In this post I’m sharing what happened to Beautycounter in 2024 and answering the most-anticipated question: “Is Beautycounter coming back?” Check out this post for all my Beautycounter product swap recommendations and my Oliveda Skincare Review. In April 2024, Beautycounter Brand Advocates found out that Beautycounter will be closed/not-operational for quite some time. This was devastating news for me, and I know many of you who use and love these products feel very disappointed as well. I feel like a rug was pulled out from under me. I had NO IDEA this was coming or that the company was on the verge of a major transition. In fact the week before they paused operations, they had just shared a perfume promo, and I had an email drafted ready to hit send the next day. Since I felt blind-sided, I want to provide as much context as I have here.
Is Beautycounter Coming Back? Beautycounter Closure FAQs
What happened with Beautycounter?
In 2021, Beautycounter was purchased by an investment firm called Carlyle Group, and a few months later, Gregg Renfrew (the founder) was asked to step down as CEO. Since the sale, Beautycounter has encountered economic challenges that have led to Gregg returning as CEO, buying the company back from Carlyle Group, and restructuring it as an entirely new entity under a brand new LLC.
As far as I know, the challenges that occurred during Carlyle’s tenure were not related to the products not selling but rather overspending / poor decisions on the management side. For example, shipping and customer service at Beautycounter used to be top notch. Over the years new shipping providers and different customer service teams led to a less-than-ideal situation. I can’t say for sure, but I bet those decisions were made to put profit ahead of people. And people noticed! My friend Teri shares a little bit more about the business side of things in her blog post here.
Is Beautycounter coming back?
We have been told directly from Gregg that Beautycounter’s business operations are on pause until later in 2024, but she has every intention of bringing the company back – and better.
Gregg and her team are working diligently to rebuild the tech, processes, and platforms that will allow Beautycounter to return with the same formulations, packaging, and company name. Originally they were going to continue operations as usual and re-launch in May, but Gregg made the hard decision (which she shared tearfully with us) that it would be smarter of them to pause operations and comb through every process than continue to run as Carlyle had (think shipping vendors that were taking too long and contracts that need renegotiating).
I’m hopeful the new Beautycounter will launch later this year. We’ve been told it will be driven by mission just like it always has been, and that is reassuring. Originally we were told everything was paused as it was, but now it sounds like we’ll all be starting from scratch with a new compensation plan, structure, maybe new product line. Gregg has said she hopes to bring back the consultant community in a new 2.0 version. I have 100% trust in Gregg. So many of these problems were not her fault, and she is trying to rebuild in the smartest way!
While I don’t have a crystal ball, so I can’t say for certain what the future holds, I have every intention of staying with Beautycounter if and when it resumes.
Can I still purchase Beautycounter products?
From now until the projected relaunch, all Beautycounter business operations are on pause. This unfortunately means that orders cannot be placed through the Beautycounter website for the foreseeable future. This is such a bummer because I know that so many of you love and rely on Beautycounter’s products in your everyday routines! (I’m right there with you.) I am especially sad about the new perfumes that JUST launched. I heard from so many of you that you were going to buy a full size as soon as the site reopened, and now you can’t 🙁 I’m trying to ration the three bottles I bought so they last until the fall (knock on wood).
My Thoughts
I am sad on so many levels. I fell in love with Beautycounter’s products in 2019 shortly after Birch was born, and the company has become a huge part of my identity and online business. Since the beginning, I’ve been genuinely excited to link arms with a B Corporation that was advocating for change in the beauty industry at large. I was proud of the huge steps Beautycounter took to improve legislation in the highly unregulated beauty industry. Financially this will hurt, but what hurts the most is thinking about all the products I have upstairs that will eventually run out. I really hope Gregg can bring them back to life.
I’m a loyal Beautycounter client, what can I do now?
If you need to purchase some Beautycounter products: you might be able to find a small assortment at Ulta. Tip: your local store may have more inventory compared to what’s left online. I found some Dew Skin at mine.
If you are looking for new brands: Beautycounter has been my “easy button” skincare and makeup, but I will be looking for alternatives. I am doing some homework on my end and looking into alternative skincare and makeup brands that also meet high safety AND performance standards. And if you’re not on my beauty email list, you can add your email here for more detailed info.
I have always loved that Beautycounter was a one-stop-shop for me because I value simplicity. I’ve gotten a lot of questions on the “next best recommendations” and here are some thoughts. {These are affiliate links.}
Oliveda
Oliveda is a new-to-me brand that many of my fellow Beautycounter advocates are going to be using. The company is European and focuses on waterless skincare, so it’s extremely potent and oil-based (though it promises not to make your skin oily!) The ingredients are clean and it’s touted to have incredible results. I’m ordering some of the best sellers!
Update: I published a separate blog post all about Oliveda that you can read here, including the products I have tried and used!
Products To Try:
- If you love BC Countertime Essence try the F67 Corrective Facial Tonic
- If you love the BC Overnight Resurfacing Peel try the F81 AHA + HT serum
- If you love the BC Supreme Cream try the F74 Regeneration Intense Face Cream
- If you love the BC Vitamin C try the F83 HT + Vitamin C Serum
- If you love the BC Cleansing Oil try the F72 Corrective Cleansing Oil
- If you want a retinol-like effect try the F87 Kahai Elixir (natural retinol)
- Generally the Corrective Line is their anti-aging line like Countertime
Perks include free shipping on $50, 365 day returns, and a free product if you take their skincare quiz!
Colleen Rothschild
Colleen Rothschild is a brand that I have tried and loved in the last year. They have some products that compliment Beautycounter (a lip conditioner, lux face oils) that I’ve tried and they are great. I might give the serums a try soon. The safety standards are not quite what Beautycounter is, but it’s considered a clean brand. I will say that everything Colleen smells AMAZING.
My Favorites:
Use code KATHEATS20 for 20% off your entire CR order!
- Cleansing Balm (it doesn’t smell as good as BC’s to me, but it works great!)
- Purifying Cleanser
- Extreme Recovery Cream (use it at night, but day too if you have dry skin)
- Age Renewal Super Serum (a good alt to the Countertime Serum)
- Retinol Supreme Night Oil (I’ve been using this a few times a week for a while)
- Face Oil No 9 (smells SO good!)
- Butter Lip Mask (I switched to this when BC discontinued theirs. I put it on every night at bedtime.)
- Illuminating Tinted Eye Cream (instantly brightens the eyes, but dispenses very aggressively!)
Makeup
Some products I’m trying from Crunchi, which is a comparable clean brand:
- Mascara – I bought the Shattered Mascara and it is very similar to Beautycounter’s in terms of the wand and formula. The tube is made of thick glass as part of their commitment to reduce plastics. I actually think it smudges less than BC! I also got the DIME Volume Mascara since I already love their lash boost serum.
- Foundation – The Crunchi Beautifully Flawless Foundation is a bit thicker than BC’s, but the texture, blendability, and coverage is good. If you need a new foundation, give it a try! I ordered the shade 2.5 and it’s very similar to BC. Check out the Crunchi Shade Finder Quiz to match foundation and concealer shades.
- Eyeshadow – I am so happy to have learned that Crunchi has talc-free powders! I got this cool tones shadow palette which has a purple, a gray, and a shimmer: Shadow Bar in Bloom.
- Bronzer – Check out the Solarize Bronzing Duo
- Highlighter – They also have a Luminescence® Highlighter for those of you who love a shimmer.
Thank You

