^^ Profound thought of the week
Did you know the sun does not rise until 7:13am? I did not.
So you can imagine my disappointment when my alarm went off at 6:15 to pitch darkness.
I do not run in the dark alone.
So I waited patiently [in my bed!] until there was light in the sky and set out. This means I’m running late, but luckily that is OK.
I jogged a beautiful sunrise 4 miles complete with mountain views, gloves, running tights, a vest and a hat. It ain’t summer anymore.
Breakfast was waiting on my return
Overnight oats [Coach’s Oats style] soaked in milk, yogurt, chia seeds and banana along with raspberries on top and Barney Butter on the bottom. Delicious!
See that sunshine? It is REAL!!
Coconut tea on the side.
Wish me luck goin’ north on 95!
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
Farewell to running in tank tops! Are you coming to my neck of the woods?!

I hate that the sun is rising later and later! I love waking up to sunshine! 🙂
Sarah says
Time to bundle up during morning runs! Goodbye to summer but hello to all of the wonderfulness Fall brings!
Khushboo says
Oh man I would love to scrape off that jar- love how much Barney Butter is remaining in the jar! Have a great day!
Michelle Hunt (PeachyPalate) says
I’m in the office before the sunrises. It’s one pitfall of the winter…darkness. Getting up at 5.30 is so much easier when it’s bright outside!
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
I’m always surprised by how dark the mornings get in the fall and winter!! Yet another reason why I’m always happy when summer rolls around– early runs! 😉
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
I am so not a fan of this staying dark so late stuff! It seems like it started staying like an hour darker overnight!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I love when it is light out…..so sad when it is super dark in the a.m.! But at least you got that run in. Have a fun trip 🙂
Angela (Oh She Glows) says
It’s finally sunny here too 🙂
and I’m not liking the dark mornings!
Blessing @ Working Mom Journal says
Stay safe!
Karen says
Have a fun trip with Mom and safe travels, Kath!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I feel you on the darkness. For the past 3 weeks I have been driving to work in the dark. It is pretty depressing. It won’t be a sunny drive until April. Wahh.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes` says
Yeah for sun! Breakie looks great 🙂
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
Wow those raspberries look amazing! So pink 🙂
Molly @ RDexposed says
Under-jar shots are muchly improved! Your determination is noted and admired.
Elisabeth says

KathEats says
HAHA!
Lindzjane115 says
There’s something refreshing about exercising as the sun is rising–a great way to start the day! I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Coach’s Oats (yay Open Sky!) and the end of my peanut butter jar–your OOIAJ look so good! Safe travels today!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Yup, that’s why my weekday runs are usually treadmill runs…
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
It’s getting harder and harder to get out of bed in the morning with these late sunrises. Although, I’m hating the shorter night even more than the dark mornings.
Karissa says
Had the same problem this morning waiting for the sun! But in about a month I guess Daylight Savings will help with that 🙂
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Yay for sunshine! It’s finally sunny here again too, and I’ve even heard rumours that it’s meant to be nice and warm this weekend. I’m not holding my breath though! I’m not a big in-the-dark runner either. Running at sunrise however, is gorgeous!
Anna says
Our nut butter jars are on the same schedule- I had OIAJ the day after your sunbutt OIAJ, and tomorrow will be another OIAJ day for me! 🙂
Angela @ PattycakesnPancakes says
I haven’t tried Barney Butter yet. How does it compare to other nut butters?
KathEats says
It’s really good! Nice and roasty and melty
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I hate that it’s so dark. I usually leave my house to drive to work around 6am and it’s pitch black outside. Sometimes I need to remind myself that it’s actually morning and not night time! I love your breakfast!
Have a safe drive and have fun! 🙂
Heather @ Better With Veggies says
If you live in a safe area, you may want to look into a headlamp for pre-dawn runs. It makes life much easier when the mornings take longer to get light. 🙂
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
i woke up around 6:20, a little before my alarm, and could not believe how dark it was!! already missing the bright early mornings of summer. breakfast looks delicious… those raspberries are gorgeous!!
Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food says
Dark mornings are one thing that I definitely dislike about fall! It’s so hard to get out of bed!
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
Time to start pulling out all the fall clothes! I am so ready for sweaters. But I don’t like at 6:30 when my alarm goes off and its still dark!
JessE @ Love Life From Scratch says
Your breakfasts pictures always look so amazing and stress-free (like a mini vacation from the day). It must be the outdoors and the sunshine. If only it was light out and warm at my 7AM breakfast time 🙂
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
What beautiful morning pictures! Have a safe trip 🙂
Lynn @ the actor's diet says
It’s 6:45 as I type this and still dark! Wah.
Laura says
I feel you! My roommate and I try and run together at 6 a.m., and it’s harder to be motivated when it’s dark and cold outside!
Katelyn says
Where can I find Barney Butter? Love your photos in the bright sunshine this morning! 🙂
KathEats says
Fresh Market has it. And online. Not sure what stores you have in your area
Katelyn says
Thanks for the info! I’ll have to make a trip to Fresh Market. I’m a loyal Trader Joe’s shopper 😉
Christy says
Hooray for the sunshine! Yes, the later mornings and earlier evenings are a sure sign of Fall…I don’t like getting up in the dark either…my dog drags her feet too! Happy travels! 🙂
Sarah @ Sarah's Modern Bites says
I LOVE this running weather! I bet your run was super refreshing 😀
Are you coming to BOSTON!?
Elisabeth says
I hear ya on the late sunrise! I leave for work at 9pm & it’s dark…then I leave work in the morning at 7am to go home & it’s dark… Makes for a sun-less existence in the fall/winter!
Lindsay @ biking before bed says
I have been doing indoor workouts so I don’t have to run in the dark. I wish I could show up at work later so I could enjoy the fall weather. I hope you have some good music or podcasts for what could be a hellish drive:(
Cait's Plate says
Gah! I CANNOT WAIT for my Coach’s oats to come from OpenSky! I just want to make a big old bowl of pumpkin oats with it 🙂
Though now I really want overnight oats in a jar with them too…it will have to be a game time decision as to what I do first.
Also? I know! I woke up at 6 to run this morning and realized it was completely pitch black out! I had no choice but to go – luckily the entire waterfront is well lit but you better believe I brought my cellphone with me and was clutching it the whole time!!
Hillary says
Have safe travels up here to my neck of the woods!
eliza says
I hope you hit zero traffic!!! I miss my University of Maryland but I do not miss that drive on 95 🙂
Lindsey says
I don’t run in the dark along either. I definitely don’t feel like it’s safe!
Where did you get your mug with the bikes? I love it!

KathEats says
That’s exactly what I had in mind!
Andrea @ Run, Eat, Date, Sleep says
Wow, I had no idea it was so cold in North Carolina to warrant gloves and a vest! So glad I moved to Florida!
crystal says
Don’t you get hot running in all that? Here wearing that much for a workout doesn’t usually happen until Thanksgiving, even if it’s been on the colder side. I’m just wondering how you didn’t overheat!
KathEats says
I was actually perfectly fine in that outfit. I’d rather be hot than cold!
Elisabeth says
Eh. I’d rather be cold than hot 😉
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I feel like I see that coconut tea every time I read your breakfast posts. Must find myself some!!
Deva @ Deva by Definition says
I ran with the school buses today. Well after the sun had risen. It was a chilly, quick run, but I enjoyed it!
Johanna B says
I leave for the bus at 6:20AM. It’s pitch black. That’s about the only time I go out alone in the dark. Mornings walking to the bus don’t seem so scary. This morning was clear and crisp and I could see stars. It was nice to enjoy it in solitude.
