Morning was spent making this huge chart of all of the most important enzymes + hormones for carbohydrate metabolism and reviewing them with Victoria at the coffee shop –
I highly recommend charts as a way to compartmentalize lots of confusing scientific information! Both the organization and the writing helps ingrain the concepts in your head.
By the way, this pen ROCKS MY WORLD!! It’s a Cornpen by Eco Pens and I got it at BlogHer off of the bing able table. I got it because it was cute and small, but the pen part is amazing to write with. I have 3 and one just ran out of ink. Going to find more online somewhere even if that means writing the company! Looks like you can get them with your logo on them. KERF pens perhaps!?
While studying I had a French press cup of Butterscotch Toffee Coffee at Dilworth Coffee! My do I love the aroma of that flavor. [Yay iphone photo!]
When I got home from studying at 12:30 I wasn’t really that hungry yet. I think the 10AM coffee + high protein overnight oats were a lot to digest. So I decided to just go straight to the gym so I could enjoy the rest of my afternoon without it hanging over me. So I went, sped there as fast as I could, did 30 minutes on the ET and then sped home. I was pedaling so fast!!
By the time I got home it was almost 2PM and I was certainly hungry by then!! I kept chanting in my head "hungry, hungry, hot dog." I don’t know why I chant when I’m famished?!
Luckily I had lunch all planned out and just heated it up and ate!
And Applegate Farms organic hot dog on one of Matt’s buns that I toasted in the oven while I showered + ketchup + mustard.
A few leftover okra fries from the other night’s dinner
A row of peaches
And the last of the Food Should Taste Good jalapeno chips in the middle
It was an awesome lunch and left me more than replenished.
Metabolism is calling!
Nicole (dishin') says
That lunch looks perfect. I need to try out those hot dogs. I love the jalapeno chips – aren’t they the best? Actually, they tie with the sweet potato ones!
rhodeygirl says
The only time I ever chant is when I am in a car and a rest stop is far away… the empty water bottle giving me the evil eye from the floor of the car.
In those cases, I chant “I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it. I.can.do.it.” >…and repeat.

I have been meaning to buy new pens for a while but I can never find one that is just right — I am super picky too. I am going to try to find EcoPens this week.
Great lunch too!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
I’m totally impressed by that chart! It might be fun to play around with colors next time too… supposedly our brain sends certain signals when we see certain colors and red is one that helps evoke our memory. Have a wonderful afternoon!
Amanda @ Cakes and Ale says
I am a recent convert to the wonderfulness that is okra. I love it extra crispy, squirted with lemon juice and garlic salt!

Those are some awesome pictures…with the new camera I presume? A lot of those words on your charts look familiar, I’m currently studying Exercise Science and we just finished a chapter about metabolism 😉

sSever thought I would say this (especially when I was pulling all nighters and studying my face off…) but I miss school so much! This is new for me and I think that it comes solely from reading your blog lately. I want to study and make charts and have favourite pens!! You are an awesome student girl- you deserve the advanced internship!
Back to work I go!! 🙂

Yikes! The first bit of the comment was meant to read “Sigh- Kath, I never thought…”

I just bought the sweet potato variety and had it with some goat cheese and fruit today for lunch. Sooo good. They make a great cracker and have a wonderful flavor.

I agree that writing things down for studying helps! Especially with complicated concepts. I am studying for my ACE personal training certification right now and there is a lot of information and formulas to process. I have to write it, read it, write it again and hope it sticks!
Good luck with studying!

Having nice pens really makes a difference. I really like the new Sharpie pens, they don’t smear or bleed through and and just really easy to write with.

Have you ever tried the Snickerdoodle coffee from Dilworth? It is my all-time favorite flavor. It’s kind of pricey, so I get a small package as a once-in-a-while treat. My package is almost gone 🙁

Oh a woman after my own heart when it comes to the pen topic. I love school supplies in general, but I definitely play favorites!

i am just catching up on a few missed days of blog lurking (ironically, it is because i have a test tomorrow) and i realized we must be taking the same course right now… advanced nutrition? we even have the same book (i saw it in a post earlier)
so, just a study tip… make a concept map of all the pathways (glycolysis, TCA cycle/Krebs, gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis, and glycogenesis) make sure they are all connected and have enzymes listed… really helps to tie it all together in your mind! adding the positive and negative modulators is a nice touch to squeeze it all in one as well — good luck on your exam!
Kath says
Emily,
Canon Rebel XSI. Just bought it!
Heather,
That’s the plan!!

Need help with okra fries! Yours looked amazing from lunch – so I made some tonight – and they were TERRIBLE!
I sprayed the okra with a little PAM and S+P and baked them in the oven for about 10 minutes at 350….and they were AWFUL! The skin was so tough I couldn’t bite it and the insides were not soft! I thought I cooked them long enough because the outsides seemed to be getting crispy….but they were gross 🙁
Would appreciate some tips! Thank you!
Kath says
ALD,
You didn’t cook them nearly long enough. I have done 400* for 15 minutes and 375* for 20. You want to cook them until they are soft to the touch!
Kath
ALD says
Ok got it! I’ll have to have patience with the okra 🙂 Thank you!
Katie says
I love the peach line-up!
It’s so funny you talked about the science chart helping you study – I am a teacher, and JUST TODAY we were talking about different learning styles, and people who like/use charts are totally kinesthetic learners. Does that fit you? I would love to know if the “theory” we are studying is true in your case… 🙂
Kath says
Katie,
I’ve always thought of myself as a visual learner. I think the chart helps me see the organization of it all. But perhaps I am both! I am most definitely NOT auditory!

I just wanted you to know that I found this post and your website because I have that EXACT pen. It is smooth-writing, the perfect size (small enough to fit in my pocket), and about to run out of ink. Tragedy! Yours was the first site that came up when I googled “bing cornpen refill” (also I felt like I was betraying the pen somehow by not using bing). Hope you find/found the refills for this little guy, and if you do, let me know! (:
Allison
P.S. The row of peaches alongside that hot dog makes me terribly happy somehow.
