If I knew breakfast was going to be this easy I would have spent 10 more minutes at the gym!! My night-before smoothie was a great success – not only did it not separate at all, the raw oats I tossed in didn’t interrupt anything and I think the flavor actually improved!! I can taste the oatmeal dough flavor this morning and couldn’t last night. I guess I’d call this a "muesli smoothie" because the raw oats got to soak?! I did give it a big stir with a long iced tea spoon, but I really don’t’ think there was much separation.
I did NOT want to go to the gym this morning – I wanted to keep sleeping. But I did what always works: I visualized myself going at Winthrop after lab, then I pictured myself going to the Express Y before class and decided I would rather have my afternoon free. So I went. And am so glad I did! It was quick – 35 mins on the Stairs and 3 of abs – but worth it.
Smoothie ingredients:
- ~1.5 cups frozen mixed berries (which my professor gave away after lab!)
- 1/2 cup plain Stonyfield yogurt
- 3/4 cup skim milk
- 1/4 cup raw rolled oats
I’m taking the second half of breakfast, a baked oat bar, for 10:00 snack too.
Hand Update:
My right hand is killing me – I couldn’t do push-ups this morning! I’m going to take a day off of answer>ing questions , so please save lengthy questions for a few days so I can rest the spacebar thumb 😥

kind of a strange question … but for ladies with long hair… do you wear your hair up when you sleep? does anyone know if this is good/bad? thanks!
Tina says
Kath, my wrist was killing me a couple weeks ago too– it was a tingly pain. I got a 10-minute should/neck massage at work a few days later, and the pain in my wrist went away the next day. It must have loosened-up something. It could be a coincidence, but maybe a short massage would do wonders for your wrist too? I’m sure you could use one, especially after the craziness of summer school!
caitlinbo says
jenn c- i’ve heard the recommendation for long haired girls is to loosely wear your hair up when you sleep, as it prevents breakage from your hair getting tangled as you move around, but you should NOT tie it up too tightly (ever) as that causes a whole host of other issues.
mh says
jenn, i have long hair and I’ve always heard wearing a rubber band in it (ponytail) breaks off your hair and isn’t good for it, so I always put it down right before I get into bed..even if it is really dirty and looks awful!
Betsy in Pittsburgh says
I have a lot of hair, and I mean A LOT. I try to always wear it down… sleeping or not. I went through a high & tight ponytail phase in high school and it created a mess of fly aways and damage.
Betsy says
I tend to wear my hair up when I sleep, especially in the summer. However, I’ll often pull out the rubber band when I’m sleeping.
I’m sooo into muesli these days that these oatmeal shakes are starting to actually look good!
Becky in MD says
I def. wear my hair up when I sleep. I couldn’t get a brush through it in the morning if I didn’t.
Jen says
Poor Thumb =(
Have a nice day!!!!!!!!!

jennC –
I have long hair too – but I always sleep with it down. I also heard that wearing a rubber band causes hair breakage.
Plus, it’s not very comfortable while I sleep. I move around a lot – and the rubber band would just be this annoying lump.
Also, around the house – I just loosely twist my hair up and secure it with a claw clip. This way – I am not always having a rubber band in the same place (which is very bad). I just read about it a few days ago – in Shape or something.
JennC says
thanks for all the hair suggestions.. i don tknow what to do! its so long but sometimes at night i get irritated with it down, but im starting to notice that hair in the back of my head is thinner where i always have a pony tail. EEEK i def. need to break this habit!

Oh no!!! Sorry about the injury. It is so frustrating when you are unable to workout because of a physical ailment.
I had a little hand injury last night too, so I am with you skipping lifting and heaving typing for a little while.
And I think I may be stealing that smoothie recipe, soaked oats sound so tasty!
Heather says
Sorry about the injury 🙁 I hope your hand feels better soon!
The smoothie looks delicious- now I want one!
Sidi says
Bandage you hand and give it some rest. If it hurts take an Aspirin, it really helps.
Get well soon!
Lraep17 says
I also have hair that’s way too long and thick to leave down while I sleep. I put it a loose braid and it seems to solve the problem. Might work for others too 🙂
Brittney says
JennC- Could you try wearing a scrunchie instead of a rubber band? I have thick, naturally curly hair that’s kind of long and I’ve never really had a problem with scrunchies.
Becky in MD says
I also wanted to say that you are definitly motivational…if I knew I would have an extra 10 minutes, I would have slept for 10 more minutes, not stayed at the gym!
Michelle says
I’m with you, Lraep17. I have naturally curly hair and pull it back in a loose braid before bed time. Works like a charm!
Tina says
I wear my hair in a lose ponytail every night. I can’t stand sleeping with my hair all over the place. The elastic bands that I use don’t seem to cause any damage to my hair.
Amy S. says
That looks like a great to-go smoothie container. I’m trying to find the perfect one that won’t leak all over me!
I’m loving making smoothies but sometimes have to have them on the run
Where did you get it?
Kath says
Amy –
Target 🙂 You can’t drink through the top though (only watery liquids) so I just remove it and use a straw.

I’ve been curious about your oatmeal smoothies, so today I finally made one. Mmm! Thanks for such a good tip.
