Still loving Anne’s pancakes for breakfast! Mazen gave up on eggs two years ago after I fed them to him for breakfast for way too many days in a row, so French toast and these pancakes are the best ways for me to get him to eat eggs. I need to give hard-boiled eggs a try again soon….
For workouts lately, I’ve been balancing twice-a-week strength class with twice-a-week Afterburn (our crazy cardio step jumping class) and indoor soccer. I haven’t been on too many outdoor runs lately, but I’ve been throwing in some hot yoga instead. I usually make it to 3 of the 4 classes, one soccer game and one wild card. Plus a day off in there.
Leftovers for lunch: whipped sweet potatoes, fish, grapes, and Red, Hot, Blues. A creative mix to hit all the texture requirements : )
A friend gave Mazen this paint-your-own birdhouse for Christmas, and it made for a fun little afternoon activity. I found some that you can buy in bulk on Amazon – four for $10. They don’t come with the paints, but most kids already have some paints.
I’m trying to find more good indoor activities now that the pools are green and full of leaves. This Star Wars play-doh set that Santa bought at Amazon is awesome!! We have gotten hours out of it. I much prefer sitting and making soothing play-doh shapes to rough housing 😉
Ahhhh fresh play-doh! The nostalgic smell!
Tacos for dinner was a big hit!
I’ve never seen Mazen eat anything that wasn’t pizza so enthusiastically!
Mama’s version:
Have a great rest of your week friends!

I loooove the smell of play dough! It’s always my favorite activity to do with my niece and nephew.
I’m so impressed with your exercise routine. I miss being more regular with my workouts, but I’m in stage of life where I get a headache just thinking about when to fit it in. Thanks for the motivation!

Sometimes you just gotta step back a little : )

Gah! I can’t wait to get back to playing soccer! I’ve been missing it so much! But playing while pregnant is probably not the best idea. Thank you for all the wonderful lunch ideas! I love mixing textures and you always have really great ideas!

I’m going to be sad if and when I have to take a break for pregnancy or any other reason. I’ve been playing year round for three years now!

I’ve been enjoying building Legos together with my four year old! It’s really relaxing…someone bought us a Lego Junior set for his birthday and we would build the vehicles together during the little kids nap times. He felt grownup working with the small pieces and I read the instructions to him/helped with a few hard bits. Lots of fun and a good sense of accomplishment for him 🙂
KathEats says
Yes, I helped M build a Lego City police station he got for Christmas, and although I never really played with Legos as a girl, it was very relaxing.

When I was a kid, my mom and I would make homemade play-doh! The colors were never as vibrant as the name brand version, but it was always fun to have a fresh batch when the existing one started to dry out, and I could make my own colors (with food coloring). I also had a set of plastic cookie cutters that were part of my play-doh toys. It wasn’t until years later that I realized they were cookie cutters for food! I can ask her for the recipe…I think it was just a basic combination of flour, salt, and water.
KathEats says
I have this recipe and want to make some with essential oils! I think the mixing process would be as fun as the end result (although I think it involves heat so Mazen couldn’t do that part)

Omg I haven’t taken a step class in forever!!!!! Glad the kid has it right pizza and tacos are my favorite too!

Where is that fruit holder from?
KathEats says
It’s this one. Makes such a great fruit and bread stand because of all the levels.

It is sooo relaxing to play with as an adult!

Your comment about the nostalgic smell of PlayDoh is funny. I could smell it as soon as I saw that picture. I remember being so excited to open fresh Play Doh that had that great texture. Before all the colors got all smushed together by my brothers and sisters. Being from a family of 9 it didn’t take long!
KathEats says
Haha! I have surprisingly been able to keep Mazen’s colors well separated despite the merging of them during Star Wars creations : )

Kath, your workouts sound so amazing, and I must admit I’m a little jealous right now. Because of life circumstances right now, I am lucky to get in two mediocre workouts a week. I have a very, very busy 20 month-old who must be watched at all times. My school age boys keep me busy with their sports and school events. I work full time, and my husband has a very demanding career and can’t be home to watch the baby while I run or do an at home workout. I live in Ohio so stroller running and family bike rides aren’t possible right now. I considered joining a gym but feel too guilty leaving my daughter with yet another caregiver. My friends suggested asking the nanny to stay an extra hour once a week, but she already does so much for us I am really dragging my feet asking her. Do your readers have any advice on have they manage to get their workouts in?
KathEats says
Hi Meghan, It sounds like you have a lot on your plate! I would just do your best to make those two mediocre workouts the two most challenging workouts you can and then try to add in two more kid friendly ones when either the weather is nice enough to go outside or when your kids might find it fun to watch you dance around like crazy for a high intensity 20 minutes. Can you walk on your lunch break? Or take two 15 minute walks during the workday? Every little bit counts, and so while it might be unrealistic for you to do an hour at a gym everyday, the more you can sneak in the better.

Try HIIT intervals- you can change up between strength and cardio so you feel like you’re fitting it all in. It’s the best bang for your buck, time-wise!

I love the smell of Play Doh too!

What are your general thoughts on snacking for kids? My daughter is just 1.5 yrs old but it seems that most kids around her age get snacks. I don’t give her snacks because I’ve never seen any indications that she needs food in between meals. (She gets milk anyway). I guess my question is, will it be obvious when she needs more food? I mean, she’s in the 80% for weight so I think she’s getting enough! LOL. I also think not having snacks helps with mealtime. She usually eats veggies even if she’s not too excited about it because she’s hungry. Im sure this will change as she gets older, so I might as well enjoy it while I can!
KathEats says
I think it will change as she gets older too, but at 80 percentile I wouldn’t add them unless she seems hungry. Humans definitely don’t need snacks.
