Still SO SO thirsty!!! If I didn’t have this cold I’d head straight to the doctor ’cause this can’t be normal. I go into a panic if I’m more than 10 feet from my water bottle. It comes mostly between meals on the back of my tongue. Does anyone else experience this with sickness!?
Luckily I packed a new Herbal Water flavor to try today! OMG, Lemongrass – Mint – Vanilla was sooo heavenly. Love all three flavors!
Afternoon snack! I didn’t end up eating my kiwi at lunch (felt very satisfied after I finished my yogurt) so I saved him for a snack with some pistachios I got as a sample a while ago. Doing some research on nutrient density!
When I got home from work I had a major case of cabin fever and had to get out of the house!! Matt luckily agreed to go on a walk, so I created an excuse to walk to the grocery store for greens! I was seriously CRAVING greens like mad this afternoon. Water and greens. Body knows best!
But the real beauty on the dinner menu was PIZZA!
This nice little ball was 100% Great Harvest. Honey whole wheat dough! If you have a Great Harvest near you, you can probably convince the owners to sell you some (some of them already sell it!). It made the BEST whole wheat pizza crust ever!!!
[FYI, many of you have asked about Brew + Bake. Well, Matt gave it up 🙁 His domain was up for renewal and he just lost all motivation to blog. I encouraged him to keep it up just for a reference, but he didn’t feel it was worth the cost. So sorry! But we have a new pizza crust now anyways –> ]
Rolled on out…
Topped with leftover Ragu, sautéed peppers and mushrooms, tomatoes and Organic Valley Pepperjack and Mild Cheddar cheeses! Plus herbs.
AWESOME AWESOME pizza!
The Honey Whole Wheat made the ideal crust – nice and crispy on the bottom (thanks to the help of our pizza stone and a 500* oven) and puffy and doughy on top.
I got my greens fix with a pile of steam-sautéed (I basically sauté them in a bit of water) TJ’s greens mix plus some extra spinach, drizzled in lemon olive oil and seasoned [too heavily] with Creole seasoning.
Sorry about those WEIRD ADS that were playing on KERF today!! They were related to that puzzle I embedded last night and I removed it so they should be gone. Must have been pretty funny to hear fast food chains advertising their way in!
Definitely going to have a dark chocolate tonight. Dumbledore said so 🙂
Kara says
That pizza looks incredible! Especially the crust!
This might be a dumb question, but I’m intrigued. When you say you saute the greens in water, how exactly do you do that? Do you put water in the frying pan with the lemon olive oil? or is the oil added after?
Kath says
I heat the pan, pour in 2 tbsp of water, then the greens and then just stir them around. The water evaporates and the greens turn bright green. Then I add flavors like seasonings or a drizzle of oil or maple syrup.
Daniel says
That pizza looks delicious! I would take your advice about getting to a Great Harvest, but I looked up the nearest one and it’s ~60 miles from here. 🙁
I’ll stick to trying to make a 100% WW bread that doesn’t turn out to be a rock for now. :p
By the way, is that March’s issue of the ADA Journal? I’ve only gotten February’s so far.

Jocelyn@JocelynEatsFresh says
mmm that pizza looks delish! Sadly, i don’t think we have any great harvests in Canada!
Lily @ Lily's Health Pad says
Be thankful you crave healthy foods. When I’m sick, my body craves crap! Stuff I wouldn’t usually be interested in eating.
Lauren @ eater not a runner says
That pizza looks so good, I might have to pick up that crust from my local Great Harvest if they have it….
Sam (Merit to the Carrot) says
Perfect pizza dinner. I couldn’t picture it any better!
Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) says
Oh pizza! That looks deliciously comforting. Especially on a rainy, windy, and cold day like today…

Kath, that pizza looks amazing – I can almost taste it!! Love the greens on the side.

That is some beautiful pizza crust. I do get super thirsty when sick, but just because I’m so dry!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
GOMPH!!! That pizza looks delicious!
Kath, do you have a spiralizer? I just got one on Monday, and I’m having crazy fun with it with my salads and veggies…it seems like something that would be right up your alley 🙂
Kath says
I DO!! Someone from Open Sky sent it but I haven’t used it yet. What should I spiral?
Ally (Exercise and Pies) says
wow, that looks so so good! I’m craving pizza now!

