Now 60% of the fingers on my right hand are injured…watch out thumb and pinky!
This afternoon I was pulling the garage door down with all of my might while my hand was on a ledge that closes in as the door straightens. Who knew!?
I was paralyzed for a moment with my two fingers flattened – like rubber – in the door. And then, while yelling "OW OW OW OW OW", I was able to lift the door back up.
The trauma of the incident left me sobbing, but I think they are going to be OK.
Again, I was very very lucky.
Other than being very very sore, they seem to be functioning properly. (And I can type!)
Matt immediately brought me a pot of ice, and I think that helped a lot. I couldn’t look at them for the longest time fearing they’d be black and blue or huge, but I think my soft tissue just absorbed the shock (thank GOODNESS no bones were crunched!)
The day was on a good note when this happened.
First, Matt and I met Stephanie for a frozen yogurt
Can I tell you how excited I am that a self serve fro-yo place opened on the downtown mall the same month that I moved here!?
AND – it’s BETTER than TCBY and Yoforia. I swear.
The flavors were so REAL tasting. Like the foods they’re supposed to taste like. And it was thicker and creamier than the other places too.
And the peanut butter was so very authentic. I am a huge fan!
I got mostly tart with a blob of PB on top with a few chips and some coconut. Nice afternoon snack!
After yogurt, Steph and I headed to Ashtanga Yoga of Cville for a vinyasa yoga community class (= $5!)
Although it seems to be a pretty laid back and somewhat small studio, I really liked it. Or perhaps I was just SO very happy to be doing vinyasa again!! It’s been too long. The class was 90 minutes and a bit slower pace than I’d prefer, but I was there for the heart and soul. And there was MUSIC!!!!! Nothing pop or rap like Tanner, but I’m such a music person that ANY music is better than none. It makes me feel like the yoga flow is a dance.
I explained this over dinner last night to Matt: I think that once you’ve found the studio, style and teacher that you 100% jive and fall in love with, it opens you up to appreciate ALL other kinds of yoga that might otherwise just snuff out. Even in classes that I don’t care for, I am still doing yoga! And I still have an appreciation for the practice. And I don’t think I’d feel this way if I hadn’t fell in love with a particular style and studio. Call it…enlightenment
As I was sitting up from savasana, I heard "Kath?" Turns out blog reader Grace practiced right beside me! I hope I didn’t do anything embarrassing during class! Ha. [Hi Grace!] Very exciting!
The photo is blurry because that’s how you feel after yoga 🙂
OH, and the room was nice and hot and sunny and I was loving it until a girl interrupted the class to tell the teacher to TURN THE AC ON!!?? The room was apparently 84* at the time, and that was plenty warm for me (i was just starting to drip sweat) but the AC was harsh and cold 🙁 Going to try out some more classes at this studio – perhaps even Ashtanga!
While we were out playing today, this was cooking in the crockpot!
Call it… Smoky Bean Soup
Smoky because of the fire roasted tomatoes that started it off
1 can tomatoes plus 2 carrots, chopped
Plus this many okra, chopped into bite sized pieces
Plus the corn of two cobs
Plus a cup of dried Adzuki beans (or black beans!)
Plus a container of veggie broth, 1 tsp of garlic gold nuggets (or 1 clove), 1 tbsp paprika, and 1.5 tsp of Worcestershire, salt + pepper to taste,
Set crockpot to simmer (or low) for 4 hours.
–>
Makes 3 big or 4 medium bowls of soup. Okra in soup is just the best!
Top with greek yogurt! Tortilla chips would have been lovely too
Matt and I watched The Blind Side after dinner. Was a nice movie! I liked it (and love Sandra Bullock!) I’d love to now discuss that movie in a college classroom setting please.
Mid-way through my stomach nearly growled!!
I made a snack of half an Alliebar, some dry oats, milk and half a banana
Reading –> Sleeping time!
Anna Lee says
I feel your pain!! I hope your hand is better but I guess it’ll throb a bit tonight. Ibuprofen!! Could have been much worse! =^( Phew!!!
Laura @ Blogging Over Thyme says
Ouchh!! So sorry about your finger, I know someone who did the exact same thing. Don’t worry, I’ve been very accident prone this week too…maybe its some bug flying around 😉
I have a yogurt place around me that looks identical in the inside as that one you went to, but it’s called something else. Love me some tart fro-yo.
Brooke - One Healthy Cookie says
Yum! I love meals that I can throw in the crock pot. This one looks especially good 🙂
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
I love your snack. Glad your fingers are okay. You are just having a rough time with accidents before yoga. I do agree that the right teacher in any exercise class makes all the difference.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
ouch! your poor hand! well, at least you got some froyo. i am wondering if you, like me, will now eat it half as much as you did before it was nearby. there are about FIVE frozen dessert options near where i live, and now that they’re there i never want it!
Nicole - yuppie yogini says
Awww..your poor hands! You look so sweet when you crying. My mother did the same thing last summer and had to have a tetnus shot..garage doors are dangerous! Luckily, ice cream makes everything better!
Chelsey says
Ouch!!! I hate it when things like that happen to my hands – it’s so debilitating (‘m not sure if I spelled this right)!!
holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
Your poor fingers!!! That was totally your survival instincts kicking in — you had to get your hand out and you were strong enough to life the door. That is scary though — what a sad pic of you crying. 🙁
I would love some PB froyo right about now…
Liza @ Health Nutting says

