Woke up to……
SNOW!
From the looks of it, we have 3-4 inches already!
Guess what Thursday’s high is? 70*!
Being the Southern belle that I am, I heated up my coffee (leftover from yesterday) and took out my Sunday finest mugs, frolicked in the snow, nearly slipped and plopped the hot coffee right into the ice.
CRACK.
My favorite handled mug now has a crack circling the bottom 🙁 D’OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take II.
Brushed the snow off my thin sweater, tramped clumps of it through the kitchen, got a new mug, shed a tear and decided I best stay inside during precarious weather.
-
- Overnight oats – chilly on a chilly day.
- 1/3 cup Holly’s Oatmeal
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/3 cup greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- Pinch salt
- 1/2 banana
- Wild Squirrel PB – on the bottom
- Honey clusters on the top
I thought it would be like oats in a jar to find the nut butter on the bottom, but you just can’t recreate OIAJ.
Despite the snow contamination, the coffee was still hot!
Have a safe day!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
The snow looks beautiful! 🙂 I’m jealous. We haven’t had any snow here which is weird for PA. We are supposed to get to 70 degrees on Thursday! Crazy!
Sorry about your mug! Breakfast still looks yummy.
KhushbOo says
A snowy day definitely calls for some hot cocoa 🙂
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
It snowed here in Ohio too! It is supposed to be in the 60’s starting Wednesday, and was in the 70’s this time last week. The weather is so strange!
Andrea says
Aww so sorry about your mug 🙁 I love those mugs. We are having similar weather here… so weird!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Wow! That’s a great snow. Wish we could get some of that… this weather is nuts!
I’ve tried to recreate the end of a PB jar before too. Not the same. 🙁
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Aww man! Sorry about the mug…that stinks. Let’s keep the rest of the day crack free. Um, cracks in MUGS…well, and plumbers/low rise jean crack too because really, no one wants to see that either.
Cm @ Lazy Healthy says
I woke up to snow too! But… that’s no surprise in my area. Only a few more weeks until spring!
HRCK the Herald says
So beautiful! We haven’t gotten a lick of snow in DC yet. I kind of hope it stays west of us! 🙂
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
we just got a HUGE snow storm last wednesday – friday, and now today’s high is 60* and sunny! crazy how unpredictable the weather can be.
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
Must be a bad day for glass jars — I broke one while loading the dishwasher this morning. Sounds like you handled it better than I did, though mine involved shattered glass on the floor, an eight month-old baby, and the stress of trying to get out the door to work. Hoping Monday gets better :-/
Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot says
That darn snow! At least you won’t have it for long and you’re breakfast survived your slip! And even if it was not quite OIAJ, it still looked mighty pretty!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
We got snow yesterday too, although only a dusting! This winter’s random changes in weather is crazy! And good to know about re-creating OIAJ. I’ve considered adding nut butter to an old jar, but figured it just wouldn’t be the same…
Emily @ the doodlebug says
Ahh! I almost fell in our parking lot this morning on ice! Be careful!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oh no! Sorry to hear about your mug Kath, the things we do for good photos, hey? I’m impressed that you ventured out into the snow for those shots. I thought we were coming to the end of our winter too, but we got a ton of snow over the weekend and now it’s COLD! Here’s to hoping spring is near!
Cait's Plate says
It’s always so crazy to wake up to snow completely unexpected! Such a bummer that you favorite mug has a crack in the bottom!! I HATE when that happens 🙁 Stay warm today!
Cosmos says
I just had to laugh at your post this morning. As a Minnesota resident, I have a completely different view of snow and wouldn’t rush outside for the photo op!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
How fun!! Enjoy the snow.
Stephanie @ The Travelling Tastebuds says
Can’t believe you STILL have snow in MARCH! I love snow 🙂
Angel7 says
It snowed here as well! But by tomorrow I believe it is supposed to be in the 50’s. What is up with the unpredictable weather?

Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Oh, how beautiful! I love looking out and seeing everything snow covered! No snow here…just sunny skies and a wickedly cold wind! Run today was bitterly cold! We are due for rain on Thursday…what is with the weather system!