I never saw the ads but heard the buzz on Twitter. I thought maybe there were ONION ads on here or something!!! Gena once had Safeway Top Choice Sirloin Steaks on her blog ads, which of course, cracked me up!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
I miss Brew ‘n’ Bake! I really have to try and make my own WW pizza dough. Right now, I just get the 99 cent one from Trader Joe’s. My mom asks for me to make pizza 4x a day 🙂

I think everyone is in agreement your pizza looks divine ! I make pizza dough all of the time, I need to use honey instead of sugar to switch it up. Hope you feel better!

You are such an inspiration! I had a pretty healthy eating day until I went crazy in the late afternoon and had 2 doughnuts! Dinner WILL be healthy. 🙂

Maybe a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep would help hydrate you via respiration? It always helps me when I have a head cold or allergy symptoms.
I’m going to have to try your pizza dough – it looks so much better than the cheap pre-packaged crust I get at the grocery store!
Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) says
I am convinced that I need a pizza stone now! My pizza never turns out like that!
Carolyn says
That pizza looks freaking awesome!

You just inspired me to make pizza this weekend!
Sadly, no great harvest around here but I’m sure I can find a great homemade crust recipe somewhere!
Hope you feel better soon! Have a great night!

if the drinking thing keeps up and it is weirding you out, i agree with heading to the dr. and making sure it’s nothing! the likelihood of you developing type 1 diabetes at this age is very very low but not completely 0 and there are other things that can cause increased thirst as well (also very very unlikely).
— your friendly endocrine consultant 🙂
Stef says
i didn’t see the ads but that’s funny indeed! drink up girl, hydration is so important when you’re fightin off a bug (as if you didn’t know that haha) yum pizza!
Karissa says
Sometimes when a cold/sickness is coming on I get really thirst (or that’s what I think) and it really turns out to be a soar throat. Maybe that’s what’s going on. Hope you feel better soon!
Stacy says
Your pizza dough looks so beautiful! Often times I find that I have a hard time rolling it out in a pretty circle, it usually starts to tear. I’m not sure if this is related to the dough (Trader Joe’s Whole Wheat) or my rolling technique. Maybe you will do a video one day on rolling out pizza dough for the challenged rollers out there.
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
Homemade pizza is the best. It’s the only way I’ll eat pizza. That and great toppings.
M says
looks DELICIOUS!
Becky says
That pizza looks ah-mazing! I keep trying to perfect my own dough recipe, but it looks like I’d spend my time more wisely driving to Great Harvest and buying theirs!
Monica (Musings of The Granola Girl) says
Oh my that pizza looks so delicious! I’m going to have to make my own one day this week 🙂
Danielle (Coffee Run) says
I didn’t even notice the ads but that’s kind of funny 🙂
Your pizza doesn’t look homemade at ALL! It looks like it came from a restaurant. I’m still trying to perfect homemade pizza dough
Have a good night!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
The pizza looks fantastic!!! That’s genius to use bread dough as a crust… never thought of that!
Lauren @ A Fit Foodie says
I just looked and we have one in Louisville! It looks so great so I’m hoping our store sells the dough!!! Thanks for the idea!
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
I’m going to run out and ask my Great Harvest about getting some whole wheat dough to make pizza. I love their bread and can only imagine what the pizza would be like.
Jessica says
Your pizza looks amazing. Now I want to switch up my menu for the week and make pizza. 🙂
Carly says
I had to comment on your thirst – I have always been a thirsty person (sometimes I get nervous about it too, but my whole family is like that) Anyway, I am fairly newly pregnant (yay!) and now my thirst is similar to what you described. In no way am I implying that you might be pregnant, just giving a shout out to terrible thirst! I wake up every morning with that awful dryness on the back of my tongue and almost feel like you do when you have a hangover. Ah…the weird things that happen when you are pregnant!
Sara says
hey kath,
i don’t want to scare you (since i doubt it is the case), but excessive thirst can be a symptom of undiagnosed Type I diabetes, as I’m sure you know from your studies. This seems like a sudden temporary thing, but if it continues, maybe you should check it out at a doctor’s office? in any case, feel better!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
I buy pizza crust from Great Harvest quite a bit. I LOVE it. It has just the right amount sweetness and it always turns out nice and crispy! 🙂
Lisa says
Lupin said it, not dumbledore! On the train, after the dementors! Oh boy, now I feel like a dork. That pizza looks delish!!!
Jennifer says
I sometimes get super thirsty when I’m getting a sore throat or have a really mild one. You know how you can get a sore throat that just feels scratchy & dry and the only thing that helps is drinking? My last cold had that in the beginning. BTW, it hung around for over 2 WEEKS! Horrible. But I’m pregnant so my immune system isn’t running at 100% hopefully that won’t happen to you.
Nicole D. says
Hey Kath! I’m actually a doctor…don’t worry about your thirst unless it continues after you start feeling better. Excessive thirst can happen with Type 1 or 2 diabetes, but I REALLY don’t think you have to consider either of those at this point (or probably ever). No worries for now…lots of fluids is a good thing! Feel better. 😀
Abby says
MMM That pizza looks amazing! I love whole wheat crust!!
…and you HAVE to listen to Dumbledore!
AnnQ says
It’s so funny…I love your site, but everytime I read one of your posts the food looks so good I end up craving pizza or whatever at like 10pm 🙂

