Good morning!! The bears love their new brother – they made a special hospital trip with Grammie Buzz for the occasion!
I miss you all so much. I miss regular blogging and it feels really weird to go to bed without posting! I have SO MUCH I want to share and no time to sit down and write! Maze is keeping us very busy, but I’m sure we’ll get in a more regular pattern soon : ) My parents are here and are a tremendous help with all the household things so Matt and I can focus on taking care of the baby and resting.
I want to go back in time for a bit and share some of the meals I had while in the hospital! I was famished after labor and delivery and pretty much not eating and throwing everything up. The hospital food tasted SO GOOD though and although we had other snacks (like GH bread) to munch on, I was very excited when my trays arrived : ) I shared 25% or so with Matt and he also had some salads and meals from the cafeteria that were pretty tasty.
Day 1 breakfast and lunch: eggs, toast, milk, banana and then the cod and rice meal.
Dinner that night was meatloaf and mashed potatoes, which I wolfed down so fast I don’t remember eating them! For some reason 2% milk tastes like liquid gold to me.
Breakfast the next morning I got to order – I chose waffles and oatmeal and yogurt (hungry when I ordered!) I probably only ate about 60% of this tray and shared the rest with Matt, but it was fun to taste everything.
He dolled up my waffles and oatmeal for me : ) (Peanut butter from home)
Day 2 lunch was a pork chop, but I opted for the alternative hummus sandwich and tomato soup instead. I wanted something a little lighter than a dinner entrée for lunch.
My dinner came at 5pm, and although we had plans for a pizza party after, I ate some of it as a snack.
Chicken and rice soup, a biscuit, salad and fruit.
My parents brought in some Christian’s pizza and Karen arrived home from NYC in time for our party!
We said cheers with a little pumpkin beer!!! [Can you tell I burst all the blood vessels in my eyes!?]
Maze said “y’all are being too loud! I’m trying to sleep!”
Great Harvest cookies for dessert : )
Day 3’s breakfast was by far the best – a giant fresh-made pancake which I topped with some butter and syrup! Plus oatmeal (that Matt had) and hot tea, milk and a banana.
Baby breakfast was some delicious milk ; )
After breakfast, it was time to start thinking about going home!
We dressed him in his finest and brought in the carseat. His hat is from Baby GAP that we picked out as his first clothing item after we found out he was a boy. And the onesie was handmade by KERF reader Rachel!!
And on the most beautiful fall day you could ever imagine, we went home a family of 3!
To be continued…
Gauri says

You are such a beautifull, glowing mother! Hope you have a beautiful day as a new mommy! 😀
Katie D. says
I remember bursting all of the blood vessels in my eyes! Very scary looking, but goes away quickly. You look fabulous, Kath! And, that bear hat is practicle edible, it’s so cute on him! 🙂
Robin says
I popped the blood vessels in my eyes with my first baby, too! No one ever warned me it might happen, so when I looked at myself in the mirror, I was shocked! Somehow the second time around, I convinced myself to use muscles others than those in my eyes, and it worked!
Stephanie says
Congratulations, Kath & Matt! I’ve been following along religiously since you announced you were pregnant. I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I feel like it all went by so quickly! Thank you for sharing so much on Kerf & Berf! It makes me so excited to one day experience it for myself 🙂 And of course I’m excited to see more posts including baby Maze now!
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Soooo wonderful! And, you look fantastic, Kath! …..I also broke tons of blood vessels in my eyes and ALL OVER on my face and neck. I didn’t look in the mirror till day 2 and was shocked to see my puffy & bruised face! Oh the horror! (even after over 2 weeks, a few in my eyes have yet to heal/look better)
briana says
You are STUNNING in that last pic!!!
Judy says
Awe, you are so sweet to even get the chance to write this much today. I find myself checking twitter during the day to see how you all are doing. This time goes by so fast, enjoy it while it’s here.