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
Guess what Thursday is? My bday! The weather gods are pulling through for me this year (well, fingers crossed…who knows what shenanigans they may come up with between now and then). Can’t believe y’all got that much snow and we got none.
KathEats says
Happy Bday!
Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach says
Oh, the lengths you’ll go to just to take fun pictures for us! 😉 sorry about your mug! Have fun in the snow!
Matt says
I tell you all the time about hot glass and cold liquids!
KathEats says
But what about hot glass and SNOW!?
Krista says
I’m from Wisconsin, so I feel qualified to answer this… Snow is cold. You’re welcome 😉
KathEats says
Thanks for the clarification 🙂 Our Southern snow is already melted.
katie @KatieDid says
aww man! In the name of food photography.
Amy @ What Jew Wanna Eat says
Wow it is 70 in Texas today! I can’t remember the last time I saw snow!
Kelly @ Vegolosophy says
WOW lots of snow! Looks beautiful!
Nicole says
I’m so jealous of your snow! We have not had a flake of snow in Charlotte this winter. 🙁
Jasper Naomi @ crunchylittlebites says
Kath! I am so happy that you’re ok! be careful in that snow! OSG almost pulled her groin while shooting her header in the snow on her porch!!!!!!!!!!!! and now you! I am sorry about your mug 🙁 when I visit C ville for the marathon on April 7th I might need to pack one up for you and wrap is in baker’s twine (cutely, of course) and drop it off for you@!
KathEats says
🙂 That would be much appreciated
Lindsay @ Fuel My Family says
I have tried rubbing peanut butter on the sides of my bowl or mug to recreate oiaj and it really just isn’t the same for some reason! I can’t beleive you have snow. I am on the coast of NC and its chilly today but nothing that would make snow!
Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot says
Haha, this post makes me laugh! Even the “have a safe day” after your fall… ahh! Be careful! And check out thrift stores! I actually just bought two of those glass mugs at a thriftstore… maybe you’ll get lucky?!
Catherine says
Hey Kath! I am looking to “go green” with my cleaning supplies. Are you still using and loving Shaklee? Do you feel comfortable using these products while pregnant and eventually with a newborn? Is there a starter kit I should start with? I remember you using a few basics and can’t remember what those were. Thanks!
KathEats says
Yup!! I like it best with peppermint essential oil 🙂
The Basic H, bottle kit and Scour Off are the 3 things I recommend most, although this basic starter kit includes them all if you want an all-in-one: http://katheats.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=89108
Catherine says
Great, thanks! I was reading your old Home Clean Home post, and was wondering if you ever ended up getting the Basic G and if it was worth it. My fiancee is a germaphobe and would want something anti-bacterial! Also, I was looking at the starter kit- do you use the dishwasher and laundry detergents a lot? Or do you think I would be okay just getting the mini-kit to start? It seems like you talk a lot more about the items included in the mini-kit as opposed to the starter-kit. Thanks for your response!
KathEats says
Yes, get the Basic G. I use it in toilets and germy places that need sanitizing. I don’t use essential oils with it because it has a little bit of a medicinal smell, but it’s effective.
The laundry detergent was great, but I didn’t loooove the smell, so I’ve been using soap nuts with essential oils or Method – I alternate between them based on smell mood. I’m such a smell person 🙂
I used the detergent for a while, but went back to Cascade because I felt it worked a little better in the liquid + dry cubes.
Catherine says
Great! That is really helpful! Last question- should I get the unscented version if i want to add the oils? What does their “regular scent” smell like? I’m a smell person, too, and love the idea of making my own scent!!
KathEats says
No problem 🙂 The Basic H doesn’t really have a smell, and I got the regular. Perhaps you could do the unscented laundry and add smells?
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
Ugh hate it when that happens to glass! Waking up to snow is so beautiful though 🙂
Blessing {Working Mom Journal} says
Its just started snowing here as well! I was wondering how come it was snowing in Va and not here in Ohio and then I looked outside and its snowing like crazy. Have a great day preggo lady
Lindsay @ Running the Windy City says
Oh no, sorry about your mug! I’d blame it on being tired in the morning- once I decided I wanted to take coffee (hot) with me to-go but all my travel mugs were dirty so I figured I could pour the coffee into a plastic cup and bring that instead. Of course the plastic cup melted and I was left scrambling to move the melty cup into the sink to avoid major spillage! Not my finest moment at all 🙂
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
WOW!! Snow? I feel like you were just posting about how gorgeous the weather has been… this weather is crazy!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
I am SO jealous that you have snow! I was so hoping that it would go further north- I could have really used at least a delay today. I’m now convinced that we won’t get any at all. I can’t remember ever having a school year where we didn’t use a single snow day- or even have a delay! Everyone is feeling it here and going nuts. That being said… I’d take a 70 degree day happily.
