The day is moving onward: I’m feeling better, we got in a great run, and my todo list is shrinking.
We set out around 11:45 on a run – and were thrilled to find 70* weather outside!! It is really the most perfect fall day one could ever ask for. We ran about 4.5 miles and came home to realize the husband was late for work!! I packed in a great lunch while he showered and he was off.
I took my time doing some cleaning, showering, and then making lunch.
I felt obligated to eat more of Thursday’s pumpkin chili but today I opened a jar of Bone Suckin’ BBQ sauce and added a tbsp of that to my bowl. LOVE this stuff.
We still have another serving of soup left after this!
I also popped some kale chips leftover from Becca’s visit into the oven.
And rounded the meal with a tasting plate of stuff: pear, piece of pepper with hummus, pickle and bread crackers.
Plans for the rest of the day include tons of organic chem (quiz tomorrow!) and grocery store planning + shopping. I’m thinking about biking to EarthFare, which will take me an extra hour. But it’s so pretty outside and I do try to maintain my fuel free weekends…. we’ll see!

Bone Suckin’ Sauce is the best bbq sauce ever. It made me smile to see that you’d added it to your plate. Not enough people know about this stuff! Get the word out! haha.

Anything named “Bone Sucking Sauce” has to be good…
Moran says
Haha the name is hilarious!
I am so jealous of the weather! We are in the 40s here!

kath-
do you anticipate more simple meals? i would love to join you in cutting back on food spending. sadly, the local farmer’s market is closing soon–but wal-mart sells NC produce for cheap, so that will be a good substitute.
please keep us posted on this. i think it’s a great goal. –rk

Hey Kath.
I was just wondering how you stood on the whole protein debate. I’ve had professors and fellow dietetic interns on both sides of the debate… some say that our bodies are better off with 1-1.5 g/kg and others say that we only need .8g/kg and anymore is useless.
WHen you were counting calories, did you pay any attention to protein?
Actually, I’m really curious about what anyone thinks about this.

Oh I would have killed for that weather on my run today.
Sometimes when I am freezing on a run I say to myself…I AM ON A HOT BEACH, I AM ON A HOT BEACH. lol…sadly, it doesn’t help much.
Glad your day is going better- I knew the run would help!

How awesome was the weather today? I walked home from the gym just now in capris and a sleeveless workout top and it felt great! I hope it stays like this down here all week!

I just had a “Kath Dinner,” Risoto with Butternut Squash and ‘shrooms with Kale Chips. My Kale chips burned up, but the risoto was awesome! Thanks, Kath for helping my family enjoy seasonal food!

KatieMoo, I am not an RD, but what I learned is…
— .8g/kg BW/day for adults 19 and older
— .8g/kg BW + 25g/day for pregnancy and lactation
— up to 1.2g/kg BW/day for endurance athletes
— up to 1.8g/kg BW/day for strength athletes
— National Academy of Sciences recommendation: less than or equal to 2xRDA for all individuals
— Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR): 10-35% kcal from protein
IMO, consuming excess kcal (be it from CHO, PRO, FAT, or ETOH) is counterintuitive when it comes to weight loss. I think a lot of ppl erroneously believe that you can eat as much protein you want and not gain wt… and while it’s true that amino acids can not be stored directly in the body, they can be deaminated and converted into glucose (via gluconeogenesis), and then stored as glycogen– or triglyceride.

Sounds like you recovered well from a full tummy! I hate going to bed full too. It just doesn’t feel good. But with your breakfast, and this lunch – you would have to feel better!! I hope you have a chance to get everything done that you want – yay – for the extra hour 🙂

Hi kath!
OK, this is not relevant to your last post but we were having a discussion about HFCS at dinner and I was like, Oooh! I bet kath knows! So i don’t know if it’s politic to just ask you nutrition questions here but I thought I’d shoot:
what is the difference between consuming HFCS and consuming regular table sugar ? HFCS gets a lot more negative press than sugar, but are they, nutritionally, distinct? and if so, why is HFCS so much worse?
i’d love to know if you do!
Thanks!

Hi Kath! I’ve been reading your wonderful blog for a couple weeks now. LOVE IT! Your recipes/meal ideas are helpful when I’m strapped for ideas – and they’ve all been delish!
I’m really mulling over your $126 grocery idea, but I’m not sure it’s do-able for my family. I’m 38 and I live in a suburb outside of Chicago, il.