Susan says
You’re so in love with him, it’s clear to see from those photos! 🙂
Has anything about new motherhood surprised or challenged you yet? We are SO ready for babies but I’m so nervous about not knowing what to do and feeling lost without our families near!!
P.s. what is the bear story? I’m quite a new reader!
KathEats says
I’m not quite sure. I knew breastfeeding was going to hurt, but not as bad as it does at times! I’m surprised how well I’m doing with such little sleep! I’ve never slept this little in my life, yet I’ve definitely felt more tired than this before.
Here’s the bear page! https://www.katheats.com/kerf-favorites/the-three-bears
Erin says
I remember those days. A month or so before my son was due I got an email from my mom saying she wanted to make sure I knew how much breastfeeding would hurt. Hang in there…it will go away in a few more days. 🙂 I knew the actual feeding part would hurt but I was SO surprised at the cramping that went along with it!
Congrats to you and Matt! What a beautiful boy!!
Susan says
You’re beaming in that photo feeding Mazen, sounds like you’re doing a great job. A few days after my sister’s baby was born she had a lot of pain due to her milk coming in. Ouch – hope the pain goes for you soon.
Thanks for the link. Haha, I also hate stuffed animals…probably because I shared my room with my sister and she had stuffed disney toys all over our beds!
bmrobertson63 says
I am just loving reading your recaps. It takes me back to very sweet memories when my little man was born 2 years ago! Thanks so much for sharing. He’s adorable and you look beautiful!
Sarah Anne says
Lovely family!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Oh Kath, he is just so precious (although I think you probably already know that). I wish the food was better when I had my kids. Seriously, you had some great eats! Tony actually had to go out to get me food it was so bad. Looks like everyone is getting some great family time in. Enjoy it! You won’t get these times back.
Rachel says
That hat is adorable! Looks like the hospital food was pretty good.. but I’m sure you’re happy to be home and able to make your own foods 🙂
Brie @ Impatient Baker says
Literally one of the stinking cutest babies I’ve ever seen. PS, you’re glowing, as if you didn’t know already. 😉
Morgan @ moments of mmm says
Gosh, Kath! You look incredible laying there with Maze. You are literally glowing…from happiness and love I suppose. 🙂 I can’t wait to hear the entire story of Maze’s first hours. Take advantage of the help while you have it!

oh my goodness – thank you for posting! just made my day – you look amazingly beautiful and happy, especially in that last photo. congratulations!!!!!
Jennifer says
I got pregnant with both of my daughters in the month August (different years obviously) and found out I was pregnant in September. Your posts are not helping my desire for #3. Many, many congratulations again. Everyone says that you can’t imagine what it feels like to love that little person and I always thought it was so lame, even when I was pregnant, but it’s so true. I hope you are immensely enjoying getting to know your little one. Motherhood is just so wonderful even if it’s so, so difficult at times. MAZEl Tov! (I know you’re not Jewish, but it seems so appropriate given your little one’s name.)
Ariel says
You look gorgeous and glowing, and I wish I could smell his little head! He is SO cute.
Laura says
Love the picture of you laying on your side and feeding! How did the blood vessels burst? Is that from pushing hard? Does it hurt/feel weird at all?
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
That’s so exciting!!!! He is really adorable, I love the photo with the bears. And you burst the blood vessels in your eyes!? I didn’t even know that happens!
Sarah says
I’m so glad you had a positive hospital experience! We did infant classes at our hospital and took tours of the delivery and maternal floors – which made me so much more comfortable when we went in to deliver. It’s definitely nice to be looked after during your recovery!
My favorite part at our hospital was that when you transition floors, from delivery to maternal, they play Brahms’ lullaby over the speakers! We heard it a few times when we had visited the hospital before – it plays throughout the entire hospital. I remember holding our guy, being wheeled upstairs and hearing it. I looked at him and told him – this is your song!
Ali @ Peaches and Football says
It is OK to be taking a tiny break from your posting. These are precious first moments as a family of three and you need to fully savor them – years from now you won’t regret not posting multiple times a day but you might regret not spending as much time soaking up the first moments as you can.
Give him a big, huge sniff for me. I know that sounds weird but babies just smell unbelievably wonderful. Nothing smells like them and I love it. 🙂
Jennifer says
Those are great pictures and you look SO happy! 🙂 The grandparents look very proud, too. I meant to comment on their southern accents in the video. I love it. 🙂
As many have mentioned, don’t feel bad that you can’t post more. Enjoy Maze! This time goes by quickly.
Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot says
Your baby is beautiful. That last picture is seriously the cutest thing ever. Plus, red looks so great on you!

