I was gearing up for a run this morning when I found Matt’s cell phone on his nightstand. We are those kind of folks who freak out a bit if we leave the house without our phones, so I decided to run it down to him.
But in the process, I realized I didn’t really want to run with a phone in my hand.
So I resorted to walking!! I packed a couple of magazines and decided instead of a 40-minute 4-miler, I’d walk an 80-minute 4-miler.
Once at the bakery though, I realized my help was needed as customers piled into the door. I worked the counters for a while and did my fairy tasks that lets the employees know I was there: straighten up under the counters, put things at right angles, tidy the office, sort out baskets, rearrange the retail side of the lobby. The bakery is kind of like living with 12 roommates – everyone picks up after themselves, but there are just things that get messy by the fact that a dozen people are working there. I love to go in a pull a Mary Poppins on the place!
Lunch ended up being a sampling of a few things – a slice of community sandwich (imagine a 2’ long braided cheddar garlic loaf filled with sandwich ingredients for employees to take slices of for lunch)
Plus a salad I picked up next door for some greens –
A hunks of this cinnamon chip monkey bread. Melanie always makes the most creative designs with leftover dough! Also for employee use (although I think we should sell things like this – it was fun to pull apart!)
By the time I left around 2, this was all that was left!!
Busy, busy day. I took the long way home to get the maximum stretch out of my walk. My legs are twitching in exhaustion now! Does that ever happen to yours after a long walk or hike? Never after a run! Must be the slow-twitch fibers!?
Off to do something fun!

Yum that sandwich looks great! And I love that song….
Shannon @ My Place In The Race says
Oh the bread looks amazing!!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
my legs always seem more exhausted from walking a certain distance than running that same distance! So weird.
Hillary says
That monkey bread looks fabulous—I should be the bakery’s professional taste tester! ; )
I mentioned the exact same thing re: twitching legs after a walk to my boyfriend last weekend. It NEVER happens when I run, but always (ALWAYS!) when I go for a long walk. Weird!
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
Yum! That sandwich looks so good, your employees are blessed to work for you. Delicious and fresh lunch and snacks, can I work there too?! 😉
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Delish lunch 😀
Molly @ RDexposed says
This post title reminds me of the How I Met Your Mother episode where they listen to it noooon-stop! hahaha
And your lunch looks SO delicious!
Ashley @ Coffee, Cake and Cardio says
I definitely get “the twitch” after certain workouts.
Simply Life says
I bet that’s exciting when you finish the days with barely any breads left!
Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious says
That was a pretty productive Saturday. I was at our bakery at 4:00am. Luckily it was not too cold this morning. I came home and cleaned and made batches of my new chocolate obsession. These little bites of heaven should last awhile. I wish I could walk to our bakery.
Have a great weekend!
kaila@ healthy helper blog! says
So nice of you guys to provide lunch for the workers! Definitely a perk I’m sure they appreciate!
Alex says
yes is a perk to working at Great Harvest. Matt and Kath treat us all very well.
VertGrenouille says
Yes it happens to me too after a long walk, especially when I go climb a mountain.
But now, all these pictures makes me hungry and I would need to walk a long way to get rid of all the good calories I would eat right there with that kind of menu! Slurp!
Carrie says
My mom makes monkey bread with cinnamon and such, it’s so delicious! And yours looks even better! Yum 🙂
Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee says
Oh yeah definitely! I can run more than 8 miles and be fine, but once I hiked 3 miles and man! It hurt afterwards! That community sandwich looks darn good. 🙂
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
I opted for a walk today too, but it was only because yesterday’s workout let me so sore, that that’s all I could really do! Plus, sometimes it’s just really nice to take the dogs for a long walk.
You SHOULD sell that monkey bread- it looks awesome!
And I got that twitch every so often when I finally lay down to go to bed. I guess some people call it “restless leg syndrome.” 🙂
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
The cinnamon chip monkey bread looks great and I love that song I will walk 500 hundred miles…now I have it in my head 🙂
Tabitha (From Single to Married) says
Hi Kath – so I’ve been kind of MIA from your blog for a while so I didn’t realize you guys had bought a bakery – and a Great Harvest no less! Can I just say that I lived in Utah for 10 years and Great Harvest was one of my staples and one of the few things that I still make a point of stopping by during my yearly visit? We have one somewhat close to where I now live in Northern Virginia, but it’s just not the same for some reason. On that note, I want to say that if you don’t already offer them, you really should look at making “mazurka bar.” They are a little piece of heaven in the form of a bar with fruit baked on top that I’ve only been able to find at the SLC Great Harvests (specifically the one on 9th and 9th). Just a recommendation. 🙂
KathEats says
You have been gone a long time! 🙂
I will look into the recipe for those bars – I love all of our bars!
Which location are you close to?
Tabitha (From Single to Married) says
Falls Church I believe – we’re in Arlington. Last time we made it there was in December, they have great cinnamon bread! 🙂
(yes, it has been a while since I visited, too long. I had a baby and got distracted from reading blogs for a while.)
good luck with your new venture!
KathEats says
I don’t think there’s one in Falls Church – Alexandria perhaps? Vienna? Burke? Herndon? 🙂
Tabitha (From Single to Married) says
Hmmm… all I know is that it was across the street from the Cadillac dealership. I believe it was Alexandria. I don’t get leave Arlington much so the surrounding cities all kind of blend together. 🙂
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Oh that bread looks tasty!!!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
i definitely get that feeling from walking… when i take the dogs on our 4 mile loop, i’m always sore the next day. think it’s from using muscles i don’t normally use for an extended amount of time.
that cinnamon chip monkey bread looks amaaaazing!
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
I love the idea of a communal sandwich…it looks amazing! Monkey bread too! Yummy!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Love that it was a busy day for you guys!
Sarah says
Are you guys doing any special Super Bowl bakery things? here in NYC many of the bakeries are doing 3-foot long sandwiches etc?
KathEats says
I really hope Matt decided to make the football cookies I proposed!
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
Food looks delicious! I think a leisurely walk is always great to get in!
Sondra says
My legs DO twitch after a long walk!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Oh man!! That monkey bread looks delicious!
And my legs are twitching but I think that’s from the leg workout that just kicked my butt…literally. 😉
[New Balance] Nicole says
Oh man, I would love to work in a bakery! I’m sure it’s stressful at times (especially owning it!) but it sure seems fun 🙂
Angel7 says
That sandwich looks yummy!
I think you should sell the creations that are made with leftover dough 🙂

Five hundred miles? That’s a lot! 🙂 But the bread and pastries look very tasty. Are those pistachios on the bread? I bet that would add a yummy crunch to it.
Khushboo says
I’m always surprised by how worked out my legs feel after a walk!
Cait's Plate says
Oh my gosh – that cinnamon chip monkey bread looks so incredible!! Does it taste similar to the GH cinnamon chip scone mix??
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Sounds like you have a great group working for you and you enjoy them. That’s pretty terrific!
Lorin says
I always wondered about that. Whenever I walk, I always feel a little bit of twitching in my muscles but that never happens when I run? Strange stuff.
Lindsay says
I am a notorious night-leg-twitcher! For me, its always after a dance class (so uh, everyday). My husband gets mad at me because I sleep right on through them, but end up kicking him!
~Christy says
you can come pull a MP on our store anytime! 😉 The braided cheddar garlic and monkey bread look like fun…might have to give ’em a go!
