Somebody else loves sardines!!!!
Healthiest cat in America!
Matt made mom and I sardine salad melts for lunch. They were INCREDIBLE!! (Mom only had a few bites because she is still warming up to sardines but she liked them)
The sardine salad contained:
- 2 tins sardines in hot sauce
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 1 celery, chopped
- Couple small pickles, chopped
- Cucumber, chopped
- 1 tbsp mustard
- 1 tbsp mayo
- Salt, pepper, Italian seasoning to taste
Serves ~3 people
On toasted Arnold bread with melted pepperjack cheese!! The cheese made it!!
Served with stone fruits
More pickles
And root beer!
Matt and I shared mom’s leftovers 🙂
The deadline to enter the Summit Stonyfield Smoothie Contest has been extended a few more days. I’m totally craving a smoothie – tomorrow’s breakfast perhaps!?
Adios!

Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Oh wowzer, that melt idea is brilliant!! Genius woman.
🙂
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I’ve never had sardines before but my dad loves the lil things. And I bet that cat’s thinking “I don’t even HAVE to hunt for a real fish..they just put it right in the bowl for me!” 😛
Anne @ the doctor takes a wife says
what a sweet little kitty cat 🙂
Evan Thomas says
Root beer is definitely my favorite type of soda. I can’t resist one now and again
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
that melt sounds like lunch perfection! i think i would be more ready to try salmon, but still…SO good!
Courtney (Delightful Devours) says
I have never had sardines either, but those sandwiches make me want some! Great looking lunch 🙂
Rachel (Two Healthy Plates) says
I have friends that can eat sardines straight from the can…but i just can’t bring myself to do it. maybe this would be a good starter recipe…they sort of creep me out!
Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks says
Haha, healthy cat, indeed! My dog is ridiculously picky, so I’m pretty sure he’d never come within miles of a canned sardine. I like them, though! My favorite way to eat them is on well-toasted rye bread or rye Wasa crackers, with lots of yellow mustard.
Bethany @ More Fruit Please says
I like the idea of a melt, but I don’t think I could do sardines. Good for the cat though!
Nicole - yuppie yogini says
Happiest cat ever!
Paula says
My husband loves sardines and I am just warming up to them. I will deffinately try Matt’s recipe, I think I might like it! cute kitty btw!
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
Those sardine melts look amazing…I’ve never had sardines though. Does you Mom not like the taste? Or is it the thought of eating sardines?
tanyasdaily says
I can’t get myself to even try a sardine! the looks alone are scary
but they are so healthy!
Meg says
Aww 🙂 adorable!
…and those melts look AMAZING! Wow! Share any with the bears? They need their omega fatty acids too, ya know 😉
Marie says
Haha such a cute kitty! I’m going to have to go grab some sardines for my cat, maybe she’ll give me some extra love? Nah, probably not… 🙂
Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf says
My coworker keeps canned tuna and canned salmon in the house just for her cats. 🙂 She herself won’t eat the stuff. In fact, her cats eat better than she does… yikes!
britta says
Ha, Cute!! I love using this baked cheesy bread method, but usually do a “faux bruschetta” kinda deal using tomatoes, Italian herbs, garlic, and olive oil for the mix then topping it with parm or mozzarella 😀
Rachael @ Mrs-adventure says
I’m learning to like them but it’s not love yet 😉
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
I’ve been THIS close to buying sardines (and I’m vegetarian) on several occasions now after reading your posts, but I can’t find any from companies that talk about their fishing practices. Wild-caught Pacific sardines are on Seafood Watch’s “Super Green List” for seafood that is both healthy for us (low in contaminants) and doesn’t harm the oceans, but I guess I’m still skeptical. And there’s the fact that I’ve been vegetarian for 5+ years, which is hard to give up. If the only meat or seafood I eat is sardines, would I be a sardinatarian? 😉
Kath says
If you became a Sardinatarian, I would consider my nutritional duties done for the year 🙂 They are SO good for you and I don’t think I’ve ever seen them not on one of the best seafood lists
Cassie @ Back to Her Roots says
I’ve never had sardines! Do you just eat them straight from the can? Is there anything I need to know about what type to buy? Educate me! 🙂
Kath says
No – not just from the can! (Although you…can!) I usually make a salad with peppers, carrots and other crunch along with mustard and mayo (or greek yogurt). Spices make them extra fun!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I heart Diet Root Beer! Its so good 🙂
Jimmy @ Run, Jimmy, Run says
I am thoroughly convinced that there is nothing on this planet better than the occasional diet root beer! Hits the spot every time!
Heather says
I love root beer! have you had the zevia kind?
stephanie@Avocado Nation says
I can see why your mom is a little freaked out but what you made really looks good. I guess I should give sardines a try!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I haven’t had a root beer in forever. It actually sounds really good about right now!
Ella @ The Princess and the P says
Oh my gosh that cat is so cute!! What beautiful coloring!
