Totally had beer + bread for dinner. But that’s OK! I had vegetables for breakfast.
This afternoon I was feeling snacky and dove into some leftover hunks of bread
On second piece, Laurel decided I should have some protein to help fill me up at the exact moment I remembered we had yogurts in the fridge. Perfect.
Yogurt topped with some granola made a wonderful snack that satisfied my appetite. Along with 2 bottles of water!
Then we mopped
And closed down our FIRST MONTH OF SALES!! It was good. Not fabulous. But good!
We got outta there as fast as we could because Seamane and Rob were hosting an IPA blind tasting tonight!
These two take beer even more seriously than Matt and I do. So fun to share the hobby!
I had the beginnings of a headache – due to caffeine withdrawal (likely) or massage toxins (also likely) I do not know. But I started with a big glass of water.
And dove into the Bavarian pretzels!
We tasted seven American IPAs (India Pale Ales) from all across the country. I was really surprised by my choices! I don’t actually love IPAs – I don’t like bitter things! I do love sweet, toffee hops, so I wasn’t surprised to like the one that was least like an IPA. But still, here are my tasting notes:
#1 – Floral, hoppy, perfume, not too bitter, mild = Shalafly
#2 – Butter toffee, peanut brittle, COFFEE, sweet, subtle hops, not bitter = Dogfish 60 Minute
#3 – Sweet toffee, bitterer, no sweetness, a bit flat = Starr Hill Northern Lights
#4 – Very floral, classic IPA, no sweetness, slight toffee, lacking, grassy, higher alcohol = Founders
#5 – Male cat urine (!), dirty, char-grill, earthy = Lagunitas
#6 – Hoppy, very bitter, thin = Green Flash
#7 – All around IPA, slightly bitter, boring = Avery
My favorites totally surprised me! JUST LAST NIGHT Matt had the Dogfish 60 Minute IPA open and I took a sip and said “eww. IPA bitter.” Yet tonight it was my FAVORITE!
Rankings
Best ———————————————————————————————-Worst
Dogfish * Schlafly * Starr Hill * Founders * Green Flash * Avery * Lagunitas
I loved the Lagunitas when we visited – I’m thinking maybe the bottle was tainted tonight!? I do generally like Dogfish and love Schlafly, so those did make sense. Tastings are fun!
Others also took them seriously:
And no so seriously!
The United States of America minus Florida and Alaska!
I meant what I said with IPA for dinner. Plus pretzels and bread. Not my most nutritious night! But very fun.
On the bike ride home, all I could think about was the watermelon in our fridge. I think I was chanting it in my head!!!
It was everything I hoped it would be.

KERF was awarded a 30 under 30 Foodies award!!!
***
Also, not sure what to think about the Google changes. Ultimately I think everything Google does is awesome, but this is such a drastic changes to G-cal so fast! And the new Gmail themes are quite…elementary. Thoughts?!

Now I lay me down to sleep!

I tweeted this to you, but I read that article and it was awesome!! Congrats on the award – totally deserved 🙂
This looks like a perfect night – sometimes you just gotta have beer + bread for dinner!
Congrats on the first month!!!! Glad it was good (next month it’ll be GREAT, I just know it!) 🙂
KathEats says
Thanks all around!!
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
Congratulations on the award! If you didn’t make the list, well that just would seem quite odd.
I hope you have a good rest of your night 🙂
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Ok this is not a good thing for my name
“#7 – All around IPA, slightly bitter, boring = Avery”
At least I am Averie, not Avery 🙂
Bread + beer for dinner? Tha’ts ok. I spent many ‘a night in my 20s drinking my dinner and then washing it down with Triscuits smeared with PB. And I love all the memories 🙂
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
Ha ha, I totally know that feeling when there’s something in the fridge calling to me 🙂
Congrats on the award!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I think bread and watermelon sounds like a wonderful dinner to me!
It is so crazy that after massages the toxins show up….SO cool. ANd kinda gross, ya know?
Angel7 says
Congratulations on closing a good month sale-wise!
Being that word-of-mouth is the best marketing tool, I am sure you will get more and more traffic each month once word gets out even more. Plus, you have a huge following and fan-base. You are a cele-bread-y (LOL) 🙂
Eat more veggies tomorrow to make up for today 🙂

Congrats!
I live vicariously through you tonight! Since going Gluten Free do to being allergic, I miss real bread and real beer. Oh what I wouldn’t do for a Guinness!!! So sad *tear*
Lauren says
Love that USA in the beer 🙂 perfect for 4th of July weekend! Also, I think I am going to join you at body pump tomorrow! Just thought I should let you know…..and I think I convinced my grandpa to bring me to GH for lunch after. Finally get to try your sandwiches and pick up some bread for home. Thanks again for being so welcoming Kath, it means a lot!
Baking 'n' Books says
Congrats on that award! In good company it appears.
Nothing wrong with bread and beer. I wish beer agreed with my stomach more – it bloats me more than salt – but it’s so good after a hot day 😉
Sounds like you were thirsty! Lots of water and craving watermelon! Wish I picked some up at at the store. Darn.
kaila @ healthy helper! says
Not likin the google changes just yet either!
Congrats on the award!

