Mornin’!
I slept until 7:30 – ’twas nice!! And as soon as I woke up I realized I’d already been working for 4 solid hours the day before. Crazy thoughts they were.
Stumbled out and did some computer work while I waited to get hungry. Some days I wake up starving; others I wait 30 minutes or so. I think definitely in relation to the size and time of the previous night’s dinner.
Put together a breakfast bowl at 8:30
- 1 cup greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup dry oats
- Mango
- Blackberries
- ~1/3 cup Quaker Oatmeal Squares
- Kodiak Cakes Red Raspberry syrup
- Bear Naked Peak Granola
- 1 tsp flax
- 1 tbsp Sunflower butter
These guys made breakfast extra tasty:
Joe.
Today is wide open, but also I have a long to-do list. I got my approval to take the RD exam yesterday!!!!! Now I just have to study, study, study. I also purchased HealthNut Em’s RD In A Flash cards, which are awesome! If you know the RD world, you know Jean Inman. But I don’t learn by staring at a thick binder. I have to DO things to learn. So the pre-made flashcards are a lifesaver. I’m getting about 50% right on the first try, so that’s good news. No idea when I will be ready, but I’m going to study hard in the next few weeks.
SYTYCD tonight!!
Abby says
Good luck studying! I am sure you will do very well! 🙂
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
How often do you work at the bakery?
Kath says
We don’t have a bakery yet.
We haven’t moved to Charlottesville yet.
We are opening our bakery this fall/winter.
Simply Life says
Good luck studying!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
That looks like an awesome breakfast bowl! And very exciting you got approved to take the test!!
sweetersalt says
Good luck studying – and yum that red raspberry sauce looks delightful.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
That bowl looks so refreshing! I need to get some fresh peaches. I haven’t had any yet this year, which is a shame since I live in Georgia for goodness sake! Good luck with the studying!
Marilou @ Mostly Healthy says
I love flash cards to study , as inventing songs or drawings pretty tables 🙂 To me, it’s the most effective way to learn and remember the stuff!
Good luck!
Annie @ stronghealthyfit says
I’m the same way, I don’t soak up information unless I incorporate something else other than reading into my studying! Even moving flash cards around is helpful. I usually like to re-write the info. Good luck!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
That is so exciting! You are that much close to becoming an RD. 🙂
Evan Thomas says
You’re going to rock the exam with the right studying
Nicole, RD says
How exciting! I remember how nerve-wracking it was to take the RD exam. But you’ll do great!!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
It just took me about five minutes to figure out SYTYCD. 🙂 I kept trying to make it something about a smoothie.
Congrats on the exam approval! I do best with flash cards too.
Ellen says
That breakfast looks AMAZING! I am so envious it’s a little insane.
Amanda says
You deserve a good day off from hard work yesterday!
Cara says
You’re poor little body, that’s a big transition to make
Holly says
Good luck on your studying. I also did better in school with flashcards and interactive learning than with staring at a big big binder.
tanyasdaily says
Your photography looks great!
Heather says
I am also a flash card person – or I need to write things out a few times!
Good luck with your to-do list!
Brittany @ A Healthy Slice of Life says
Flash cards make studying fuN! …Well… more bearable 😉
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Another delicious breakfast. I really want some of those Quaker squares and the bear naked trail mix.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
flash cards are great for me, but i usually learn from MAKING them…something about writing down the info really helps, and since i have a photographic memory i always picture the page and can find the answer there 🙂 keep up the great work kath!
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete.wordpress.com says
Heather I totally agree with you about MAKING the flashcards. It definitely helped me to read the info, write the info and then memorize the info.
Daniel says
I learn best by reading, writing and repeating, but I think maybe this year I should give flash cards a try… I hear organic chem. is “supposed to be hard.”
I’m sure you’ll do wonderful on the exam with all of the hard work and dedication you’ve put into becoming and RD so far though. ^_^
Ashley@thehungryscholar says
I miss flash cards, well making them. Good luck studying!
Janna (Janna's Keeping it Real) says
Good luck with your studying!!!
That bowl-o-fruit just screams summer! Yum!
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
Haha I used the Jean Inman binder and just staring at the decade-old typewriter font drove me crazy. Just remember- your internship prepared you! The internship is way harder than the exam. Just make sure you know foodservice stuff 🙂
Camille says
Have a great day off!
shannon (the daily balance) says
good luck studying – you got started right with that delicious fuel!!
Marisa @ Loser for Life says
Flash cards are the best way for me to learn something, too! I even put my healthy eating mantras on them to “study”!
Yum to breakfast 🙂
Lauren Slayton says
OK it’s totally unfair that back in the day I had to make those flash cards myself (and spend a day with Jean herself). Good luck studying for and taking, unless things have changed, an exam that has nothing to do with being an RD. I like the breakfast bowl concept. It’s funny to think that your bowl is my blender pre mixing my smoothie. Haven’t tried the peak by Bear Naked but I’m now going to.
Caitlyn @ A Spoonful of Life says
Way to start the day off right…a beautiful bowl of goodness!
Good luck studying! The end is almost in sight!
Wei-Wei says
Red raspberry syrup?! Um, holy yum! Good luck studying – I think your breakfast will help a lot 😉
Wei-Wei
Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine says
I like flashcards as well. Good luck whenever you take your exam, you’ll do great!
Chelsey says
Yum breakfast bowl! Sometimes I’m not hungry when I wake up, but I still manage to eat anyways 🙂
Megan (Braise The Roof) says
Exciting news about your exam- congrats! The end is near…and maybe you can take those flashcards outside? At least you have the summer to study wherever you want! 🙂
kraileen says
I am so excited about Great Harvest coming to Charlottesville! I’ve missed having one near my house!!!
