My my this breakfast was good – but it was too hot! I don’t understand why some days my oatmeal is piping and other days it’s the perfect temp. Actually, I bet it has to do with how long I cook it (duh…) because I stirred in cottage cheese today and cooked it longer than normal to let that heat up. I bet that’s totally it! Lesson: remove oats from stove before they are rapidly bubbling!
Despite being hot, this bowl was HOT STUFF!
-
The Mix
- 1/3 cup Great Harvest Cinnamon Raisin oat mix
- 1/3 cup water
- 1/3 cup milk (MUCH better today!)
- 1/2 banana
- 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/3 cup Organic Valley Cottage Cheese, stirred in at end
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla
- Pinch salt
- Nuttzo (the real deal – haven’t had it in oats in ages and it was suppppper crunchy!)

Galaxy Granola Maple Pecan Quinoa granola!!! The NEWest in the flavor line. Make with oats, spelt, barley, maple, pecans, quinoa, oat bran, white grape juice concentrate, apples, crisp rice, coconut flakes, cinnamon – delish! I love how crunchy these are. Can you tell I’m into crunch!? Vanilla Almond is still my favorite flavor, but this one was close behind 🙂

My coffee hasn’t been frothing lately I wonder if the weather is to blame. A reader posted a few weeks ago that the froth amount has to do with the barometric pressure (or something!) and now that it’s all humid in the south, the air has changed. I wonder if this is why some of you can never get any froth? High altitude, different climates?
Have a flippin’ Friday! I’ve got a busy one: work –> workout (uptown) –> graduation dinner
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Oof, that Galaxy granola has such good stats – 5g of protein from only a 1/4 cup, that seems pretty good 🙂
Have a great day!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I actually have to let my oats sit for a minute. I like to pour a little bit of almond milk on top and let it sit..then enjoy. It helps it cool off and set up just a bit. Your mix looks like a perfect way to start Friday! Have a great day, Kath!
Veggielady4life says
I hate it when my oats are so hot they burn my mouth, too!! I used to actually put them in the fridge for a little bit after I made them…. to speed up the cooling down process… but then I realized that was probably horrible for my fridge… so now I just try to let them sit for five or ten minutes while I do something else…
Anywhoo… yours look especially tasty today… 🙂
Lauren @ eater not a runner says
I just got that new flavor in the mail….I’ll have to try it out!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I always let my oats sit for about 5 minutes before I dig in – I clean up the kitchen or go finish getting ready!
Sarah Jayne says
Ohhh that granola sounds AWESOME!!!
Frothing French press is a scientific mystery- I’ve been making it since November with no foam at all and just last week my coffee has been foaming like crazy!! What the?! Either way, sure tastes delicious 🙂
Simply Life says
That granola sounds great!
Amelia says
Oats look delish! I have been heating my milk in the microwave until warm then giving a quick whisk in my cup before adding in my french press coffee. I have no problem getting that yummy froth that one would get from a coffee shop and I’m in Charleston. We have a LOT of humidity!
Courtney (Pancakes & Postcards) says
I always get to the middle of my oatmeal on the bottom (the part that stays trapped by all the other oatmeal until I finally dig down in there) and it always sears my tounge. Even if the top is already congealed or cold or nasty. Kind of fun, it that painful way…
Brittany @ A Healthy Slice of Life says
I have a silly question… the oats you made this morning, you cooked this morning, right? I keep hearing about “over night oats”. Do you have to cook those? Or just let them sit overnight? Can someone give me the recipe and fill me in! I’d love to try ’em 🙂
Kath says
These are cooked!!
My overnight oats recipe is on the Tribute TO Oatmeal page
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I actually like my food piping hot… weird… I know…
Have a great Friday!
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
I love a good crema on an espresso. It’s difficult to replicate with a standard brew.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I have the opposite problem – by the time I’m done adding the toppings to my oats and taking pictures, they’re always too cold! 😛
I love all of your bowls and dishes! Where are they from?
Kath says
All over! Crate + Barrel, Pier 1, OpenSky
This one was hand-made by a neighbor
Wei-Wei says
Does cottage cheese taste like anything when stirred into oatmeal? I’ve never tried it before… I have to buy some more cottage cheese, stat! 😀
Happy Friday! 🙂