Ilana says
Poor Kath! That is the worst feeling! I can relate– My car door slammed shut on my hand senior year of high school on the day of my French AP exam. Never forget it. Wo-oof.
On a lighter note, so glad yoga was fun. 🙂 And that fro yo place looks fab. Cute name. i’ve been meaning to try the Yogiberry near me for the longest time. 🙂

hippierunner says
I hope your fingers are doing well! That black bean soup looks so good! And what a bummer about the girl asking for the AC up! I hate when that kinda thing happens!
Martha says
Kath, I had that EXACT finger/garage door accident a few months ago…I too sobbed pretty hard at the shock, and looking at my smashed and bloody fingers just made it worse! They were sore for a few days, but healed rather quickly — a week later, I had totally forgotten about it. I didn’t touch the garage door for nearly a month after that, though!
Ariffa says
beans beans the magical fruit. Good looking dinner
your poor fingers, I audibly gasped when I read what happened =( feel better pretty lady!
Stephanie @ Becoming Green says
Oh I’m so jealous of your okra! I’m in Colorado and only know of one place to get fresh okra here, and it’s not quite in season yet. Probably a couple of more weeks before we see any.
Hope your fingers feel better in the morning!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Ahhhh you poor thing! Other than the accident, your day seemed to be rockin’! I swear, with every KERF post, I am wanting to move to C-Ville more and more.
maggie@living food junkie says
Oh Kath! My younger sister did the exact same thing with my parent’s garage door a few years back. I remember her yelling for help, lots of tears and the pain she was in. I feel for you Kath, I hope your sore fingers heal fast 🙂
Steebalis says
So i don’t know if this is mean, given your intense pain, but you look pretty when you cry.

You’re so lucky your bones didnt crush!! Also, I think you’d be amazed at the amount of self serve froyo in California. They are literally on every corner of my town!
Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
I’ve been in love with Charlottesville my whole life. I would visit my cousin there frequently while he went to UVa…but $5 yoga classes may make me considering packing up the U-Haul and heading East.
So glad that your fingers are okay! What a scare!
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
That fro yo shop is uber-cute! I hope your fingers are feeling better : )
Kathy W. says
I’m so sorry–it’s excruciating, I did it once several years ago. Was closing the door by hand (there’s no handle) and the sections came together on my fingers. Yes, I let out a scream, and my husband & SIL didn’t seem to realize what was going on at first. And then the blessed ice. But now I’m afraid of those doors–I basically won’t do anything but pull them up from the bottom!
erica says
OUCH! hope your fingers are doing better! that sounds excruciatingly painful! but nothing some frozen yogurt can’t fix right? ;p
Maribeth says
I just watched The Blind Side last night–such a good movie!
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
Oh my goodness! I am glad that nothing is broken-that sounds so painful! A few years ago right around Christmas, I was closing my car door and somehow got the fingers of one of my hands caught in the door as it closed. I had to open the door to get my fingers out and and couldn’t really use that finger/hand at all. I ended up having to get x-rays because we thought it was broken. Fortunately, it wasn’t, but I’ve been super careful with car doors since!
Caitlin (EatFeats) says
Oh no hope you have a speedy recovery! My high school boyfriend once got his fingers stuck in a LOCKED car door. Ouch.
Nancy @ The Wife of a Dairyman says
Glad you didn’t do any serious damage to your two fingers. Your soup looks great, I’ll have to try the okra in the slow cooker next time:)

Ouchhhh. I slammed a car door on my own thumb once, and my mom jokes that doors hate me because they’re constantly slamming on my fingers. 🙁
Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) says
You are very accident-prone lately! I feel your pain and whenever I hurt myself like that I always need to sit down because my legs go like jelly and I feel all queasy. Not good. Glad the rest of your day was better.
Arlene @ Adventures in Weight Loss says
I’ve done that same thing myself. The pain will go away … eventually. The embarrassment lives on forever, though. 😉

The studio has a lot of character! And for $5, you can’t go wrong. I need to find a good one near where I live soon. 😀
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says

I’m so jealous of that fro yo place. I’m still waiting for one to open in my town!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Yikes, your poor fingers! I get on rolls sometimes when I just accidentally beat myself up. It is so frustrating. I hope they feel better today. Glad you are getting into the groove with your new city. They definitely makes you feel at home. The stew looks delicious. We do bean stews here all the time. With my husband and I and two growing boys, we have finally discovered that bean stews are a very inexpensive and nutritional way to fill everyone up.