Allyson says
Wow, just realizing now that it’s dark out in the mornings. Must be nice to sleep in every day. It’s been dark in the mornings for weeks now. I wake up at 5 every morning for work and not much later on weekends for runs.
crystal says
I don’t get up early for work (I’m a SAHM), but my kid wakes up at 5 for a feeding (and the toddler probably woke up at 4 with a nightmare) so I’d say get used to early mornings KERF if you’re planning on a kid 🙂
Katie says
I found that out recently too, I have been having to get up at 5:30 , and my breakfast pics have been failing, no light outside for me to photo and I cant wait until 7 to eat, cause I would be starving!
Love the OIAJ! Yum!
Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl says
Ironic on my part that you had this for breakfast. I saved the jar of peanut butter we finished off a couple days ago. I have fresh raspberries off the vine when we went picking this weekend. And I was just telling myself this morning I need a ‘recipe’ to put all this together. Open this post up today and POW. Raspberries and Nut Butter. Now I know what I am having tomorrow morning. Thx. 🙂
Lysandra says
I recently discovered your site and LOVE IT. I was strolling the internet looking for a healthy sweet potato gnocchi and your beautiful site popped up. This is such an inspirational healthy site, I can’t wait to try more recipes! I made the sweet potato gnocchi on Sunday (with NC sweet potatoes!), and HOLY POTATO, it was delicious! I started a blog in January and am always looking for clever sites like this one. Thank you so much for a great recipe and a healthy site I can learn a lot from. Wooohooo for morning runs!
KathEats says
Welcome!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
The one good thing about living in a city: Street Lights! Although still slightly creepy anyway. I think we should send the sun a letter and ask him (her?) to come up a little earlier. please and thank you.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Those raspberries look so good. Hope you’re having good luck on 95!
Laura @ CookKnitRun says
I’m not a fan of dark mornings either. I’ve gone from summer to hibernation mode! Oh well. I’ll trade dark mornings for this cool weather and not having to turn on the AC any more!
Johanna B says
Strangely enough I enjoy the dark quiet mornings. I don’t feel that I need to be outside doing something. I can enjoy solitary pleasures and drink a cup of hot tea. Ahhh, fall….
Jazz says
Lol, if I waited till the sun came up to run I would be wasting half the day by Dec ( comes up at 10:30 – 11am)
Mauimandy@The Grains of Paradise says
I think the sun is still coming up around 6:15 here….the closer you live to the equator the more “even” your days are. The only bummer is in the summer time it gets dark way earlier than say, the US Mainland. I’m always jealous of the folks that have the sun out past 9pm that time of year…..Aloha!
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
haha I love dark mornings when it’s early! Not sure why 😛 But I guess running in it wouldn’t be very fun either! Have a safe journey~
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
It’s getting darker earlier in the evenings, too. Sniff.
The overhead/top down shot of those raspberries is PERFECT! I hope you submitted that somewhere b/c it’s gorgeous!
Cherie says
What’s the temp there in the morning? In Chicago, I wear that get up when it’s below freezing. 🙂
Catherine says
I know it’s weird (and not very safe), but I LOVE running in the dark. I have to be at work super early, so it’s always dark when I run no matter what time of year. I used to be very scared, but now I refer to myself as the “Vampire Runner” because any daylight seems to zap my energy!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
Coconut tea sounds good! I’ve never seen or heard of it before.
Meghan @ Day-to-Day Crazy says
I have been obsessed with raspberries lately, they’re probably one of my favorite fruits. 🙂
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’m so bummed about the darker mornings now. Especially since it makes my breakfast photos look terrible! 😛
Erica Caterina says
Hey Kath~
Any hints on where to get Coconut Tea? My tea season has officially started, coconut tea sounds to good to be true! I am Marylander (outside of Bmore) so we have most all stores.
Thanks~
ECC
KathEats says
Hey Erica,
Mine is from Adagio teas online store – it’s the best I’ve ever had! I have found that basic grocery stores have a fair selection or places like World Market or Fresh Market. Just saw there’s a new Fresh Market in Towson!
