem to have a great approach!
Chloe says
Thank you so much for posting this, I was feeling so bummed the past 2 days about my eating and to see that you feel the same way sometimes really lifts my spirits. It’s nice to see that even my idols have tough days, but that you keep going and gain new resolve to eat better and live well. I think this is my favorite post of yours so far, so thank you!

Hey Kath,
Never comment but read your blog all the time and just wanted to say how much I appreciate your honesty with food and weight-loss. I’m 5’4” and over the past 3 years have gone from 234lbs to 129lbs by following a healthy diet and exercise program. Despite family and friends (and even strangers) telling me how great I look, I still feel I have more weight to lose. I would like to lose another 10lbs. I know that I can lose the weight, but I’m not sure I could live a normal life and maintain. From looking at your pictures and reading your exercise stats, you seem super fit to me. If it is not too personal, I was wondering if you would be willing to share how much weight you gained and if you think that it is a realistic goal to get back down to. I would really appreciate it because I think it would help me put my weight issues into perspective. Thanks for everything you do.

Hi Kath,
I really love reading your blog, and am hooked on catching up with it everyday. You’re always so honest about how you feel – and you always put things in perspective too. You’re someone who eats so healthy 95% of the time that it’s perfectly fine to indulge every now and again – especially when it’s i the company of great friends – and you have a great time! I’m always guilty of having a few too many glasses of wine – or a late night, not-so healthy snack after drinking too much :)…and I do wake up the next day with some sense of remorse – especially when it makes my workouts more sluggish. But at the end of the day – the indulgences are always in the company of my very closest friends – and I wouldn’t give up good times with them for anything! Life is too short to not enjoy it – and we all love good food and good company….and that includes the indulgences once in a while! You’ve inspired me to try so many different kinds of foods that I would never have thought to try before I started reading your blog…had my first pumpkin butter and tempeh sandwich today, and farina for breakfast…and I loved both! You always keep such a good balance between work, play and healthy eating – so don’t feel bad at all….you have no reason to…
Have a FABULOUS weekend – and don’t worry about last night! 🙂
Best always,
Farah

hey kath,
What are your feelings on working out when you have a cold? I haven’t been feeling well for a few days but just lying around, eating, and watching tv has made me feel pretty gross. So I want to work out but don’t know if i should.
Thanks,
Lynna

sounds like a fun and productive day!
I totally agree about the stocked fridge and meal plan – those are the most important things to do, but sometimes it’s so easy to slack off! That’s the first thing I do when I need to “reign it back in” after the holidays, vacation, etc.
Brittany says
Kath your an inspiration for people, you look great and yea we have all had those( I can’t belive I ate all that days) I think eating simple real foods is awsome and I think we all should do a clean eating week, to refresh ourselves and be more intuitive to what are bodies really need. I learned that from you kath. I am having a giveaway on my blog, earthybrit.wordpress.com the choice is up to you guys, a wholefoods gift card, fav coffee, or a box dr.krackers. So I am offically blogging yea. xoxo earthb

See? You are back on the right track already! I love your attitude! I feel the same way as summer is rolling around. i am the same way with salad that you are with oatmeal. While it’s always tempting to dump everything that I have on hand into my salads, I pick no more than two fun items and keep the rest non-starchy raw veggies, and just remember that next time I can pick different fun items.

I was wondering when you were going to tone down the carb intake 🙂 haha just joking Kath!! You will get back on track. Have agreat day outside.

Thanks everyone, for your kind words!
Bec ,
Haha!
Sara ,
I don’t think my previous weight was too low because I maintained it for a year and a half almost effortlessly. I know exactly why I put weight back on – I ate too much!
Heather ,
On the FAQ page there’s an oat lesson with info on the different types of oats.
I’m not sure why the quick oats would be 140 per quarter cup – that does sound too high. Possibly because they are smaller in size so they compact more in a measuring cup, but to be off by so much is surprising. I’d assume the normal 75 kcal per quarter and 150 per half.
Leah @ Simply Fabulous Now,
No judgment!! Just be honest – it shows you are real.
Jenn H.,
I was really happy around 120 – where I maintained for almost 2 years. I have probably put on 3-5 pounds. My clothes are tight, the scale is up (although I have added yoga to my routine and have seen more muscle, so it’s hard to know what is real fat and what is muscle – I rarely weigh myself for that reason), and I can SEE that I’ve gained. Hopefully it’s closer to 3 pounds than 5. Hope that helps.
Lynna ,
I have always heard – above the neck is OK, below the neck (fever, aches) is not. If you do workout though, keep it really easy. Light elliptical or walking. I often do feel much better when I am sick and get in some light exercise. It clears the mind and the sweat helps.
Kath

really? all this is about 3 lbs?! and possibly 3lbs of muscle? is 3 lbs really such a big deal?