Weird thirst going on, hope it corrects itself soon. Matt traded his blog in for a bakery! 😉
That pizza looks ammmmmmaaaaaaaaaazzzzzing~~~~! 😀 We had pizza tonight too, but our dough was white and from the bakery. I’ve found that a little cheese on pizza goes a long way ’cause you don’t really miss it at all.

I need GH in my life! I’m stoked that you’ll be opening one in Charlottesville… I mean it’s still like four hours away but I’d totally come to get whole wheat pizza crust AND see my food blog hero!
kara says
I get super thirsty in the winter in general. I think it’s because it’s always so dry in our house and at work so my whole body feels dehydrated and icky.
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
That pizza looks so good — I’ve been craving it like mad lately, need to find an expensive pizza place here in Sydney. Food is $$$ here so I’ve been mostly cooking at the hostel kitchen instead… not as much fun as home. 😉
Eileen says
Seconding the request for a dough-rolling tutorial!
I also get TJ’s pizza dough, and it’s delicious, but we always end up with rather funky-looking pizzas. I can never get it round!
Colleen says
Oh man I just finished dinner but my mouth is watering again!
Have you ever tried using a pizza stone?
Kath says
Yes, I said in the post we have one!
Allison @ Food For Healing says
Where did you get that bottle of water from?!
That pizza looks absolutely amazing. I love making homemade pizzas, they are the best.
Kath says
It was a sample, but I have them in my Open Sky store now.

