Gotta write quick – I’m on a tight schedule tonight!!! Watching the clock as I type…
I decided to try out the Winthrop athletic facilities today. I’d been walking at the indoor track, but had never worked out on campus. Lucky me, they just built this brand new athletic complex last fall, so everything is up-to-date and new.
I did 45 minutes on the ET while catching up on my lipids Sports Nutrition reading. Fastest 45 minutes of my life! You guys need to try reading complicated stuff while ellipticalling – time flies. Just make sure you’re keeping up the intensity with a heart rate monitor (I didn’t have mine with me today, so I just looked at the strides per minute at my usual resistance to make sure I was on target with intensity).
Then came the jock part : I put myself through 15 minutes of boot camp: springs, mountain climbers, suicides, push-ups. All that stuff. It was fun. I was sharing the gym with a few basketball players, so I had to run on the sidelines, but I sure got a nice conditioning. It made me miss soccer practice and organized sports. I’m thinknig about joining intermural soccer in the fall if my foot can handle it…we’ll see with Organic Chem too.
I ate my oat bar around 11:15 to tide me through my workout until a late lunch. Once I got home around 1:15 I was pretty hungry!! Luckly there were plenty of leftovers:
Greek Pasta Salad (definitely making this again!!), green beans and carrot/celery sticks :
Plus the last of my big Fage container with a peach and some wheatberries :
Delicious and filling.
I’ve been working hard at my Chem test (only halfway through 🙁 ) , now I have to read for lab, fold laundry, make dinner, drive to lab, do lab, drink a glass of wine (!!!), sleep, workout, pack for Hillsborough, prep the house for out of town and be on the road by 9a.m. Hope I can get it all in!! I might have to wait on comments until I get home tomorrow afternoon. Adios!

Good luck with everything you have going on today – hang in there!!

Goodluck Kath!!
PS- Where can I buy wheatberries? Just at an everyday, normal grocery store?

Question to everyone—– If you could make ONE dessert to WOW someone, what would it be?
Bonus points for giving me the recipe AND something that isn’t hard to transport in a car. 🙂
Thanks!

oh, you should do soccer, that would be fun, and it would switch up your workouts a bit too (never a bad thing.)
working out in front of boys always makes me try harder. that was shallow, but whatever works, right?

I also would love to know where I can find wheatberries! Thanks!

Carrying over the conversation to listening to your body on when NOT to exercise: I generally either do a pilated DVD and walk 5 miles or I run 3-5 miles a day. Lately, the front of my ankle/shins have been bothering me. I’m thinking this is my body’s way of telling me to stop and let it recover for a day or two, correct? I don’t think I majorly hurt something, but I’m taking today off in hopes that it will feel 100% tomorrow. Or should I just go for a light walk/job to loosen it up? Opinions? I’m really up for either…

Oh, and Jill – try the websites bakingbites.com or cookiemadness.com, both have GREAT desserts!

I would love everyones feedback! I asked a similar questions a few days ago but would love some comments and thoughts for a paper I am writing.
Food blogs seem to be poping up everywhere and I am interested in why you think this is? Why is food becomming such a popular topic?
If you have a blog, why do you write one (for the discussions it ignites or for yourself?)
How do you think food blogs change the way we communicate about food (as opposed to reading cookbooks, food magazines, or discussing it in person)
I’d really appreciate your thoughts!

Paula Deen’s fresh fruit tart is REALLY good! It is beautiful and tastes amazing. I always gets rave reviews and requests for the recipe. It also transports easily b/c I just take it in the tart pan. If you don’t have a tart pan you can make it in a pie tin but you won’t be able to get as much fruit on it. For some reason my cut and paste won’t work and it’s probably too long a recipe to try to paste here anyway but you can find it here… http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_32767,00.html

The above is directed to Jill.

I have noticed too that they are popping up everywhere! I find a new one almost everyday.
I write my blog almost as a way to keep myself in check. I would hesitate to eat something that I don’t want to put out there and I therefore eliminate most unhealthy food from my diet. I also write for other’s feedback and encouragement as well as letting family and friends know what i’m up to!
I’d say healthy food blogs are a great thing. Its showing that more and more people are striving toward a healthy lifestyle. I love reading and sharing ideas regarding food, health and exercise. I’ve learned so much through reading these blogs for the past few months.

