Yay!!!! Thank you Craigslist , this was SO easy. The bike, in pretty good condition, was only $40. Great find! I’m looking forward to being as green as I can be in this sprawling city and riding to the gym when I can. Tonight we went on a lovely hour-long bikeride after dinner. The husband is just glowing with contentment – he’s wanted me to get a bike for a while. He said it was his "perfect summer night."
He did spent about an hour fixing it up for me – cleaning, tightening, greasing. Thanks hub!
Cruisin’ around –
We invited Karen over for dinner tonight for my mom’s homemade sherry tomato sauce over spaghetti squash , which I roasted during lunch.
She kindly brought some wine to sip
Seconds – (just a splash!)
While the bikeride was fun, I need a SHOWER!
Night guys 🙂

Nice new bike! I tried to go for a ride tonight, but a bit into my ride I noticed I had two flat tires. It was such a bummer.

You look so happy on your bike! Enjoy!

That spaghetti sauce looks and sounds amazing! Actually, the whole dish does. I love the combo of the sauce and squash.
Congrats on the new bike! 🙂

Awesome bike! Biking is addictive, so watch out…
In a related note, if you’re riding on real streets, I really recommend wearing sneakers! I just dislocated my shoulder after tripping on my flipflops getting off my bike – sounds ridiculous but especially when you’re first riding things like stopping and starting can be tough!
Ozlem says
Cool deal on the bike. Where did you get the squash now? Is it already in season?
Also, do you have the recipe for the sauce or is that also a secret?
Thanks!
Kath says
Emily ,
I did wear tennis shoes on our ride – that was just my test ride 🙂 And OUCH on the shoulder!
Ozlem ,
Squash came from Harris Teeter and unfortunately wasn’t the best because it’s not in season. I just hoped it would be good anyways. The recipe is linked in the post.

OH, and edited to this post to add my husband just came up behind me and said “You smell like a dog.”
NOW I am going to shower

Hey Kath, the bottle of wine Karen brought is the same kind we had at the Sedona Grille in Fayetteville, WV. We were on vacation, white water rafting, and decided to splurge. The food was amazing and I had one of the best days ever. I brought the bottle home because it was such a special night. When I saw it in the picture, I ran and got mine. It’s making me smile because of the great memories.

Oh, I love Mark West. That’s a good pinot noir. You should try macmurray central coast or sonoma pinot noir. the sonoma is a little more pricey like 25? good wine though.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to tell everyone about a great find!! I had to give up oatmeal in the morning because it started to give me stomach aches (I have IBS). So in search for an alternative I found Cream of Rice!!! It is made of brown rice and sooo creamy!! I thought some of you would want to try it out too. Happy eating!

I grew up eating cream of rice and farina, as well as other grains. My grandmother used to make this really fine cornmeal hot cereal as well. They are so creamy…, I prefer these sometimes because of their change in texture. Enjoy, I might have to have some tomorrow.

That Mark West pinot is the best! We had at my shower! 🙂

Congrats on the great deal you got on your new wheels. It is great that the 2 of you can now ride together, having fun as a couple is key to a happy relationship. Enjoy!!

smilesara…if you fractured a metatarsal, it is a bone in the foot below your toes; a fracture there can take 6-8 weeks to heal. did your doc put you in a splint/cast? i have had a stress fracture in a metatarsal on each foot before, and i was out of running/ high impact exercising for 8 weeks until the pain was completely gone before i could resume those activities
love the bike, kath. i sold mine when i moved out of my parents’ house and into a 2nd floor apartment, but now i’m in a townhouse with a basement in the city, and i would LOVE to get a bike…maybe i should check craigslist 🙂 i only live 2 miles from work so it would be worthwhile to bike, but i’d have to make it up a HUGE hill and with my packed lunch bag and all that could be tough along with the sweat factor…
haya says
caitlinbo – don’t regret your bike purchase. expensive bikes really are completely worth it, and it sounds like you got a really good deal. you can’t compare a cheap stock bike to something serious. it’ll last you a really long time and is much more “maintainable” and will likely be more enjoyable to ride.
that said, if you’re just casually riding around town , $40 is pretty awesome. (i bike commute ~15 miles every day and my costco bike i got a few years ago doesn’t hold a candle to the beautiful – and expensive – kona i have now) i’m glad to see you’re wearing a helmet, kath! way to be a role model. everyone person i see on the road without one makes me crazy. what are they thinking?