I must say, this post put a big smile on my face (especially Maze in his cute hat and onesie!) after a killer biochemistry test this morning!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
So beautiful Kath!!! Beautiful son and you look so happy!
Beyonce says
That photo of you laying in bed with Mazen, with the owl blanket, is exquisite.
You have got a beautiful family going here, and I am happy for you!
As for blogging, just do what feels right. You don’t owe anybody anything, and any opinions that others may have about your schedule can and should be met with an eyeroll 😉
RunEatRepeat says
Love that baby hat! I kinda want one for myself…
Jessica says
So happy for you! Enjoy your sweet little Maze. He is perfect.
Amanda Cowan says
So happy for you and your new little family! Reading all about your story has inspired me to go back and look at photos from my birth experiences (all 3!) and I definitely got a little weepy. Plus it was fun to show my 2 year old all the pictures from her older sisters’ babyhoods. Enjoy! And I hope you get some good rest!
Laura @ She Eats Well says
Can’t get over his hat it is so stinking cute! Sounds like you had a really positive experience at that hospital and overall. Can’t wait to read more.
Khushboo says
Wow what a spread! I was always under the impression that all hospital food was terrible…CLEARLY NOT 😀
kristin says
Looking RADIANT, Kath! And your lil cub is SO adorable in that hat! It’s good to know that you can eat good healthy stuff at the hospital; I brought my brother and sister-in-law some yummy sandwiches and salads from a local italian deli when they had their little girl. I think they were afraid of the hospital food! ha 🙂
eliza says
wow he is a beautiful baby!! congrats again 🙂
Shannon says
SO WONDERFUL!!! Such a beautiful family of 3!!!! 🙂
Jennifer says
Before this post, I was thinking to myself “Wow she didn’t pop any blood vessels in her eyes, that’s amazing!”. Especially after the vomiting and just the force of pushing that hard! You couldn’t even tell in your earlier pictures until you pointed it out in this one! I’m kinda glad to know it happens, b/c I’ll be due with my first in February and it will be nice to know that it didn’t just happen to me!
Tara says
Congrats! He is adorable and you look wonderful! Also, that hospital food looks impressive!
I’m pregnant with our second child and reading your posts are reminding me of those awesome first days with our son (well, they’ve all been pretty awesome!) and getting me very excited for our new addition! It’s such a special time…enjoy every minute!
Sarah says
You look so beautiful and happy!!
My mom told me she tried to push me out for so long (ultimately leading to a c-section) that when she looked at herself in the mirror for the first time after having me she was so scared to find that her whole face was covered in broken blood vessels from pushing so hard!
Nicole says
This post brought tears to my eyes! My husband and I just found out we are expecting, your posts make me so excited for whats to come!
Cappi says
Baby is beautiful! As weird as it is for YOU to not be blogging, it was very strange to NOT have posts from you..Glad to have you back :-)…even if just one a day!