Your description of Lagunitas IPA cracked me up because I love it!
This dinner sounds like my kind of night!
Molly @ RDexposed says
Yay for fermented food items! I’m with you on the IPAs. I just had Green Flash and would also take it over Lagunitas IPA.
My current beer love: Tangerine by Lost Coast. Perfect for summer!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Congrats on the award! That is awesome! That is some serious beer tasting! I feel so bad that my husband can’t have beer anymore. Sounds like a great night Kath!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I kind of love that you drank beer for dinner. You’re my hero.
Bee Goes Bananas says
I wish I liked beer so I could take part in something like this! It looks like so much fun!
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
Dogfish Head 60 minute is delicious 🙂 Try their 90 minute! Also I think a lot of restaurants have lower numbers in the summer months, when people tend to abandon routines. I’ll be interested to see if you’re over your head in sales in the Fall!

I did a quick Google Search this morning of “I hate the new Google Calendar” and quickly found that you can click on the GEAR in the top right corner and switch back to Classic view. Ahhh — much better! 🙂
Christine says
Thank you for the tip! I just went and changed it on my calendar- much better is right!
Lauren says
I’d love an IPA tasting. Every now and then, it’s okay to stray from a balanced meal and I’d say that your tasting was a good reason.
I don’t understand why Google is always making updates to things that work so well. Maybe I just don’t deal well with change.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Congrats on the award, that is seriously awesome!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Veggies for breakfast and bread/beer for dinner – that’s what I call a balance diet! 🙂
Congrats on the 30 under 30!
Kevie says
Do love the posts day after day after day 🙂 And I love that you do 3 per day, it gives me something new and good to read. Congrats on 30 under 30!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
congrats on 30 under 30!
i can’t believe i’m almost in my mid-30’s….ouch.
Seamane says
Thank you guys soooo much for coming! It ws wonderful to have you guys there, and the two of you and your amazing bread were both big hits. I’m already looking forward to the next one. Imperial stouts? Wheats? Dubbels? Barleywines? So many choices!
And congrats on the award! Yay, Kath! 🙂
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
First off… CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is fantastic you 30 under 30!!
Second… I’m not diggin’ the new google format. Google is really funky now and I’m not feeling the new calendar format. The colors are funky and it’s looks retro. I’m usually accepting of change, but this one wasn’t a good change from what I can tell so far.
Third… How fun was y’alls beer tasting?? I looks like y’all had a blast!
Julie H. says
What a fun night! 🙂 Except for the whole #5 beer thing. YUCK!
Congrats on the first month AND making 30 under 30! You are an inspiration, Kath! 🙂
Lorin says
Hi! I had a question about what you do when you don’t eat your bread fast enough and it becomes dry. I got some GH honey whole wheat bread on Sunday but now it’s a bit dry, do you typically make french toast with dry bread or just warm it up or just toss it out and get new bread. I should’ve saw this coming and froze half the loaf but now I think it might be too late. I’ll be coming by next Saturday to your GH! Yee :]
KathEats says
Toast it for sure!
Hilary says
Wow…. A month already…and congrats on the award. Mmmm…bread and great-looking melon too.
J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Congrats on your first month of bakery sales! You are going to be sooo busy around the holidays!! Would not be surprised if they were your busiest months of the year.
I like Google less and less these days; partly for their politics, partly for straying away from simplicity.
Khushboo says
Congrats on the award- super cook! Cliche question but did you ever envision your blog/passion in food would become this big??
KathEats says
Never in a million years!
Hannah says
Those pretzel bites need some serious butter-dunkin’.
Mary-Heather says
I actually laughed out loud at the happy/sad face “reviews” of the IPAs. That’s *hilarious*!!
My favorite IPA is local – Happy Camper IPA, from here in New Mexico. It’s so tasty and fresh and pine-y, and it comes in the cutest cans ever! I love it.
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
I tried an IPA last week and was definitely not a fan!
Kelley says
That “Now I lay me down to sleep” prayer used to scare me when I was little. LOL “What do you mean someone’s going to take my soul while I’m sleeping?! If I die before I wake?! What?!” That’s heavy stuff for a little kid. haha
Foodie says
Sigh. I love bread. Could eat it every day, all day.
Beer? Not so much. 🙂
E says
Congratulations on the successful first month & on the 30 under 30 award! I read the article & wanted to mention this question:
{What do you do to make yourself stand out in such an over-saturated field?
“I aim for consistency and dedication. I hope my readers appreciate the timeliness and thought that goes into each post, day after day after day after day”}
I definitely appreciate your consistency – the frequency & quality of your blog posts is exactly why your blog is my favorite. Keep up the good work! 😀
KathEats says
Thanks 🙂
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
Well done on your first month Kath! Things can only get better 🙂