Open faced sandwiches are the BEST – for some reason they taste even BETTER without that extra slice of break 😉
Jessica @ How Sweet says
Sardine melts actually sound pretty good!
Vinegarlic says
I’m drinking a diet A & W as I read this. When I saw that photo I had a total Twilight Zone moment!
Caitlyn @ A Spoonful of Life says
I have never had sardines. But after seeing your sardine salad, I think I’ll just have to try them!
And your parents dark wood table looks gorgeous!! Love dark wood!
Callie says
I’ve never had sardines. Sounds like something I should try…
Mel says
I am hispanic and I have my sardines drizzled with Olive oil and a boiled sweet plantain. the sweetness of the plantain helps with the strong flavor of the sardines.
sweetersalt says
Looks yummy! I <3 fishy fish!
Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) says
Cute cat!
I love sardines! I usually just eat them with rice and green peas, but I bet it would taste delicious as a sandwich melt! Thanks for the idea! I like the sardines that come in tomato sauce – bet it would taste great with cheddar cheese or mozzarella cheese!
Mmmm, I love root beer! Had one a few months ago for the first time in forever (usually I just drink water) and it was soooo good!
Laura says
Awww…happiest kitty in the world!
Those sandwiches look tasty, but I can’t mix cheese and fish, something about that combo weirds me out. I love canned sardines mixed with pasta tossed with a little olive oil, red pepper flakes, shallot, garlic and parsley, then topped at the end with fresh breadcrumbs and dill! Soooo good!
Laura says
Mmmm, i’m not a huge fan of sardines however those melts look rather delicious! Sadly, my cats are not as healthy…..the eldest currently has a thing for glace cherries! odd cat!xx
Nancy @ The Wife of a Dairyman says
That cat is LOVIN’ life I’d say!
Katy @MonsterProof says
I should really try sardines. I don’t know why I have a hang-up. Lots of people like them…and I love salt… Maybe.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i just ate a sardine sandwich too. mine had mayo and dried fruit.
bash says
This is how weight loss should be done! Freshly prepared meals with fruits. Fruits contain the water and vitamins you need for a healthy and beautiful skin and the unprocessed meals are the best for a slim figure.
I can share tons of tips and articles with you on my site Healthy living and herbal supplements
Daniel says
Wow, now I’m craving sardines and cheese (and I really don’t like cheese to begin with!), haha.
A really good way to make a melt is to take large tops from buns (like dinner rolls or hamburger buns) and then dig out the soft underside part and use the rest of the top as a little “bowl” to put the fish in. Top it with cheese, stick it under the broiler and you have a delicious little melt-in-a-bun.
Paige (Running Around Normal) says
Aww – love the kitty cat pics! I bet it did love those sardines! I’ve never had them myself.
Pam says
Kath,
So when do you have to have the smoothie recipe in by?
Thank you!
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Your mom doesn’t eat very much! Half a serving of oatmeal, a few bites of a sandwich, LOL. My mom eats once a day 🙄 Parents, what can ya do? lol
That sardine sandwich looks exxxxxxxxxxxxcellent! I would have eaten all 3 of those!! hehehe
I <3 kitty kats, especially ones that get down with omega-3's.
Jenn
Kath says
She had more than just the half sandwich – Matt made her a cuc and cream cheese and fruit too. But she really doesn’t eat much in general!
Nicole, RD says
I am still warming up to sardines, too…but I love the health benefits!
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
Hmm, I’ve never tried sardines because they seem way too strong.
I’m glad to see you have the occassional tipple of Diet soda, makes me feel more normal!!
Ashley@TheHungryScholar says
I have never tried sardines before, but I also dislike seafood. Too bad, because those melts look good!
I love an occiaional soda once in awhile. 😉
Katherine says
Cute cat!
Wendy says
Cute kitty! My not-so-healthy (read: FAT) cat LOVES tuna and corn. He’s weird.
Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) says
That melt looks awesome! I love the creative ways you use sardines, thank you for sharing them!
Maria @ Kale and Cupcakes says
I’ve been eating sardines for most of my life – so healthy and so tasty! Love the recipe – think I’m gonna have to try it.
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
hehe try as I might I cant seem to get a taste for sardines…..
Rachael says
I’m also warming up to sardines. My partner gobbles them like they’re going out of style, and I’ve noticed that our cat is particularly attentive to him whenever he eats them – purring, rubbing and a little beard licking…maybe I’ll just start giving her her own dish, and earn a little feline affection for myself.
Have a great week!
Ella says
Gotta give a shout-out to Diet A&W rootbeer – the only diet rootbeer worth drinking, ha!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I think I would like saldines (I LOVE salt) but for some reason I never eat them. That saldine melt looks pretty good, though 😀
Ann says
I love sardines! My closet craving is sardines and mushroom pizza! No one ever wants to share with me.. but that’s okay by me 😀
Diana says
“Matt made mom and ME sardine salad melts for lunch.” Sorry but grammer is a huge pet peeve of mine….Lunch looks great though!