Another beautiful bowl! How interesting about the froth and the barometric pressure… I never would have imagined that the weather would have any effect on your coffee!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Mmmmm…I love maple-flavored anything! Yum! Have a great Friday!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Maple Pecan Quinoa granola – sounds delicious!!
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
No matter how long I cook anything, it always ends up kind of cold when I eat it- I’m constantly re-microwaving dinners haha
Ilana says
I’ve been a fan of your blog for well over a year and somehow the pictures of oats still draw me in. Isn’t that crazy? I guess they really are magic.
Charlotte says
I have a weird question. Is it possible to eat too much yogurt? There are some days where I eat a kilogram of plain, nonfat yogurt (i dont know how much that is in the English system, but calorie-wise that’s 500 calories of yogurt in a day).
the rest of my day is filled with fruits, vegetables, eggs and nuts, and some grains, so it’s not like i’m replacing yogurt for meals. but i do consume a lot and am worried especially about yogurt’s natural sugar content in such a high dose.
Charlotte says
kilo ha
Kath says
500 calories of yogurt is pretty high. If you’re eating 2,000 calories/day, that’s 25% from yogurt alone. While it’s a very healthy food, I’d lower it just a bit. Not a big deal for a day or so, but probably not ideal for long term eating habits.
kalli@fitandfortysomething says
looks like a great way to start your busy day 🙂
Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
I need granola to top off my oatmeal! The maple pecan quinoa sounds awesome! I love maple and pecan together, sounds so good!
Heather (www.runningwithsass.com) says
happy Friday! Your meal sounds delicious.
Camille says
The cottage cheese in oats sounds soo good and I keep meaning to try it!
Laura says
Hmmm, maybe cottage cheese makes oats have a higher specific heat capacity so they retain the heat from cooking longer?! Have a lovely Friday!
Mary @ It's Bliss says
Wow, I was in the same boat this morning- even had cottage cheese oats! Unfortunately there was no time to wait to let them cool before having to eat them so suffering through the heat was part of it. Oh well, better luck next time! 🙂
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
Hmm interesting theory about the barametric pressure! Not sure why I don’t get any froth.
Have a great Friday, Kath!
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
That Galaxy granola sounds fantastic.
Stacy says
Crunch always takes oats up a notch. Qunioa in granola is interesting, but yowsas its not cheap! Do they sell Galaxy in stores so you can try just one? Or are they only online?
Kath says
I think they do have it in stores – I haven’t seen it yet. I’m hoping to get the OpenSky package down to one or two instead of 6.
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
The oats I am trying to eat right now are piping hot! But I had to put them in the microwave for longer cause I put too much coconut milk in them. whoops!
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
Love the idea of granola with quinoa mixed in…so unique! I just bought my first taste of Galaxy granola the other week and am really liking it! Good granola is such a nice breakfast find :).
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
That granola sounds great! The bowl you put the oatmeal in makes a difference in the temp, too. Some materials hold temperatures better than others.
Jenn
Monica vs. The World says
Looks like a great bowl of oatmeal! 🙂
Diana @ frontyardfoodie says
Whenever I put bananas in my oatmeal as I cook it I always burn my tongue! Those things are molten!
I keep hearing about Galaxy Granola. Gotta get me some!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
woohoo for the graduation dinner! sounds like a wonderful friday to me 🙂
Heather says
I usually stir my oatmeal for 30 seconds or so before I add my toppings so it becomes “just right.”
I would have never thought the barometric pressure could influence the frothiness of coffee – very interesting.
Enjoy your Friday and the graduation dinner!
Erin says
I opted for cold cereal, yogurt and berries this morning to combat the HOT weather but a couple hours later, I am *starving*. There’s nothin’ like oats!
Steph- Exercise Physiologist & Artist! says
I love to see your food but I am the most envious of your breakfast and coffee!
I just wrote that on Caitlin’s blog too. I aspire to one day have as beautiful breakfasts as the two of you!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I have a temperature issue sometimes too. I just have to let them sit longer.
Erin says
Kath, oatmeal looks good, but I have to know something about your silver spoon – is that Repousse (the silver pattern)? I nerd-out about things like that. 🙂
Kath says
I have no idea! It was my grandmother’s. Perhaps it is!?
Eliza says
yours oats look and sound so delicious, nutzo i am still dying to try that stuff!… and ah galaxy granola is so good, i have had the maple pecan quinoa flavor before, i didnt know it was new? they sell there “meteor bites” which are galaxy granola’s line of individual little packets of granola cluster’s and that flavor as well as the Mayan chocolate is amazing!
Danielle (Runs on Green) says
Whoa, that’s crazy about the froth/altitude temp! Mine hasn’t been frothing a lot either
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Hm…that’s really interesting about the froth and climate change. I never would have guessed that! Lately my coffee has been frothy, but I think that’s because I’ve been using soymilk and shake it up really good before adding my coffee to it (i.e., major froth!)
Can’t wait to try those granola flavahs!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i love my oats super duper hot (that’s why i microwave them for an extra 30 seconds sometime) but now that the weather is heating up not so much!
Hayley says
Interesting about pressure and coffee froth- I know pressure changes sure affect my sinuses, but coffee too.. who knew!
Claire says
Those oats look wonderful and I can’t wait to try that Galaxy Granola! I hope they have it in stores in MI soon! I feel ya, sometimes oats are just too hot for spring/summer bfasts!
Olivia says
Suprisingly awesome nutrition facts for granola! I’ve never tried granola ON TOP of oats…must be a really exciting texture thing.
Kim says
The Maple Pecan Quinoa granola sounds good, but I am bummed that Quinoa is the 10th ingredient listed.
Your oats look great! Have you tried Quinoa Flakes? Yummy
I like to switch up my morning grains so I don’t get bored and the quinoa flakes cook super fast and have a lot of flavor. I make whole quinoa too, but the flakes are great when I have less time in the am.

how often do you eat outside?
Desi says
Galaxy Granola sounds DELICIOUS! Just researched it… so cool… now, if only it were gluten-free! 🙂
Kate says
I read that the French press froth (or bloom) can also have to do with how freshly roasted the beans are. We switched to buying our beans straight from a local coffee store (they run specials on Fridays so it saves money), so they are always roasted within a day or two of purchase and the froth is crazy.
Hannah says
I *love* maple flavoured goods. That granola sounds divine! I’ll have to try and make my own version, seeing as I’m in the wrong country for this.
Christina says
I like to microwave the milk for my coffee for a few seconds and use a froth whipper to make it nice and foamy before hand. Then I just pour the coffee down the side of the mug with the foamed milk and it’s like having a coffee misto!
Tammy @ Defining Wellness says
I’m with you on the Maple Pecan Quinoa granola — got my samples last week and I really enjoyed it! Cant’ wait to try Hint of Honey.