Courtney R. says
Oh the RD exam!! You probably have an advantage with the food service with all the prep for Great Harvest. I remember that was the hardest part for me! The nice thing is that you take it and if you keep up your CEU’s you never have to take it again!!!! YAAAY!!
Julz @ freshman 5k says
I always wake up starving!!!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Good luck studying for the exam!!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Oh my goodness…perfect breakfast, in every way. Love it! 😀
Best of luck with the studying! I’ll have to check out the flashcards too, as I’ll be studying, studying, studying next year too. 😀
Lauren says
Good luck on your exam. You’re gonna do great!
Kerri @ Kerri Turns into a Zombie says
I love that you can take flash cards anywhere.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Good luck studying!! I can’t stare at stuff either…flash cards are the way I memorize things best!
Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) says
Does the raspberry syrup taste like syrup or like a fresh raspberry sauce? It looks SO good!!
Kath says
Like a fresh raspberry sauce!
Alyson says
Awesome food! Definitely makes me want to go buy some berries and other stuff. Yummm… 😀 Also, great photos. I love the mug you have for your coffee! 😀 I’ve been dying to buy some more dishes! Haha. I love eccentric dishes. Also, because I seem to say love a lot, I LOVE SYTYCD! 😀 Addicted in simple terms. It’s the best! Hehehe.
Thanks for this post. Love finding great blogs. Very inspiring for me being a new blogger!
Carrie says
You have the *most* amazing breakfasts that I’ve ever seen in the blog world. It’s inspiring.
Maryann says
How exciting! Good luck with all the studying! It will be a couple years until I take my RD exam. Your breakfast looks so delish!

Good news about the exam – have fun studying! After yesterday you should enjoy a nice, relaxing day today. Still can’t believe how early you got up to go to the bakery!!
RhodeyGirl Tests says
Is your body confused today? I am curious to see if your body wanted lunch extra early today!
Love that breakfast bowl- it looks tasty, healthy, and satisfying!
Rae says
Good luck on the RD exam! I got my approval (so long ago!) while on vacation in Hawaii after my internship – I studied for 3 days then took the test at the University of Hawaii in Oahu (I’m from Massachusetts!). It’s a great story to tell 🙂 Honestly, you’ll do fine no matter how long you study. Go RDs!
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
I had the same insatiable hunger too! I definitely attributed it to being tired. This weekend I got a solid 8 (or more!) hours each night, then come Sunday night only about 5…and not solid either. Hence, I was a bottomless pit. I can’t believe how much sleep affects hunger!
Sami says
I’ve been curious about the Oatmeal Squares…what do you think of them, nutritionally? Are they filling?
Kath says
I think they are just OK. I really don’t there are many perfect cold cereals. I consider these a “once in a while treat myself to a box” treat. I also prefer to use them as toppings than a base.
Liza @ Health Nutting says
That looks delicious! SYTYCD is the besttttt, love it so much, can’t wait!
Liz says
Have you (or maybe any other of your HLS bloggers) ever thought about doing a tutorial on photography with an SLR? Kind of how you’ve done Gmail tutorials. All of you bloggers are so incredibly talented with photography. I just got my SLR a few months ago and the manuals are impossible to learn from. If you ever get a few seconds of free time (I know, like that’s gonna happen during this crazy time for you!) you should really think about it!
Kath says
I would love to. I have SO MANY videos I want to do!! I intend to work on a lot of them this fall once we’re settled in Cville.
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
I love notecards too. It’s amazing how much you can learn in a short amount of time from them.
Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf says
That breakfast bowl looks so delicious and colorful! I haven’t mustered up the nerve to put raw oats in my yogurt first thing in the morning (I really enjoy the thick pudding-like consistency of overnight oats in a jar!), but perhaps soon! I’m getting low on my peanut butter. 😉
Jess says
That breakfast looks amazing! Love the raw oats in yogurt, too.
Good luck studying! I find flashcards are the only thing that help me really learn stuff for exams, especially the science and clinical courses…
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
That is an awesome breakfast bowl! I love when they have tons of diferent components like that. It makes them so fun to eat!
Good luck studying. 🙂
Sonya says
I’m new to your site. I’m definitely inspired by your posts. What type of “brain” food will you be consuming as you prep for the big test?
Tammy says
Good luck with studying. I love to take my flashcards to the gym and go through them while on an eliptical machine. It gives me a good 45mins-1hr. solid info. Just a thought!!
Tammy says
oh, ps…breakfast looked AWESOME!!!
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
That looks so tasty! Raspberry sauce sounds so yummy.

Hi Kath! I love your blog and have been reading since the beginning! I am currently an RD in Canada and am moving to Denver, CO on Friday with my husband and Golden Doodle! I will also be writing the US RD certification exam, I know you keep mentioning the RD binder you are studying and those flash cards now, I know things are a little different in the US and though I have been an RD in Canada for 2 years new help is always welcome. If I could buy the cards off of you after you write ( i am writing in August or September I believe) or let me know the binder you are referring to, and of course if you are ever interested in any Canadian info:) Just email me and let me know! Keep up the amazing work:)
Kath says
Hey Nicole,
I don’t have your email, but I’m definitely interested in selling the cards to you. I’d give you a deal because I got them second hand as well 🙂
K
Nicole Granville says
Hey Kath, that sounds great. My email is [email protected]. Thanks!
Hannah says
Good luck studying!! WeE know you’ll be stellar!
Emily says
Hi Kath! Glad the cards have been helpful so far! I think you’re pretty much set if you’re getting that many right without even studying! 🙂