Jasmine @ Eat Move Write says
I don’t think I’ve ever had a sardine melt. Cool idea. I bet the salty pickles were a nice addition.
Liz says
Sardines = good.
Diet root beer soda, filled with high fructose corn syrup and toxic aspartame = terrible.
cm says
and the pixelated light reflecting from your computer screen is radioactive.
Sara says
Umm duh Liz….*diet* pop is free of sugar and calories and therefore does *not* contain HFCS. Shouldn’t someone finger wagging and lecturing actually know what they are talking about?
Wei-Wei says
I won’t agree with Liz, but after experiencing some really bad side effects from diet soda, I’d advise against drinking it again… but that’s just because I just recovered from a very bad binge/sugar craving. 🙁 Ah well, Kath’s much healthier than I am in mindset and physically, so I’m sure it won’t affect her 😉
Wei-Wei
jessica says
How often do you see Kath drink diet soda? 1-2x a year? Moderation is healthy.
Diana @ frontyardfoodie says
Mmmmm open face sandwiches. So tasty looking! Nothing like pickles to make it better!
angie says
diet sodas don’t have high fructose corn syrup…
Camille says
The melt looks delicious, but I am still waring of sardines :/
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
That is such a cute cat. Even tho it is a sardine sandwich it looks pretty amazing.
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
My sisters’ cats adore tuna, so I’m guessing that sardines would be high up on their list of favorites too. 😉
The melt looks delicious! 😀
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
My dad can’t get enough of sardines, but like your mum, they make me a lil bit nervous! Having said that, I couldn’t actually tell you what they taste like because it was so long ago that I tasted them. If I decide to though, I’m thinking this would be a good combo!! Thanks!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
I’m still not too sure about sardines. I wish I could get into them, but they still freak me out a bit. I think it’s just the packaging though.
Sara @ myfancytuna.blogspot.com says
That looks so good! I’m glad I have a can of hot sauce sardines waiting for me back at my apartment! 😀
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’m still really iffy about sardines. I love tuna melts though! 😀
Joanna @ landanimal.wordpress.com says
Hahah! I have never thought of giving my cat sardines. I wonder what he would do? I don’t ever eat seafood cause I don’t like it so I have never seen him around fish. Maybe I will by him some for a treat
Noelle says
Listen, no part of ‘Biscoff Cheesecake Bars’ are KERF-ish. But, I felt you must know about this wonderment I saw on Bakerella’s site today: http://www.bakerella.com/
In a completely unrelated story, the chocolate peanut butter oats I had for breakfast this morning were amazing! Sometimes, you need a little extra indulgence to get you out the door on a Monday.
1/3c Organic Valley Lowfat Milk (I do lactose free, bugger), water, and oats
Heavy sprinkle of cinnamon
1 giant tablespoon chia seeds
(Microwave for 90 seconds because you’re late for work and are taking this in the car.)
Add:
1 tsp vanilla
Swirl 1 tablespoon of peanut butter (am currently eating my way through PB & Company Cinnamon Raisin Swirl)
Drizzle with a little Trader Joe’s ‘Midnight Moo’.
Pure heaven!

Kath says
YUM!
KatieTX says
Diet root beer is delicious!! My mom has A&W cream soda at her house sometimes and that too is delicious! I love tuna and most fish, maybe I will try sardines! If I can’t handle them, I bet my cat would love them. I let her lick my tuna cans after I give them an initial rinse. She will lick them for so long to get every last drop of tuna out. So cute!
angierunner says
Your kitty ( or your mom’s ?) is so cute! I don’t like sardines, but I would make tuna melts with my kitty, and let her have the tuna water 🙂
[email protected] says
omg kitty reminds me of my neighbors cat ‘Hailey’ that unfortunately passed away not too long ago. she was my best friend <3 i loved that cat to bits 🙂
Josie- Skinny Way Of Life says
I love sardines! When I was little I use to love sardine sandwiches, I stopped eating them because it was gross to all the other kids and they would make fun of me. How sad is that!? one thing I love about being an adult is I can eat whatever I want even the “gross healthy stuff” and say screw you it’s delicous and good for me! hahahaha
Janelle says
I’ve tried, and I just can’t do sardines. I want to like them, but….eww….tuna melts are the best I can do.
Wendy says
Oh I really love that kitty! So cute!!
Diet A&W is the bomb diggity.
Hannah says
Oh, cravings! A few weeks ago I was eating a can of sardines every day and loving it, but since then I haven’t been able to justify it because canned tuna and salmon have been the ones on sale at my local shop, and so budgetting wins out 🙁 I think I might have to splurge on some sardines soon, though. Teehee. Splurging on sardines…
Jonny Hamachi says
Looks Great!!!