My advice is don’t trust anyone 100% with your financial stability. Sounds like Gregg hasn’t made the best decisions at every step even if she’s good at the communications and other parts. And the MLM portion of beauty counter is not top priority to return. Wishing you the best.
Kath Younger says
That is great advice! I actually don’t think the missteps have been Greggs. I think they were mostly the investment firm’s. She told us yesterday that consultants will be a priority, so things are looking up!

Hey Friends if you’re looking for an amazing all natural skin care brand that really works and is doing good I. The world, Rooted is the way to go! RootedForGood.com 🙂

Kath,
I’m so sorry to hear how this has affected your business. As you research other companies and provide the info to your readers, will you please note which products are fragrance free?
I have previously been interested in BC products until you write how great they smell. That’s wonderful for those who enjoy fragrance but many of us cannot tolerate it.
Thank you!
Kath Younger says
I will definitely look into fragrance free! Thanks for bringing that up.
Joseph says
RootedForGood.com only uses essential oils and no other fragrances, so you get the incredible smell in a gentle way without the headache:)
Jess says
Hi, Joseph! Thanks for the transparency about essential oils in rootedforgood! Essential oils can be super allergenic so I am grateful for your disclosure!

I recently made the switch to Oliveda and also made the switch as a consultant. LOVE the products so far (only have used a few weeks!)

I don’t know about the product. But BeautyCounter is a terrible company.
I was the photographer that shot the Perfume Collection and dozens of other products for their PDP. They Are +100 days over due on paying out an invoice. The Producer was fired. The Sample Coordinator was fired. Their Accounting has been diverted to an email, that may or may not get addressed.
The project was a nightmare. Their in-house team was the most disorganized, misrepresenting and unprofessional. The fact that they conduct business like this makes me understand why they went under.
Kath Younger says
I am so sorry to hear that Dave – what a mess! I do hope you’ll be paid. I will say that this was all under Counter Brands, which was operated by Carlyle Group, and Gregg bought the brand back to try to make all of this right. I hope it won’t leave a forever bad taste in your mouth (although I understand if it does). Your photos were gorgeous!

I hate this for everyone. RMS Beauty is amazing! Clean beauty and I’ve loved everything I’ve tried so far.

There’s been an intense run and rush on beauty counter countersun sunscreen especially the spray. I’ve seen bottles going for $80 on eBay and Poshmark etc. The expired ones are going for about 50 sometimes. It’s absolutely insane. Yes, it was a great product but there are others out there that are also mineral based without toxic chemicals. I haven’t found any as good but at least there’s some other options.
Kath Younger says
That is crazy!!! I LOVED the BC mineral spray but wouldn’t pay $80! I really like the Crunchi mineral sunscreen.

So sorry to hear about the challenges of BeautyCounter. Since the pandemic time it has been difficult for companies.
The company I have been with since 1991, the Shaklee Corporation, is financially strong and we have a solid leader in Roger Barnet.
Please feel welcome to reach out to me for more information. We offer beauty inside and out! Pure nutrition supplements that are beyond organic standards and skincare recommended be EWG. Safe, pure and proven to work products.

I’m so relieved to find your informed explanation and product transfers. BeautyCounter’s shut down was a surprise, and I hope they come back in the same clean quality they’ve had. I’ll be the first to order!