Hi Kath 🙂
I have a kind of random question about ice cream…do you find that keeping ice cream in your freezer makes it more tempting to indulge every night or that because it’s there you don’t feel deprived from desserts completely?? I’m trying to just eat dessert once and awhile and when it’s worth it, I indulge in the real thing but Ive found that because I don’t really keep sweets around the house I think about them even more..but I’m scared if I buy a carton of ice cream/fro yo etc., I will go overboard one night and have way too much! Any advice? Thanks!

Yay about the bike! I’ve wanted one for a while now…maybe I should check out craigslist! That’s where my boyfriend got his…
And you’re so cute with the helmet! 🙂

Craigslist is the best! Love the new bike and what a steal! We recently acquired a free organ (the piano kind… not a kidney or anything) and a dining room table in great condition for $50. Craigslist is a gold mine!
So glad you and the Husband can enjoy some nice bike rides together this summer!

I’m glad that you like your bike. If you find yourself riding it a lot, you should get a basket to put on the front. It’s really handy.

Amanda,
Good question. I do think ice cream is more tempting to have when it’s in my freezer, and I have dessert more often when I have some. But I have a loose rule where I try to have it every other night as a way to keep myself from over doing it with 7 nights in a row. So if I had it last night, tonight I should skip dessert. It seems to work well for me. I’m a big believer of out of sight, out of mind and “if it’s not there you can’t eat it” so if ice cream is a food you tend to lose control over I’d keep it out of the house and save it for trips to an ice cream shop. I’m not-so-much a believer in the whole “deprivation makes me eat more” thing for myself but you’ll have to make the call for your own personality.
Chelsea ,
IT MUST HAVE BEEN ME!!! I have the straightest hair in the world.
HangryPants,
Thanks for thinking of me, but I have a blog policy to not participate in chains + tags. Thanks though!

Congrats on the bike! I got a bike trailer this year so I could take the kiddies out and have enjoyed being green as well. I was doing so well until winter time came and even was dropping off and picking up my daughter from pre-school in it. Can’t wait until it is summer again!
The squash looks great, what a great idea! I am new to liking it but had a small obsession with it last fall. I am going to try this one for sure.

I have a question related to Amanda’s question. When I have certain types of ice cream in the house, I eat them. Now I have kids and right now I have some hershey bars in the fridge from a camping trip, popsicles, ice cream sandwhiches and some little snickers bars and I DON”T eat them. I don’t feel tempted and I do love them. But plain ice cream, I EAT. Geneen Roth is all about learning to not deprive yourself and she encourages keeping a lot of one thing (initally) in your house to convince yourself that you can always have it. I understand her point and the concept. Years ago, I never would have believed I could keep a hershey bar in the fridge for a month but the question is, when do you decide that an item is just something you shouldn’t have in the house at all? I get her concept but for somethings that are just delicious, it doesn’t seem to work.
Kath says
Allison ,
You know yourself and your limits. I’d say keep it away if you just can’t control it. Choose another dessert that you enjoy that you can eat normal portions and still not feel deprived. I’m not familiar with Geneen Roth, but I think some of those intuitive eating “rules” are kind of a stretch. Ultimately, your quest for a healthy body and weight maintenance should overpower your choice for uncontrollable desserts. If you’re not there yet, don’t buy it. I personally don’t think buying it and eating it whenever you want is going to rid yourself of the want of the food in the first place.

Amanda – I find that if I keep a tub of ice-cream I will sit down and eat the whole tub! (I’m like that – one little lick of a spoon = whole tub, one cube of chocolate = whole bar etc…). I find what helps is having ice cream lollies in my freezer, then I just open one and have that.
Kath – so cool you got a bike! I got a bike last year through the “Ride to Work” scheme the government runs in the UK (you don’t pay tax on it) and I always cycle to work (takes about 20mins) and its great – the best way to start/finish the day (except when I nearly get run over by a black cab) and a good way to do some exercise. I went for a long bike ride this weekend actually – I really should do more ‘fun’ cycling, rather than cycling in the gym!

Goodness, I need a new bike. Mine just isn’t the same after my little tumble a couple months ago. I’ve been riding my mom’s, but she won’t let me takes her’s off to college with me 🙁 . Maybe I need to just send it in for a tune up.