I’ve tried re-creating oaij several times, and you just do it. I once spread sunflower seed butter on all sides of a jar- and it was close- but not quite there. I think that the original jar somehow retains the flavor from keeping the nut butter in it for so long. It just can’t be achieved over night!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Oh no, sorry about your glass!! At least your coffee stayed intact!!
Michelle says
What size jar do you typically use for this? (I’m thinking about the right serving size…)
KathEats says
I honestly don’t even know the volume of that jar, but my standard ball jars are 1.5 cups plus extra room at the top
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Sorry about the snow AND that your fave mug has a crack. Double whammy 🙁
Stay warm, Kath!
~Christy @ wonderofallthings says
Looks like home to me 😀 LOVE IT! Enjoy it, it doesn’t sound like it will last long…
Dawn @ Blonde on a Mission says
No disrespect, but you say that you and Matt are ‘science nerds’ but you don’t know that taking glass from hot to cold abruptly will crack it?
KathEats says
well my point is that I know not to put hot liquids in cold liquids – but my brain just wasn’t associating snow with cold/ice
Amy says
that’s the funniest reply ever
Carin says
Hey Kath , blame the baby brain… it won’t be the last time you do something silly! 😛
dee says
I can’t believe you guys got that much snow! I love the pictures in the snow. But then again, I have a thing with the color white. There’s just something about it! ♥
Sydney@ Nutrition with Sydney says
So funny that you guys have all that snow, and out here in Montana we have 60 degrees and sunshine! The weather can be so funny sometimes!
Megan @ Megan's Munchies says
The snow looks beautiful! That sounds like Texas…snow one day and 70s expected the next. WE haven’t had any snow this year. It is already in the 70s here this morning!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
we had some snow here in chicago as well! thought we were home free for the year, guess not 🙂
Tracy says
I think HEAB used to transfer her nut butters to new jars to allow her to have OIAJ whenever she wanted to!
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
wowwww it looks prettty!!!! Like Narnia or somethin’! The weather’s been so interesting lately! Yesterday the sun was blazing like it was summer in Mexico, and it was prob. in the mid-90’s. 0_0 Now it’s in the 50’s. I’m confused! haha, I guess the whole US is drastically changing.
Hillary says
Yikes! We barely got flurries here in Baltimore—how did you guys end up with this much snow today?! Can’t wait for that high of 68 on Thursday. Bring. It.
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Oh no, I’m sorry your mug cracked 🙁 I hate when things like that happen!! I hope your day has only improved since then.
Linds @ Linds Eats says
Your backyard looks like mine usually does. We’ve had an unusually mild winter in Ontario this season… and I don’t miss the snow at all! Hopefully it melts soon for you 🙂
Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) says
Ugh, snow is a regular occurrence for me as I live in Canada on the prairies. I can’t wait for spring!
Erin says
We just got back from a C’ville trip on Sun and I’m counting myself lucky that we had such beautiful weather to enjoy Monticello in – Don’t think it would have been the same with the snow (beautiful but not as walkable). We also stopped by Great Harvest and picked up some Naturally Nutty. A little sad that you guys close on Sunday because after tasting it we wanted MORE!
KathEats says
Sorry to have missed you!
Alicia says
We woke up to snow here too (in central Indiana). It was all gone by mid day though.
So sorry that you lost your favorite mug. A baby brain casualty. 😉
Nescett @ bananaoats says
Awww love it! Snow is so pretty when it’s fresh and new. 70 on Thursday? Your weather is nearly as wacky as ours.
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Oh, no, not snow! What a shame about your glass mug. I saw some at Goodwill the other day. Maybe you should try looking at thrift stores to get a replacement.