I’m so happy for you Kath! And it’s so nice to see that you’re pretty relaxed so far~or so it seems 🙂 I’m melting over here! Maze’s outfits are the most adorable things ever! I’m a sucker for baby clothing.
Jen B says
Aw, I’m so happy for you both – you look so content. Baby is darling, of course!
I laughed at the 2% milk thing – it’s so interesting to see what our bodies want under various conditions. I love coconut manna when hiking, and it’s not something I’d normally be so enthused about.
Congratulations on your lovely new baby!
lindsay says
Goodness – this and all your post-baby posts have been awesome! Beautiful pictures. You look amazing, Kath!
Cait says
Oh Kath, I just adore your blog! Thanks for still filling us in, during this busy and momentous time in your life!
donna says
Kath, I am surprised that you are blogging at all! Of course, we’d all love to see photos of the baby, but this is such a special transition time—time for bonding, settling into a routine, and resting, that no one expects you to blog. I’m surprised you are not taking a MATERNITY break for at least a couple of weeks.
Really, all of us (especially those of us who are mothers) would totally understand if we didn’t hear from you all all right now.Cherish this time with your son, and don’t feel obligated to do any work right now. You have plenty of time for that later.
Katie says
I have been reading your blogs since ’08. I was so emotional when I read the blog when you announced your pregnant and now I am tearing up seeing that photo of you and Maze – Congratulations! I am so happy for you and your beautiful family!

Those first few days (who am I kidding, more like weeks) are such a whirlwind. You’ll be so glad you have your blog to look back on. Enjoy every minute and don’t worry about the blog. Everyone will still be here when you are on a regular schedule.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says

He is such a cutie!!! And you really do look fab, glowing! The food is incredible! Even in the most expensive paid for hospitals here the food is rubbish, and when I say rubbish I really mean the pits…!

Isn’t breastfeeding hunger so crazy? I remember eating a big meal then being hungry 2 hours later! It’s so fun 🙂 But I wouldn’t hold your breath for more sleep or a schedule just yet…luckily you’ll just get accustomed to being tired!
BTW do you get OneKingsLane? Saw this today and thought of your nursery: https://www.onekingslane.com/product/15932/717844

What a perfect baby boy! I absolutely love the picture of you lying down on the bed with him. You are all so beautiful! 🙂 The hospital food actually doesn’t look half bad! I’m used to hearing how horrible hospital food is, but maybe since that hospital is newer, they are more with the times 😉 Have a wonderful rest of your day!
Lauren @Sizzle Eats says
It’s amazing that you can make even the blandest of foods look fantastic! Congrats!
Lauren says
It must feel so funny to be on the other side of hospital FS! Did it bring you back to your internship days to be sending your order down to dietary?
KathEats says
yeah, it was funny to break down the meals by macronutrient 🙂

Motherhood really suits you, the photo of you nursing is just gorgeous… i loved nursing my son, it’s such an amazing experience. I am just reliving every happy moment with you as it was only last October i had Rowan. (I just wish i blogged about it as it is becoming more and more hazy).
I hope you are feeling ok? sometimes you can feel a bit blue when the milk comes in, i just felt teary around 5:30pm for about 3 days but it soon passed and was replaced with the most euphoric feeling (which still continues to this day)!! I too busted some blood vessels in my eye during deliver and didn’t notice for a day or two.
Where did you get those cute swaddle blankets? I love them!
Sarah says
Whoooa so did you vomit before delivery? During? Or after? This is a huge fear of mine just curious about your whole process… Also didnt know you could burst your blood vessels in your eyes but I guess that makes sense. But the vomiting, oh vey, I do not like that!

Cheers,

So sweet! Looks like you’re having a wonderful time together. So lucky to have family close by for help.
My blood vessels worn broken in my eyes, too, and my face was so swollen I looked like a different person – that was from my 6 hours of pushing. Yep. Totally worth it!

Our little man was born at 10:00 p.m. andwedid early discharge at noon the next day. I felt so tired and was craving a bed where the three of us could snuggle together. However, seeing your stay completely changes my outlook on postpartum time at the hospital. I love how light and celebratory you guys kept everything!

I have to admit, I’ve been reading the past few months’ worth of posts thinking, holy moly that girl probably cannot WAIT to have a beer! And hooray, it’s pumpkin! 🙂

I love the first picture of him with the bears and the one of you with him outside the hospital getting ready to go home. Oh, and pretty much every picture that he’s wearing that bear hat. Too precious.

Your video is really lovely to watch- I love the way Mazen responds to Matt hushing his cries! Do you think having a speech-to-text software package might help you write (if you want to!) while your hands are occupied with your little one? I hope you are recovering well and everyone is looking after Mom as well as Mazen!