My local grocery store (HyVee, but i think they are only in the midwest) has wheatberrys but there in the health food section and they are INSANELY expensive. I drive to a healthfood store across town to get them because you can buy in bulk and its so much cheaper

Meghan,
I’m pretty sure you have shin splints. They are pretty painful and are mostly caused by weight bearing activities (running, tennis, and volleyball are three of the top ways to get shin splints.) I would ice them a little, and rest. Although mine tend to come back when I start running hard again. It sucks basically….I hope you don’t have them

Hi Kath,
I would love to have the recipe to the Greek Pasta Salad…it looks great!

I’m 15 years old and struggling with an eating disorder. For me, food blogs, espically this one, help me see what a healthy lifestyle looks like. They’re so helpful for me. I also don’t feel so intimidated talking about food around people who are just as obsessed as I am. [In a healthy way]
Liz H. says
Thanks for your feedback girls:-) I find that more and more “healthy” food blogs are poping up. It does seem to be an accountability thing. I also think it is nice to be able to join a community of like minded people, where it may be more difficult in “real life”. I find blogs very interesting in that they are largely driven by, not only the author (say, Kath), but also the readers and comments that are posted. I find people’s comments are most appealing usually. Blogs are definatly a new way to interact with food and each other..

Hi- I am one of the recent food blog “popups.” I have found that it helps me keep a healthy mindset- to focus on how foods make me feel and how they taste rather than counting calories. There is something so wonderful about taking pictures of your food and focusing on its nourishing qualities. Also, this community is absolutely amazing- everyone is so supportive and encouraging!
Meghan says
Janna, thanks for the reply! I knew a few friends who has shin splints, and in the back of my mind I knew it was a definite possibility….bummer!

I have a question re: Kath’s breakfast. When it says that she uses her prepared banana oats…is she referring to the baked banana oatmeal…or just her regular oatmeal? Thanks!

Liz H–
I am in recovery from anorexia (I have been weight restored for almost 2 years now and am doing pretty well with the emotional and mental stuff as well.) I first started reading a food blog — Cristin’s “Eat Like Me” — because I found that I couldn’t identify with my friends’ eating styles and I didn’t have a healthy role model to remind me that my style of eating was “okay.” My family eats crap and most of my friends either don’t care about healthy eating at all, or restrict their eating and then binge later. During my recovery, I learned a lot about nutrition (going to a dietician weekly will do that to you!) and for the first time in my life I was eating meals that were completely well-proportioned with all of the food groups. I was amazed at how different my body felt and how much more energy I had, and I found that I didn’t emotionally mind the process of eating quite as much if I could prepare fresh, healthful, tasty, and pretty things that I KNEW did something positive for my body. It was (and sometimes still is) hard for me to eat; so I wanted some support in knowing that it was okay to eat what I did, even though it was different from what those around me ate.
I quickly found that I couldn’t identify with Cristin’s blog because she eats too many processed foods for my liking and because I am a vegetarian. Then, I found Kath and Jenna’s blogs. These are the two I read now (although I still look at Cristin’s from time to time.) Like Kath, I am a “volume” eater who loves to cook. So, I frequently get ideas from her blog (recipes and/or a picture that spurs on my own culinary creations.) I find her photographs beautiful, and her cooking instructions very helpful and fun to read. I read Jenna’s more for the positive attitude that she has towards food, but I also try her recipes and food suggestions. It has been very helpful for me to see that there are many approaches to food, and that it is possible to maintain a healthy balance while eating well-presented meals that you enjoy. The approaches of these two women coincides with my own food philosophy, and so I read to feel connected, to learn, and to be inspired.
Whew! That was a lot of typing…but it made me realize that I really do appreciate both of these wonderful bloggers for all of their effort and time!

Tina O.,
You can order them here:

JessieP ,
Here was my response since you missed it: You have to create a diff. calendar for each category. I thought it was annoying at first but I got used to it. Then you can show/hide each category as you wish.
holly,
I put it on the sidebar –
https://www.katheats.com/?page_id=4723
kwaze ,
I’m referring to my regular banana rolled oats (see Oatmeal Tribute page) but prepared in advance and refrigerated. It’s about 90% as good as made fresh and is saving me time during my busy summer school mornings.
Sarah ,
Thanks for the nice comments!

Suzanne,
It’s on the side bar (Greek Quinoa Salad) and I posted it above in response to Holly too.

Meghan, I don’t know if you’ll see this, but sometimes it’s worth checking your shoes first if you have shin splints before deciding you just need to take some time off. When my shoes become too worn I always begin to feel shin splints coming on. Or if I walk too much in bad shoes (e.g. flip flops) I begin to feel them coming on. So now as soon as I feel shin pain I switch my sneakers and usually that does the trick. Hope this is all it is for you so you can keep enjoying your running!