Bavarian pretzels look good!
tiffany says
YUMM i love IPAs! i also LOVE hops!!!!
i’ll have to try the dogfish 60 and schlafly. what kind of ipas do you recommend if i LOVE hops and dislike maltiness?
KathEats says
That’s a question for Matt since those are the kinds I don’t like!
Christie Inge says
I am so with you on the calendar thing. I logged in while on the phone with a client for the first time and I literally gasped out loud. I hope i get used to it soon. I have heard it has some great features but I agree, the changes were very dramatic with no warning!
Lauren at Keep It Sweet says
Congrats on the award, you deserve it!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Beer and bread for dinner is awesome! I love all the tasting stuff you guys did.. I am sure if made for a super fun evening!
Kristin @ eat healthy. be happy. live well. says
Congrats on the award!!! You definitely deserve it 🙂
As for Google, I never use the calendar, but I love the changes they made to Gmail with the scrolling option bar that goes with you in each message! I’ve been dying for them to create that! I’ll have to check out the new themes and the calendar now.
anna says
Congrats!! 😀 You deserve it.
I <3 IPA's (I'm my mother's daughter). My parents are lucky enough to live near a Dogfish Head alehouse– definitely a perk of going home 🙂 They definitely make complex, one-of-a-kind beers. Mmm now I want one, too bad it's 7 a.m…. Beer for dinner may work out, but I'm going to go ahead and say beer for breakfast would cause a few more problems 😛
Hillary says
The bakery’s already been open a MONTH?! Wow. Time flies! Congrats!!
Lee says
Does male cat urine taste different than female cat urine?! 🙂
Congrats on the award!!
KathEats says
YES! Males have a strong [sexual?] scent
Angela says
Congrats on the first months sales and your award!
I have no idea about IPAs and would totally do the faces in this situation!
What a great idea for something to do though. i think I’ll arrange something similar with my friends.
Summer @ Well-rounded Hippie says
Congrats on the award and yay for completing your first month! I’m learning to appreciate some IPAs. But I had to laugh at the title of this post…that’s what my sister and I had for dinner last Saturday. Only our bread wasn’t quite as good as yours and we had Belhaven Scottish Stout and a few Leinenkugels Summer Shandy (two of my faves). LOVED how you described the beers you tasted!
Jumanah @ Healthy Living in the Middle East says
YAY for successfully completing your first month at the bakery!
Johanna B says
I printed off your 30 under 30 piece to put in the front of my KERF recipes binder. Now I have a photo of you to go with the recipes.
KathEats says
Haha – that’s awesome!
Hope says
Congrats on the award! 🙂 Love the beer tasting! So fun!
Krystina (Organically Me) says
The Languanitas HAD to be a bad batch, because every time I’ve had their IPA I quite liked it.
I do enjoy the Dogfish 60. Have you had their saison du buff? It’s fantastic.
Kim says
I also was an IPA dis-liker, until a restaurant in town (Halifax, Nova Scotia) started brewing almost solely IPAs. The brewer is a bit insane, so the range of IPAs is crazy! I can still only drink one (slowly), but maybe that’s a good thing. I had the pleasure of trying a Dogfish 60 Min. in Toronto last year. Yummy! Boyfriend had a 90 Minute, but that was tooo bitter for me. I’m jealous of the variety of beers you have access to!
Selena says
Congrats on your first month!
I’m so surprised (and excited) to see Dogfish out there. That’s a DE brewery and for some reason I didn’t think it was something non-DE folks knew about. So happy to see a hometown brewery getting the love elsewhere.
Sarah says
I just have to tell you, I wish my life had as much tasty beer in it as yours.
Shana says
I love Dogfish Head (but not the IPA). The brewery and restaurant is just a few minutes from where I work and they have tons of tasty brews. One of my all time faves is called Midas Touch which is flavored with honey. I don’t have any fancy adjectives to describe it other than it is sweet and delicious! PS…I am going to be at the Healthy Living Summit. Perhaps I should bring you a bottle?
KathEats says
I would LOVE to go to a Dogfish brewpub someday and taste all the unique ones!! If you brought ones to HLS I would surely be excited – we could share it for cocktail hour!?
Shana says
Sounds like a plan! If you’re ever in Delaware, definately stop by the brewery for a free tour and samples. And the restaurant has some amazing eats with tons and tons of unique beers and distilled spirits.
Carey @ Positively Blonde says
Yum, love beer tastings! I think the best part was the smiley face ratings lol
Emily says
Funny – we live in Petaluma and Lagunitas is absolutely my dad’s FAVORITE beer. He absolutely loves it, and as far as beers go, I don’t mind it either!
KathEats says
We went to Lagunitas and Petaluma!!! And I was so surprised by last night because I loved ALL of their beers – even the IPA! That’s why I think the batch was tainted:
https://www.katheats.com/let-it-flow-and-i-dont-mean-wine
Emily says
Oh, how funny – that must have been literally just a few weeks before I started reading KERF! Shame you got a bad batch this time 🙁 It’s usually REALLY good stuff!
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
Glad you liked Schlafly! Was it the AIPA? That is one of their best beers, but truly they don’t make anything bad. St. Louis has become this craft beer mecca recently – we’ve had like 6 craft breweries open up in the last six months!
