The weather improved! Our sun is out, but I hear there are storms coming tonight.
Our trail run was lots of fun. We did 5 miles this time. I timed all the miles again:
Mile 1 – 8:28
Mile 2 – 8:44
Mile 3 – 8:15
Mile 4 – 8:17
Mile 5 – 8:10
I was hoping to break a sub-8 minute mile again but despite nearly sprinting the last mile, I was still a little slow. But I do think my running speed has increased in the past few months. While I do run faster with the husband, I think my pace has improved from between 9:00-9:30 to in the 8’s somewhere.
My coffee detox made me so lethargic and achy this morning. It’s strange because I don’t want to drink coffee and am not craving it at all – but I do want to feel better. I know the only way I’ll feel better is to continue on without it. I had NO IDEA I was dependent on my morning cup or I would’ve cut back months ago. Luckily, about 2 minutes into the run my aches melted away. Ahhhh….the benefits of exercise. They’ve returned a little after lunch and I’m just going to take an IB Profin and hope it helps some.
Lunch
For lunch today we fired up the grill and cooked some veggies to put on a salad. I drizzled them with some olive oil and sprinkled with kosher salt before grilling.
- Bell peppers
- Zucchini
- Turnip (grilled = amazing)
- Carrot
My salad components were:
- Arugula
- Spinach
- Mystery CSA greens
- Grilled veggies
- Goat cheese
- Capers
- RoseBerry Dressing
On the side I had half an orange –
And a slice of Rudi’s Honey Wheat with a thin layer of AB –
These grilled salads are SO filling. I was really full when I finished it all.
Off to read in the hammock with the hub and then we start our fun night out!

kath,
i was going to buy capers in the store but they were $3.00 for a TINY jar!! what are capers anyway, like a vegetable or a seasoning or what?

Yummy salad! We don’t have a grill yet, but as we speak I have a pan of baby carrots, tomatoes, and peaches in the oven roasting away. I’m going to use a little of each in my lunch salad along with romaine, red onion, and some pan-seared shrimp. MmmMmm!
Have fun on your date night this evening!

I just went through a coffee detox myself. Not too much fun for the first few days. Don’t worry: it gets better soon! I’m back to being able to have a cup in the morning sometimes without getting the headaches if I skip a day.
If you want to ease back into having coffee sometimes, I recommend drinking from a smaller mug and choosing tea at least some of the time. An espresso drink (e.g. latte or cappuccino) surprisingly has a lot less caffeine than a cup of coffee of the same size. It has more calories because of the milk, but it can be a good way to get a coffee fix without overloading on caffeine. Good luck!

Fit4Life,
capers are actually buds from a bush grown in the Middle East (and some other places, I think).

Jill,
The “day-of-the-week” anniversary means that Kath got married on this Saturday last year (but the actual date was different since dates fall on different days of the week each year).

Fit4Life ,
They aren’t cheap, but I don’t use a ton of them at once so they last me a while. I usually get a large jar, which is a better deal. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capers
gottahavefaith ,
Thanks for the encouragement! I’m feeling MUCH better already today (Sunday) than I was yesterday.
jimmi ,
No rush to have kids here! Cookie dough cravings would not be good.

I love your site – great tips, pictures and insight.
I’m going to make the scones this evening and “see” if I can put in a similar time on my run this afternoon.
Question: I’m always looking for great, healthy muffin recipes. I’m wondering if you have any favourites you’d like to share?
Thanks and keep up the great blog.

Sally,
Welcome to KERF 🙂 I don’t bake muffins that often (I need to bake more but never get around to eating them all!) but I did make these last week and they are GREAT!