Megan @ Healthy Hoggin says
LOVE Great Harvest! We have one near my parent’s house, and whenever I visit they have a loaf of their light wheat bread waiting for me! So good, it’s like cake!
Pizza looks delish!!
Kathy W. says
okay, a little worried about you! I seemed to remember you talking about being thirsty before lately so I looked back, and you said you were “so thirsty” and thought about water frequently in several other blog entries in Jan. and Feb. Also, having diabetes often feels like having a cold or flu, without the cold or flu symptoms.
You might want to get a fasting glucose test. If you don’t want to go to the dr., go to a pharmacy or big box store & get a name brand glucose meter like Freestyle or OneTouch that has a rebate equal or greater than the price. Look for one that comes with a sample of 10 test strips (many don’t). Even Wal-Mart’s very cheap Relion isn’t so bad. Avoid anything called Truetrack or Wavesense.) Then test your blood when you get up after a 8-12 hour fast. Easy-peasy!
Emily says
I am going to try your technique for sauteing greens! Sounds like a simple/healthier way to do it! Also, that pizza looks delicious!
Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com says
You are so SO lukcy to have a baker in your house! What I’d do to be able to have fresh bread or pizza dough on cue…don’t let that one go Kath!! 😛
Sarah says
MMMMh yOUR PIZZA LOOKS GOOD! I Have a cheese-related question: I want to make paneer (an Indian cheese where full-fat milk is boiled with some lemon and then drained):
1. Put the milk to boil. When it starts boiling, remove from the heat and wait for 2 to 3 minutes. Then, add the lemon juice and stir gently till all the milk curdles.
2. Leave covered for some time. Then, pour over a thin muslin cloth and drain out the whey.
3. Cover with a cloth and place a weight on top to drain out the water.
4. Cut into piecs or crumbles as required.
I looked the calories up, but didn’t find anything reliable. What do you think? Would calories and fat “go away” with draining? Thanks a lot for your answer!
Kath says
I think the draining is removing mostly water and perhaps some of the whey protein, but I would just assume the macronutrients stay the same to be no the conservative side.
Rachel (Suburban Yogini) says
I get water cravings like this. I used to worry about it but all my tests came back clear so I guess some days I need more water than others. You do lose more water when you have a head cold (all that mucus!!!) so that might be it.
Also wanted to say I’m totally in admiration of you with your bakery venture. Very excited to hear how all that goes in the future!
www.integrativehappiness.com says
hi kath.. OMG that pizza looks AMAZING!!!!! I wanted to crawl thru the computer screen:)
Funny, I too started to come down with a cold last friday, thought I fought it off for the most part until at work yesterday. My head was so clogged (like I was driving in the mountains) It was very distracting to say the least!
Anyways, like you said keep listening to your body and its inner guidance system (especially where chocolate is concerned:))
Hannah says
Don’t worry, I’m struggling with a cold too at the moment (not so much fun when one’s travelling!) and I’m thirsty a lot as well. Partly I think it’s psychological because water soothes my throat, but also I know I’m drinking far more than I usually do. It’s better than *not* wanting to drink water, right?
Also, Dumbledore knows best. Always.
Elizabeth says
What kind of Creole Seasoning do you use? Might it be Tony Chachere’s? That’s the real stuff, coming from a deep southern girl.
Kath says
Tonys!
christie @ honoring health says
That pizza looks amazing.
Funny thing about the ads, I never saw them. I always read in my google reader and then click over when I comment.
I know others have said it before but extreme thirst like that can be a sign of diabetes. I am always super thirsty no matter how much water I drink and my doctor had me tested. Thankfully, no diabetes but it may be worth getting checked out. Even super healthy people like yourself can have it.
Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) says
That pizza looks gorgeous, as do those delectable greens. I love the simple way you prepared them. I like my veggies minimally seasoned, so that approach looks particularly appealing.
Hope you feel better!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Sounds like you have the same time of cold/flu that I had! I was thirsty *all* of the time and could not get enough greens in me. So weird! The good news is that I only felt sick for 5 days, and I felt better about as fast as it took me to get sick in the first place. 😀
Nicole, RD says
Dinner looked fantastic! Love the salad!
Diana says
I love the honey whole wheat. That’s so neat you guys used the dough to make a pizza crust! Yum!
Hope you feel better soon. 🙂

Hi Kath,
I miss Matt’s blog – would you consider reposting his WW pizza dough recipe?
Thanks, Penney in Canada
Katherine (Localvorious) says
Your pizza looks incredible!! I just did a post on pizza dinner too – but mine pales in comparison. We use Rustic Crust, I think it’s time to step it up and use dough. Does Great Harvest sell their dough at their stores?
Love the Dumbledore/chocolate reference! 🙂
Katie says
Kath,
I’m on the tail end of what it sounds like you’re getting, and I am still DYING of thirst every day. I too drink plenty of water on a daily basis, but while I was sick I was having even more (close to 96 ounces many days!). Keep hydrating, it’ll pass!
Katherine (Localvorious) says
Oh duh – just re-read your post. I’ll beg my local Great Harvest for some dough. Thanks for the tip!
Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind says
Note to self: make pizza soon. Geez-o-pete that looks good.
And mmmm creole seasoning.
Katy (The Balanced Foodie) says
That pizza looks beautiful!! Again, another reason I wish we had a Great Harvest here! My husband and I usually buy a big dough ball and cut it in half, but I think next time we should just make a thicker crust. Looks delicious!
Jennifer @ GreenChic says
How awesome does that pizza look?! I love make pizza at home…it’s so much cheaper than buying, and so much better for you! Plus, it’s fun for the kids to get involved too… my son loves to choose what topping we are going to have. Going to have to hunt down some of this crust though…
Sunshine says
Hi Kath. I read here all the time & am a terrible at leaving comments. First, I want to say that I wish I had a GH nearby b/c that crust looks AMAZING. Second, I always always get a dry feeling in the back of my throat when I am fighting a cold that I hasn’t quite developed yet. Like, it’s a pre-symptom. I take it as a signal to up hydration, vit-c and rest…and then cross my fingers that it doesn’t progress to a full blown cold/sickness. Take care! And thanks for inspiring so many of us to eat better!
Jennifer says
LOL! I did find it amusing to hear a McDonald’s ad playing while I was on your site. Glad you got that fixed.
Kara says
Being incredibly thirsty was one of the first signs of pregnancy for me, as well as being congested! 🙂

that pizza looks heavenly! i didn’t know to cook it at such high temps, but im going to try that next time.
Shion (Shi's Eating) says
Wow, that pizza looks incredible! I need to find a bakery near me that will sell me fresh whole wheat pizza dough… so jealous!
Dinah Soar says
Extreme thirst can be a symptom of diabetes. If you still have it when your cold is gone, get to a doctor asap.
Kath says
Thanks for the health advice. I’m pretty sure it’s cold related, but I hope not diabetes or pregnancy!
Kath says
We will do a dough video the next time we make pizza! The key is to get your dough to room temp.
Also, I’ll see if Matt will type up his recipe this week!
Gena says
WOW. Your pizza looks awesome! Wish I could have a slice 🙂
Heather @ Sugar & Spice says
Lemongrass Mint Vanilla sounds amazing! I can’t wait to try it. Your pizza also looks wonderful – yum!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
that sounds like an awesome pizza! i think i might try it out on our Friday pizza night this week 🙂
Pam (@ TotalHealthCounseling) says
The pizza looks amazing and love that it’s a honey whole wheat crust.
Wish that restaurants would be willing to make whole wheat crusts, they taste better than the standard in my opinion.
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
I love the steam-sautee idea for spinach. I like to cook my spinach but it often comes out too oily. I will have to give this a shot and perhaps drizzle some truffle oil on top once cooked :).
Stina says
Some how, I had completely forgotten about Great Harvest. Thanks for the reminder! I think I’m going to need to take a trip to the one near me this weekend!
Kristilyn (My 29th Year) says
I wish we had a Great Harvest here in Canada where I am, but no. 🙁 That pizza bread looks delicious! I love making it homemade – it’s just so much better than the pre-rolled crusts.
Every once in a while I crave veggies … the last few days my meals have been slightly more carb-heavy (more in the bread sense, not fruit) and today I’m just craving roasted vegetables for dinner! Like you say, you gotta listen to the body!

Kath,
I just discovered that I have a Great Harvest in my neighborhood (Alexandria, VA). The bf and I went in yesterday and received a free cookie because it was our first time visiting. We also sampled a slice of the garlic cheddar bread and ended up buying a honey whole wheat loaf for paninis 🙂 Super good and I of course thought of you and Matt while we were there! Cheers

Hi Kath,
I saw a breakfast recipe in a magazine for combining oats and yogurt overnight and it looked so good. Well I went back to make it and couldn’t remember what magazine it was in, searched all over my house… so I went on google, found your website and absolutely love it!!! There are so many great recipes for oats and yogurt I don’t know which one to try first!! This website is awesome! I already added it to my favorites bar and can’t wait to search for oodles of new recipes. I’m a health and fitness nut myself so this is great for me. Thanks!
Keep the healthy food ideas coming!!

Welcome!!!

Hey! I just had this bread. It’s actually the first time I’ve ever had great harvest bread. Such an amazing bread to start with! 😀 I’m in Chapel Hill.

Kath-
Love reading your blog! The pizza looks amazing but I have a question. I live on my own and love to make things at home that you can get at restaurants…such as pizza. I think I’ve seen you make pizza on your blog in smaller portions and since you guys make the dough yourselves, can you recommend how much dough to make for a one-person mini-pizza. I bought WW dough from a local bakery and not being big on leftovers, I would like to freeze it in individual portions, but really don’t have any clue even about how much to portion for each one! Any advice would be much appreciated!
By the way….found a great harvest and love it!!!
Kath says
Jamie,
Do you have a food scale? I’d go by ounces. Bread is usually about 70 calories per ounce, and I’d say a crust of maybe 3-4 ounces would be ideal for a single dinner?
